Reading quantum information of single photons is commonly realized by quantum tomography or the direct (weak) measurement approach. However, these methods are time-consuming and face enormous challenges in characterizing single photons from an ultrafast light source due to the stringent temporal mode matching requirements. Here, we retrieve the spatial wavefunction of indistinguishable single photons from both a continuous wave source and a femtosecond light source using a self-referencing interferometer. Our method only requires nine ensemble-averaged measurements. This technique simplifies the measurement procedure of single-photon wavefunction and automatically mode matches each self-interfering single photon temporally, which enables the measurement of the spatial wavefunction of single photons from an ultrafast light source.

Abstract Thaumatin-like protein (TLP) is present as a large family in plants, and individual members play different roles in various responses to biotic and abiotic stresses. Here we studied the role of 33 putative grape (Vitis vinifera L.) TLP genes (VvTLP) in grape disease resistance. Heat maps analysis compared the expression profiles of 33 genes in disease resistant and susceptible grape species infected with anthracnose (Elsinoe ampelina), powdery mildew (Erysiphe necator) or Botrytis cinerea. Among these 33 genes, the expression level of TLP29 increased following the three pathogens inoculations, and its homolog from the disease resistant Chinese wild grape V. quinquangularis cv. ‘Shang-24’, was focused for functional studies. Over-expression of TLP29 from grape ‘Shang-24’ (VqTLP29) in Arabidopsis thaliana enhanced its resistance to powdery mildew and the bacterium Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000, but decreased resistance to B. cinerea. Moreover, the stomatal closure immunity response to pathogen associated molecular patterns was strengthened in the transgenic lines. A comparison of the expression profiles of various resistance-related genes after infection with different pathogens indicated that VqTLP29 may be involved in the salicylic acid and jasmonic acid/ethylene signaling pathways.

Abstract In this work, we study strong-field molecular alignment in, for the first time, degenerated channels following the same charged states of molecules. By measuring the angular distribution of dissociation fragments from two degenerated N+ + N+ channels of N2, we observe an opposite angular distribution development in these two channels, one expanding and one contracting, when the laser intensity increases. Our further study shows that the expanding channel comes from a nonsequential transition, while the contracting channel involves a sequential transition. We also study the time sequence of the sequential and nonsequential transitions and find that the opposite angular distribution development is due to the different degrees of molecular alignment in these two degenerated channels.

Abstract Basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) proteins, which are characterized by a conserved bHLH domain, comprise one of the largest families of transcription factors in both plants and animals, and have been shown to have a wide range of biological functions. However, there have been very few studies of bHLH proteins from perennial tree species. We describe here the identification and characterization of 175 bHLH transcription factors from apple (Malus × domestica). Phylogenetic analysis of apple bHLH (MdbHLH) genes and their Arabidopsis thaliana (Arabidopsis) orthologs indicated that they can be classified into 23 subgroups. Moreover, integrated synteny analysis suggested that the large-scale expansion of the bHLH transcription factor family occurred before the divergence of apple and Arabidopsis. An analysis of the exon/intron structure and protein domains was conducted to suggest their functional roles. Finally, we observed that MdbHLH subgroup III and IV genes displayed diverse expression profiles in various organs, as well as in response to abiotic stresses and various hormone treatments. Taken together, these data provide new information regarding the composition and diversity of the apple bHLH transcription factor family that will provide a platform for future targeted functional characterization.

Despite recent progresses in the field of microfluidics, the effect of liquid pressure on the detection accuracy has been rarely studied. Here, we perform a quantitative analysis of such effect, by utilizing the sensitive optical responses of graphene to the refractive index (RI) change of its surrounding environment. We utilize a reflection coupling configuration by combining the total internal reflection (TIR) and ultrasonic waves. The high-performance graphene is processed on common glasses by using the solution-processable oxidation-reduction method. We find that the RI change of water caused by a pressure as small as 500 Pa generated by the liquid level change in the microfluidics can be measured directly. The detection accuracy and response time limits are approximately 280 Pa and 100 ns, respectively. The Maxwell's boundary conditions, Fresnel's law, and Pascal's law are used in theoretical analyses. This work highlights the importance of liquid pressure in microfluidics and provides guidance in designing and accurate detection of microfluidic devices.

