Superconducting single crystals of SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$ without fluorine doping were grown at a pressure of 3.3 GPa and a temperature of 1350-1450 $^\circ$C by using the self-flux method. Plate-like single crystals of a few-150 $\mu$m in their lateral size were obtained. Single crystals showed the superconducting transition at about 53.5 K with a narrow transition width of 0.5 K. The synchrotron-irradiated x-ray diffractometry patterns and high-angle-annular-dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy images point to the high quality of the crystals with a well-defined layered tetragonal structure. We present the first wide range (2 meV$-$5.5 eV) optical conductivity of EuB$_6$ from reflectivity and ellipsometry measurements. Upon the ferromagnetic transition at T$_{c}$=15.5 K, interband transition $\sigma_{1}(\omega)$ decreases at three different energy $\omega$=0.5, 1.4, 2.75 eV and the lost spectral weight is transferred to the Drude $\sigma_{1}(\omega)$ at $\omega<$0.33 eV. We succeeded in explaining this unprecedented multiple-energy $\sigma_{1}(\omega)$ change using LDA+U calculated band structure by Kunes and Pickett (Phys. Rev. B, $\textbf{69}$,165111). Our finding supports strongly that (1) EuB$_6$ is a semimetal and (2) the exchange-driven band splitting is the primary source of the drastic $\rho(T)$ and $\omega_{p}^{2}$ changes at T $<$ T$_{c}$., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

The ${}^{11}$B NMR spectra in polycrystalline MgB$_2$ were measured for several magnetic fields (1.97 T and 3.15 T) as a function of temperature from 5 K to 40 K. The composite spectra in the superconducting state can be understood in terms of anisotropy of the upper critical field, $\gamma_{H}$, which is determined to be 5.4 at low temperature. Using Brandt's algorithm\cite{Brandt} the full spectrum, including satellites, was simulated for the temperature 8 K and a magnetic field of 1.97 T. The penetration depth $\lambda$ was determined to be $1,152\pm50$ {\AA}, and the anisotropy of the penetration depth, $\gamma_{\lambda}$, was estimated to be close to one at low temperature. Therefore, our findings establish that there are two different anisotropies for upper critical field and penetration depth at low temperatures., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

The optical conductivity $\sigma_{1}(\omega)$ of Eu$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$B$_{6}$ has been obtained from reflectivity and ellipsometry measurements for series of compositions, $0\leq x\leq 1$. The interband part of $\sigma_{1}(\omega) $ shifts continuously to higher frequency as Ca-content $x$ increases. Also the intraband spectral weight of $\sigma_{1}(\omega)$ decreases rapidly and essentially vanishes for $x\geq x_{c}=0.35$. These results show that the valence band and the conduction band of Eu$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$B$_{6}$ move away from each other such that their band overlap decreases with increasing Ca-substitution. As a result, the electronic state evolves from the semimetallic structure of EuB$_{6}$ to the insulating CaB$_{6}$ where the two bands are separated to open a finite gap ($\simeq 0.25$ eV) at the X-point of the Brillouin zone., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We report evidence of the absence of zero thermal expansion in well-characterized high-quality polycrystalline samples of YbGaGe. High-quality samples of YbGaGe were produced from high-purity starting elements and were extensively characterized using x-ray powder diffraction, differential thermal analysis, atomic emission spectroscopy, magnetization, and neutron powder diffraction at various temperatures. Our sample melts congruently at 920 C. A small amount of Yb2O3 was found in our sample, which explains the behavior of the magnetic susceptibility. These observations rule out the scenario of electronic valence driven thermal expansion in YbGaGe. We present a consistent overall picture of the electronic structure and ferromagnetic interaction in CaB$_6$, based on our joint transport, optical, and tunneling measurements on high-quality {\em defect-controlled} single crystals. Pure CaB$_6$ single crystals, synthesized with 99.9999 %-pure boron, exhibited fully {\em semiconducting} characteristics, such as monotonic resistance for 2--300 K, a tunneling conductance gap, and an optical absorption threshold at 1.0 eV. {\em Boron-related defects} formed in CaB$_6$ single crystals synthesized with 99.9 %-pure boron induced {\em mid-gap states} 0.18 eV below the conduction band and extra free charge carriers, with the transport, optical, and tunneling properties substantially modified. Remarkably, no ferromagnetic signals were detected from single crystals made with 99.9999 %-pure boron, regardless of stoichiometry, whereas those made with 99.9 %-boron exhibited ferromagnetism within a finite range of carrier density. Temperature-dependent magnetization (M(T)) and specific heat (C_p(T)) measurements were carried out on single crystal Sm_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_{4-delta} (T_c = 16.5 K). The magnetic anisotropy in the static susceptibility, chi {equiv} M/H, is apparent not only in its magnitude but also in its temperature dependence, with chi_{perp} for H{perp}c larger than chi_{parallel} for H{parallel}c. For both field orientations, chi does not follow the Curie-Weiss behavior due to the small energy gap of the J = 7/2 multiplet above the J = 5/2 ground-state multiplet. However, with increasing temperature, chi_{parallel}(T) exhibits a broad minimum near 100 K and then a slow increase while chi_{perp}(T) shows a monotonic decrease. A sharp peak in C_p(T) at 4.7 K manifests an antiferromagnetic ordering. The electronic contribution, gamma, to C_p(T) is estimated to be gamma = 103.2 (7) mJ/moleSmK^2. The entropy associated with the magnetic ordering is much smaller than Rln2, where R is the gas constant, which is usually expected for the doublet ground state of Sm^{+3}. The unusual magnetic and electronic properties evident in M(T) and C_p(T) are probably due to a strong anisotropic interaction between conduction electrons and localized electrons at Sm^{+3} sites., Comment: 5 pages, 5 encapsulated postscript figures, latex

