In conditions of environmental radiocontamination, the vegetable-animal products-man food chain becomes particularly critical for the determination of population equivalent doses (1). Such doses may be predicted using contaminant transfer models such as NUCRAC-SAI (2), DOSDIM (3), NRPB (4), PATHWAY (5) and others. These are principally founded on dynamic compartmental systems and they have in common the use of first degree kinetics, which lead to the formulation of a system of differential equations, the solution of which shows the trend of radionuclide concentration in time, in the various environmental and animal matrices. Efficacy verification of these analytical instruments is performed at its best in real situations of radioactive spill in the environment, such as the incident which interested Italy in 1986. In the latter occasion we applied a modulus belonging to a more complex model described below, and which uses the daily dietary intake of 137Cs , to predict the meat and milk contamination variation in time, in the adult bovine. A 4-year-old, male French Brittany weighing 18 kg was presented for continuous disorexia associated with a large palpable mass in the cranial abdomen. Radiographic and ultrasonographic examination showed the presence of a mass close to the gastric wall. Percutaneous needle aspiration of the mass revealed pyogranulomatous inflammation. An exploratory laparotomy was performed in order to remove the mass. Actinomiycotic mycetoma was revealed after surgery by positive culture. After a three months antibiotic therapy, nine months follow up showed complete remission

Lead concentrations in blood of 45 specimens of mute swan from the molting area of the Isonzo River Mouth Nature Reserve (Italy) were determined in two consecutive years (2006-2007), some birds were neck ringed to identify their homing behavior. The second sampling included whole body X-ray radiography and Cu and Zn plasma analyses to investigate the health impact of putative Pb exposure. X-ray images of all investigated specimens did not show any radiopacity due to the ingestion of metal bodies. Lead levels (0.08-0.44 μg/ml) were in the range of those reported for swans living in unpolluted or slightly polluted environments and excluded acute intoxication, as confirmed by clinical investigation. Zinc concentrations ranged between 2.93 and 7.59 μg/ml and were one order of magnitude higher than Cu concentrations (0.21-0.42 μg/ml). The negative correlation between Pb and Zn concentrations could be indicative of adverse health effects caused by chronic lead exposure. To our knowledge this is the first study reporting Pb, Zn and Cu blood levels, X-ray radiographies and data on the origin of swan populations.

Introduction/objectives Whether a brachymorphic conformation may lead to electrocardiographic peculiarities diverging from generic reference intervals (RIs) cited in textbooks remains to be established. Therefore, this study aimed at evaluating electrocardiographic variables in one of the most common brachymorphic breed, namely the French Bulldog (FB). Animals, materials and methods Medical records were retrospectively reviewed to identify healthy FBs ≥1-year-old that underwent an electrocardiogram. The Mann–Whitney U test or the Student's t-test was used to compare continuous variables among male and female dogs, while the χ2 test was used for categorical variables. Spearman's correlation coefficients between electrocardiographic measurements and age and body weight were also calculated. Moreover, electrocardiographic RIs were determined. Results Eighty healthy FBs were enrolled; their electrocardiographic variables fitted with generic RIs, with the exception of the QRS-complex mean electrical axis (QRS-MEA). The median QRS-MEA value was 43.5° (from −18° to +90°). A QRS-MEA shift was found in 24/80 (30%) dogs; in all cases, it was a left shift (median 26°, from −18° to +39°). Specifically, 20 dogs showed a slight left shift (from +39° to +14°), while four dogs showed a marked one (from +9° to −18°). No meaningful differences were found when comparing electrocardiographic variables between males and females. No significant correlations between electrocardiographic variables and age or body weight were found, with the exceptions of the P-wave amplitude, PQ-interval duration and QT-interval duration. Conclusions Healthy FBs can present a left shift of QRS-MEA. These data should be considered when interpreting FBs’ electrocardiograms.