The existence of large nonlinear optical coefficients is one of the preconditions for using nonlinear optical materials in nonlinear optical devices. For a crystal, such large coefficients can be achieved by matching photon energies with resonant energies between different bands, and so the details of the crystal band structure play an important role. Here we demonstrate that large third-order nonlinearities can also be generally obtained by a different strategy. As any of the incident frequencies or the sum of any two or three frequencies approaches zero, the doped or excited populations of electronic states lead to divergent contributions in the induced current density. We refer to these as intraband divergences, by analogy with the behavior of Drude conductivity in linear response. Physically, such resonant processes can be associated with a combination of intraband and interband optical transitions. Current-induced second order nonlinearity, coherent current injection, and jerk currents are all related to such divergences, and we find similar divergences in degenerate four wave mixing and cross-phase modulation under certain conditions. These divergences are limited by intraband relaxation parameters and lead to a large optical response from a high quality sample; we find that they are very robust with respect to variations in the details of the band structure. To clearly track all of these effects, we analyze gapped graphene, describing the electrons as massive Dirac fermions; under the relaxation time approximation, we derive analytic expressions for the third order conductivities and identify the divergences that arise in describing the associated nonlinear phenomena.

We study high-order harmonics generation from plasmas generated from graphite, fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, carbon nanofibers, diamond nanoparticles, and graphene. Our approach utilizes a heating nanosecond laser pulse to produce plasmas that serve as the media for high harmonic generation from a subsequent driven femtosecond laser pulse. High harmonics are generated at different time delays following the plasma formation, which allows us to analyze the spreading of species with different masses. We analyze the harmonic yields from species of single carbon atom, 60 atoms (fullerene), 106 atoms (diamond nanoparticles), 109 atoms (CNTs and CNFs), and even much larger species of graphene sheets. The harmonic yields are analyzed in the range of 100 ns–1 ms delays. The harmonic yields were significantly higher within the 200 ns–0.5 µs range, but no harmonic is observed between 10 µs–1 ms. Our observations show that, at the optimal ablation of atoms and clusters, the laser-induced plasmas produced on the surfaces of different carbon-contained species spread out from targets with the comparable velocities.

Unambiguous determination of the electric field of arbitrary ultrashort pulses is the key for time and frequency standards, attosecond science, and precision spectroscopy. However, a single-step technique that can simultaneously and directly characterize the spectrum, spectral phase, and the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) information of an arbitrary ultrashort pulse remains elusive. This technological roadblock hinders the current field from studying non-repeating single-shot events, since ultrashort laser pulses are often unstable. Here, we introduce a single-step reference-free technique through polarization interfering electric field with phase inverted electric field (PIE-PIE) to directly measure arbitrary ultrashort pulses in single-shot operation without using any retrieval algorithm. PIE-PIE utilizes highly efficient spectral phase conjugation based on four-wave-mixing. The ability to fully determine the spectrum, spectral phase, and CEP of relatively low intensity single-shot pulses will revolutionize ultrafast sciences and enable studies of arbitrary non-repeating ultrafast events.

Resonance-enhanced harmonics from laser-produced plasma plumes are an interesting phenomenon, whose underlying mechanism is still under debate. In particular, it is unclear whether the macroscopic dispersion properties of the plasma are the key factors for the formation of the enhancement. To shed light on this problem, we perform experiments with two-component plasmas, in which one of the components (tin) is known to be able to generate enhanced harmonics and the other component (lead) is known for altering the overall dispersion properties of the plasma medium. We compare the harmonics spectra from the plasma of pure tin and the plasma of tin/lead alloy. Depending on the driving wavelength, we observe enhanced harmonics at around 47 or 44 nm in both types of plasmas. The two enhanced regions could be attributed to resonances in singly-charged and doubly-charged tin ions, respectively. Our results indicate that the co-existence of lead plasma does not destroy the presence of the enhanced harmonics of tin plasma, and it seems to suggest that the macroscopic properties of the plasma are not the origin of the resonance-enhanced harmonics in tin.

