Abstract

The relative yields of kaons and protons compared with the yield of pions at high p and polar angles θ away from 90° (in the range from 10° to 45°) are presented for pp, dd, and αα interactions at a centre-of-mass energy $$\sqrt {s_{NN} } = 31$$ GeV per nucleon-nucleon collision. The measured particle ratios depend on the atomic mass number A of the beam particles and on θ. Abstract

Properties of secondaries associated with a high- p charged trigger particle (3< p<5 GeV/c) were studied for α p and αα interactions at c.m. energies $$\sqrt s = 88$$ GeV and 125 GeV, respectively. The p distributions of secondaries in the away-jet and trigger-jet regions were compared with those for high- p interactions. No statistically significant differences were seen, except at low p. Momentum and angular distributions of spectator and leading protons were studied as a function of charge and rapidity of the trigger hadron. The observed correlations between trigger charge and number of spectator protons provide evidence of valence quark contributions to the trigger jet. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Two-particle rapidity correlations have been studied for αα, α p, and p p interactions at the CERN ISR using the Split-Field Magnet (SFM) detector. In order to isolate the true two-particle correlations, the analysis was performed at fixed charged multiplicity. In the framework of a simple cluster model, it is found that cluster widths as well as cluster multiplicities are the same for αα, α p, and p p interactions, and both decrease with increasing charged multiplicity. Abstract

Multiplicity and pseudorapidity distributions have been measured forS+Al, Cu, Ag and Au at 200 A GeV. The widths of the pseudorapidity distributions increase from central to peripheral collisions. The main contribution is assumed to come from the increasing fraction of charged particles stemming from the fragmentation of the target for peripheral collisions as compared to central collisions. On the average 170-180 charged particles per unit of pseudorapidity are attained for the most centralS+Au events at the maximum of the distribution. The target dependence of the yield of charged particles for central collisions is investigated. In the target rapidity region the yield is directly proportional to the target mass. The transverse energy per charged particle has been studied as a function of centrality and pseudorapidity. The experimental results are compared to the results from the Monte-Carlo model VENUS 3.11 which includes rescattering among secondaries. A comparison between different centrality triggers is made. Abstract

Correlations between positive pions are investigated in the target fragmentation region of 200 A GeVO+nucleus collisions. The pions are measured with the Plastic Ball detector in the WA80 experiment at the CERN SPS. The target mass dependence of the radii and the correlation strength extracted by interferometry is studied. A new approach to the fit of the correlation function is introduced. The correlation strength and both invariant and transverse radii increase with decreasing target mass. The transverse radius forO+C reactions appears to be much larger than the geometrical radius of the nuclei involved. For the Au target only a small fraction of the measured pions contributes to the apparent correlation. Hints for a much larger second component inO+Au reactions are observed. Abstract

Charged pion yields and transverse energies of baryons are measured for the reactionO+Cu, Ag, Au at 60 and 200 A GeV bombarding energy in the target fragmentation region employing the Plastic Ball detector. Only little dependence of the measured quantities on the bombarding energy is found. The data are compared with the multi-chain fragmentation model of Ranft. As a result it turns out that a leading order formation zone cascade is not sufficient to explain the baryon yield and the transverse energies of baryons in the target fragmentation region. Results based on calorimetric measurements are presented from reactions of 60 A GeV and 200 A GeVO projectiles with C, Cu, Ag, and Au nuclei. Minimum-bias cross sections are discussed. Energy spectra measured at zero degrees and transverse-energy distributions for the pseudorapidity range 2.4≦η≤5.5 are shown. An analysis of the average transverse energy in terms of the number of participating nucleons and the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions is presented. Abstract

Ar-emulsion interactions are studied, to investigate the question of anomalons, in two G- 5 emulsion stacks. In about 4600 primary interactions, projectile fragments of Z≧2 for all generations have been followed until they interact or leave the stack. After careful estimation of charges of these fragments, variation of their mean free paths is studied as a function of distance from the preceding interaction. Generation effect, N dependence and production angle effect are investigated. In addition multi-chain events are analysed separately. Our results do not show anomalons at the 6% level and are consistent with non-occurrence of anomalons. However, this experiment is not sensitive enough to rule out anomalons (with a mfp of the order of 2 to 3 cm) produced at about 1% (or less) level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Inelastic αα and dd collisions were studied at a centre-of-mass energy √ S=31.2 GeV per nucleon-nucleon collision, using the Split-Field Magnet (SFM) detector at the CERN ISR. In this paper we show the inclusive and semi-inclusive rapidity distributions of protons, compare them with predictions of the Lund model, and calculate the average rapidity loss for participant protons. Abstract

