We present a novel, web-based visual eye-tracking analytics tool called Gazealytics. Our open-source toolkit features a unified combination of gaze analytics features that support flexible exploratory analysis, along with annotation of areas of interest (AOI) and filter options based on multiple criteria to visually analyse eye tracking data across time and space. Gazealytics features coordinated views unifying spatiotemporal exploration of fixations and scanpaths for various analytical tasks. A novel matrix representation allows analysis of relationships between such spatial or temporal features. Data can be grouped across samples, user-defined AOIs or time windows of interest (TWIs) to support aggregate or filtered analysis of gaze activity. This approach exceeds the capabilities of existing systems by supporting flexible comparison between and within subjects, hypothesis generation, data analysis and communication of insights. We demonstrate in a walkthrough that Gazealytics supports multiple types of eye tracking datasets and analytical tasks.

We investigate reading strategies for node-link diagrams that wrap around the boundaries in a flattened torus topology by examining eye tracking data recorded in a previous controlled study. Prior work showed that torus drawing affords greater flexibility in clutter reduction than traditional node-link representations, but impedes link-and-path exploration tasks, while repeating tiles around boundaries aids comprehension. However, it remains unclear what strategies users apply in different wrapping settings. This is important for design implications for future work on more effective wrapped visualizations for network applications, and cyclic data that could benefit from wrapping. We perform visual-exploratory data analysis of gaze data, and conduct statistical tests derived from the patterns identified. Results show distinguishable gaze behaviors, with more visual glances and transitions between areas of interest in the non-replicated layout. Full-context has more successful visual searches than partial-context, but the gaze allocation indicates that the layout could be more space-efficient.

Superconductivity at low temperature -- observed in lithium and bismuth, as well as in various low-density superconductors -- calls for developing reliable theoretical and experimental tools for predicting ultralow critical temperatures, $T_c$, of Cooper instability in a system demonstrating nothing but normal Fermi liquid behavior in a broad range of temperatures below the Fermi energy, $T_{\rm F}$. Equally important are controlled predictions of stability in a given Cooper channel. We identify such a protocol within the paradigm of precursory Cooper flow -- a universal ansatz describing logarithmically slow temperature evolution of the linear response of the normal state to the pair-creating perturbation. Applying this framework to the two-dimensional uniform electron gas, we reveal a series of exotic superconducting states, pushing controlled theoretical predictions of $T_c$ to the unprecedentedly low scale of $10^{-100} T_{\rm F}$.

Mining the spatial and temporal correlation of wind farm output data is beneficial for enhancing the precision of ultra-short-term wind power prediction. However, if the wind farms are owned by separate entities, they may be reluctant to share their data directly due to privacy concerns as well as business management regulation policies. Although cryptographic approaches have been designed to protect privacy in the process of data sharing, it is still a challenging problem to encrypt the original data while extracting the nonlinear relationship among multiple wind farms in the machine learning process. This paper presents pwXGBoost, a technique based on the machine learning tree model and secure multi-party computation (SMPC) that can successfully extract complicated relationships while preserving data privacy. A maximum mean discrepancy (MMD) based scheme is proposed to effectively choose adjacent candidate wind farms to participate in the collaborative model training, therefore improving the accuracy and reducing the burden of data acquisition. The proposed method was evaluated on real world data collected from a cluster of wind farms in Inner Mongolia, China, demonstrating that it is capable of achieving considerable efficiency and performance improvements while preserving privacy

