Abstract

Nonwoven fabrics have merits, and for example, they can be simply and quickly processed with a variety of materials and an easily changeable manufacturing process. This study aims to examine the influences of the addition of sodium alginate (SA) and the concentration of calcium chloride (CaCl2) on the properties of the composite nonwoven fabrics. Chitosan (CS) micro-particles and SA solution are cross-linked with CaCl2 with various concentrations, combined with farir heat preservative staples (FT)/cotton (C) nonwoven fabrics, and then freeze-dried to form CS/SA/FT/C composite nonwoven fabrics. Afterwards, physical property tests are performed on the resulting composite nonwoven fabrics to determine their properties as related to various concentrations of CaCl2. The addition of SA decreases the water vapor permeability of FT/C nonwoven fabrics by 15 %, but the concentrations of CaCl2 do not influence the water vapor permeability. Compared to FT/C nonwoven fabrics, CS/SA/FT/C composite nonwoven fabrics have significantly lower water absorbency and water vapor permeability, but a greater stiffness.

The aim of this study is to characterize the functional recovery patterns of ischemic stroke (IS) and intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) patients under post-acute care stroke rehabilitation.Methods: This retrospective study analyzed the data of patients enrolled in the Post-Acute Care-Cerebrovascular Disease (PAC-CVD) rehabilitation program, which provides an individualized 1- to 3-hour intensive physical, occupational, and speech and language therapy for post-acute stroke patients in Taoyuan Chang Gung Memorial hospital in Taiwan. Our primary endpoint measure was Barthel Index (BI), and secondary endpoint measures included other 12 functional measures.Results: A total of 489 patients were included for analysis. Patients with stroke history had less BI improvement than those who suffered their first-ever stroke. In first-ever stroke patients who had completed 6 to 12 weeks of PAC-CVD program, subcortical ICH patients had greater BI, quality of life, sensation, and balance improvements, and had greater late-phase recovery than their IS counterparts. In IS patients, those with age > 75 had less BI improvement; those with National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score 1– 5 had greater Motor Activity Log quality of use (MAL-quality) improvement than those with NIHSS score > 5; those with Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score ≥ 24 had greater BI and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) improvement. Using the general linear model, previous stroke (ß: − 6.148, p=0.01) and subcortical ICH (ß: 5.04, p=0.03) were factors associated with BI improvement.Conclusion: Subcortical ICH patients have greater functional improvement and greater late-phase recovery than their IS counterparts following PAC rehabilitation. More studies are needed to validate our findings and unravel the underlying mechanisms of stroke recovery to optimize the treatment strategy following a stroke.Keywords: activities of daily living, functional recovery, hemorrhagic stroke, ischemic stroke, post-acute care, rehabilitation

Abstract

Objectives Prediction of activities of daily living (ADL) is crucial for optimized care of post-stroke patients. However, no suitably-validated and practical models are currently available in clinical practice. Methods Participants of a Post-acute Care-Cerebrovascular Diseases (PAC-CVD) program from a reference hospital in Taiwan between 2014 and 2016 were enrolled in this study. Based on 15 rehabilitation assessments, machine learning (ML) methods, namely logistic regression (LR), support vector machine (SVM), and random forest (RF), were used to predict the Barthel index (BI) status at discharge. Furthermore, SVM and linear regression were used to predict the actual BI scores at discharge. Results A total of 313 individuals (men: 208; women: 105) were enrolled in the study. All the classification models outperformed single assessments in predicting the BI statuses of the patients at discharge. The performance of the LR and RF algorithms was higher (area under ROC curve (AUC): 0.79) than that of SVM algorithm (AUC: 0.77). In addition, the mean absolute errors of both SVM and linear regression models in predicting the actual BI score at discharge were 9.86 and 9.95, respectively. Conclusions The proposed ML-based method provides a promising and practical computer-assisted decision making tool for predicting ADL in clinical practice.

Results indicate that the selective cytotoxic activity of 2-methyladenosine against Mycobacterium smegmatis is mediated by the phosphorylated metabolites of the compound. 2-methyladenosine inhibits ATP synthesis in M. smegmatis, indicating that it interferes in the de novo purine syntheis.

Abstract

Background. The construct validity and reliability of the short form of the Wolf Motor Function Test (S-WMFT) in people with subacute stroke and chronic stroke (S-WMFT subacute stroke and chronic stroke versions) have not been investigated. Objective. The purpose of this study was to investigate the dimensionality, item difficulty hierarchy, differential item functioning (DIF), and reliability of the S-WMFT subacute stroke and chronic stroke versions in people with mild to moderate upper-extremity (UE) dysfunction. Design. This was a secondary study in which data collected from randomized controlled trials were used. Methods. Data were collected at baseline from 97 people with chronic stroke (>12 months after stroke) and 75 people with subacute stroke (3-9 months after stroke) at 3 medical centers in Taiwan. Test structure, hierarchical properties, DIF, and reliability were assessed with Rasch analysis. Results. The test structure for both versions was unidimensional. No DIF relevant to sex, age, or stroke location (hemispheric laterality) was detected. The tasks of moving a hand to a box and moving a hand to a table in the S-WMFT for subacute stroke showed a significantly high correlation. The reliability coefficients for both versions were approximately .90. Limitations. The findings were limited to people with stroke and mild to moderate impairment of UE function. Conclusions. The S-WMFT subacute stroke and chronic stroke versions are useful tools for assessing UE function in different subgroups of people with stroke and show evidence of construct validity and reliability. A high correlation between the tasks of moving a hand to a box and moving a hand to a table in the S-WMFT for subacute stroke suggests that the removal of 1 of these 2 items is warranted., More than 80% of people who have had a stroke have impaired function of the upper extremity 0dE), (1) and many do not regain full functional abilities of their arms [...]

Research was conducted to examine the effect of acetate on molecular and physiological aspects of Clostridium beijerinckii NCIMB 8052 solvent production and strain degeneration. Another objective was to study the role of acetoacetyl-coenzyme A:acyl-CoA transferase in both solvent production and acid reassimilation. Results indicate that the addition of acetate to MP2 medium may induce the expression of the sol operon.

Abstract

The molecular and physiological mechanisms involved in the enhancement of solvent production by Clostridium beijerenckii BA101 are investigated. The specific activities and mRNA expression levels linked with coenzyme A transferase, acetoacetate decarboxylase and butyraldehyde dehydrogenase are elevated in hyper-solvent-producing Clostridium beijerinckii BA101 during the exponential growth phase. It is assumed that the increase in expression of the sol operon and associated enzyme functions may play a role in solvent production by Clostridium beijerinckii.
