A series of issues with toroidally confined fusion plasmas are related to the generation of 3D flow patterns by means of edge magnetic islands, embedded in a chaotic field and interacting with the wall. These issues include the Greenwald limit in Tokamaks and reversed-field pinches, the collisionality window for ELM mitigation with the resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) in Tokamaks, and edge islands interacting with the bootstrap current in stellarators. Measurements of the 2D map of the edge electric field E
r (r = α, ɵ, ø) in the RFX reversed-field pinch show that Er has the same helicity of the magnetic islands generated by a m/n perturbation: in fact, defining the helical angle u = mɵ - nø +ɷt maps show a sinusoidal dependence as a function of u, Er =Er sin u. The associated E×B flow displays a huge convective cell with v(α)≢ 0 which, in RFX and near the Greenwald limit, determines a stagnation point for density and a reversal of the sign of Er . From a theoretical point of view, the question is how a perturbed toroidal flux of symmetry m/n gives rise to an ambipolar potential Φ =Φsin u. On the basis of a model developed with the guiding center code ORBIT and applied to RFX and the TEXTOR tokamak, we will show that the presence of an m/n perturbation in any kind of device breaks the toroidal symmetry with a drift proportional to the gyroradius q, thus larger for ions (ρi⪢ρe). Immediately, an ambipolar potential arises to balance the drifts, with the same symmetry as the original perturbation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

