Subjective career success of civil servants is a major focus of both scholars and public managers, but few studies have explored its antecedents from the perspective of the expression of a special positive emotion. To narrow the gap regarding the antecedents of civil servants’ subjective career success, we use the broaden-and-build theory of positive emotions to examine whether, how, and when civil servants’ gratitude expression to their supervisors is related to their subjective career success, as well as the mediating role of supervisors’ mentoring and the moderating role of traditionality. By using the survey data of 216 supervisor-subordinate dyads from the Chinese public sector, we found that gratitude expression by subordinates is positively related to their subjective career success, and this relationship is mediated by their supervisors’ mentoring. The relationship between gratitude expression to supervisors and supervisors’ mentoring is positively moderated by supervisor traditionality. Moreover, supervisor traditionality plays a positive moderating role in the association between gratitude expression to supervisors and subjective career success via supervisors’ mentoring. The above relationships are stronger when supervisors have a high level of traditionality. These findings contribute to the literature and generate managerial implications for civil servants’ career success management.

Based on urban community residents subjective evaluation on community sports services, this paper discusses the direct impact of perceived quality on public trust, and the mediating effect of public satisfaction on it. The empirical results show that; (1) Perceived quality has a significant positive impact on public trust; (2) Public satisfaction shows marked positive correlation with perceived quality and public trust respectively; (3 ) Public satisfaction plays a part in mediating perceived quality and public trust. By constructing an intermediary hypothesis model, this paper reveals the internal function mechanism of the public, which begins with subjective cognition (perceived quality), and then emotional experience ( public satisfaction), and ends with behavioral intention ( public trust). This mechanism not only provides a new perspective for future research, and also provides a useful reference for organizational decision -- makers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Acute lung injury is a common consequence of sepsis, a life-threatening inflammatory response caused by severe infection. In this study, we elucidate the attenuating effects of synthetic Arg-Gly-Asp-Ser peptides (RGDs) on acute lung injury in a sepsis mouse model. We further reveal that the beneficial effects of RGDs stem from their negative regulation of the Wisp1 (WNT1-inducible signaling pathway)–integrin 6 pathway. After inducing sepsis using cecal ligation and puncture (CLP), mice were randomized into experimental and control groups, and survival rates were recorded over 7 days, whereas only 20 of mice subjected to CLP survived when compared with untreated controls; the addition of RGDs to this treatment regimen dramatically increased the survival rate to 80. Histological analysis revealed acute lung injury in CLP-treated mice, whereas those subjected to the combined treatment of CLP and RGDs showed a considerable decrease in lung injury severity. The addition of RGDs also dramatically attenuated other common sepsis-associated effects, such as increased white blood cell number in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and decreased pulmonary capillary barrier function. Furthermore, treatment with RGDs decreased the serum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid levels of inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor and interleukin 6, contrary to the CLP treatment alone that increased the levels of these proteins. Interestingly, however, RGDs had no detectable effect on bacterial invasion following sepsis induction. In addition, mice treated with RGDs showed decreased levels of wisp1and integrin 6 when compared with CLP-treated mice. In the present study, a linkage between Wisp1 and integrin 6 was evaluated in vivo. Most strikingly, RGDs resulted in a decreased association of Wisp1 with integrin 6 based on coimmunoprecipitation analyses. These data suggest that RGDs ameliorate acute lung injury in a sepsis mouse model by inhibiting the Wisp1–integrin 6 pathway.

Hepatic ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury contributes to hepatic dysfunction and failure after liver transplantation, major hepatic resection, trauma, and hypovolemic shock. Therefore, reducing IR injury is an important goal to improve the outcome of these procedures. Recently, high-mobility group box 1 protein (HMGB1) has been identified as a pathogenic mediator in several inflammatory diseases, including hepatic IR. PNU-282987, a selective 7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor agonist, prevents nuclear factor B (NF-B) activation and thereby inhibits cytokine secretion through a specific cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway. Our study was designed to evaluate whether PNU-282987 would inhibit HMGB1 expression and prevent IR-induced liver damage. C57BL6 mice were randomly divided into 3 groups as follows: sham group, vehicle plus IR group, and PNU-282987 plus IR group. Mice were subjected to 70 partial hepatic IR for 60 min and pretreated with either vehicle or with PNU-282987, and blood and hepatic tissue samples were collected at 3, 6, and 12 h following reperfusion. The results showed that pretreatment with PNU-282987 decreased serum transaminase levels and ameliorated liver injury after hepatic IR. Moreover, pretreatment with PNU-282987 suppressed NF-B activation, cytokine production (tumor necrosis factor , interleukin 1), and HMGB1 expression in liver after hepatic IR. These observations suggest that PNU-282987 protects the liver from IR injury possibly by inhibiting HMGB1 expression, suppressing cytokine production, and preventing NF-B activation in mice.
