64. Carbonate deprotonation on an Ni-rich layered cathode: development of a new cis-oligomer as an organic coverage.

Abstract

Ni-rich layered cathodes have a high practical capacity (>200 mA h g−1) and tapped density (>3.6 mg cm−2) and have thus attracted widespread attention in significant applications such as electric vehicles and energy storage. However, the high surface reactivity of these cathodes promotes the decomposition of carbonate solvents, which contributes to the growth of the cathode–electrolyte interphase (CEI) as well as rapid fading of the battery's capacity during long-term cycling. Carbonates are favorable for the deprotonation reaction by the oxygen atom in the Ni-rich layered cathode and in the formation of the CEI. In this study, the deprotonation mechanism of cyclic and linear carbonates on a Ni-rich layered cathode was thoroughly investigated using operando Fourier-transfer infrared spectroscopy, and the reasons for cathode fading could be confirmed in terms of carbonate structures. In addition, a new maleimide oligomer was developed and coated on a Ni-rich layered cathode to inhibit the deprotonation of the carbonates. The maleimide oligomer acts as a cis isomer that provides a bridge function for reacting with oxygen on the cathode surface through its cis configuration. Moreover, this bridge function will keep the carbonates away from the cathode surface for further decomposition during cycling. On the contrary, battery performance exhibited a cycling ability at a high rate, and the new cis–maleimide oligomer helped improve rate capability. Abstract

Protonic ceramic cells show great promises for electrochemical energy conversion and storage, while one of the key challenges lies in fabricating dense electrolytes. Generally, the poor sinterability of most protonic ceramic electrolytes, such as BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.1Yb0.1O3‐δ, is attributed to the Ba evaporation at high temperatures. In a systematic and comparative study of BaCeO3 and BaZrO3, the results demonstrated that Ba tends to segregate to grain boundaries rather than evaporate. Additionally, thermal reduction of Ce4+ to Ce3+ promotes the displacement of Ce to the Ba‐site or the exsolution of CeO2 phase, leading to an abnormal lattice shrinkage of perovskite phase and hindering the electrolyte densification. Contrary to previous beliefs that Ba deficiency inhibits the electrolyte sintering, the findings indicate that it surprisingly promotes the sintering of BaZrO3 perovskites, while excess Ba negatively affects its sintering behavior due to the accumulation of Ba species at grain boundaries. As to BaCeO3, excess Ba improves electrolyte sintering by suppressing the Ce exsolution at high temperatures. Meanwhile, Co‐doping Zr and Ce in the B‐site of protonic perovskite can optimize the sintering characteristic. Abstract

We present a new method, OMSV, for accurately and comprehensively identifying structural variations (SVs) from optical maps. OMSV detects both homozygous and heterozygous SVs, SVs of various types and sizes, and SVs with or without creating or destroying restriction sites. We show that OMSV has high sensitivity and specificity, with clear performance gains over the latest method. Applying OMSV to a human cell line, we identified hundreds of SVs >2 kbp, with 68 % of them missed by sequencing-based callers. Independent experimental validation confirmed the high accuracy of these SVs. The OMSV software is available at http://yiplab.cse.cuhk.edu.hk/omsv/ .

Abstract

BackgroundOptical mapping is a technique for capturing fluorescent signal patterns of long DNA molecules (in the range of 0.1–1 Mbp). Recently, it has been complementing the widely used short-read sequencing technology by assisting with scaffolding and detecting large and complex structural variations (SVs). Here, we introduce a fast, robust and accurate tool called OMBlast for aligning optical maps, the set of signal locations on the molecules generated from optical mapping. Our method is based on the seed-and-extend approach from sequence alignment, with modifications specific to optical mapping.ResultsExperiments with both synthetic and our real data demonstrate that OMBlast has higher accuracy and faster mapping speed than existing alignment methods. Our tool also shows significant improvement when aligning data with SVs.Availability and implementationOMBlast is implemented for Java 1.7 and is released under a GPL license. Abstract

Since there is no current international consensus on the optimal approach for pain management in acute pancreatitis (AP), analgesic practices may vary across different healthcare settings. This study explored global disparities in analgesic use, in particular opioids, during admission and at discharge in hospitalised AP patients. This was a post hoc analysis of the prospective PAINAP database, which included all admissions for AP between April and June 2022 with a 1‐month follow‐up. Demographic details, analgesic use, and clinical outcomes were recorded during admission and at discharge. Odds ratios (ORs) for opioid use during admission and at discharge were identified using multivariable regression analyses. Amongst the 1864 patients (52% males, median age 56 (interquartile range, 41–71)) across three different continents, simple analgesics were predominantly used as the primary analgesic (70%). Opioid use during admission was lowest in European centres (67%). Admission in Asian (OR, 2.53 (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.59–4.04), p< 0.001), and Australian (OR, 5.81 (95% CI, 3.19–10.56), p< 0.001) centres was associated with opioid administration during admission compared with European centres. Increased pain severity, longer pre‐admission pain duration, organ failure, and longer length of admission increased opioid use during admission. At discharge, Asian (OR, 2.01 (95% CI, 1.40–2.88), p< 0.001) and Australian (OR, 1.91 (95% CI, 1.28–2.85), p= 0.002) centres were associated with opioid prescription compared with European centres. Increased pain severity, longer pre‐admission pain duration, acute necrotic collections, and walled‐off necrosis also increased the likelihood of opioid prescription at discharge. There are substantial intercontinental differences in opioid use for AP pain. Accordingly, there is a need for international guidelines on pain management in AP.

Abstract

Chitons (Polyplacophora) are marine molluscs that can be found worldwide from cold waters to the tropics, and play important ecological roles in the environment. However, only two chiton genomes have been sequenced to date. The chiton Liolophura japonica (Lischke, 1873) is one of the most abundant polyplacophorans found throughout East Asia. Our PacBio HiFi reads and Omni-C sequencing data resulted in a high-quality near chromosome-level genome assembly of ∼609 Mb with a scaffold N50 length of 37.34 Mb (96.1% BUSCO). A total of 28,233 genes were predicted, including 28,010 protein-coding ones. The repeat content (27.89%) was similar to that of other Chitonidae species and approximately three times lower than that of the Hanleyidae chiton genome. The genomic resources provided by this work will help to expand our understanding of the evolution of molluscs and the ecological adaptation of chitons.