We have investigated kinematical correlations between the outgoing beam proton and the proton emerging from the fragmenting α-particle in pα collisions at $$\sqrt {s_{p\alpha } } = 88GeV$$ . Strong correlations are seen, indicating the dominance of quasi-elastic pp scattering in the fragmentation channel p+α→ p+pX, for the ¦ t¦ range 0.05-1.00 (GeV/c). Abstract

Model experiments and tests on 2 patients were performed to probe the feasibility of roentgen stereophotogrammetry for evaluating variations in shape and volume of the liver. The surface of the object was marked with indicators, and the three-dimensional marker coordinates were determined. The model experiments demonstrate a good correlation between true volume and the volumes defined by the indicators, and also demonstrate the possibility of localizing an expansivity. The variability of the volume of a polyhedron defined by 15 liver indicators with stage of breathing is discussed.

72. Experimental Partial Ureteric Obstruction in Newborn Rats. VII. Are the Long Term Effects on Renal Morphology Avoided by Release of the Obstruction?

Abstract

Partial obstruction of the left ureter was created in newborn rats. The obstruction was either permanent or was released after two or seven days. The effects were studied at the age of six weeks. The permanently obstructed kidneys characteristically exhibited considerable enlargement (× 18) of pelvic volume and prominent deformation of the papilla, frequently associated with moderate widening of collecting ducts and convoluted tubuli, and focal inflammatory and degenerative lesions. The weight difference between the hydronephrotic and the contralateral, intact kidney was significantly higher than in a sham operated group, although the combined kidney weight was unchanged, indicating a reduction on the obstructed side and a compensatory contralateral hypertrophy. In the group released after seven days, the pelvic volume had returned to normal; nevertheless the parenchymal weight pattern and the histological lesions were similar to those found in animals obstructed for six weeks. In the group released after two days, the pelvic volume had normalized, and the histological changes were less prominent than in animals obstructed for seven days or six weeks. Yet there was a significant difference in parenchymal weight between the hydronephrotic and the contralateral kidney, almost entirely caused by hypertrophy on the nonobstructed side. Thus, the ureteric obstruction must be released very early to avoid parenchymal weight reduction and curb the tissue lesions. On the other hand, the resulting parenchymal damage is moderate and does not seem to progress with time.

Abstract

The production of neutral pions by the interaction of 200A·GeV p and16O projectiles with a Au target has been studied in the pseudorapidity range 1.5???2.1. Transverse momentum spectra have been measured between 0.4 GeV/c and 3.6 GeV/c and their dependence on the centrality of the collision has been investigated. The peripheral-collision spectra display a marked change of slope with a hard component starting at about 1.8 GeV/c, in contrast to central-collision data. The data are discussed in comparison to p+p and a+a data from the ISR.

Abstract

Properties of secondaries associated with a high-pT charged trigger particle (3T<5 GeV/c) were studied for ap and aa interactions at c.m. energies " GeV and 125 GeV, respectively. ThepT distributions of secondaries in the away-jet and trigger-jet regions were compared with those for high-pT pp interactions. No statistically significant differences were seen, except at lowpT. Momentum and angular distributions of spectator and leading protons were studied as a function of charge and rapidity of the trigger hadron. The observed correlations between trigger charge and number of spectator protons provide evidence of valence quark contributions to the trigger jet.

Abstract

Multiplicity and pseudorapidity distributions have been measured for32S+Al, Cu, Ag and Au at 200A GeV. The widths of the pseudorapidity distributions increase from central to peripheral collisions. The main contribution is assumed to come from the increasing fraction of charged particles stemming from the fragmentation of the target for peripheral collisions as compared to central collisions. On the average 170–180 charged particles per unit of pseudorapidity are attained for the most central32S+Au events at the maximum of the distribution. The target dependence of the yield of charged particles for central collisions is investigated. In the target rapidity region the yield is directly proportional to the target mass. The transverse energy per charged particle has been studied as a function of centrality and pseudorapidity. The experimental results are compared to the results from the Monte-Carlo model VENUS 3.11 which includes rescattering among secondaries. A comparison between different centrality triggers is made.