Background: Contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) is used to evaluate vascularity of the gastrointestinal wall in neoplastic and inflammatory diseases. Objective: To assess the feasibility of CEUS for the evaluation of duodenal perfusion in dogs with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Animals: Forty-two dogs with IBD and 20 clinically healthy dogs. Methods: All CEUS studies of the duodenum were analyzed to obtain time-intensity curves and perfusion parameters. The procedure was repeated in 12 IBD dogs 2months after a standardized treatment. Results: On CEUS, the duodenal wall showed a typical perfusion pattern characterized by a radial and simultaneous enhancement of the wall in all dogs. On qualitative assessment, no differences were observed in contrast medium distribution between healthy and affected dogs, or between dogs with IBD before and after treatment. Peak intensity (PI) and area under the curve (AUC) significantly differed between healthy (PI=3.58 arbitrary units [au; 1.86-4.93 au] and AUC=47.63 au seconds [aus, 22.68-62.15]) and affected dogs (PI=5.10au [0.63-15.16 au] and AUC=63.62 aus [5.31-212.20 aus]; P=.03 and.03, respectively). No significant differences were found for the perfusion parameters before and after treatment. Conclusions and Clinical Importance: We showed that CEUS allows discrimination between IBD affected dogs and healthy dogs by evaluation of time-intensity curves, but did not provide useful information for monitoring therapeutic response. The qualitative assessment identified no significant differences between healthy and affected dogs, or between dogs before and after treatment.

Although Toxoplasma gondii represents an oft-cited cause of myocarditis in veterinary medicine, the existing literature on the pre-mortem demonstration of T. gondii-associated myocardial injury (MI) in dogs is scant. In this case series, we provide detailed clinical, laboratory, echocardiographic and electrocardiographic description of three T. gondii-positive dogs diagnosed with MI. In all cases, etiological diagnosis was based on the antibody screening test (all dogs had IgM titres ≥1:64) and MI was demonstrated by a concomitant increase of the serum concentration of cardiac troponin I (0.25-9.6 ng/ml, upper hospital limit

Objectives Normal features of the ST segment are poorly characterised in dogs. This study aimed to describe ST segment characteristics in a population of healthy dogs. Materials and Methods Medical records were reviewed to identify healthy dogs that underwent an electrocardiogram. Several ST segment qualitative parameters were evaluated: presence/absence of deviation, type of deviation (depression/elevation) and morphological patterns of depression (horizontal, downsloping, upsloping and sagging) and elevation (horizontal, concave and convex). Moreover, the amplitude of ST segment depression/elevation was measured. The potential effect of sex, bodyweight, age and somatotype on the presence/absence of ST segment deviation was evaluated through binary logistic regression. Results One hundred and eighty dogs were enrolled. The deviation was evident in 43 of 180 dogs (23.9%), among which 36 showed depression and seven showed elevation. The median depression amplitude was 0.1 (range 0.05 to 0.3) mV. The mean elevation amplitude was 0.136 +/- 0.055 mV. Concerning depression morphology, the horizontal pattern was overrepresented, followed by the downsloping and upsloping ones. Concerning elevation morphology, all dogs showed a concave pattern. No meaningful effect of sex, bodyweight, age and somatotype on the presence/absence of ST segment deviation was documented. Clinical Significance Normal features of canine ST segment were described and made available for clinical use.

Simple Summary Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the causative agent of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, is continuing to spread worldwide. As with many emerging infectious diseases, COVID-19 is of zoonotic origin, meaning that animals are susceptible to infection, including domestic pets such as dogs. Despite epidemiological surveys conducted in dogs living either in SARS-CoV-2-positive households or in geographic areas affected by COVID-19 steadily increasing, clinical reports aimed at characterising disease manifestation are currently scant in this species. This case report accurately describes the development of myocardial injury complicated by left ventricular systolic dysfunction in a SARS-CoV-2-positive dog. Interestingly, the clinical picture described herein closely resembles the cardiological compromise documented in SARS-CoV-2-positive humans and can therefore contribute to filling the current knowledge gap that exists between human and veterinary medicine concerning COVID-19. Abstract A six-year-old Cavalier King Charles spaniel was referred with a two-month history of severe exercise intolerance and syncope. Clinical signs had developed during a local wave of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) two weeks after its family members had manifested symptoms of this viral disease and their positivity to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was confirmed. Cardiologic assessment documented myocardial injury complicated by systolic dysfunction. An extensive diagnostic work-up allowed us to rule out common causes of myocardial compromise, both infective and not. Accordingly, serological and molecular tests aimed at diagnosing SARS-CoV-2 infection were subsequently performed, especially in light of the dog’s peculiar history. Results of such tests, interpreted in the light of previous findings and current knowledge from human medicine, supported a presumptive diagnosis of COVID-19-associated myocardial injury, a clinical entity hitherto poorly described in this species.

