Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is particularly challenging due to the weak or absent response to therapeutics and its poor prognosis. The effectiveness of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) response is strongly influenced by changes in elements of the tumor microenvironment (TME). This work aimed to characterize the residual TME composition in 96 TNBC patients using immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization techniques and evaluate its prognostic implications for partial responders vs. non-responders. Compared with non-responders, partial responders containing higher levels of CD83+ mature dendritic cells, FOXP3+ regulatory T cells, and IL-15 expression but lower CD138+ cell concentration exhibited better OS and RFS. However, along with tumor diameter and positive nodal status at diagnosis, matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) expression in the residual TME was identified as an independent factor associated with the impaired response to NAC. This study yields new insights into the key components of the residual tumor bed, such as MMP-9, which is strictly associated with the lack of a pathological response to NAC. This knowledge might help early identification of TNBC patients less likely to respond to NAC and allow the establishment of new therapeutic targets.

Prenatal nutrition plays a crucial role in maternal and child health. This study aims to compare nutrient intake and its adequacy to recommendations among pregnant women in Spain and Poland. The ECLIPSES study in Spain utilized a self-administered food frequency questionnaire, while the PREDISH study in Poland employed a 3-day interview method. We assessed energy and nutrient intake against recommended dietary allowances. The analysis included 583 participants in the first trimester and 465 participants in the third trimester from both countries. Our findings revealed insufficient intake of iron, vitamin D, and vitamin B9 among pregnant women in both Spain and Poland. Significant differences were observed in the intake of energy, carbohydrates, fiber, calcium, iron, and vitamins D, E, C, B6, B9, and B12. Notably, 81.6% and 21.5% of participants did not meet the recommended minimum carbohydrate intake, while 99.8% and 43.8% exceeded the limit for total fat, particularly monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs). Tailored dietary guidance based on regional differences is crucial for pregnant women. Although variations in dietary intake were observed, both Spain and Poland faced similar risks of nutritional deficiencies, particularly for iron, vitamin D, and vitamin B9. These findings emphasize the need for enhanced efforts in preventing these deficiencies and promoting optimal prenatal nutrition.

Una parte importante en el diseño arquitectónico son los materiales de acabado. Desde la antigüedad, los revestimientos en materiales nobles, principalmente pétreos, significaban magnificencia. Es evidente que existía una tecnología para la transformación de piedras de cantera en losas con máquinas de serrar piedras. Un ejemplo importante proviene de las excavaciones arqueológicas, realizadas en 1930, del templo de Artemisa de Jerash (S.VI dC), en el cual se descubrieron unas instalaciones catalogadas como un taller de aserrado de piedras. La eficiencia, modo de construcción de tales máquinas y su resistencia no han sido estudiadas con anterioridad al presente artículo. En este trabajo definimos estos parámetros para la máquina de serrar ubicada en Jerash.

Several studies have shown an independent relationship between body mass index (BMI) and the incidence of atrial fibrillation (AF). However, little is known about the influence of BMI on AF recurrence after electrical cardioversion (ECV).We selected 1121 patients who reverted to sinus rhythm after scheduled ECV and were included in three prospective Spanish registries of ECV in persistent AF. The patients were classified according to baseline BMI into three categories (normal weight, overweight, obesity). We assessed the influence of BMI on the rate of AF recurrence at 3 months.We identified 538 patients (48%) who had AF recurrence in the first 3 months after successful ECV. The patients who suffered AF recurrence had a higher BMI than those who remained in sinus rhythm (29.66±4.57 vs. 28.87±4.64 Kg/m2, respectively; p = 0.004). We observed a higher incidence of AF recurrence in the overweight and obese patients (BMI ≥25 kg/m2) than in those classified as normal weight (50.5% vs. 35.6%, respectively; p<0,001). BMI≥25 Kg/m2 was shown to be independently related to of AF recurrence in the multivariate analysis (OR = 1.75, 95% confidence interval = 1.20-2.58; p = 0.004).Increased BMI is independently related to AF recurrence after ECV. The associations between circulating vitamin D concentrations and total and site-specific colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence have been examined in several epidemiological studies with overall inconclusive findings. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis of both case-control and prospective cohort studies was to evaluate the association between CRC and circulating levels of vitamin D. The main exposure and outcome were circulating total 25(OH)D and CRC, respectively, in the overall population (i.e., all subjects). Two reviewers, working independently, screened all the literature available to identify studies that met the inclusion criteria (e.g., case-control or prospective cohort studies, published in English, and excluding non-original papers). Data were pooled by the generic inverse variance method using a random or fixed effect model, as approriate. Heterogeneity was identified using the Cochran's Q-test and quantified by the I-2 statistic. Results were stratified by study design, sex, and metabolite of vitamin D. Sensitivity and subgroup analyses were also performed. A total of 28 original studies were included for the quantitative meta-analysis. Meta-analyses comparing the highest vs lowest categories, showed a 39% lower risk between levels of total 25(OH)D and CRC risk (OR (95% CI): 0.61 (0.52; 0.71); 11 studies) in case-control studies; whereas a 20% reduced CRC risk in prospective cohort studies (HR (95% CI): 0.80 (0.66; 0.97); 6 studies). Results in women mirrored main results, whereas results in men were non-significant in both analyses. Our findings support an inverse association between circulating vitamin D levels and CRC risk.

The experimental details reported in preclinical fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) protocols are highly inconsistent, variable, and/or incomplete. We therefore evaluated FMT from a human donor to antibiotic-induced microbial-depleted mice by exploring the effects of six techniques based on antibiotic (AB) or antibiotic + antimycotic (AB + T) gut decontamination, different administration routes, and different dosing intervals on the gut microbial population, assessed using 16S and 18S sequencing. In addition, we explored the effectiveness of FMT in terms of inflammation, physiological, and behavioral outcomes. Our results showed that intrarectal FMT at low dosing intervals better preserved the donor's gut bacterial community at genus level. Furthermore, we showed a lower abundance of several genera of fungi in animals treated with AB + T. In addition, we observed that AB + T gut decontamination followed by per os FMT, once every 3 days, affected behavioral parameters when compared to other FMT techniques. Accordingly, the same FMT groups that showed an association with some of the behavioral tests were also related to specific gut fungal genera, suggesting a possible mediation. Our findings may be useful for optimizing the practice of FMT and also in terms of donor microbiota preservation. This information may help to improve the reproducibility and reliability of FMT studies.