Understanding of laser-material interactions is a scientific evergreen in the fundamental research of physics and optics. We report here that the ultrafast dynamics of the Cu(110) crystal surface is permanently captured by the formation of subwavelength periodic structures using two collinear femtosecond laser irradiations with different linear polarizations. Surprisingly, such periodic structures are found to have slantwise orientation that is anomalously change as a function of the time delay between two laser beams. In the case of the shorter time delays, the time-dependent slantwise orientations oscillated with terahertz frequency, depending on the pulse width and the intersection angle of two polarization directions, whereas it only presents monotonic change for the larger time delays. Analyses suggests that the former case is attributed to the surface plasmon excitation of the temporally delayed femtosecond laser irradiation on the transient state of the metal surface, which is consequently modulated by some nonthermal effects such as shock wave and bond hardening, while the latter situation is predominated by thermal relaxation of the material lattice. The simulation results agree with the experimental measurements. This investigation not only allows us to sensitively record the transient spatiotemporal evolution on superheated metal surfaces, but also provides insights for the control of material microprocessing.

The development of efficient electrocatalyst to produce molecular hydrogen from water is receiving considerable attention, in an effort to decrease our reliance on fossil fuels. The prevention of the aggregation of active sites during material synthesis, in order to increase charge transport properties of electrocatalysts, is needed. We have designed, synthesized, and studied a Ag2S/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) electrochemical catalyst (for hydrogen evolution) from water. The Ag2S nanocrystals were synthesized by the solvothermal method in which the rGO was added. The addition of the rGO resulted in the formation of smaller Ag2S nanocrystals, which consequently increased the electrical conductivity of the composite catalyst. The composite catalyst showed a higher electrochemical catalytic activity than the one with an absence of rGO. At a current density of 10 mA/cm2, a low overpotential of 120 mV was obtained. A Tafel slope of 49.1 mV/dec suggests a Volmer–Herovsky mechanism for the composite catalyst. These results may provide a novel strategy for developing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts, via the combining of a nano-semiconductor catalyst with a 2D material.

Gold nanoparticles (NPs) have a wide range of applications in various fields. Here, we present high-order nonlinear optical studies of the plasmas produced from ablation of Au bulk targets and Au NP films deposited on paper and glass substrates. Experimentally, we analyze high-order harmonic generation (HHG) from gold NPs-containing plasmas. The HHG is produced by 35-fs pulses at 800 and 400 nm, while the plasmas are produced by femtosecond (35 fs, 800 nm), picosecond (200 ps, 800 nm), and nanosecond (5 ns, 1064 nm) pulses, respectively. High-order harmonics produced from ablated Au NPs on paper were 40 times stronger than the HHG from that ablated from the Au bulk targets. Through molecular dynamic simulations, we investigate the formation of gold NPs during laser ablation of a metal surface under different conditions.