The plasma–wall interaction (PWI) in the reversed field pinch is strongly influenced by three-dimensional edge magnetic topology. This is true both in the chaotic regime, where several modes interact producing a toroidally localized bulge, and in the helical state, which helically modulates the edge profiles. In both regimes an external region with poloidal magnetic islands, toroidally distributed, is present. The density behaviour is also determined by wall recycling, since no divertor or limiters are present and therefore the deformation of the magnetic boundary brings the plasma into contact with a large portion of the wall.In RFX-mod, the shape of PWI results in a modulation of the edge flow, which at high density leads to localized accumulation through the onset of convective cells. The accumulation process is favoured by the high hydrogen retention of the graphite wall combined with high power loads (≈10 MW m
−2 ) which can be locally deposited on the wall.The analysis of the edge plasma behaviour allows the identification of two density thresholds: the first one corresponds to an upper limit for the spontaneous development of the helical states, the second one is related to the onset of MARFE-like poloidal radiative belts. For an effective control of the plasma density through a reduction of wall recycling, a change of the first wall from carbon to tungsten is foreseen. - Abstract
The Genoa Active Message MAchine (GAMMA) is an efficient communication layer for 100base-T clusters of Personal Computers running Linux. It is based on Active Ports, a communication mechanism derived from Active Messages. GAMMA Active Ports deliver excellent communication performance at user level (latency 12.7 Μs, maximum throughput 12.2 MByte/s, half-power point reached with 192 byte long messages), thus enabling cost-effective cluster computing on 100base-T. Despite being implemented at kernel level in the Linux OS, the performance numbers of GAMMA Active Ports are much better than many other LAN-oriented communication layers, including so called "user-level" ones (e.g. U-Net). - Abstract
Shared LAN is presently the most widespread networking technology, due to its extremely low cost and favourable cost/performance ratio. Clusters of Personal Computers (PCs) leveraging shared 100base-T Ethernet may currently offer the best price/performance in parallel processing. Most numerical parallel algorithms make heavy use of collective communications and especially barrier synchronization. Hence a critical issue on PC clusters is to offer efficient implementations of such primitives even though using low-cost, non-switched LAN technology. We implemented and studied some simple barrier synchronization protocols atop the Genoa Active Message MAchine (GAMMA), an efficient Active Messages-like communication layer running on a cluster of Pentium PCs connected by a 100base-TX Ethernet repeater hub. In the case of synchronized or quasi-synchronized processes issuing a barrier synchronization, an obvious way to avoid collisions on shared 100base-T Ethernet is to use a barrier protocol which explicitly serializes all the inter-process synchronization communications over the LAN. We propose alternative barrier protocols which avoid Ethernet collisions during the synchronization phase without requiring such a full explicit serialization. One of such protocols definitely outperforms the fully serialized barrier protocol over 100base-T Ethernet as well as the MPI implementations of barrier synchronization on IBM SP2 and Intel Paragon. 18 pages, 13 figures, 1 table, We present here for the first time a morpho-structural study of the submarine sector of the Ustica volcanic edifice, located in the south-western Tyrrhenian Sea, considered as an inactive volcanic system, middle Pleistocene in age. The main aim of this research study is to unravel the submarine dynamics along the slope sectors of the Ustica volcano, in order to provide new insights on one of the most tectonically active regions of the Central Mediterranean during the Quaternary. We analysed and interpreted an integrated seismo-acoustic data set consisting of multibeam swath-bathymetry, sub bottom profiles, single-channel seismic reflection records, all of them acquired during the last two decades. The seismostratigraphic analysis indicates that the Ustica volcano is composed by a sequence of lava flows and pyroclastic products, whose geometry can be interpreted as the consequence of combined upward growing and northward shifting of the volcanic centers. The mapped geomorphological elements distributed along the submerged slopes were classified based on their specific morphogenetic process. The achieved results reveal that volcanic, tectonic, oceanographic and gravity processes interacted in shaping the complex current physiography of the volcanic edifice, which is characterized by extremely uneven submarine flanks. The northern region is characterized by the widespread occurrence of well-preserved cones, probably linked to the last submarine volcanic activity of the area. Along the eastern sector, elongate gullies and linear furrows locally incise the shelf break and develop downward producing slope failures. Furrows and gullies represent the main conduits for flushing sediments through various types of flows and mass wasting, from the shallow sectors to the bathyal plain. Along the southern and eastern region slope failures processes carve almost totally of the shelf edge and mainly propagate through retrograding collapses. Further on, the southern region is mainly shaped by E-W and N-S trending fault escarpments that may have triggered the largest slope failures of the area. Energy efficiency in the industry sector represents a crucial issue for the sustainable development, but manufacturing companies are not still implementing, on a mass scale, energy saving actions. One of the most important barriers is that many companies are scarcely aware about their consumptions and need reference values to compare their energy performances with similar factories. Nevertheless, since the enterprises are very heterogeneous and the production chains is often fragmented, these values have a high variability. The dispersion of these data has to be decisively decreased, but keeping generality to be representative. This goal is pursued here for the textile sector analysing datasets regarding 140 European factories. The datasets were retrieved by means of a self-analysis software tool, collecting energy consumption data in a simple and homogeneous way. The analysis of the data was performed using energy efficiency indicators and by clustering the factories. The method is here applied to textile industry and the outcomes show a correlation with some production variables, such as the raw materials, the kind of process and the price of the final products. The approach based on a regression analysis between energy consumptions and production has allowed to reduce the relative errors of the energy performances of different categories of factories from more than 100% to about 25–40% in many cases. In this way, energy efficiency indicators can be adopted as acceptable and representative references.

We propose a general framework for the recommendation of possible customers (users) to advertisers (e.g., brands) based on the comparison between On-Line Social Network profiles. In particular, we associate suitable categories and subcategories to both user and brand profiles in the considered On-line Social Network. When categories involve posts and comments, the comparison is based on word embedding, and this allows to take into account the similarity between the topics of particular interest for a brand and the user preferences. Furthermore, user personal information, such as age, job or genre, are used for targeting specific advertising campaigns. Results on real Facebook dataset show that the proposed approach is successful in identifying the most suitable set of users to be used as target for a given advertisement campaign.

Even if energy efficiency represents a crucial issue for the sustainability of the manufacturing industry, the companies need to be encouraged in investing their resources for this goal. One of the means to facilitate this effort is the comparison of the energy performances with similar factories. Nevertheless, since the enterprises are very heterogeneous, these performance values have, even within a specified manufacturing sector, a high variability and therefore risk not to be representative. The dispersion of these data has to be decisively decreased. This goal is pursued here by means of an energy consumption characterization model based on: 1. a self-analysis software tool collecting energy consumption data in a simple and homogeneous way; 2. the clustering of the factories; 3. the separation of the auxiliary energy uses from the production process energy consumption. The method is here applied to textile industry with a focus on the electrical consumption in yarn factories. The outcomes show a correlation with some production variables, such as the raw materials, and allow to reduce the relative errors of the energy performances of different factories from about 80% to about 25-40%. In this way, energy reference indicators can be built in an acceptable and representative way.