Featured Application: Electrical and electronic devices that experience long-term vibrations. Electrical boards, also called printed circuit boards, constitute the basis of most electronic devices. These boards are mainly fabricated of thin copper films bonded to fiber epoxy laminates, such as FR4. Being the most important functional component of these devices, they sometimes undergo mechanical stresses such as shock and vibration during transport and operation that can induce electrical failure and malfunction; hence, studies addressing the effects of vibrations on their electrical properties have important applications. In this paper, small cantilever samples made of bare copper bonded to FR4 with three isolated rectangular zones were studied to analyze, for the first time, variations in electrical properties such as sheet resistance and resistivity before and after 200 k, 500 k, and 800 k vibration cycles at three different temperatures (25, 35, and 45 °C). A significant rise in resistance equivalent to 1657% of the initial value was observed from 0 to 800 k vibration cycles. These changes were accompanied by a 95% decrease in conductivity, from 4.1 × 107 to 2.3 × 106 S/m, whereas very little change in the electrical properties was observed due to temperature rise. Surface analysis by ESEM showed cracks ~1 µm in width and several millimeters in length with a crack density of ~8 cracks per mm after 800 k cycles. The surface composition (100% copper) was not altered even upon a high number of vibration cycles, and static drop contact angle measurements of 117–119 degrees indicated an increase in the hydrophobicity of the surface attributed to increased surface roughness and the accumulation of very small air bubbles on the cracks.

Lemon oil is widely used for food flavoring purposes, but due to its low water solubility and tendency to oxidation, requires encapsulation in oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions. Therefore, this study assesses the use of two natural biopolymers and a tailor-made one to encapsulate lemon oil with a dynamic membrane of tunable pore size (DMTS). This emulsification system, consisting of an outer bed layer of silica beads sitting upon a metal microporous metallic membrane, overcomes the limitations of conventional emulsification membranes, such as low throughput, complex cleaning before reuse, fixed membrane thickness and pore size, and significative protein fouling. The effects of the DMTS characteristics on the droplet size distribution and emulsion productivity were studied. The results demonstrate that mono-dispersed emulsions can be obtained using dynamic membranes for all the biopolymers studied and the productivity can reach 1000 m3 m−2h−1 pointing out the suitability of this system for scale-up.

Huge plastic consumption and depletion of fossil fuels are at the top of the world's envi-ronmental and energy challenges. The scientific community has tackled these issues through differ-ent approaches. Catalytic pyrolysis of plastic wastes to valuable products has been proved as a sustainable route which fits with the circular economy aspects. The design of catalytic materials is the central factor for performing the catalytic conversion of plastic wastes. This review aims to conduct a Bibliometric analysis of the pyrolysis of plastic wastes and non-precious-based catalysts by mapping research studies over the last fifty years. The analysis was developed via VOSviewer and RStudio tools. It showed the historical progress regarding plastic waste pyrolysis to produce valu-able products and chemicals worldwide. The research shows that the top five countries with the highest citations and publications in this field were Spain, China, England, the USA and India. The Journal of Analytical and Applied Pyrolysis had the most comprehensive coverage of plastic waste. The relationship between the catalyst and the mechanism of plastic waste can influence the production yield and selectivity. The research gap and underrepresented research topics were iden-tified, and previous research studies on developing non-precious-based catalysts that were most rel-evant to the current topic were reviewed and discussed. The challenges and perspectives on catalyst preparation and development for material complexity were critically discussed. Challenges of pre-vious studies and directions for future research were provided. This study investigates the suitability of using waste material from date palm trees in thermal insulation for buildings in arid climates. Thermal conductivity was experimentally determined from a few samples of bricks containing recycled date palm fiber (DPF) and date palm spikelet (DPS). Among the samples investigated, the one containing 1.36% DPS in weight demonstrated the best characteristics for insulation purposes yielding a thermal conductivity of 0.106 W/m.K. Theoretical and experimental investigations were carried out on walls and roofs built using DPS and DPF material to see what impact it would have on energy efficiency and thermal comfort. The electricity consumption for cooling decreased by up to 64.7% and 41.2%, during the summer months, for DPS and DPF, respectively, compared to buildings erected with sand and clay. It was also concluded that the greatest amount of thermal energy entering the rooms takes place through the roofs. Four roof-materials were tested, namely: Polystyrene, Air gap, DPF, and DPP on three different days. As a thermal insulator, DPF demonstrated the best thermal comfort conditions; polyester yielded poorer thermal comfort conditions and DPP delivered rather weak results.

Carbon materials and their diverse allotropes have played important roles in our daily lives and the advancement of material science. After 0D “Carbon 60” and 1D “carbon-nanotube,” 2D-graphene nanomaterials have attracted significant attention since 2004 because of their unique and exciting properties. Over the last decade, 3D-graphene nanomaterials have been developed to efficiently use 2D-graphene nanosheets in applications like energy storage, environmental remediation, and electrochemical catalysis. We describe 3D graphene materials, classify them, briefly discuss their history, and cover this review's basic synthesis chemical procedures. Special attention is given to their bibliometric analysis, advancement, synthesis, technical applications of energy storage devices, environmental applications, and supercapacitor-based applications. The CiteSpace (6.1. R3) software is used for the bibliometric analysis findings from 2012 to 2023 for keywords, countries, journals, co-occurrence, and co-author networks. Data were taken from 1142 papers, 71 review articles, and 1071 article proceedings over 12 years, from 2012 to 2023. The date of retrieval, November 10, 2022, was the latest.

The polymerization of dendronized monomers is an attractive option to synthesize liquid crystalline columnar polymers with side chain dendrons. Following this approach, we report for the first time in the present study the synthesis of a family of side chain liquid crystalline (SCLC) poly(2-oxazoline)s, poly(2-(3,4,5-tris(4-dodecyloxybenzyloxy)phenyl)-2-oxazoline) (PTOx) from its oxazoline monomer precursor, 2-(3,4,5-tris(4-dodecyloxybenzyloxy)phenyl)-4,5-dihydro-1,3-oxazole) (TAPOx), by cationic ring-opening polymerization (CROP). The optimisation of the reaction parameters (temperature, type of initiator, terminating agent, solvent and monomer concentration), combined with the nature of the CROP allowed us to obtain high molecular weight SCLC poly(2-oxazoline)s. NMR investigations were consistent with the targeted molecular weights of the synthesized PTOx and the living nature of TAPOx polymerization. Regarding the mesomorphic characterization, all synthesized acyl-substituted poly(ethyleneimine)s exhibited liquid crystalline mesophases in a broad temperature range. XRD studies demonstrated that these dendronized poly(2-oxazoline)s self-assemble into columnar structures. Mesomorphic and thermal properties suggest that these family of poly(2-oxazoline)s could be excellent candidates to build up membranes for proton transport applications.

To support and move toward a sustainable bioeconomy, the production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) using renewable biomass has acquired more attention. However, expensive biomass pretreatment and low yield of PHAs pose significant disadvantages in its large-scale production. To overcome such limitations, the most recent advances in metabolic engineering strategies used to develop high-performance strains that are leading to a new manufacturing concept converting biomass to PHAs with co-products such as amino acids, proteins, biohydrogen, biosurfactants, and various fine chemicals are critically summarized. This review article presents a comprehensive roadmap that highlights the integrated biorefinery strategies, lifecycle analysis, and techno-economic assessment for sustainable and economic PHAs production. Finally, current and future challenges that must be addressed to transfer this technology to real-world applications are reviewed.

