52. Psychological help-seeking attitudes and perfectionism in different ethnic groups

Abstract

Perfectionism is multidimensional psychological construct and is highly associated with psychological difficulties. Existing research suggests that there are ethnic variations in perfectionism. However, there are limited studies reporting how perfectionism and psychological difficulties, as well as perfectionism and help-seeking attitudes, can differ across the diverse adult ethnic groups. This thesis aimed to address these research gaps by conducting: a systematic review (Chapter 1) and a cross-sectional empirical study (Chapter 2). Chapter 1, the literature review, identified and synthesized existing research in perfectionism and depression involving comparison of adults from multiple ethnic backgrounds. Nine papers were included in this review. To be eligible, studies needed to be peer-reviewed and published in English; to include measures of perfectionism and depression, and statistical analyses comparing different ethnic groups in relation to these measures. Evaluative concerns (i.e. self-criticism associated with failure or self-perception of failing to meet others' and/or their own expectations) were significantly related to depression across all ethnicities examined. However, there was an inconsistent relationship between depression and achievement striving (i.e. personal standards of perfectionism) and family perfectionism across the ethnic groups examined. The ethnic similarities and differences in perfectionism and depression impose relevant clinical implications. Given these ethnic differences, the results suggest that clinicians should tailor their assessment, formulation and therapeutic interventions accordingly in keeping with the individual's ethnic background. Chapter 2, the empirical paper, drew on the recommendations from the systematic review to examine the ethnic differences in perfectionism and help-seeking attitudes. This study involved University students (n=1066) completing a set of online questionnaires. Two ethnic groups, China-born Chinese International students (n=109) and UK-born White British home students (n=541), were compared on three dimensions of perfectionism as well as depression and anxiety states. Using cluster analysis, two groups were formed: "higher perfectionism and psychological distress" and "lower perfectionism and psychological distress". Multiple ANOVA analyses and t-tests were then performed to examine the ethnic differences between these variables in each cluster group, and how the clusters differed in help-seeking attitudes. The findings revealed that White British students reported significantly greater levels of self-oriented and socially-prescribed perfectionism than Chinese students. Perfectionism and depression and anxiety states were negatively associated with help-seeking attitudes in White British and Chinese student groups. Both groups reporting higher levels of perfectionism and depression and anxiety states had less favourable attitudes to seek help; those with lower levels of perfectionism and psychological distress had more favourable attitudes to seek help. The ethnic variations in perfectionism and psychological distress may pose clinical implications for mental health services. Services should actively promote UK-born White British and Chinese International students' access to mental health services. However, the focus of psychological interventions and psychoeducation should be different for these two ethnic groups.

Abstract

We introduce a one-dimensional model based on the nonlinear Schrodinger/Gross-Pitaevskii equation where the local nonlinearity is subject to spatially periodic modulation in terms of the Jacobi dn function, with three free parameters including the period, amplitude, and internal form-factor. An exact periodic solution is found for each set of parameters and, which is more important for physical realizations, we solve the inverse problem and predict the period and amplitude of the modulation that yields a particular exact spatially periodic state. Numerical stability analysis demonstrates that the periodic states become modulationally unstable for large periods, and regain stability in the limit of an infinite period, which corresponds to a bright soliton pinned to a localized nonlinearity-modulation pattern. Exact dark-bright soliton complex in a coupled system with a localized modulation structure is also briefly considered . Abstract

Casimir forces are of fundamental interest because they originate from quantum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field. Apart from controlling the Casimir force via the optical properties of the materials, a number of novel geometries have been proposed to generate repulsive and/or non-monotonic Casimir forces between bodies separated by vacuum gaps. Experimental realization of these geometries, however, is hindered by the difficulties in alignment when the bodies are brought into close proximity. Here, using an on-chip platform with integrated force sensors and actuators, we circumvent the alignment problem and measure the Casimir force between two surfaces with nanoscale protrusions. We demonstrate that the Casimir force depends non-monotonically on the displacement. At some displacements, the Casimir force leads to an effective stiffening of the nanomechanical spring. Our findings pave the way for exploiting the Casimir force in nanomechanical systems using structures of complex and non-conventional shapes., Comment: 26 pages, 13 figures

57. Exploring a new ligand binding site of G protein-coupled receptors.

Abstract

Identifying a target ligand binding site is an important step for structure-based rational drug design as shown here for G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), which are among the most popular drug targets. We applied long-time scale molecular dynamics simulations, coupled with mutagenesis studies, to two prototypical GPCRs, the M3 and M4 muscarinic acetylcholine receptors. Our results indicate that unlike synthetic antagonists, which bind to the classic orthosteric site, the endogenous agonist acetylcholine is able to diffuse into a much deeper binding pocket. We also discovered that the most recently resolved crystal structure of the LTB4 receptor comprised a bound inverse agonist, which extended its benzamidine moiety to the same binding pocket discovered in this work. Analysis on all resolved GPCR crystal structures indicated that this new pocket could exist in most receptors. Our findings provide new opportunities for GPCR drug discovery.