Several recent works have introduced highly compact representations of single-particle Green's functions in the imaginary time and Matsubara frequency domains, as well as efficient interpolation grids used to recover the representations. In particular, the intermediate representation with sparse sampling and the discrete Lehmann representation (DLR) make use of low-rank compression techniques to obtain optimal approximations with controllable accuracy. We consider the use of the DLR in dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) calculations, and in particular, show that the standard full Matsubara frequency grid can be replaced by the compact grid of DLR Matsubara frequency nodes. We test the performance of the method for a DMFT calculation of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ at temperature $50$K using a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo impurity solver, and demonstrate that Matsubara frequency quantities can be represented on a grid of only $36$ nodes with no reduction in accuracy, or increase in the number of self-consistent iterations, despite the presence of significant Monte Carlo noise., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Quantile regression is increasingly encountered in modern big data applications due to its robustness and flexibility. We consider the scenario of learning the conditional quantiles of a specific target population when the available data may go beyond the target and be supplemented from other sources that possibly share similarities with the target. A crucial question is how to properly distinguish and utilize useful information from other sources to improve the quantile estimation and inference at the target. We develop transfer learning methods for high-dimensional quantile regression by detecting informative sources whose models are similar to the target and utilizing them to improve the target model. We show that under reasonable conditions, the detection of the informative sources based on sample splitting is consistent. Compared to the naive estimator with only the target data, the transfer learning estimator achieves a much lower error rate as a function of the sample sizes, the signal-to-noise ratios, and the similarity measures among the target and the source models. Extensive simulation studies demonstrate the superiority of our proposed approach. We apply our methods to tackle the problem of detecting hard-landing risk for flight safety and show the benefits and insights gained from transfer learning of three different types of airplanes: Boeing 737, Airbus A320, and Airbus A380.

Importance: Social determinants of health (SDOH) are known to be associated with increased risk of suicidal behaviors, but few studies utilized SDOH from unstructured electronic health record (EHR) notes. Objective: To investigate associations between suicide and recent SDOH, identified using structured and unstructured data. Design: Nested case-control study. Setting: EHR data from the US Veterans Health Administration (VHA). Participants: 6,122,785 Veterans who received care in the US VHA between October 1, 2010, and September 30, 2015. Exposures: Occurrence of SDOH over a maximum span of two years compared with no occurrence of SDOH. Main Outcomes and Measures: Cases of suicide deaths were matched with 4 controls on birth year, cohort entry date, sex, and duration of follow-up. We developed an NLP system to extract SDOH from unstructured notes. Structured data, NLP on unstructured data, and combining them yielded six, eight and nine SDOH respectively. Adjusted odds ratios (aORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using conditional logistic regression. Results: In our cohort, 8,821 Veterans committed suicide during 23,725,382 person-years of follow-up (incidence rate 37.18/100,000 person-years). Our cohort was mostly male (92.23%) and white (76.99%). Across the five common SDOH as covariates, NLP-extracted SDOH, on average, covered 80.03% of all SDOH occurrences. All SDOH, measured by structured data and NLP, were significantly associated with increased risk of suicide. The SDOH with the largest effects was legal problems (aOR=2.66, 95% CI=.46-2.89), followed by violence (aOR=2.12, 95% CI=1.98-2.27). NLP-extracted and structured SDOH were also associated with suicide. Conclusions and Relevance: NLP-extracted SDOH were always significantly associated with increased risk of suicide among Veterans, suggesting the potential of NLP in public health studies., Comment: Submitted to JAMA Network Open

Due to the absence of a library for non-linear function evaluation, so-called general-purpose secure multi-party computation (MPC) are not as ''general'' as MPC programmers expect. Prior arts either naively reuse plaintext methods, resulting in suboptimal performance and even incorrect results, or handcraft ad hoc approximations for specific functions or platforms. We propose a general technique, NFGen, that utilizes pre-computed discrete piecewise polynomials to accurately approximate generic functions using fixed-point numbers. We implement it using a performance-prediction-based code generator to support different platforms. Conducting extensive evaluations of 23 non-linear functions against six MPC protocols on two platforms, we demonstrate significant performance, accuracy, and generality improvements over existing methods., Comment: 20 pages, full version of CCS22 paper

Traditional visualisations are designed to be shown on a flat surface (screen or page) but most data is not "flat". For example, the surface of the earth exists on a sphere, however, when that surface is presented on a flat map, key information is hidden, such as geographic paths on the spherical surface being wrapped across the boundaries of the flat map. Similarly, cyclical time-series data has no beginning or end. When such cyclical data is presented on a traditional linear chart, the viewer needs to perceive continuity of the visualisation across the chart's boundaries. Mentally reconnecting the chart across such a boundary may induce additional cognitive load. More complex data such as a network diagram with hundreds or thousands of links between data points leads to a densely connected structure that is even less "flat" and needs to wrap around in multiple dimensions. To improve the usability of these visualisations, this thesis explores a novel class of interactive wrapped data visualisations, i.e., visualisations that wrap around continuously when interactively panned on a two-dimensional projection of surfaces of 3D shapes, specifically, cylinder, torus, or sphere. We start with a systematic exploration of the design space of interactive wrapped visualisations, characterising the visualisations that help people understand the relationship within the data. Subsequently, we investigate a series of wrappable visualisations for cyclical time series, network, and geographic data. We show that these interactive visualisations better preserve the spatial relations in the case of geospatial data, and better reveal the data's underlying structure in the case of abstract data such as networks and cyclical time series. Furthermore, to assist future research and development, we contribute layout algorithms and toolkits to help create pannable wrapped visualisations.