Background & aims: Short telomeres have been observed in chronic disease patients. Identifying environmental and lifestyle factors that could reduce telomere attrition is crucial for disease prevention. The aim of this work was to determine whether weight-loss induced by an energy-reduced Mediterranean diet (erMedDiet) and physical activity (PA) could modify telomere length (TL). Methods: In 317 randomized non-smoker participants (mean age, 65.8 ± 4.98 years) with metabolic syndrome from two “Prevención con Dieta Mediterránea-Plus” (PREDIMED-Plus) trial centers, we evaluated MedDiet adherence, PA, anthropometric variables and TL at baseline and after a 3-year intervention using an intensive lifestyle program (IG) with an erMedDiet and PA or an unrestricted MedDiet without PA promotion (CG). Results: Participants in the IG displayed greater 3-year weight reductions (−3.7 ± 4 kg, P < 0.001) compared to those in the CG. No differences in TL changes between groups were observed in the cohort as a whole. However, an interaction was observed between the intervention group and sex for TL changes (pinteraction = 0.039). Women in the IG showed an increase in TL after 3-y (+0.25 ± 0.9, relative units) compared to women in the CG (−0.07 ± 1.0) (pANCOVA = 0.036), whereas no differences between groups were observed in men. Women in the IG had a lower risk of telomere shortening after the intervention (OR = 0.17, 95%CI: 0.05–0.64, p = 0.008) compared to women in the CG. Conclusions: A 3-year lifestyle intervention based on an erMedDiet and PA slowed telomere shortening in women but not in men. Trial registration: ISRCTN, ISRCTN89898870. The progressive industrialization has resulted in an increase in heavy metal pollution in the environment, which has a dangerous impact on human health. Prenatal exposure to heavy metals, even at very low concentrations, may be especially harmful to pregnant women and their children. Different industrial activities can contribute to heavy metal pollution in a specific area.1) To explore the concentrations of heavy metals in urine samples of pregnant women, and 2) to evaluate the potential effect of different industrial activities in Tarragona (Spain).Urinary levels of four heavy metals (nickel (Ni), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), and lead (Pb)) from 368 pregnant women recruited in the ECLIPSES study were analyzed. Home addresses and all the industries potentially releasing heavy metals were geo-referenced. Buffer zones were established within a 1.5, 3, and 5 km radius at the center of each industry. Subsequently, the number of participants living in and out of each buffer zone was recorded.Urinary levels of Ni and Cd, but not those of Hg and Pb, were obviously increased in pregnant women living near most of the industrial sites. After adjustment for potential co-variates, only Cd showed notable differences according to the industrial activity. Compared to women living outside the buffer, Cd levels were increased in those living within 1.5 and 3 km of chemical industries, within 5 km of energy industries, within 1.5, 3, and 5 km of mineral industries, and within 3 and 5 km of metal processing industries.Among the analyzed heavy metals, Cd showed an increasing trend in urinary concentrations in women living near chemical, energy, mineral, and metal processing industries. This work demonstrates for the first-time biobased, temperature-responsive diblock copolymer nanoparticles synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) aqueous emulsion polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA). Here, monomers derived from green solvents of the lactic acid portfolio, N,N-dimethyl lactamide acrylate (DMLA) and ethyl lactate acrylate (ELA), were used. First, DMLA was polymerized by RAFT aqueous solution polymerization to produce a hydrophilic PDMLA macromolecular chain transfer agent (macro-CTA), which was chain extended with ELA in water to form amphiphilic PDMLA-b-PELA diblock copolymer nanoparticles by RAFT aqueous emulsion polymerization. PDMLAx homopolymers were synthesized targeting degrees of polymerization, DPx from 25 to 400, with relatively narrow molecular weight dispersities (Đ < 1.30). The PDMLA64-b-PELAy diblock copolymers (DPy = 10-400) achieved dispersities, Đ, between 1.18 and 1.54 with two distinct glass transition temperatures (Tg) identified by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Tg(1) (7.4 to 15.7 °C) representative of PELA and Tg(2) (69.1 to 79.7 °C) of PDMLA. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) studies gave particle z-average diameters between 11 and 74 nm (PDI = 0.04 to 0.20). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) showed evidence of spherical particles when dispersions were dried at ∼5 °C and film formation when dried at room temperature. Many of these polymers exhibited a reversible lower critical solution temperature (LCST) in water with a concomitant increase in z-average diameter for the PDMLA-b-PELA diblock copolymer nanoparticles.

Two saccharine-based electrophilic reagents were developed for the direct introduction of SCH2CF3 and SCH2CF2H motifs via a C−S bond forming reaction. Their large-scale preparation and reactivity performance has been carefully examined, enabling access to a series of indoles through open-flask reactions. Sulfone and sulfoxide analogs (S(O)nCH2RF, n=1,2) are also accessible by sequential oxidation reactions. (Figure presented.).

Obesity is a chronic and complex disease, with an increasing incidence worldwide that is associated with metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Thus, it is important to determine the differences between metabolically healthy obese individuals and those with metabolic disorders. The aim of this study was to perform an untargeted metabolomics assay in women with morbid obesity (MO) compared to a normal weight group, and to differentiate the metabolome of these women with MO who present with T2DM. We carried out a liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-based untargeted metabolomics assay using serum samples of 209 Caucasian women: 73 with normal weight and 136 with MO, of which 71 had T2DM. First, we found increased levels of choline and acylglycerols and lower levels of bile acids, steroids, ceramides, glycosphingolipids, lysophosphatidylcholines, and lysophosphatidylethanolamines in MO women than in the control group. Then, in MO women with T2DM, we found increased levels of glutamate, propionyl-carnitine, bile acids, ceramides, lysophosphatidylcholine 14:0, phosphatidylinositols and phosphoethanolamines, and lower levels of Phe-Ile/Leu. Thus, we found metabolites with opposite trends of concentration in the two metabolomic analyses. These metabolites could be considered possible new factors of study in the pathogenesis of MO and associated T2DM in women.