WRKY transcription factors are known to play important roles in plant responses to various abiotic and biotic stresses. The grape WRKY gene, WRKY3 was previously reported to respond to salt and drought stress, as well as methyl jasmonate and ethylene treatments in Vitis labrusca × V. vinifera cv. ‘Kyoho.’ In the current study, WRKY3 from the ‘Kyoho’ grape cultivar was constitutively expressed in Arabidopsis thaliana under control of the cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoter. The 35S::VlWRKY3 transgenic A. thaliana plants showed improved salt and drought stress tolerance during the germination, seedling and the mature plant stages. Various physiological traits related to abiotic stress responses were evaluated to gain further insight into the role of VlWRKY3, and it was found that abiotic stress caused less damage to the transgenic seedlings than to the wild-type (WT) plants. VlWRKY3 over-expression also resulted in altered expression levels of abiotic stress-responsive genes. Moreover, the 35S::VlWRKY3 transgenic A. thaliana lines showed improved resistance to Golovinomyces cichoracearum, but increased susceptibility to Botrytis cinerea, compared with the WT plants. Collectively, these results indicate that VlWRKY3 plays important roles in responses to both abiotic and biotic stress, and modification of its expression may represent a strategy to enhance stress tolerance in crops.

We analyzed the formation of the aluminum (Al) nanoparticles (NPs) with triangular shape obtained by ablating Al bulk in liquid using pulses with different durations (5 ns, 200 ps, and 30 fs) and wavelengths (355 nm, 800 nm, and 1064 nm). We report three stages of synthesis and aging of Al NPs: Formation, transformation, and stable stage. The NPs prepared by different pulses are almost identical at the initial stage. The effects of duration and wavelength of the ablation pulses on the aging of NPs are revealed. Pulse duration is determined to be essential for morphological transformation of NPs, while pulse wavelength strongly influences particle sizes. NPs produced by ultra-short pulses have smaller sizes and narrow size distribution. We demonstrate that oxidation and hydrolysis of Al in water are the results of ablation for all pulse durations and wavelengths, which also strongly modify the preferable reaction path of NPs in water, thus affecting the composition and morphology of triangle NPs. The results of modeling of the NPs generation in water due to a 50 ps laser pulse interacting with a thick Al target are presented. Water-based effects in the formation of NPs, their evolution, and solidification are considered from the mechanical and thermophysical points of view. The detailed analysis of the modeling results allowed for determination of the main mechanism responsible for the ablation process followed by the NPs formation.

Overcoming the disadvantages of low transmission and broad peak bandwidth of previously reported plasmonic color filters, a high-efficiency multispectral plasmonic color filter is theoretically proposed with two cascaded ultrathin metallic nanogratings separated by two heterogeneous dielectric layers, and its optical properties are theoretically investigated using the finite-difference time-domain method. The transmission spectrum presents three near-unity peak bands accompanied with three near-null dip bands adjacent around them. Both transmission efficiencies of above 90% and ultranarrow peak bandwidth of 20 nm are achieved in the visible regime. The peak band positions can be flexibly tailored by varying the structural parameters. The filter selects the visible color with high signal noise ratio at the peak bands. The outstanding spectral properties of this filter indicate significant improvement for the high-accuracy color filtering and multispectral imaging applications. The simulated near-field electromagnetic distributions suggest that the excitation of the hybrid antisymmetric surface plasmon polariton (SPP) leaky mode and metal-insulator-metal waveguide modes are responsible for the peak transmission bands, while the formation of the hybrid SPP bound modes confined on the bottom nanograting makes the dip transmission bands, all of which are the consequence of the plasmonic hybridization between the two neighboring metallic nanogratings.

The application of nanoparticles (NPs) and quasi-phase matching (QPM) each play an important role in the enhancement of high-order harmonics (HHG) of ultrashort laser pulses. We analyze various regimes of nanoparticle plasma formation for the creation conditions for maximal QPM-induced enhancement of the groups of harmonics in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV). Laser plasmas were formed on the surfaces of NPs- and microparticle (MPs)-contained targets using ablation by nanosecond, picosecond, and femtosecond pulses. Different conditions of laser plasma formation (extended and perforated plasma) and variable concentrations of free electrons in these three cases of laser ablation led to modifications of QPM conditions. We demonstrate novel approaches in the optimization of QPM at the conditions of laser ablation of NPs and MPs by pulses of different durations. The formation of QPM conditions using femtosecond and picosecond heating pulses during HHG in such plasmas allowed the growth of conversion efficiency of the groups of harmonics, with the enhancement factors exceeding 25× in different ranges of XUV, contrary to less efficient QPM in the case of nanosecond pulse-induced ablation.

