67. Empirical Study of the GARCH model with Rational Errors

Abstract

We use the GARCH model with a fat-tailed error distribution described by a rational function and apply it for the stock price data on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. To determine the model parameters we perform the Bayesian inference to the model. The Bayesian inference is implemented by the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm with an adaptive multi-dimensional Student's t-proposal density. In order to compare the model with the GARCH model with the standard normal errors we calculate information criterions: AIC and DIC, and find that both criterions favor the GARCH model with a rational error distribution. We also calculate the accuracy of the volatility by using the realized volatility and find that a good accuracy is obtained for the GARCH model with a rational error distribution. Thus we conclude that the GARCH model with a rational error distribution is superior to the GARCH model with the normal errors and it can be used as an alternative GARCH model to those with other fat-tailed distributions., Comment: 10 pages

Abstract

We analyze realized volatilities constructed using high-frequency stock data on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. In order to avoid non-trading hours issue in volatility calculations we define two realized volatilities calculated separately in the two trading sessions of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, i.e. morning and afternoon sessions. After calculating the realized volatilities at various sampling frequencies we evaluate the bias from the microstructure noise as a function of sampling frequency. Taking into account of the bias to realized volatility we examine returns standardized by realized volatilities and confirm that price returns on the Tokyo Stock Exchange are described approximately by Gaussian time series with time-varying volatility, i.e. consistent with a mixture of distributions hypothesis., Comment: 12 pages, reference corrected

Abstract

Engineered nano-ZnO is extensively utilized in both production and daily life, leading to its inevitable entry into the wastewater treatment system through various pathways. Nitrogen removal microorganisms in wastewater treatment systems are highly susceptible to environmental impacts. The antibacterial properties of nano-ZnO can impede the biological nitrogen removal (BNR) process and adversely affect the nitrogen removal performance. A comprehensive understanding of the inhibitory effect and mechanism of nano-ZnO on the BNR process is crucial in devising appropriate countermeasures to ensure optimal nitrogen removal performance. This review provides an overview of the sources of nano-ZnO in the environment, its impact on the BNR process, and the inhibition mechanism, and proposes potential methods that can mitigate the inhibitory effect of nano-ZnO. Additionally, future prospects are also discussed. This review serves as a foundation for a deeper understanding of the inhibition of engineered nano-ZnO on the BNR process and aids in guiding efforts to maintain the nitrogen removal performance in the presence of engineered nano-ZnO. 87. An integrated, non-destructive method for evaluating core quality from R/V Legend’s giant piston coring system

Abstract

The quality of marine sediment cores is significant for investigations on marine geohazards, paleoceanography, paleoclimatology, and marine environmental changes. The identification of genuine or artificial sedimentary structures is essential to the development of long piston coring procedures. In this study, we highlight an overlooked primary process of a standard procedure and its effect on the deformation of a sedimentary sequence. The LGD-T32/LGD-T43 cruises of the R/V Legend were designed to test the capability of 8-m-long piston coring offshore southwestern Taiwan. To examine how giant piston coring procedures have shaped the retrieval of sedimentary sequences and affected core quality, we apply well-developed, non-destructive analyses, including physical property measurements, visible color reflectance and the curvature index, to recovered sediments. The continuous sequences of four giant sediment cores at the revisited site are therefore used to provide the basis for comparison with non-destructive results. Rather than dewatering or lithifying the units themselves, we suggest that during the coring procedure, an abnormal pulling force could destroy the balance among the sediments and thus cause the observed deformations of sedimentary features with different magnitudes. We demonstrate that an integration of the curvature index and color reflectance is a better way to evaluate the transformation and distorted sedimentary sequences. Furthermore, using a Taiwan Ocean Research Institute (TORI)-revised piston could potentially produce an abnormal pulling force inside a tube and causing oversampling and distorted sedimentary features, as evidenced by integrated results.

Abstract

Objective To evaluate the tensile bonding strength (TBS) and antibacterial properties when an orthodon⁃ tic adhesive was added with nanohydroxyapatite (nHAp). Methods Light cure orthodontic adhesive (Grengloo) was blended with 2% TiO2 containing nHAp nanoparticles by 0%、10%、20%、30% (w/w), while the control was not blended with nHAp. Brackets were bonded to extracted premolars by these new adhesives. TBS of 5groups were determined, and the adhesive remnant index (ARI) scores were assessed. Composite discs specimen were prepared, incubated with bacte⁃ rial suspension for 48 h, and tested for antibacterial properties. Results No significant difference was found in ARI. The colony unit counts and lactate productionof the groups containing 2% TiO2 were significantly reduced. The colony unit counts and lactate production were without relationship with nHAp. The tensile bonding strength drastically de⁃ creased when containing more than 10% nHAp. Conclusion nHAp might not enhance the antibacterial effects of Gren⁃ gloo.