To evaluate the changes in the gut microbiota associated with changes in the biochemical markers of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) after a lifestyle intervention with the Mediterranean diet. Participants (n = 297) from two centers of PREDIMED-Plus trial (Prevención con Dieta Mediterránea) were divided into three different groups based on the change tertile in the Hepatic Steatosis Index (HSI) or the Fibrosis-4 score (FIB-4) between baseline and one year of intervention. One-year changes in HSI were: tertile 1 (T1) (-24.9 to -7.51), T2 (-7.5 to -1.86), T3 (-1.85 to 13.64). The most significant differences in gut microbiota within the year of intervention were observed in the T1 and T3. According to the FIB-4, participants were categorized in non-suspected fibrosis (NSF) and with indeterminate or suspected fibrosis (SF). NSF participants showed higher abundances of Alcaligenaceae, Bacteroidaceae, Bifidobacteriaceae, Clostridiaceae, Enterobacteriaceae, Peptostreptococcaceae, Verrucomicrobiaceae compared to those with SF. Then, participants were divided depending on the FIB-4 tertile of change: T1 (-89.60 to -5.57), T2 (-5.56 to 11.4), and T3 (11.41 to 206.24). FIB-4 T1 showed a decrease in Akkermansia and an increase in Desulfovibrio. T2 had an increase in Victivallaceae, Clostridiaceae, and Desulfovibrio. T3 showed a decrease in Enterobacteriaceae, and an increase in Sutterella, Faecalibacterium, and Blautia. A relation between biochemical index changes of NAFLD/NASH (HSI and FIB-4) and gut microbiota changes were found. These observations highlight the importance of lifestyle intervention in the modulation of gut microbiota and the management of metabolic syndrome and its hepatic manifestations.

The encapsulation of bluing agents in biodegradable polymeric capsules is an emerging option in laundry detergents sector to substitute formaldehyde-based polymers, because they are non-biodegradable, carcinogenic and toxic. In this work, we present for the first time the successful encapsulation of a blue dye in biodegradable capsules which shell was formed by an alginate hydrogel and a polyethylene glycol network. Different types of capsules were synthesized (addition or not of the diacrylate monomer) and irradiation of the crosslinking solution at different times. Furthermore, a deep characterization of each type of capsules was performed (chemical and morphological characterization, assessment of their mechanical and thermal properties, evaluation of their biodegradability), noting that the incorporation of the diacrylate monomer (PEGDMA) and the two different irradiation times selected substantially affected the final properties of the capsules. The use of Torulaspora delbrueckii in the alcoholic fermentation (AF) of grape must is increasingly studied and used in the wine industry. In addition to the organoleptic improvement of wines, the synergy of this yeast species with the lactic acid bacterium Oenococcus oeni is an interesting field of study. In this work, 60 strain combinations were compared: 3 strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (Sc) and 4 strains of Torulaspora delbrueckii (Td) in sequential AF, and four strains of O. oeni (Oo) in malolactic fermentation (MLF). The objective was to describe the positive or negative relationships of these strains with the aim of finding the combination that ensures better MLF performance. In addition, a new synthetic grape must has been developed that allows the success of AF and subsequent MLF. Under these conditions, the Sc-K1 strain would be unsuitable for carrying out MLF unless there is prior inoculation with Td-Prelude, Td-Viniferm or Td-Zymaflore always with the Oo-VP41 combination. However, from all the trials performed, it appears that the combinations of sequential AF with Td-Prelude and Sc-QA23 or Sc-CLOS, followed by MLF with Oo-VP41, reflected a positive effect of T. delbrueckii compared to inoculation of Sc alone, such as a reduction in L-malic consumption time. In conclusion, the obtained results highlight the relevance of strain selection and yeast-LAB strain compatibility in wine fermentations. The study also reveals the positive effect on MLF of some T. delbrueckii strains.

Monitoring and updating calibration models are common tasks when analytical methods are based on near-infrared spectroscopy. This work describes a situation in which a PLS calibration model that is used routinely for the determination of phosphorus content in pig faeces in digestibility studies had to be updated in order to be used with the faeces collected in a new trial with phytases. An approach based on D-optimality is presented that selects a reduced number of the new samples to be analyzed with the reference analytical method so that the small set is used to confirm the need to update the model and validate it. The rest of the new samples that had not been selected by the algorithm were accurately predicted with the updated model. The updated model maintained its previous performance for the samples in the validation set (an RMSEP of 1.58 g kg−1 compared with an RMSEP of 1.54 g kg−1 before the update) and the prediction error for the new samples was RMSECV = 1.95 g kg−1, much lower than the RMSEP = 11.38 g kg−1 obtained before the model update. In addition, the predictive ability of the updated PLS model was significantly better than updated models selecting the reduced dataset using other sample selection methods such as Kennard-Stone, a leverage-based selection method and random selection.

This study describes a new and fast method for separating 210Po from 210Pb and 90Sr, before simultaneously measuring the individual activities of the latter two radionuclides using a plastic scintillation resin (PSresin) in sludge samples taken from a drinking water treatment plant. This method speeds up the analysis process significantly by simultaneously measuring 210Pb and 90Sr in a single step. The method is reproducible and has a relative standard deviation of less than 25% for 210Pb, 210Po and 90Sr. The method was satisfactorily validated with an intercomparison sample and applied to sludge samples from a drinking water treatment plant. The minimum detectable activities for 0.9 g of sludge are 5.5 Bq/kg and 8 Bq/kg for 210Pb and 90Sr respectively when measured for 180 min, and 0.5 Bq/kg for 210Po when measured for 5000 min.

Tomatoes are widely consumed worldwide at any time of the year. However, depending on the variety, they have a characteristic season. We evaluated the consequences metabolic of consumption of Ekstasis tomatoes from different geographical origin and in different seasons in Fischer 344 rats. The hepatic gene expression of key enzymes in lipid metabolism was also evaluated. Animals were classified in three photoperiods (L6, L12, and L18) and in three treatments (vehicle: VH; local tomato: LT; and non-local tomato: nLT). We measured serum metabolic parameters and the gene expression of liver enzymes related to lipid metabolism (Acc1, Cpt1a, Had, Fas1, Srebp-1c, Fatp5, Cd36). LT consumption in season decreased cardiovascular risk 1 and coefficient atherogenic by 1.81 (p = 0.031) and in L6 decreased TAG and glucose (p = 0.046; p = 0.024). The L18-LT animals had decreased total cholesterol (p = 0.029) and gene expression of Srebp1-c (p = 0.022) but increased expression of Acc1 (p = 0.032). The treatments significantly affected the expression of Acc1 and Fas1 in the liver and the levels of serum TAG and glucose. A significant effect of photoperiod on serum concentration of glucose, insulin, HOMA index, and on the hepatic expression of Srep1-c, Fas1, and Acc1 was observed.

Headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME/GC-MS), sensory evaluation, and multivariate analysis were applied to monitor and compare the evolution of the aromatic profile of a lager beer in different types of containers (aluminum cans and glass bottles) during the natural ageing process. Samples were aged naturally for a year in the absence of light with a controlled temperature of around 14 °C +/? 0.5 °C. The sensory evaluation applied was a blind olfactometric triangle test between canned and bottled samples at different periods of aging: fresh, 6 months, and 11 months. The sensory evaluation showed that the panelists were able to differentiate between samples, except for the fresh samples from the brewery. A total of 34 volatile compounds were identified using the HS-SPME/GC-MS technique for both packaging types in this experiment. The application of multivariate analysis to the GC-MS data showed that the samples could not be differentiated according to the type of packaging but could be differentiated by the ageing time. The results showed that the combination of sensory, HS-SPME-GC-MS, and multivariate analysis seemed to be a valuable tool for monitoring and identifying possible changes in the aroma profile of a beer during its shelf life. Furthermore, the results showed that storing beer under optimal conditions helped preserve its quality during its shelf life, regardless of the type of packaging (aluminum can and glass bottle).