Abstract

Charged pion yields and transverse energies of baryons are measured for the reaction16O+Cu, Ag, Au at 60 and 200A GeV bombarding energy in the target fragmentation region employing the Plastic Ball detector. Only little dependence of the measured quantities on the bombarding energy is found. The data are compared with the multi-chain fragmentation model of Ranft. As a result it turns out that a leading order formation zone cascade is not sufficient to explain the baryon yield and the transverse energies of baryons in the target fragmentation region.

Abstract

Charged particle multiplicity distributions and pseudo-rapidity density distributions from16O induced nuclear collisions at 200 and 60A GeV are presented. The data were taken, using a minimumbias trigger, with the WA80 set-up at the CERN SPS. In this presentation we focus on how the yield of charged particles depends on the projectile energy, the mass number of the target nucleus and the energy measured in a uranium-plastic sampling calorimeter covering angles close to zero degrees. The data are compared to simulations from the event generator FRITIOF.

Abstract

Target remnants withZ<3 from proton-nucleus and16O-nucleus reactions at 60 and 200 GeV/nucleon were measured in the angular range from 30° to 160° (-1.716O-induced reactions (˜300 MeV/c) than in proton-induced reactions (˜130 MeV/c). The baryon rapidity distributions are roughly in agreement with one-fluid hydrodynamical calculations at 60 GeV/nucleon16O+Au but are in disagreement at 200 GeV/nucleon, indicating the higher degree of transparency at the higher bombarding energy. Both, the transverse momenta of target spectators and the entropy produced in the target fragmentation region are compared to those attained in head-on collisions of two heavy nuclei at Bevalac energies. They are found to be comparable or do even exceed the values for the participant matter at beam energies of about 1–2 GeV/nucleon.

Abstract

The copious production of charged particles in nuclues-nucleus collisions at SPS energies necessitated new technical solutions for charged-particle measurements. We describe the construction and performance of the streamer-tube detectors used in the experiment WA80 at CERN. Special attention is given to the developed electronic readout system with serial transmission of data from more than 40000 readout pads. About 100 events per beam spill were collected during data taking. For each event the full angular information is recorded for charged particles with polar angles: 2° < θ < 29°.

83. Experimental Partial Ureteric Obstruction in Newborn Rats. IV. Do the Morphological Effects Progress Continuously?

Abstract

Partial obstruction of the left ureter was created in newborn rats, and its effects were studied after 1, 2, 3, 6 and 9 weeks—that is, until adult age. Within 1 week, a considerable hydronephrosis had appeared. Within 2 weeks, parenchymal weight was found slightly reduced (8 per cent) on the obstructed side, and, within 3 weeks, equivalently increased on the contralateral, intact side. After these points in time, there was no further deterioration. Histological examination revealed marked deformation of the papilla and minor foci of degeneration and inflammation within 1 to 2 weeks which tended to become chronic in type after 3 to 9 weeks. Arterial hypertension was not noted. Thus, the effects of partial ureteric obstruction on the renal parenchyma are 1) discrete, 2) not in proportion to the degree of hydronephrosis, 3) fully compensated by contralateral hypertrophy and 4), after reaching an early maximum, not increasing with time.

Abstract

40Ar-emulsion interactions are studied, to investigate the question of anomalons, in twoG- 5 emulsion stacks. In about 4600 primary interactions, projectile fragments of Z≧2 for all generations have been followed until they interact or leave the stack. After careful estimation of charges of these fragments, variation of their mean free paths is studied as a function of distance from the preceding interaction. Generation effect,Nh dependence and production angle effect are investigated. In addition multi-chain events are analysed separately. Our results do not show anomalons at the 6% level and are consistent with non-occurrence of anomalons. However, this experiment is not sensitive enough to rule out anomalons (with a mfp of the order of 2 to 3 cm) produced at about 1% (or less) level.

Abstract

We have measured the energy and angular dependence of charged-pion production, with associated multiplicity selection, in La+La collisions at 138, 183, and 246 MeV/nucleon. The pions are produced mainly in collisions with a large number of participants. The general behavior of the spectra is consistent with results at higher energies, but the yield of subthreshold pions depends much more strongly upon the target and projectile mass. The pion spectra at 246 MeV/nucleon exhibit a strong charge dependence.