The coexistence of the superconductivity and magnetism in the Ho$_{1-x}$Dy$_x$Ni$_2$B$_2$C is studied by using Ginzburg-Landau theory. This alloy shows the coexistence and complex interplay of superconducting and magnetic order. We propose a phenomenological model which includes two magnetic and two superconducting order parameters accounting for the multi-band structure of this material. We describe phenomenologically the magnetic fluctuations and order and demonstrate that they lead to anomalous behavior of the upper critical field. The doping dependence of $T_c$ in Ho$_{1-x}$Dy$_x$Ni$_2$B$_2$C showing a reentrance behavior are analyzed yielding a very good agreement with experimental data., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, REVTeX, submitted to PRL

Superconductivity-induced changes in the electronic Raman scattering response were observed for the RNi$_2$B$_2$C (R = Y, Lu) system in different scattering geometries. In the superconducting state, 2$\Delta$-like peaks were observed in A$_{1g}$, B$_{1g}$, and B$_{2g}$ spectra from single crystals. The peaks in A$_{1g}$ and B$_{2g}$ symmetries are significantly sharper and stronger than the peak in B$_{1g}$ symmetry. The temperature dependence of the frequencies of the 2$\Delta$-like peaks shows typical BCS-type behavior, but the apparent values of the $2\Delta$ gap are strongly anisotropic for both systems. In addition, for both YNi$_2$B$_2$C and LuNi$_2$B$_2$C systems, there exists reproducible scattering strength below the $2\Delta$ gap which is roughly linear to the frequency in B$_{1g}$ and B$_{2g}$ symmetries. This discovery of scattering below the gap in non-magnetic borocarbide superconductors, which are thought to be conventional BCS-type superconductors, is a challenge for current understanding of superconductivity in this system., Comment: Added text, changed a figure, and added references. Measurements of the rf penetration depth \lambda(T,H,\theta ) are used to study the superconducting order parameter, vortex dynamics in the mixed state and delineate critical fields in the borocarbide superconductor YNi_2B_2C. The lower critical field has an anomalous T dependence, H_{c1}(T)=1.12[1-(T/T_c)] kOe, which is however consistent with independent superfluid density measurements at microwave frequencies. The vortex response is dominated by viscous flux flow, indicative of extremely weak pinning, and is parametrized by a field scale H_{c2,eff}. The angular dependence of the vortex contribution \lambda(\theta) is in good agreement with the Coffey-Clem model. Structure is seen in the depairing transition in the vicinity of the upper critical field, with the existence of well-defined critical fields H_{c2a}, H_{c2b} and H_{c2c}, with the vortex field scale H_{c2,eff} closest to H_{c2b}. Overall the measurements indicate that YNi_2B_2C has a rich and unusual field dependence of its transport parameters., Comment: 6 LaTeX pages with 6 EPS figures, uses RevTeX, multicol and epsf. We report measurements of the microwave surface impedance of the borocarbide family of superconductors LnNi2B2C (Ln=Y, Er, Tm, Ho). The experiments enable direct measurements of the superfluid density, and are particularly sensitive to the influence of magnetic pairbreaking. In HoNi2B2C the antiferromagnetic transition is clearly observed at zero field, and leads to a drastic reduction of the superfluid density, which recovers at lower temperatures. In ErNi2B2C the antiferromagnetic transition is not seen in zero field data. Magnetic effects are responsible for anomalies in the low temperature surface impedance below approximately 4K in HoNi2B2C and TmNi2B2C. The temperature dependence of the microwave impedance disagrees with simple BCS calculations., Comment: 12 pages, revtex, 6 uuencoded figures.