A green screening method to determine cashew nut adulteration with Brazilian nut, pecan nut, macadamia nut and peanut was proposed. The method was based on the development of a one-class soft independent modelling of class analogy (SIMCA) model for non-adulterated cashew nuts using near-infrared (NIR) spectra obtained with portable equipment. Once the model is established, the assignment of unknown samples depends on the threshold established for the authentic class, which is a key aspect in any screening approach. The authors propose innovatively to define two thresholds: lower model distance limit and upper model distance limit. Samples with distances below the lower threshold are assigned as non-adulterated with a 100% probability; samples with distance values greater than the upper threshold are assigned as adulterated with a 100% probability; and samples with distances within these two thresholds will be considered uncertain and should be submitted to a confirmatory analysis. Thus, the possibility of error in the sample assignment significantly decreases. In the present study, when just one threshold was defined, values greater than 95% for the optimized threshold were obtained for both selectivity and specificity. When two class thresholds were defined, the percentage of samples with uncertain assignment changes according to the adulterant considered, highlighting the case of peanuts, in which 0% of uncertain samples was obtained. Considering all adulterants, the number of samples that were submitted to a confirmatory analysis was quite low, 5 of 224 adulterated samples and 3 of 56 non-adulterated samples.

The aim of this study was to assess the effects of a mixture of four dietary fibers on obese rats. Four groups of male Wistar rats were fed with either standard chow (STD) or cafeteria diet (CAF) and were orally supplemented with either fibre mixture (2 g kg−1 of body weight) (STD+F or CAF+F groups) or vehicle (STD+VH or CAF+VH groups). We studied a wide number of biometric, biochemical, transcriptomic, metagenomic and metabolomic variables and applied an integrative multivariate approach based on multiple factor analysis and Pearson's correlation analysis. A significant reduction in body weight, adiposity, HbA1c and HDL-cholesterol serum levels, and colon MPO activity was observed, whereas cecal weight and small intestine length:weight ratio were significantly increased in F-treated groups compared to control animals. CAF+F rats displayed a significant enhancement in energy expenditure, fat oxidation and fresh stool weight, and a significant reduction in adiponectin and LPS serum levels, compared to control group. Animals in STD+F group showed reduced serum LDL-cholesterol levels and a significant reduction in total cholesterol levels in the liver compared to STF+VH group. The intervention effect was reflected at the metabolomic (i.e., production of short-chain fatty acids, phenolic acids, and amino acids), metagenomic (i.e., modulation of Ruminococcus and Lactobacillus genus) and transcriptomic (i.e., expression of tight junctions and proteolysis) levels. Altogether, our integrative multi-omics approach highlights the potential of supplementation with a mixture of fibers to ameliorate the impairments triggered by obesity in terms of adiposity, metabolic profile, and intestinal health.

Environmental pollution, climate change, and fossil fuel extinction have aroused serious global interest in the search for alternative energy sources. The dry reforming of methane (DRM) could be a good technique to harness syngas, a starting material for the FT energy process from greenhouse gases. Noble metal DRM catalysts are effective for the syngas generation but costly. Therefore, they inevitably, must be replaced by their Ni-based contemporaries for economic reasons. However, coking remains a strong challenge that impedes the industrialization of the FT process. This article explains the secondary reactions that lead to the production of detrimental graphitic coke deposition on the surface of active nickel catalyst. The influence of nickel particle size, impact of extra surface oxygen species, interaction of Ni catalysts with metal oxide supports/promoters, and larger fraction of exposed nickel active sites were addressed in this review. Size of active metal determines the conversion, surface area, metal dispersion, surface reactions, interior diffusion effects, activity, and yield. The influence of oxygen vacancy and coke deposition on highly reported metal oxide supports/promoters (Al2O3, MgO and La2O3) was postulated after studying CIFs (crystallographic information files) obtained from the Crystallography open database (COD) on VESTA software. Thus, overcoming excessive coking by La2O3 promotion is strongly advised in light of the orientation of the crystal lattice characteristics and the metal-support interaction can be used to enhance activity and stability in hydrogen reforming systems.

The catalytic conversion of CO(2)via the Reverse Water Gas Shift (RWGS) reaction for CO production is a promising environment-friendly approach. The greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels can be used to produce valuable fuels or chemicals through CO2 hydrogenation. Therefore, this project was to study the CO2 conversion via RWGS over various Cu/ZnO catalysts supported by regenerated spent bleaching earth (RSBE) prepared by wet impregnation technique with different Cu : Zn ratios (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 3.0). The causes of environmental pollution from the disposal of spent bleaching earth (SBE) from an edible oil refinery can be eliminated by using it as catalyst support after the regeneration process. The synthesized catalysts were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature-programmed reduction of hydrogen (TPR-H-2), pyridine-adsorbed Fourier transform infrared (FTIR-pyridine), temperature programmed desorption of carbon dioxide (TPD-CO2), N-2 physisorption, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis. The RWGS reaction was carried out in a slurry reactor at 200 degrees C, with a pressure of 3 MPa, a residence time of 4 h, and catalyst loading of 1.0 g with an H-2/CO2 ratio of 3. According to experimental data, the Cu/Zn ratio significantly impacts the catalytic structure and performance. The catalytic activity increased until the Cu : Zn ratio reached the maximum value of 1.5, while a further increase in Cu/Zn ratio inhibited the catalytic performance. The CZR3 catalyst (Cu/Zn ratio of 1.5) with a higher catalytic reducibility, high copper dispersion with small crystalline size, lower total pore volume as well as higher basicity showed superior catalytic performance in terms of CO2 conversion (40.67%) and CO yiel

Hypertension (HTN) is the leading cause of premature deaths worldwide and the main preventable risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, there is a current need for new therapeutics to manage this condition. In this regard, protein hydrolysates containing antihypertensive bioactive peptides are of increasing interest. Thus, agri-food industry byproducts have emerged as a valuable source to obtain these hydrolysates as they are rich in proteins and inexpensive. Among these, byproducts from animal origin stand out as they are abundantly generated worldwide. Hence, this review is focused on evaluating the potential role of chicken slaughterhouse byproducts as a source of peptides for managing HTN. Several of these byproducts such as blood, bones, skins, and especially, chicken feet have been used to obtain protein hydrolysates with angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE)-inhibitory activity and blood pressure-lowering effects. An increase in levels of endogenous antioxidant compounds, a reduction in ACE activity, and an improvement of HTN-associated endothelial dysfunction were the mechanisms underlying their effects. However, most of these studies were carried out in animal models, and further clinical studies are needed in order to confirm these antihypertensive properties. This would increase the value of these byproducts, contributing to the circular economy model of slaughterhouses.