The present paper aims to analyse the main barriers and drivers that obstacle and push the adoption of an eBusiness standard, such as eBIZ, and IoT technology, such as RFId, within the fashion industry. This purpose represents the first step of the European project “eBIZ 4.0—Enhancing textile/clothing sector by eBIZ and RFIds technologies adoption”, aiming to promote the integration between RFId technology and eBIZ standard for improving data interoperability among companies operating along the fashion supply chain. The tool used for this kind of analysis has been an online survey dispatched to the mailing list of all the project partners belong to different European Community countries and involving both software houses and fashion companies. The survey results have been crossed with the external variables that characterize the analysed companies, in order to classify the evidences related to one or another cluster of companies similar in terms of external variables such as dimension, headquarter location, industry segment. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.

The paper deal with the preliminary research of the European Prohect eBIZ 4.0 - Enhancing textile/clothing sector by eBIZ and RFIds technologies adoption. The objective of the work is to identify the main barriers and drivers in eBIZ adoption and its connection with RFId technology. The methodologies used in order to achieve the result are the explorative research and a single case based research. The main results of this paper is that the principle obstacle in eBIZ adoption is the lack of knowledge of the standard within both software houses than fashion brands, and the high effort in the implementation within the company. Once the project has started, benefits appear clear both to fashion companies than to software houses, and next steps of the project are carried out with lower efforts. © 2018 IEEE.

The ITER scenarios and the project of DEMO involve stable operation above the Greenwald density, which justifies efforts to understand and overcome the density limit, this last observed as a disruptive termination of tokamak discharges and a thermal crash (with no disruption) of stellarator and reversed-field pinch (RFP) ones. Both in the tokamak and the RFP, new findings show that the high density limit is not governed by a unique, theoretically well-determined physical phenomenon, but by a combination of complex mechanisms involving two-fluid effects, electrostatic plasma response to magnetic islands and plasma-wall interaction. In this paper we will show new evidence challenging the traditional picture of the 'Greenwald limit', in particular with reference to the role of thermal instabilities and the edge radial electric field Er in the development of this limit. © 2015 EURATOM.

RFX-mod [Sonato et al., Fusion Eng. Des. 66, 161 (2003)] exploits its 192 active coils in both reversed-field pinch (RFP) and tokamak configurations with varying degrees of 3D shaping, providing also a test bed for validating stellarator codes and 3D nonlinear magnetohydrodynamic codes. This makes RFX-mod a unique and flexible facility for comparative studies on 3D shaping and control. The paper discusses how 3D fields allow access to RFP and tokamak advanced regimes. 3D fields are used to feedback control Single Helicity (SH) RFP equilibria with 1/7 helicity up to similar to 2 MA. They also allow accessing SH regimes with higher density (Greenwald fraction up to 0.5), presently inaccessible in spontaneous SH regimes. Feedback on the 2/1 resistive-wall mode in RFX-mod tokamak plasmas allows for safe operation at q(a) < 2, an almost unexplored promising regime. Forcing the 2/1 mode to saturate at finite but small level, a helical tokamak equilibrium with significant n=1 modulation is produced and a new way to tailor sawteeth is found. The effects of different levels of 3D shaping on momentum transport in both RFP and tokamak helical states are discussed.

This paper reports the highlights of the RFX-mod fusion science programme since the last 2010 IAEA Fusion Energy Conference. The RFX-mod fusion science programme focused on two main goals: exploring the fusion potential of the reversed field pinch (RFP) magnetic configuration and contributing to the solution of key science and technology problems in the roadmap to ITER. Active control of several plasma parameters has been a key tool in this endeavour. New upgrades on the system for active control of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability are underway and will be presented in this paper. Unique among the existing fusion devices, RFX-mod has been operated both as an RFP and as a tokamak. The latter operation has allowed the exploration of edge safety factor q edge < 2 with active control of MHD stability and studies concerning basic energy and flow transport mechanisms. Strong interaction has continued with the stellarator community in particular on the physics of helical states and on three-dimensional codes. © 2013 IAEA, Vienna.