Introduction Although transient deep and giant negative T waves (NTWs) may develop during myocardial injury (MI) in humans, no data exist on this repolarization abnormality in canine MI. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the occurrence of transient deep/giant NTWs in dogs with MI. Animals, Materials and Methods Medical records were retrospectively searched to identify dogs with MI and transient deep/giant NTWs. Signalment, history, and selected diagnostic test results were reviewed. Data analysis was descriptive. Results Six cases were diagnosed with MI associated with deep (n = 1) and giant (n = 5) transient NTWs. Myocardial injury was classified as acute in all cases and was due to snake envenomation (n = 3), sepsis (n = 2), and systemic inflammatory response syndrome (n = 1). At the time of deep/giant NTWs identification, all dogs had elevated cardiac troponin I and ≥1 echocardiographic abnormality of the left ventricular structure and/or function. Moreover, all dogs with giant NTWs had prolonged QT intervals. After the MI resolution, T-wave polarity and QT-interval duration became normalized in all dogs. Moreover, left ventricular morphological and functional parameters were completely normalized in four dogs. In contrast, ventricular echogenicity remained heterogeneous in two dogs, despite otherwise normalized ventricular parameters. Five dogs were still alive at the conclusion of the study. Conclusions Transient deep/giant NTWs may develop in dogs with acute MI and T-wave polarity changes seem to occur synchronously with the evolution of myocardial damage. Moreover, transient deep/giant NTWs seem associated with a favorable prognosis in canine MI.

Simple Summary In dogs, infective endocarditis represents a rare but clinically relevant disease that typically involves the aortic and/or mitral valve. Transthoracic echocardiography plays an essential role in the diagnosis, prognosis, and monitoring of such a condition. Typical echocardiographic signs of disease progression include left-sided cardiac dilatation and extension of aortic and/or mitral vegetative lesions. Nevertheless, unexpected complications can sometimes develop, especially in the case of the erosion of the periannular tissue caused by lytic enzymes produced by bacteria. This case report describes the coexistence of multiple, uncommon complications of aortic valve infective endocarditis in a dog, namely, aorto-cavitary fistula, tricuspid valve endocarditis and third-degree atrioventricular block. In this study, the combination of the ante mortem (clinical and echocardiographic) and post mortem (gross pathology and histopathology) findings allowed us to gain detailed information on the disease process, its atypical complications, and the associated emodynamic consequences. Abstract A 2-year-old Boxer with a history of subaortic stenosis and immunosuppressant therapy developed aortic valve infective endocarditis. On echocardiographic examination with simultaneous electrocardiographic tracing, multiple uncommon periannular complications of the aortic valve endocarditis were found, including aorto-cavitary fistula with diastolic left-to-right shunt, tricuspid valve endocarditis, and third-degree atrioventricular block. Necropsy confirmed the above echocardiographic findings. Although aortic valve endocarditis represents a well-known disease entity in dogs, the dynamic nature of this condition may allow development of complex and uncommon echocardiographic features.

Left atrial (LA) speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) provides indices of LA deformation such as strain and strain rate. These variables offer useful clinical information in human and canine patients with cardiac disease. At present, reference ranges for LA STE variables in dogs are scarcely established and, due to variability among centers, they cannot be accepted worldwide. The present study aimed to provide normal ranges for LA strain and strain rate variables in clinically healthy dogs, and to evaluate the effect of clinical parameters such as bodyweight. Eighty clinically healthy dogs served as the study population. Left atrial STE was feasible in all dogs and agreement within and between observers was clinically acceptable for most of the variables, in particular strain variables. Age, sex, and heart rate did not affect LA STE. Bodyweight was negatively correlated with strain variables and positively correlated with diastolic strain rate variables and the relationship was allometric. Bodyweight-based vendor-dependent prediction intervals for LA STE variables in clinically healthy dogs could aid the evaluation of LA function in clinical practice.
