Abstract

The microbiologically influenced corrosion of 201 stainless steel by Shewanella algae was investigated via modulating the concentration of fumarate (electron acceptor) in the medium and constructing mutant strains induced by ΔOmcA. The ICP-MS and electrochemical tests showed that the presence of S. algae enhanced the degradation of the passive film; the lack of an electron acceptor further aggravated the effect and mainly affected the early stage of MIC. The electrochemical tests and atomic force microscopy characterization revealed that the ability of ΔOmcA to transfer electrons to the passive film was significantly reduced in the absence of the c-type cytochrome OmcA related to EET progress, leading to the lower corrosion rate of the steel. Abstract

The microbiologically influenced corrosion of pure iron was investigated in the presence of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 with various levels of exogenous riboflavin (RF) serving as electron shuttles for extracellular electron transfer (EET). With more RF available, a larger and denser phosphate layer was formed on the surface of pure iron by the bacteria. The results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, linear polarization resistance and potentiodynamic polarization tests showed that the product layer provided good corrosion protection to the pure iron. Abstract

The influence of outward extracellular electron transfer (EET) of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in accelerating corrosion of 304 stainless steel was investigated. With less NO3− available as electron acceptor, P. aeruginosa biofilm accelerated the pitting corrosion. The ICP-MS and XPS results indicated that P. aeruginosa promoted the bioreductive dissolution of iron oxides in the passive film of stainless steel. Abstract

Cu-bearing high-entropy alloys (HEAs) have been proposed for use as structural materials in the marine environment due to their superior mechanical and antimicrobial properties. However, the Al, Cu-enriched precipitations in HEAs damage their corrosion resistance. In this study, we used ultrasonic shot peening (USSP) technology to solve this problem. USSP caused severe plastic deformation of the Al0.3Cu0.5CoCrFeNi HEA surface and dispersed the long-strip Al, Cu-enriched phases into scattered dots, which reduced the galvanic corrosion of the HEA and enhanced passive film formation. The Al, Cu-enriched scattered precipitations also increased the number of Cu2+ ion dissolution sites, leading to the improvement of the alloy's antibacterial properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In this work, the microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) of Fe40(CoCrMnNi)60and Fe60(CoCrMnNi)40medium entropy alloys (MEAs) induced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa(P. aeruginosa) was investigated. Corrosion behaviors during 14 days of immersion in sterile and P. aeruginosa-inoculated culture media are presented. Under sterile conditions, both MEAs exhibited good corrosion resistance against the culture medium solution. In the presence of P. aeruginosa, the pitting corrosion of MEAs was promoted. The results of inductively coupled plasma‒mass spectrometry (ICP‒MS) and potentiodynamic polarization tests showed that the presence of P. aeruginosapromoted the selective dissolution of passive film and accelerated the corrosion of MEAs. The results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Mott–Schottky measurements further demonstrated the degradation effect of P. aeruginosaon the passive film. Compared with Fe60(CoCrMnNi)40, Fe40(CoCrMnNi)60manifested better resistance to the MIC caused by P. aeruginosa, which may be attributed to more Cr oxides and fewer Fe oxides of the passive film.

Abstract

Microbiologically influenced corrosion of metals is prevalent in both natural and industrial environments, causing enormous structural damage and economic loss. Exactly how microbes influence corrosion remains controversial. Here, we show that the pitting corrosion of stainless steel is accelerated in the presence of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 biofilm by extracellular electron transfer between the bacterial cells and the steel electrode, mediated by a riboflavin electron shuttle. From pitting measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Mott-Schottky analyses, the addition of an increased amount of riboflavin is found to induce a more defective passive film on the stainless steel. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy reveals that enhanced bioanodic and biocathodic process can both promote the corrosion of the stainless steel. Using in situ scanning electrochemical microscopy, we observe that extracellular electron transfer between the bacterium and the stainless steel is bidirectional in nature and switchable depending on the passive or active state of the steel surface., Team Arjan Mol

Abstract

The research to date on the dynamic balloon of ring spinning is insufficient to meet the developmental requirements of high-speed ring-spinning machines. Therefore, the present aim is to better understand the dynamic balloon ring and how the spinning tension changes in high-speed spinning. First, taking the Coriolis inertial force, the air resistance, and the yarn dynamics into account, a dynamic model of the spinning yarn balloon is established in this article. The boundary conditions of the balloon shape in the spinning process are derived, and a method for identifying the initial parameters of the balloon shape based on a genetic algorithm is proposed. This method is used to seek the uncertain parameters that meet the optimization objective, obtain the initial parameters that meet the process requirements, and then solve the dynamic model of the balloon shape numerically. Finally, the model is compared and modified with the theory of image processing, whereupon the model for high-speed spinning is obtained. This study provides a good theoretical basis for analyzing the balloon shape and tension in high-speed spinning, and it provides reliable theoretical support for controlling the yarn tension and reducing yarn breakage in the spinning process.