Due to its flexibility, RFX-mod is contributing to the solution ă of key issues in the roadmap to ITER and DEMO, including MHD instability ă control, internal transport barriers, edge transport and turbulence, ă isotopic effect, high density limit and three-dimensional (3D) ă non-linear MHD modelling. This paper reports recent advancements in the ă understanding of the self-organized helical states, featuring a strong ă electron transport barrier, in the RFP configuration; the physical ă mechanism driving the residual transport at the barrier has been ă investigated. Following the first experiments with deuterium as the ă filling gas, new results concerning the isotope effect in the RFP are ă discussed. Studies on the high density limit show that in the RFP it is ă related to a toroidal particle accumulation due to the onset of a ă convective cell. In the tokamak configuration, q(a) regimes down to q(a) ă = 1.2 have been pioneered, with (2,1) tearing mode (TM) mitigated and ă (2,1) resistive wall mode (RWM) stabilized: the control of such modes ă can be obtained both by poloidal and radial sensors. Progress has been ă made in the avoidance of disruptions due to the (2,1) TM by applying ă q(a) control, and on the general issue of error field control. The ă effect of externally applied 3D fields on plasma flow and edge ă turbulence, sawtooth control and runaway electron decorrelation has been ă analysed. The experimental program is supported by substantial ă theoretical activity: 3D non-linear visco-resistive MHD and non-local ă transport modelling have been advanced; RWMs have been studied by a ă toroidal MHD kinetic hybrid stability code.

- Abstract
Background: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is the most common and clinically significant sleep breathing disorder, with a high prevalence in elderly with cardiovascular diseases . OSA is often under-recognised and under-treated in clinical practice. The aim of this study is to investigate possible differences in major cardiovascular events (MACE) incidence and Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation (PAF) recurrence between patients receiving Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment versus no CPAP treatment, in a cohort of elderly OSA patients with several comorbidities and history of PAF., Methods: In this prospective observational study we enrolled 420 patients aged ≥65 years, suffering from PAF, with a first diagnosis of moderate/severe OSA and indication for CPAP-mode ventilotherapy. Patients underwent clinical-instrumental and laboratory evaluation for a mean follow-up of 22.0 months., Results: CPAP treatment added on usual pharmacological care was associated with a reduced risk of MACE (HR 0.31, p < 0.001) and recurrence of PAF (HR 0.33, p < 0.001)., Conclusion: This study supports the role of moderate/severe OSA as a risk factor for MACE and recurrent AF. Mucinous appendicular neoplasms are a rare and heterogeneous group of tumors, whose treatment may vary based on histologic features and extent. We present a case of low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm mimicking an acute appendicitis scenario. The patient underwent appendectomy along with resection of the caecal fundus. A total of 122 honey samples ( Apis mellifera ssp. Ligustica) collected from Southern Italy were examined for floral identification by melissopalynological examination and for polyphenols detection by an LC-ESI-Orbitrap
TM -MS/MS method. The melissopalynological examination confirmed all the samples examined as fennel ( Foeniculum vulgare ) unifloral variety. The analytical method carried out for polyphenols detection showed satisfactory linearity and recovery values, achieved during the validation of the method. Very high amounts of flavonols (kaempferol and quercetin) and hydroxycinnamic acids (caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid and ferulic acid), were found in all the samples examined. Among the hydroxycinnamic acids group, caffeic acid showed the highest mean contents (865.90 ± 67.07 µg/kg). The results of this work confirmed the high presence of phenolic acids with strong free radical-scavenging activity in fennel products such as honey, suggesting their use to reduce oxidative stress.- Published

95. The Implications of EU Regulation 2016/429 on Neglected Diseases of Small Ruminants including Contagious Agalactia with Particular Reference to Italy.

