Abstract: The decay rate of the neutral K meson $\mathrm{K_{L} \rightarrow e^{+}e^{-}\gamma}$ has been measured with the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS. A total of 6864 events has been observed with an estimated background of 10 events. The branching ratio is $\mathrm{\Gamma(K_{L} \rightarrow e^{+}e^{-}\gamma)/\Gamma(K_{L} rightarrow all) = (1.06 \pm 0.02_{stat.} \pm 0.02_{sys.} \pm 0.04_{calc.})\times 10^{-5}}$. The parameter describing the relative strength of the two contributing amplitudes to this decay through $\mathrm{\alpha_{K^{*}}}$ intermediate seudoscalar or vector mesons, was measured to be $\mathrm{\alpha_{K^{*}} = -0.36 \pm 0.06_{stat.} \pm 0.02_{sys.}}$

Abstract: We present the results for a direct search for light gluinos through the appearance of $\eta\rightarrow 3\pin$ with high transverse momentum in the vacuum tank of the NA48 experiment at CERN. We find one event within a lifetime range of $10^{-9}-10^{-3}$\,s and another one between $10^{-10}-10^{-9}$\,s. Both events are consistent with the expected background from neutrons in the beam, produced by 450 GeV protons impinging on the Be targets, which interact with the residual air in the tank. From these data we give limits on the production of the hypothetical $g\widetilde{g}$ bound state, the $R^0$ hadron, and its $R^0\rightarrow\eta\photino$ decay in the $R^0$ mass range between 1 and 5~GeV.

Abstract: The rate of the decay of the neutral K meson into KL0 → μμγ has been measured with the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS. A total of 59 events has been observed with an estimated background of 14 events. The overall Kaon flux was determined to be 1.2 × 109. This observation corresponds to a branching ratio of (3.4 ± 0.6stat ± 0.4sys) × 10-7. Using this branching ratio the parameter αK* describing the relative strength of the two contributing amplitudes to this decay, through intermediate pseudoscalar or vector-like mesons, was measured to be αK*= -0.04-0.21+0.24. © Springer-Verlag 1997.

Abstract: In a preliminary version of the NA48 experiment at the CERN SPS, in which an iron- scintillator sandwich calorimeter was used as a photon detector, the ratio of K$_L \to \pi\mu\nu\gamma$ and K$_L \to \pi\mu\nu$ decays was measured. The branching ratio BR(K$_L \to \pi\mu\nu\gamma, \mbox{E}_\gamma^*\ge30~\mbox{MeV}$)/(K$_L \to \pi\mu\nu$) is found to be $(2.08\pm0.17$ $^{+0.16}_{-0.21})\times10^{-3}$, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. The result is in agreement with theoretical predictions.

Abstract: A broad R&D programme is proposed to study and improve the performance of LAr calorimetry required to meet LHC specifications. Novel readout structures with high granularity and very short cable connections will permit to achieve a high readout speed and minimal dead space. Design, simulations and substantial prototype studies are proposed in order to investigate physics and engineering aspects of a LAr calorimeter for LHC. It is planned to develop fast and radiation resistant LAr electronics, both based on Si JFET and GaAs technologies.

Abstract: Results on the production cross sections ofW andZ bosons detected in the UA2 experiment are given based on a large sample ofW→eν andZ→e+e− decays. The measured cross sections are σWe = 660±15(stat)±37(syst)pb, σZe = 70.4±5.5(stat)±4.0(syst)pb and their ratioR=9.38−0.72+0.82(stat)±0.25(syst). In the framework of the Standard Model, the measured value ofR is used to determine the total width of theW, Γ(W)=2.30±0.19(stat)±0.06(syst) GeV.

Abstract: The UA2 experiment, running at the CERN SPS Collider, has performed a study of events containing three hard jets in the final state. The angular distributions of the three jets show evidence for gluon bremsstrahlung, in good agreement with a QCD model to leading order in the strong coupling constant αs. The yield of three-jet events relative to that of two-jet events provides a measure of the strong coupling constant: ;3K3/K2=0.23±0.01±0.04, whereK2 andK3 represent the contributions arising from higher order corrections in α3 to the two- and three-jet exclusive cross-sections. A detailed discussion of the systematic and theoretical uncertainties is given.

Abstract: We analyze the energy density distribution in harronic final states as a function of their total transverse energy measured in the segmented central calorimeter of the UA2 detector. The energy dependence of collective shape variables is investigated. The data, collected at the CERN p Collider at GeV, exhibit strong variations in all these variables over the transverse energy range between 15 and 210 GeV, corresponding to substantial modifications in the structure of multihadronic final states. The evolution of the energy density distribution and of the collective shape variables shows a clear transition between two extreme dynamical regimes, respectively dominated bypT-limited phase space and by collimated two-jet configurations. A study of the relative populations of two-and three-jet systems reveals two different sources of configurations having three distinct lobes in the pattern of the energy-flow. A first component, steeply falling with energy, receives substantial contributions from soft parton collisions at lower transverse energies. Above 60 GeV a new hard component emerges, characterized by an approximately constant rate with respect to the dominant two-jet structures.

Abstract: A study of the two-jet mass spectrum measured with the UA 2 calorimeter has revealed a signal from hadronic decays ofW andZ bosons above a large background. Production and decay properties of the signal have been measured. The combined production cross-section σ·B(W, Z → two jets) is 9.6±2.3 (stat.)±1.1 (syst.) nb, compared with an expectation of 5.8 nb calculated to order αs2. A limit on the production cross-section of additional heavy vector bosons decaying into two jets is given as a function of the boson mass.

Abstract: The ratio of branching fractions of theW decaying to τ ande leptons is measured using collisions at GeV. The ratio of the electroweak charged current couplings to theW is then determined to begτW/geW=0.997±0.056 (stat.)±0.042 (syst.). Abstract: The production and properties of high transverse momentum hadron jets have been measured in the UA2 experiment at the CERN Collider using a highly segmented total absorption calorimeter. The characteristics of a sample of two-jet events with invariant mass up to 200 GeV/c2 are discussed, including measurements of their fragmentation properties, angular and rapidity distributions, and the properties of the additional energy clusters accompanying the two-jet system. Cross sections for inclusive jet production in the jet transverse momentum range between 30 and 100 GeV/c and for the two-jet invariant mass distribution in the mass range from 60–200 GeV/c2 are reported.

Abstract: The production of electrons with very high transverse momentum has been studied in the UA2 experiment at the CERN collider ( =540 GeV). From a sample of events containing an electron candidate withpT>15 GeV/c, we extract a clear signal resulting from the production of the charged intermediate vector bosonW±, which subsequently decays into an electron and a neutrino. We study theW production and decay properties. Further-more, we refine our results on the production and decay of the neutral vector bosonZ0. Finally, we compare the experimental results to the predictions of the standard model of the unified electro-weak theory.

Abstract: The UA2 experiment, running at the CERN SPS {Mathematical expression} Collider, has performed a study of events containing three hard jets in the final state. The angular distributions of the three jets show evidence for gluon bremsstrahlung, in good agreement with a QCD model to leading order in the strong coupling constant αs. The yield of three-jet events relative to that of two-jet events provides a measure of the strong coupling constant: ;3K3/K2=0.23±0.01±0.04, where K2 and K3 represent the contributions arising from higher order corrections in α3 to the two- and three-jet exclusive cross-sections. A detailed discussion of the systematic and theoretical uncertainties is given. © 1986 Springer-Verlag.
