This work concerns a proposal of the integration of InSAR (Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar) data acquired by ground-based (GB) and satellite platforms. The selected test site is the Åknes rockslide, which affects the western Norwegian coast. The availability of GB-InSAR and satellite InSAR data and the accessibility of a wide literature make the landslide suitable for testing the proposed procedure. The first step consists of the organization of a geodatabase, performed in the GIS environment, containing all of the available data. The second step concerns the analysis of satellite and GB-InSAR data, separately. Two datasets, acquired by RADARSAT-2 (related to a period between October 2008 and August 2013) and by a combination of TerraSAR-X and TanDEM-X (acquired between July 2010 and October 2012), both of them in ascending orbit, processed applying SBAS (Small BAseline Subset) method, are available. GB-InSAR data related to five different campaigns of measurements, referred to the summer seasons of 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012, are available, as well. The third step relies on data integration, performed firstly from a qualitative point of view and later from a semi-quantitative point of view. The results of the proposed procedure have been validated by comparing them to GPS (Global Positioning System) data. The proposed procedure allowed us to better define landslide sectors in terms of different ranges of displacements. From a qualitative point of view, stable and unstable areas have been distinguished. In the sector concerning movement, two different sectors have been defined thanks to the results of the semi-quantitative integration step: the first sector, concerning displacement values higher than 10 mm, and the 2nd sector, where the displacements did not exceed a 10-mm value of displacement in the analyzed period.

Permanent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI) has been used to detect and characterize the subsidence of the Pisa urban area, which extends for 33 km2 within the Arno coastal plain (Tuscany, Italy). Two SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) datasets, covering the time period from 1992 to 2010, were used to quantify the ground subsidence and its temporal evolution. A geotechnical borehole database was also used to make a correspondence with the detected displacements. Finally, the results of the SAR data analysis were contrasted with the urban development of the eastern part of the city in the time period from 1978 to 2013. ERS 1/2 (European Remote-Sensing Satellite) and Envisat SAR data, processed with the PSInSAR (Permanent Scatterer InSAR) algorithm, show that the investigated area is divided in two main sectors: the southwestern part, with null or very small subsidence rates (

New stratigraphic data (exposed sections and boreholes) allowed a detailed reconstruction of the northern sector of the "Terrazzo di Livorno" (Central Italy). A new unit, called "Corea formation" was discovered and correlated to marine isotope stage (MIS) 6 and to its transition to MIS 5. This formation comprises, at its base, fluvial gravels and sands followed by fine-grained alluvial plain deposits. Non-marine molluscs, small mammals and pollen allow a reconstruction of the environment present during the deposition of the alluvial plain deposits. The environment was mainly an open space, though sparse woodlands should have been present. The non-marine fauna shows features intermediate between typical interglacial and glacial assemblages described so far in Italy. Worth of note is the presence of Orcula dolium and Vallonia enniensis, which now inhabit northern Italy. These findings improve our knowledge on the biogeography of Quaternary non-marine faunas of Central Italy. Stable isotopes data on land snail shells, freshwater shells and pedogenic carbonates showed that climate conditions were cooler than today (possibly 1-2°C less) with a significant amount of C4 vegetation, in an environment with moderately dry conditions.