- Abstract
After almost 40 years, the 27 member states (MS) of the European Union (EU) will comply with the European Law 429/2016 in 2021 by completing a process of unification and harmonization of all regulations related to animal health between MS. These new provisions are based on modern scientific principles on animal health, on long-term epidemiological data, and, above all, on the most current risk assessment and analysis. The paper describes all changes and updates, which will impact the Italian current National regulation. A total of 58 animal diseases have been included in the Annex II ("Listing") and Annex IV ("Categorization") of the new Delegated Act (DA 2018/1629). Five diseases comprising the great viral epizooties were automatically included on the list because of their primary importance. These diseases include foot and mouth disease (FMD), African swine fever (ASF), classical swine fever (CSF), highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), and African horse sickness (AHS). Another 53 diseases have been identified by the ad hoc assessment on listing and categorization of animal diseases developed by the European Food Safety Association. Seventeen communicable diseases of the Order Artiodactlya (sheep, goats, deer, etc.) have been listed including foot and mouth disease, sheep and goat pox, and pestes de petits ruminants. In addition, other endemic diseases affecting more than one species include blue tongue, tuberculosis, brucellosis, and anthrax. There are five categories (A-E) based on the degree of action to be undertaken throughout the EU for each disease. These vary from complete eradication for diseases not normally found in the EU like FMD (category A) for establishing surveillance for diseases like West Nile that present high risk but lack control tools (category E).

Splenic artery aneurysm (SAA) is the most common aneurysm of visceral vessels. Usually the rupture occurs into the free peritoneal cavity and causes massive bleeding, much less frequently the rupture happens into the lumen of the gastrointestinal tract. We describe the case of a 39-year-old male patient with a spontaneous rupture of a splenic artery aneurysm and an acute massive peritoneal bleeding. The case described confirms the rupture of SAA is always a dramatic event and an emergency laparotomy is a life-saving procedure.

- Abstract
WDLPS are very rare retroperioneal tumors that can reach huge size before becoming symptomatic. The aim of this article is show the diagnostic management and the surgical approach to giant WDLPS. A standard treatment has yet to be established because the pre-operative diagnosis is very difficult. We present a case of a 69-year-old male patient with progressive increase of abdominal girth, weight loss and light abdominal pain and with an abdominal mass of over 15 kg that displaced the right kidney. A complete tumor resection and right nephrectomy were performed. Histology revealed a well-differentieated liposarcoma. CT scan is the most common imaging technique and laparotomic open radical resection represent the most common surgical approach.

- Abstract
In highly polluted water, fish can accumulate mercury up to a concentration of 10 mgKg
-1 . This has occurred on the eastern coasts of Sicily (Southern Italy), probably due to the intense industrial activity of this area. However, little is known about Hg accumulation in fish of the western Sicilian coasts. In this work, we examined the Hg accumulation of 108 fish samples belonging to 14 species collected from western Sicilian coasts using a direct mercury analyzer. The samples showed a mean mercury concentration of 0.165 ± 0.22 mg kg-1 with a maximum in Lepidopus caudatus (1.72 mgKg-1 ), exceeding the limits provided by EC Reg. 1881/2006. The lowest Hg levels were found in Sparus aurata samples (0.001 mgKg-1 ). A significant difference was found between the fish species examined ( p < 0.05). The comparison between benthic and pelagic species did not show statistical differences ( p < 0.05). Fish food constitutes the main route of Hg uptake for humans. Only four of the 130 samples examined reached a mercury concentration over the European limits. The comparative analysis of Hg pollution for benthic and pelagic species did not confirm a different trend in metal contamination.- Published

- Abstract
Achalasia is an esophageal motility disorder for which the pathophysiology is only partially known for the idiopathic subtype. Many factors are known to be involved with the development of secondary achalasia. Neurofibromatosis is one of the most common autosomal dominant conditions affecting the nervous system, and 25% of those with the disease have been reported to have involvement of the gastrointestinal tract. Three cases of association between neurofibromatosis and achalasia have been reported in the literature so far. Laparoscopic Heller myotomy is the gold standard surgical treatment for patients with achalasia, whereas esophagectomy is reserved for the more advanced stages of disease. There have been reports of successful long-term results in patients with stage IV achalasia treated with Heller myotomy. We report the fourth case in the literature of association between achalasia and neurofibromatosis; it is the first time that such an association is successfully treated with laparoscopic Heller myotomy.