We address the outstanding problem of electron pairing in the presence of strong Coulomb repulsion at small to moderate values of the Coulomb parameter, $r_s \lesssim 2$, and demonstrate that the pseudopotential framework is fundamentally biased and uncontrolled. Instead, one has to break the net result into two distinctively different effects: the Fermi liquid renormalization factor and the change in the effective low-energy coupling. The latter quantity is shown to behave non-monotonically with an extremum at $ r_s\approx 0.75$. Within the random-phase approximation, Coulomb interaction starts to enhance the effective pairing coupling at $r_s >2$, and the suppression of the critical temperature is entirely due to the renormalized Fermi liquid properties. Leading vertex corrections change this picture only quantitatively. Our results call for radical reconsideration of the widely accepted repulsive pseudopotential approach and show the need for precise microscopic treatment of Coulomb interactions in the problem of superconducting instability.

Statistical learning with a large number of rare binary features is commonly encountered in analyzing electronic health records (EHR) data, especially in the modeling of disease onset with prior medical diagnoses and procedures. Dealing with the resulting highly sparse and large-scale binary feature matrix is notoriously challenging as conventional methods may suffer from a lack of power in testing and inconsistency in model fitting while machine learning methods may suffer from the inability of producing interpretable results or clinically-meaningful risk factors. To improve EHR-based modeling and utilize the natural hierarchical structure of disease classification, we propose a tree-guided feature selection and logic aggregation approach for large-scale regression with rare binary features, in which dimension reduction is achieved through not only a sparsity pursuit but also an aggregation promoter with the logic operator of ``or''. We convert the combinatorial problem into a convex linearly-constrained regularized estimation, which enables scalable computation with theoretical guarantees. In a suicide risk study with EHR data, our approach is able to select and aggregate prior mental health diagnoses as guided by the diagnosis hierarchy of the International Classification of Diseases. By balancing the rarity and specificity of the EHR diagnosis records, our strategy improves both prediction and model interpretation. We identify important higher-level categories and subcategories of mental health conditions and simultaneously determine the level of specificity needed for each of them in predicting suicide risk.

We propose to develop a wide-field and ultra-high-precision photometric survey mission, temporarily named "Earth 2.0 (ET)". This mission is designed to measure, for the first time, the occurrence rate and the orbital distributions of Earth-sized planets. ET consists of seven 30cm telescopes, to be launched to the Earth-Sun's L2 point. Six of these are transit telescopes with a field of view of 500 square degrees. Staring in the direction that encompasses the original Kepler field for four continuous years, this monitoring will return tens of thousands of transiting planets, including the elusive Earth twins orbiting solar-type stars. The seventh telescope is a 30cm microlensing telescope that will monitor an area of 4 square degrees toward the galactic bulge. This, combined with simultaneous ground-based KMTNet observations, will measure masses for hundreds of long-period and free-floating planets. Together, the transit and the microlensing telescopes will revolutionize our understandings of terrestrial planets across a large swath of orbital distances and free space. Precise calculations of dynamics in the homogeneous electron gas (jellium model) are of fundamental importance for design and characterization of new materials. We introduce a diagrammatic Monte Carlo technique based on algorithmic Matsubara integration that allows us to compute frequency and momentum resolved finite temperature response directly in the real frequency domain using series of connected Feynman diagrams. The data for charge response at moderate electron density are used to extract the frequency dependence of the exchange-correlation kernel at finite momenta and temperature. The study of warm dense matter, widely existing in nature and laboratories, is challenging due to the interplay of quantum and classical fluctuations. We develop a variational diagrammatic Monte Carlo method and determine the exchange-correlation kernel $K_{\rm XC}(q;T)$ of a warm dense electron gas for a broad range of temperature $T$ and momentum $q$. We observe several interesting physics, including the $T$-dependent evolution of the hump structure and the large-$q$ tail and the emergence of a scaling relation. Particularly, by deriving an analytical form for $q \to \infty$, we obtain large-$q$ tails of $K_{\rm XC}$ with high precision. It is shown that the $K_{\rm XC}$ data can be reliably transformed into real space, which can be directly used in density-functional-theory calculations of real warm dense matter.