Gold films are widely used for different applications. We present the results of third- and high-order nonlinear optical studies of the thin films fabricated from Au nanoparticle solutions by spin-coating methods. These nanoparticles were synthesized by laser ablation of bulk gold in pure water using 200 ps, 800 nm pulses. The highest values of the nonlinear absorption coefficient (9 × 10−6 cm W−1), nonlinear refractive index (3 × 10−11 cm2 W−1), and saturation intensity (1.3 × 1010 W cm−2) were achieved using 35 fs, 400 nm pulses. We also determined the relaxation time constants for transient absorption (220 fs and 1.6 ps) at 400 nm. The high-order harmonic generation was studied during propagation of 35 fs, 800 nm pulses through the plasma during the ablation of gold nanoparticle film and bulk gold. The highest harmonic cutoff (29th order) was observed in the plasma containing gold nanoparticles.

Superhydrophobic surfaces rely on a large number of surface micro/nano structures to increase the roughness of a material. Producing such structures is possible through a multitude of relatively slow methods; however, economic and large scale production of superhydrophobic surfaces require using a fast process on a cheap substrate. Here, we used femtosecond laser processing to fabricate micro and nanostructures on tungsten carbide that we use as a mold to thermally imprint polypropylene sheets. The fabricated tungsten carbide mold was used to imprint more than twenty superhydrophobic polypropylene sheets before mold contamination reduces the surface contact angle below 150°. Using Toluene solution, the mold is subsequently capable of being cleaned of contamination from polypropylene residue and reused for further imprinting. Ninety thermoplastic imprints were conducted using a single tungsten carbide mold with only minimal structural degradation apparent on the micro/nano structured surface.

Plant respiratory burst oxidase homolog (rboh) genes appear to play crucial roles in plant development, defense reactions and hormone signaling. In this study, a total of seven rboh genes from grape were identified and characterized. Genomic structure and predicted protein sequence analysis indicated that the sequences of plant rboh genes are highly conserved. Synteny analysis demonstrated that several Vvrboh genes were found in corresponding syntenic blocks of Arabidopsis, suggesting that these genes arose before the divergence of the respective lineages. The expression pattern of Vvrboh genes in different tissues was assessed by qRT-PCR and two were constitutively expressed in all tissues tested. The expression profiles were similarly analyzed following exposure to various stresses and hormone treatments. It was shown that the expression levels of VvrbohA, VvrbohB and VvrbohC1 were significantly increased by salt and drought treatments. VvrbohB, VvrbohC2, and VvrbohD exhibited a dramatic up-regulation after powdery mildew (Uncinula necator (Schw.) Burr.) inoculation, while VvrbohH was down-regulated. Finally, salicylic acid treatment strongly stimulated the expression of VvrbohD and VvrbohH, while abscisic acid treatment induced the expression of VvrbohB and VvrbohH. These results demonstrate that the expression patterns of grape rboh genes exhibit diverse and complex stress-response expression signatures.

We present a mask-free strategy for fabricating two-dimensional subwavelength periodic triangular arrays on tungsten, by focusing two orthogonally polarized and temporally delayed femtosecond laser beams using a cylindrical lens. In stark contrast to the commonly observed structures of either a single ablation spot or a one-dimensional grating, we obtained highly uniform periodic triangular arrays on the laser-exposed surface, with three equilateral sides each of 480 nm in length and about 100 nm in modulation depth. The triangular features varied with both the laser energy and the scanning speed. We found that the optical reflectivity of such a surface reduces significantly within the spectral range of 700⁻2500 nm. The triangular structure morphology can also be controlled by varying the time delay between the two laser beams.