In-situ pyrolysis-catalytic steam reforming reaction of polystyrene waste (PSW) liquefied in phenol can generate hydrogen from phenol and valuable liquid fuel from the PSW and thus has been studied recently. However, due to the complexity of phenol compounds and plastic waste, this reaction suffers from high energy consumption and coking. Herein, Ti, 4Ti3Cu and 3Ti3Cu nano-catalysts were facilitatively prepared using hydrothermal and impregnation methods and the physical and chemical properties of the fresh and used samples were deeply characterized. The experimental results show that almost complete phenol conversion with 97.90% H2 yield was achieved at 800 oC using 3Ti3Cu nano-catalyst. The catalytic pyrolysis products were ethylamine, tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) and benzene (1,1-dimethylethoxy) (BDE). The correspondence of the preparation, morphology and catalytic activity in this research elucidates the synthesis of anti-coking and stable nano-catalysts for in-situ pyrolysis-catalytic steam reforming reaction.

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an autosomal dominant disease that has a prevalence of approximately 1/250 inhabitants and is the most frequent cause of early coronary heart disease (CHD). We included 1.343.973 women and 1.210.671 men with at least one LDL-c measurement from the Catalan primary care database. We identified 14.699 subjects with Familial hypercholesterolemia-Phenotype (FH-P) based on LDL-c cut-off points by age (7.033 and 919 women, and 5.088 and 1659 men in primary and secondary prevention, respectively). Lipid lower therapy (LLT), medication possession ratio (MPR) as an indicator of adherence, and number of patients that reached their goal on lipid levels were compared by sex. In primary and secondary prevention, 69% and 54% of women (P = 0.001) and 64% and 51% of men (P = 0.001) were on low-to-moderate-potency LLT. Adherence to LLT was reduced in women older than 55 years, especially in secondary prevention (P = 0.03), where the percentage of women and men with LDL-c > 1.81 mmol/L were 99.9% and 98.9%, respectively (P = 0.001). Women with FH-P are less often treated with high-intensity LLT, less adherent to LLT, and have a lower probability of meeting their LDL-c goals than men, especially in secondary prevention.© 2023. There is a clear association between the molecular profile of colorectal cancer liver metastases (CRCLM) and the degree to which aggressive progression of the disease impacts patient survival. However, much of our knowledge of the molecular behaviour of colorectal cancer cells comes from experimental studies with, as yet, limited application in clinical practice. In this article, we review the current advances in the understanding of the molecular behaviour of CRCLM and present possible future therapeutic applications. This review focuses on three important steps in CRCLM development, progression and treatment: (1) the dissemination of malignant cells from primary tumours and the seeding to metastatic sites; (2) the response to modern regimens of chemotherapy; and (3) the possibility of predicting early progression and recurrence patterns by molecular analysis in liquid biopsy.

The autophagy gene ATG7 has been shown to be essential for the induction of autophagy, a process that used to be suppressed in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, the specific role of ATG7 in NAFLD remains unclear. The aim of this study was to analyze hepatic ATG7 mRNA and ATG7 protein expression regarding obesity-associated NAFLD. Patients included women classified into normal weight (NW, n = 6) and morbid obesity (MO, n = 72). The second group was subclassified into normal liver (NL, n = 11), simple steatosis (SS, n= 29), and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH, n = 32). mRNA expression was analyzed by RT–qPCR and protein expression was evaluated by Western blotting. Our results showed that NASH patients presented higher ATG7 mRNA and ATG7 protein levels. ATG7 mRNA expression was increased in NASH compared with SS, while ATG7 protein abundance was enhanced in NASH compared with NL. ATG7 mRNA correlated negatively with the expression of some hepatic lipid metabolism-related genes and positively with endocannabinoid receptors, adiponectin hepatic expression, and omentin levels. These results suggest that ATG7-mediated autophagy may play an important role in the pathogenesis of NAFLD, especially in NASH, perhaps playing a possible protective role. However, this is a preliminary study that needs to be further studied.