Background: Combined anteversion in total hip arthroplasty influences both dislocation risk and range of motion. One of its components, stem version (SV), could be dictated by many factors, from native femoral anatomy to stem geometry and surgeon's choice. In the present multicenter study, robotic technology was used to assess the influence of native femoral version on final SV and combined anteversion using a straight, uncemented stem.Methods: Three hundred sixty-two patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty were enrolled from 3 different orthopedic centers from 2012 and 2016. All patients underwent computed tomography planning with measurement of femoral neck version (FNV) and intraoperative measurement of stem version (SV), acetabular component version (AV), and combined version (CV) with robotic instrumentation.Results: Mean FNV was 5.0° ± 9.6°, and SV was 6.4° ± 9.7°. The average difference between FNV and SV was 1.6° ± 9.8°. A moderate correlation was found between FNV and SV (R = 0.48, P < .001). SV was between 5° and 20° in 174 patients (48%). Mean CV was 28.2° ± 7.9°. A strong correlation was found between SV and CV (R = 0.89, P < .001). A significant difference in SV was found between the 3 centers (P < .001). CV was <25° in 109 patients (30.1%). Relative risk of CV < 25° was 8.6 times greater with SV < 5° (P < .001).Conclusion: With the use of an uncemented, single-wedge, straight stem, SV is highly variable. Despite being moderately correlated with native FNV, SV can be partially influenced by the surgeon. A low SV could be hardly corrected, bringing high risk of low CV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Telemedicine in diabetes includes telemonitoring and transmission of important data (self monitoring of blood glucose data, insulin therapy, pump setting, etc.) from the patient s home to the diabetic unit, with a real-time health feedback. Moreover, an eHealth approach is thought to facilitate diabetes management and to improve compliance to CSII/SAP treatment in adolescents, but to date, limited literature related to this topic is available and long-term studies are still lacking. The main aim of this study was to compare the long-term effect on glycometabolic control of eHealth intervention and traditional care in T1DM SAP-treated adolescents. In our study we demonstrated a favorable impact of monthly teleassistance on treatment compliance. Adolescents receiving frequent feedback provided by the medicalmultidisciplinary team, due to the telemonitoring, resulted more compliant in self-management of diabetes. In particular, the medical team feedback resulted in interventions on behavioral errors and insulin therapy adjustments, leading to an improved glycometabolic control. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study aims at testing the possibility of using the in-situ cosmogenic burial dating technique on deltaic deposits. The sequence analyzed is exposed along the Ligurian coast (north-west Italy) and is made of proximal marine and continental deposits previously considered Pliocene or Plio-Quaternary in age. In the study area two allostratigraphic units were recognized. The lower unit represents the evolution of a small coarse-grained delta developed in a fjord or embayment environment. The coarsening/shallowing upward trend observed within the sections, from bottom to top, suggests that the delta prograded rapidly in the landward portion of the canyon placed opposite to the paleo-river outlet. Within the deltaic sequence the transgressive and highstand system tracts were recognized. The unit 2 is composed by several alluvial fan systems deposited in small incised valleys developed within the previously, uplifted deltaic deposits and successively incised by a braided river system. In-situ produced cosmogenic nuclides were used in order to date the age of the deposition of the deltaic deposits. Results suggest that the studied deltaic sediments belonging to the unit 1 were deposited between 1,300,000 and 200,000 year ago thus during the Lower to Middle Pleistocene, whereas the unit 2 was deposited during the Middle Pleistocene as a consequence of a tectonically driven uplift phase. Furthermore samples collected within the prograding part of the delta show the higher denudation rates. The obtained results demonstrate that burial ages and related erosion rates inferred from cosmogenic nuclides concentrations can be considered as a very useful tool to reconstruct the sea level changes over the past 1 million year. Aims Evidence-based guidelines provide targets and performance measures for the treatment of type 2 diabetic patients but a wide gap separates guidelines-driven recommendations from their clinical application, a phenomenon hindering the transfer of proven benefits to affected populations. Methods We analyzed the quality of diabetic care delivered by 8 general practitioners joint in a group practice attending 571 diabetic patients (5.6% of the total enlisted subjects) by assessing process (% of HbA 1c , SBP and LDL-C determinations) and intermediate outcome (% of patients with HbA 1c <7% vs >8%, systolic BP <130 mmHg vs >140 mmHg, LDL-cholesterol <100 mg/dL vs >130 mg/dL) indicators. Results HbA 1c was at target in 49% of patients and >8% in 22%; SBP and LDL-C determination was available in about two-thirds of patients, only a minority at target for SBP and LDL-C. Antihyperglycemic and antihypertensive treatment was prescribed in most patients but only a third was on statins. During the post-evaluation phase, percentages of patients with HbA 1c >8%, SBP < 130 mmHg and LDL-C < 100 mg/dL and the drug prescription pattern did not change. Conclusions Several weaknesses affect primary care delivery to type 2 diabetic patients and efforts are needed to improve the management of this high-risk group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Buildings are sensitive to movements caused by ground deformation. The mapping both of spatial and temporal distribution, and of the degree of building damages represents a useful tool in order to understand the landslide evolution, magnitude and stress distribution. The high spatial resolution of space-borne SAR interferometry can be used to monitor displacements related to building deformations. In particular, PSInSAR technique is used to map and monitor ground deformation with millimeter accuracy. The usefulness of the above mentioned methods was evaluated in San Fratello municipality (Sicily, Italy), which was historically affected by landslides: the most recent one occurred on 14th February 2010. PSInSAR data collected by ERS 1/2, ENVISAT, RADARSAT-1 were used to study the building deformation velocities before the 2010 landslide. The X-band sensors COSMO-SkyMed and TerraSAR-X were used in order to monitor the building deformation after this event. During 2013, after accurate field inspection on buildings and structures, damage assessment map of San Fratello were created and then compared to the building deformation velocity maps. The most interesting results were obtained by the comparison between the building deformation velocity map obtained through COSMO-SkyMed and the damage assessment map. This approach can be profitably used by local and Civil Protection Authorities to manage the post-event phase and evaluate the residual risks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a study evaluating the association between the type of early feeding and indices of insulin metabolism in 8-year-old overweight and obese children. The study included 350 overweight children and 33 normal-weight control subject who had been exclusively breast-fed or formula-fed for 4 months or longer. The results show that early breast-feeding is associated with better insulin dynamics in overweight/obese children. Consequently, the authors encourage breast-feeding in populations at high risk for metabolic abnormalities.

The article discusses a study that identified the factors related to more aggressive β-cell destruction in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D). Information on T1D is provided including its incidence among younger children. Classification of patients into early onset T1D (EOD) and later onset T1D (LOD) at Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital is cited. Laboratory methods are explained along with the statistical analysis employed. Results are discussed highlighting evidence that EOD children have more severe metabolic decompensation.

A city can be conceived as a complex self-adaptive system. The multiple interactions among its structural elements and dynamic agents, its organization on multiple time-space scales, its exchanges with the external context, its irreversible dynamics, are signs of complexity. Some concepts from the evolutionary thermodynamics, such us the theory of dissipative structures, could be extended to the city in order to investigate its behaviour. This theoretical framework suggests to analyze the city in terms of entropy and negentropy production. An emergy analysis (spelled with an ‘m’) of an urban region is presented in order to investigate how cities maintain their organization (and decrease their entropy) by virtue of constant energy inflows from the external environment. As a result, a non-homogeneous spatial pattern of emergy density is shown as an attempt to investigate the multiple relations and energy exchanges that take place in an urban region.