In recent years microbiome studies have become increasingly prevalent and large-scale. Through high-throughput sequencing technologies and well-established analytical pipelines, relative abundance data of operational taxonomic units and their associated taxonomic structures are routinely produced. Since such data can be extremely sparse and high dimensional, there is often a genuine need for dimension reduction to facilitate data visualization and downstream statistical analysis. We propose Principal Amalgamation Analysis (PAA), a novel amalgamation-based and taxonomy-guided dimension reduction paradigm for microbiome data. Our approach aims to aggregate the compositions into a smaller number of principal compositions, guided by the available taxonomic structure, by minimizing a properly measured loss of information. The choice of the loss function is flexible and can be based on familiar diversity indices for preserving either within-sample or between-sample diversity in the data. To enable scalable computation, we develop a hierarchical PAA algorithm to trace the entire trajectory of successive simple amalgamations. Visualization tools including dendrogram, scree plot, and ordination plot are developed. The effectiveness of PAA is demonstrated using gut microbiome data from a preterm infant study and an HIV infection study.

Hypothetical metals having optical absorption losses as low as those of the transparent insulators, if found, could revolutionize optoelectronics. We perform the first high-throughput search for lossless metals among all known inorganic materials in the databases of over 100,000 entries. The 381 candidates are identified -- having well-isolated partially-filled bands -- and are analyzed by defining the figures of merit and classifying their real-space conductive connectivity. The existing experimental evidence of most candidates being insulating, instead of conducting, is due to the limitation of current density functional theory in predicting narrow-band metals that are unstable against magnetism, structural distortion, or electron-electron interactions. We propose future research directions including conductive oxides, intercalating layered materials, and compressing these false-metal candidates under high pressures into eventual lossless metals., Comment: 36 pages, 86 figures, 3 table

There are many methods for projecting spherical maps onto the plane. Interactive versions of these projections allow the user to centre the region of interest. However, the effects of such interaction have not previously been evaluated. In a study with 120 participants we find interaction provides significantly more accurate area, direction and distance estimation in such projections. The surface of 3D sphere and torus topologies provides a continuous surface for uninterrupted network layout. But how best to project spherical network layouts to 2D screens has not been studied, nor have such spherical network projections been compared to torus projections. Using the most successful interactive sphere projections from our first study, we compare spherical, standard and toroidal layouts of networks for cluster and path following tasks with 96 participants, finding benefits for both spherical and toroidal layouts over standard network layouts in terms of accuracy for cluster understanding tasks.

We study the Cooper instability in jellium model in the controlled regime of small to intermediate values of the Coulomb parameter $r_s \leq 2$. We confirm that superconductivity naturally emerges from purely repulsive interactions described by the Kukkonen-Overhauser vertex function. By employing the implicit renormalization approach we reveal that even in the small-$r_s$ limit, the dominant mechanism behind Cooper instability is based on dynamic screening of the Coulomb interaction--accurately captured by the random phase approximation, whereas the Kohn-Luttinger contribution is negligibly small and, thus, not relevant.

In this paper, we follow Eftekhari's work to give a non-local convergence analysis of deep linear networks. Specifically, we consider optimizing deep linear networks which have a layer with one neuron under quadratic loss. We describe the convergent point of trajectories with arbitrary starting point under gradient flow, including the paths which converge to one of the saddle points or the original point. We also show specific convergence rates of trajectories that converge to the global minimizer by stages. To achieve these results, this paper mainly extends the machinery in Eftekhari's work to provably identify the rank-stable set and the global minimizer convergent set. We also give specific examples to show the necessity of our definitions. Crucially, as far as we know, our results appear to be the first to give a non-local global analysis of linear neural networks from arbitrary initialized points, rather than the lazy training regime which has dominated the literature of neural networks, and restricted benign initialization in Eftekhari's work. We also note that extending our results to general linear networks without one hidden neuron assumption remains a challenging open problem.