We report on the formation of slantwise-oriented periodic subwavelength ripple structures on chromium surfaces irradiated by single-beam femtosecond laser pulses at normal incidence. Unexpectedly, the ripples slanted in opposite directions on each side the laser-scanned area, neither perpendicular nor parallel to the laser polarization. The modulation depth was also found to change from one ripple to the next ripple. A theoretical model is provided to explain our observations, and excellent agreement is shown between the simulations and the experimental results. Moreover, the validity of our theory is also confirmed on bulk chromium surfaces. Our study provides insights for better understanding and control of femtosecond laser nanostructuring.

We investigated the optical third harmonic generation (THG) signal from nanostructure-covered microcubes on Ni. We found that the hierarchical structures greatly change the third-order optical nonlinearity of the metallic surface. While the symmetry and lightning rod (LR) effects on microstructures did not significantly influence the THG, the localized surface plasmon (LSP) effect on the nanostructures enhanced it. By removing the nanostructures on the hierarchical structures, THG intensity could be strongly suppressed. In the present paper, we also discuss the mechanism that enhances THG in nano/micro structures.

Ethylene response factor (ERF) transcription factors play important roles in regulating immune responses in plants. In our study, we characterized a member of the ERF transcription factor family, VaERF20, from the Chinese wild Vitis genotype, V. amurensis Rupr “Shuangyou”. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that VaERF20 belongs to group IXc of the ERF family, in which many members are known to contribute to fighting pathogen infection. Consistent with this, expression of VaERF20 was induced by treatment with the necrotrophic fungal pathogen Botrytis cinerea (B. cinerea) in “Shuangyou” and V. vinifera “Red Globe”. Arabidopsis thaliana plants over-expressing VaERF20 displayed enhanced resistance to B. cinerea and the bacterium Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato (Pst) DC3000. Patterns of pathogen-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation were entirely distinct in B. cinerea and PstDC3000 inoculated plants. Examples of both salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid/ethylene (JA/ET) responsive defense genes were up-regulated after B. cinerea and PstDC3000 inoculation of the VaERF20-overexpressing transgenic A. thaliana plants. Evidence of pattern-triggered immunity (PTI), callose accumulation and stomatal defense, together with increased expression of PTI genes, was also greater in the transgenic lines. These data indicate that VaERF20 participates in various signal transduction pathways and acts as an inducer of immune responses.

Using high-intensity femtosecond laser pulses for surface structuring, technologically important metallic light absorbers (dark Au, W, and Ti alloy) with absorption of about 85–95% over a broad wavelength range from ultraviolet to infrared were produced. It was found that the enhanced absorption of the dark metals is caused by a rich variety of nano-/microscale surface structures. The dark metals produced in this study may find a variety of applications in the fields of renewable energy and energy efficiency, such as thermophotovoltaics, solar energy absorbers, thermal radiation sources, and radiative heat transfer devices.

Ratiometric near-infrared fluorescent pH probes with various pKa values were innovatively designed and synthesized based on cyanine with a diamine moiety. The photochemical properties of these probes were thoroughly evaluated. Among the series, IR-PHA exhibited an optimal pKa value of approximately 6.40, closely matching the pH of cancerous tissues. This feature is particularly valuable for real-time pH monitoring in both living cells and living mice. Moreover, when administered intravenously to tumor-bearing mice, IR-PHA demonstrated rapid and significant enhancement of near-infrared fluorescence and photoacoustic signals within the tumor region. This outcome underscores the probe's exceptional capability for dual-modal cancer imaging utilizing near-infrared fluorescence (NIRF) and photoacoustic (PA) modalities. Concurrently, the application of a continuous-wave near-infrared laser efficiently ablated cancer cells in vivo, attributed to the photothermal effect induced by IR-PHA. The results strongly indicate that IR-PHA is well-suited for NIRF/PA dualmodality imaging and photothermal therapy of tumors. This makes it a promising candidate for theranostic applications involving small molecules. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