It is important to clarify the associations between modifiable lifestyle factors such as physical activity and breast cancer prognosis to enable the development of evidence-based survivorship recommendations. We performed a systematic review and meta-analyses to summarise the evidence on the relationship between postbreast cancer diagnosis physical activity and mortality, recurrence and second primary cancers. We searched PubMed and Embase through 31st October 2021 and included 20 observational studies and three follow-up observational analyses of patients enrolled in clinical trials. In linear dose-response meta-analysis of the observational studies, each 10-unit increase in metabolic equivalent of task (MET)-h/week higher recreational physical activity was associated with 15% and 14% lower risk of all-cause (95% confidence interval [CI]: 8%-22%, studies = 12, deaths = 3670) and breast cancer-specific mortality (95% CI: 4%-23%, studies = 11, deaths = 1632), respectively. Recreational physical activity was not associated with breast cancer recurrence (HR = 0.97, 95% CI: 0.91-1.05, studies = 6, deaths = 1705). Nonlinear dose-response meta-analyses indicated 48% lower all-cause and 38% lower breast cancer-specific mortality with increasing recreational physical activity up to 20 MET-h/week, but little further reduction in risk at higher levels. Predefined subgroup analyses across strata of body mass index, hormone receptors, adjustment for confounders, number of deaths, menopause and physical activity intensities were consistent in direction and magnitude to the main analyses. Previous evidence on postdiagnosis body fatness and mortality after breast cancer was graded as limited-suggestive. To evaluate the evidence on body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, waist-hip-ratio and weight change in relation to breast cancer prognosis, an updated systematic review was conducted. PubMed and Embase were searched for relevant studies published up to 31 October, 2021. Random-effects meta-analyses were conducted to estimate summary relative risks (RRs). The evidence was judged by an independent Expert Panel using pre-defined grading criteria. One randomized controlled trial and 225 observational studies were reviewed (220 publications). There was strong evidence (likelihood of causality: probable) that higher postdiagnosis BMI was associated with increased all-cause mortality (64 studies, 32 507 deaths), breast cancer-specific mortality (39 studies, 14 106 deaths) and second primary breast cancer (11 studies, 5248 events). The respective summary RRs and 95% confidence intervals per 5 kg/m(2) BMI were 1.07 (1.05-1.10), 1.10 (1.06-1.14) and 1.14 (1.04-1.26), with high between-study heterogeneity (I-2 = 56%, 60%, 66%), but generally consistent positive associations. Positive associations were also observed for waist circumference, waist-hip-ratio and all-cause and breast cancer-specific mortality. There was limited-suggestive evidence that postdiagnosis BMI was associated with higher risk of recurrence, nonbreast cancer deaths and cardiovascular deaths. The evidence for postdiagnosis (unexplained) weight or BMI change and all outcomes was graded as limited-no conclusion. Effective prevention and risk prediction are important for peripheral artery disease (PAD) due to its poor prognosis and the huge disease burden it produces. Circulating amino acids (AA) and their metabolites may serve as biomarkers of PAD risk, but they have been scarcely investigated. The objective was to prospectively analyze the associations of baseline levels of plasma AA (and their pathways) with subsequent risk of PAD and the potential effect modification by a nutritional intervention with the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet). A matched case-control study was nested in the PREDIMED trial, in which participants were randomized to three arms: MedDiet with tree nut supplementation group, MedDiet with extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) supplementation group or control group (low-fat diet). One hundred and sixty-seven PAD cases were matched with 250 controls. Plasma AA was measured with liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry at the Broad Institute. Baseline tryptophan, serine and threonine were inversely associated with PAD (ORfor 1 SD increase = 0.78 (0.61-0.99); 0.67 (0.51-0.86) and 0.75 (0.59-0.95), respectively) in a multivariable-adjusted conditional logistic regression model. The kynurenine/tryptophan ratio was directly associated with PAD (ORfor 1 SD increase = 1.50 (1.14-1.98)). The nutritional intervention with the MedDiet+nuts modified the association between threonine and PAD (p-value interaction = 0.018) compared with the control group. However, subjects allocated to the MedDiet+EVOO group were protected against PAD independently of baseline threonine. Dyslipidemia in gestational diabetes has been associated with worse perinatal outcomes. The ANGPTL3-4-8 axis regulates lipid metabolism, especially in the transition from fasting to feeding. In this study, we evaluated the response of ANGPTL3, 4, and 8 after the intake of a mixed meal in women with normal glucose tolerance and gestational diabetes, and we assessed their gene expressions in different placental locations. Regarding the circulating levels of ANGPTL3, 4, and 8, we observed an absence of ANGPTL4 response after the intake of the meal in the GDM group compared to its presence in the control group. At the placental level, we observed a glucose tolerance-dependent expression pattern of ANGPTL3 between the two placental sides. When we compared the GDM pregnancies with the control pregnancies, a downregulation of the maternal side ANGPTL3 expression was observed. This suggests a dysregulation of the ANGPTL3–4–8 axis in GDM, both at the circulating level after ingestion and at the level of placental expression. Furthermore, we discerned that the expressions of ANGPTL3, 4, and 8 were related to birth weight and placental weight in the GDM group, but not in the control group, which suggests that they may play a role in regulating the transplacental passage of nutrients.

Background: Dietary flavonoid intake is associated with a reduced risk of some cardiometabolic disorders, attributed in part to their claimed anti-inflammatory activity. Our aim was to investigate the potential association between specific urine flavonoid metabolites, liver enzymes, and inflammatory status in individuals with metabolic syndrome (MetS). Methods: In this cross-sectional study, clinical and dietary data from 267 participants, aged 55 to 75 years, participating in the PREDIMED Plus study (PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea) were analyzed. At the baseline, spot urine samples were collected and seven urinary flavonoid metabolites were quantified using ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-q-Q MS). Liver enzymes, inflammatory scores, and urinary flavonoid concentrations were inverse normally transformed. Results: Adjusted linear regression models showed an inverse association between urinary citrus flavanone concentrations and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) (all p-values <0.05). Naringenin 7'-GlcUA was significantly associated with a lower aggregate index of systemic inflammation (AISI) (Bper 1SD = -0.14; 95% CI: -0.27 to -0.02; p-value = 0.025) and systemic inflammation index (SII) (Bper 1SD = -0.14; 95% CI: -0.27 to -0.02; p-value = 0.028). To investigate the relationship between flavanone subclasses and GGT levels, we fitted a score of citrus-flavanones, and subjects were stratified into quartiles. The highest values of the citrus-flavanone score (per 1-SD increase) were associated with lower GGT levels (Bper 1SD = -0.41; 95% CI: -0.74 to -0.07), exhibiting a linear trend across quartiles (p-trend = 0.015). ScopeSome very-low density lipoprotein (VLDL) properties may render them more pro-atherogenic. We aimed to assess whether a Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) or an energy-reduced MedDiet with increased physical activity improves them. Methods and resultsIn a sample of the PREvencion con DIeta MEDiterranea (PREDIMED) study, a 1-year intervention with MedDiet with extra-virgin olive oil (n = 89) or nuts (MedDiet-Nuts; n = 79) is compared with a low-fat diet (n = 90). In the PREDIMED-Plus study, a 1-year intervention with energy-reduced MedDiet and physical activity (n = 103) is compared with an ad libitum MedDiet (n = 101). VLDL levels of apolipoprotein C-I, C-III, triglycerides, and cholesterol; the apolipoprotein E-/C-I ratio; and VLDL ex-vivo triglyceride transfer are measured. In PREDIMED participants in both MedDiet groups combined, VLDL apolipoprotein C-III levels are nominally reduced (-0.023 SD units, 95% CI -0.44 to -0.014, p = 0.037). VLDL triglyceride transfer is nominally increased in the MedDiet-Nuts group (+0.39 SD units, 95% CI 0.012-0.78, p = 0.045). In PREDIMED-Plus, no inter-group differences are detected. ConclusionsIn older adults at high cardiovascular risk, MedDiet is associated with lower VLDL atherogenicity versus a low-fat diet. No differences are seen after an energy-reduced MedDiet with physical activity.

BACKGROUND: It has been previously shown that acutely administered insect Alphitobius diaperinus protein increases food intake in rats and modifies the ex vivo enterohormone secretory profile differently than beef or almond proteins. In this study, we aimed to evaluate whether these effects could be maintained for a longer period and determine the underlying mechanisms. RESULTS: We administered two different insect species to rats for 26 days and measured food intake at different time points. Both insect species increased food intake in the first week, but the effect was later lost. Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and ghrelin were measured in plasma and ex vivo, and no chronic effects on their secretion or desensitization were found. Nevertheless, digested A. diaperinus acutely modified GLP-1 and ghrelin secretion ex vivo. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that increases in food intake could be explained by a local ghrelin reduction acting in the small intestine. © 2022 The Authors. Microwave-assisted deep eutectic solvent (DES) has received attention as an ultrafast pretreatment method in lignocellulose fractionation. This study investigated the improvement of milled softwood mixture (MSM) fractionation with chlorine chloride-formic acid (ChCl:FA) to obtain residues with high glucan retention and purity while removing majority of the lignin and hemicelluloses. At the optimum pretreatment conditions i.e., ChCl:FA (1:4), 140 °C, 14 min, 800 W and 15 % (w/v), 96.2 % hemicellulose removal, 90.1 % delignification and 93.5 % glucan retention were achieved. About 85 % lignin was recovered with a 95 % purity when solid loading was 10–20 % (w/v). This study showed that microwave assisted ChCl:FA pretreatment was a suitable means to fractionate MSM to achieve high quality glucan and lignin at high solid loading.

Branched fatty acid esters of hydroxy fatty acids are endogenous lipids reported to have antidiabetic and anti-inflammatory effects. Recently, we showed that 9-palmitic acid esters of hydroxypalmitic acid (9-PAHPA) and 9-oleic acid esters of hydroxypalmitic acid increased insulin sensitivity in mice when incorporated to a chow diet or to a high fat and high sucrose diet. However, preventive supplementation with 9-PAHPA and 9-oleic acid esters of hydroxy-palmitic acid in high fat and high sucrose diet mice did not impair significant weight gain or the development of hyperglycemia. The aim of this work was therefore to study whether in two animal models of obesity, namely the classical diet-induced obesity (DIO) and the db/db mice, 9-PAHPA may have ben-eficial effects against obesity and liver and skeletal muscle metabolic dysfunction. In DIO mice, we observed that 9-PAHPA increased body weight and fat mass. In line with this observation, we found that 9-PAHPA supplementation decreased energy expenditure. In liver and in skeletal muscle, mitochondrial activities and oxidative stress parameters were not modified by 9-PAHPA supplementation. In db/db mice, 9-PAHPA had no effect on the dramatic weight gain and hyperglycemia. In addition, 9-PAHPA supplementation did not correct either the hepatomegaly and hepatic steatosis or the severe muscle atrophy recorded compared with db/ + animals. Likewise, supplementation with 9-PAHPA did not impact the different metabolic parameters analyzed, either in the liver or in the skeletal muscles. Little is known about how diet might influence breast cancer prognosis. The current systematic reviews and meta-analyses summarise the evidence on postdiagnosis dietary factors and breast cancer outcomes from randomised controlled trials and longitudinal observational studies. PubMed and Embase were searched through 31st October 2021. Random-effects linear dose-response meta-analysis was conducted when at least three studies with sufficient information were available. The quality of the evidence was evaluated by an independent Expert Panel. We identified 108 publications. No meta-analysis was conducted for dietary patterns, vegetables, wholegrains, fish, meat, and supplements due to few studies, often with insufficient data. Meta-analysis was only possible for all-cause mortality with dairy, isoflavone, carbohydrate, dietary fibre, alcohol intake and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), and for breast cancer-specific mortality with fruit, dairy, carbohydrate, protein, dietary fat, fibre, alcohol intake and serum 25(OH)D. The results, with few exceptions, were generally null. We searched PubMed and Embase for randomised controlled trials and longitudinal observational studies from inception to 31 October 2021. We calculated summary relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using random-effects meta-analyses. Discoidin domain receptor 1 (DDR1) is a tyrosine kinase receptor expressed in epithelial cells from different tissues in which collagen binding activates pleiotropic functions. In the brain, DDR1 is mainly expressed in oligodendrocytes (OLs), the function of which is unclear. Whether collagen can activate DDR1 in OLs has not been studied. Here, we assessed the expression of DDR1 during in vitro OL differentiation, including collagen IV incubation, and the capability of collagen IV to induce DDR1 phosphorylation. Experiments were performed using two in vitro models of OL differentiation: OLs derived from adult rat neural stem cells (NSCs) and the HOG16 human oligodendroglial cell line. Immunocytofluorescence, western blotting, and ELISA were performed to analyze these questions. The differentiation of OLs from NSCs was addressed using oligodendrocyte transcription factor 2 (Olig2) and myelin basic protein (MBP). In HOG16 OLs, collagen IV induced DDR1 phosphorylation through slow and sustained kinetics. In NSC-derived OLs, DDR1 was found in a high proportion of differentiating cells (MBP+/Olig2+), but its protein expression was decreased in later stages. The addition of collagen IV did not change the number of DDR1+/MBP+ cells but did accelerate OL branching. Here, we provide the first demonstration that collagen IV mediates the phosphorylation of DDR1 in HOG16 cells and that the in vitro co-expression of DDR1 and MBP is associated with accelerated branching during the differentiation of primary OLs.

Background and aims: Both Nordic and Mediterranean diets are considered healthy despite notable regional differences. Although these dietary patterns may lower cardiovascular risk, it is unclear if they improve the lipoprotein phenotype in children with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH). The aim is to determine the impact of Nordic and Mediterranean diets on the advanced lipoprotein profile in children with heterozygous FH (HeFH). Methods: This was a cross-sectional study performed in children with FH recruited from the Lipid Clinics at Sant Joan University Hospital in Reus (Spain) and Oslo University Hospital (Norway). Two-hundred fifty-six children (mean age 10 y/o; 48% girls): 85 Spanish and 29 Norwegian FH children, and 142 non-FH healthy controls (119 from Spain and 23 from Norway) were included in the study. A pathogenic FH-associated genetic variant was present in 81% of Spanish children with FH and all Norwegian children with FH. An 1H NMR based advanced lipoprotein test (Nightingale®) providing information on the particle number, size and lipid composition of 14 lipoprotein subclasses was performed and correlated to the dietary components. Results: Levels of LDL-C, HDL-C and triglycerides were not significantly different between the Nordic and Mediterranean FH groups. Spanish children with FH had more LDL particles, mainly of the large and medium LDL subclasses, than Norwegian FH children. Spanish FH children also had more HDL particles, mainly medium and small, than Norwegian FH children. Background: Recent evidence suggest that energy distribution during the daytimecould be a potential determinant for the development of metabolic syndrome (MetS). Objective: To cross-sectionally assess the association between breakfast size and the prevalence of MetS in Spanish adults. Methods: Our study included a subset of 3644 participants from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition Spain study recontacted between 2017-2018. Information on diet, sociodemographic, lifestyle, sleep quality, and chronotype was collected using standardized questionnaires, while anthropometric and blood pressure data were measured in a face-to-face personal interview by a nurse. MetS was defined according to the Adult Treatment Panel III (ATPIII) definition by measuring serum levels of total cholesterol, tryglycerides and glucose. Breakfast size was calculated as: (energy from breakfast/total energy intake) * 2000 kcal. To evaluate the association between breakfast size and MetS prevalence, a multivariable logistic regression model adjusted by potential confounders was used to estimate OR and 95% CI. Results: Prevalence of MetS in our study was 40.7%. The mean breakfast size was 306.6 * 2000 kcal (15% of the total daily energy intake), with 14 (0.4%) participants skipping breakfast. Participants in the highest quartile of breakfast size had a lower MetS prevalence compared to participants in the lowest quartile (ORQ4vsQ1 = 0.62; 95% CI = 0.51-0.76; p-trend < 0.001). No modification of the estimated ORs by sex, breakfast time, and number of eating occasions per day were observed.