Abstract

A microelectromechanical oscillator with a gap of 1.25 $\mu$m was immersed in superfluid $^3$He-B and cooled below 250 $\mu$K at various pressures. Mechanical resonances of its shear motion were measured at various levels of driving force. The oscillator enters into a nonlinear regime above a certain threshold velocity. The damping increases rapidly in the nonlinear region and eventually prevents the velocity of the oscillator from increasing beyond the critical velocity which is much lower than the Landau critical velocity. We propose that this peculiar nonlinear behavior stems from the escape of quasiparticles from the surface bound states into the bulk fluid., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

66. Anomalous Damping of a Micro-electro-mechanical Oscillator in Superfluid $^3$He-B

Abstract

The mechanical resonance properties of a micro-electro-mechanical oscillator with a gap of 1.25 $\mu$m was studied in superfluid $^3$He-B at various pressures. The oscillator was driven in the linear damping regime where the damping coefficient is independent of the oscillator velocity. The quality factor of the oscillator remains low ($Q\approx 80$) down to 0.1 $T_c$, 4 orders of magnitude less than the intrinsic quality factor measured in vacuum at 4 K. In addition to the Boltzmann temperature dependent contribution to the damping, a damping proportional to temperature was found to dominate at low temperatures. We propose a multiple scattering mechanism of the surface Andreev bound states to be a possible cause for the anomalous damping., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

A micro-electro-mechanical system vibrating in its shear mode was used to study the viscosity of normal liquid $^3$He from 20mK to 770mK at 3bar, 21bar, and 29bar. The damping coefficient of the oscillator was determined by frequency sweeps through its resonance at each temperature. Using a slide film damping model, the viscosity of the fluid was obtained. Our viscosity values are compared with previous measurements and with calculated values from Fermi liquid theory. The crossover from the classical to the Fermi liquid regime is manifest in the temperature dependence of viscosity. In the Fermi liquid regime, the temperature dependence of viscosity changes from $T^{-1}$ to $T^{-2}$ on cooling, indicating a transition from the Stokes flow to the Couette flow regime., Comment: The following article has been submitted for publication to Physical Review B

68. Correlated anomalous phase diffusion of coupled phononic modes in a side-band driven resonator

Abstract

The dynamical backaction from a periodically driven optical or microwave cavity can reduce the damping of a mechanical resonator, leading to parametric instability accompanied by self-sustained oscillations. Fundamentally, the driving breaks the continuous time-translation symmetry and replaces it with the symmetry with respect to time translation by the driving period. This discrete symmetry should be reflected in the character of the oscillations. Here, we perform experimental and theoretical study of new aspects of the backaction and the discrete time-translation symmetry using a micromechanical resonator designed to have two nonlinearly coupled vibrational modes with strongly differing frequencies and decay rates. We find that self-sustained oscillations are induced not only in the low frequency mode as measured in previous experiments, but also in the high frequency mode. The vibration frequencies and amplitudes are determined by the system nonlinearity, which also leads to bistability and hysteresis. A remarkable consequence of the discrete time-translation symmetry is revealed by studying the vibration phases. We find that the phase fluctuations of the two modes are nearly perfectly anti-correlated. At the same time, in each mode the phase undergoes anomalous diffusion, where the time dependence of the phase variance follows a superlinear rather than the standard linear power law. Our analysis shows that the exponent of the power law is determined by the exponent of the 1/f-type intrinsic frequency noise of the resonator. We demonstrate the possibility of compensating for these fluctuations using a feedback scheme to generate stable oscillations that could prove useful in frequency standards and resonant detection., Comment: 27 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Two-dimensional lattices of chiral nanoholes in a plasmonic film with lattice constants being slightly larger than light wavelength are proposed for effective control of polarization and spatial properties of light beams. Effective polarization conversion and strong circular dichroism in non-zero diffraction orders in these chiral metafilms are demonstrated by electromagnetic simulations. These interesting effects are found to result from interplay between radiation pattern of single chiral nanohole and diffraction pattern of the planar lattice, and can be manipulated by varying wavelength and polarization of incoming light as well as period of metastructure and refractive indexes of substrate and overlayer. Therefore, this work offers a novel paradigm for developing planar chiral metafilm-based optical devices with controllable polarization state, spatial orientation and intensity of outgoing light.

Abstract

Rogue waves (RWs) are unexpectedly strong excitations emerging from an otherwise tranquil background. The nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (NLSE), a ubiquitous model with wide applications to fluid mechanics, optics and plasmas, exhibits RWs only in the regime of modulation instability (MI) of the background. For system of multiple waveguides, the governing coupled NLSEs can produce regimes of MI and RWs, even if each component has dispersion and cubic nonlinearity of opposite signs. A similar effect will be demonstrated for a system of coupled derivative NLSEs (DNLSEs), where the special feature is the nonlinear self-steepening of narrow pulses. More precisely, these additional regimes of MI and RWs for coupled DNLSEs will depend on the mismatch in group velocities between the components, as well as the parameters for cubic nonlinearity and self-steepening. RWs considered in this work differ from those of the NLSEs in terms of the amplification ratio and criteria of existence. Abstract

Pain is both a major clinical and economic problem, affecting more people than diabetes, heart disease, and cancer combined. While a variety of prescribed or over-the-counter (OTC) medications are available for pain management, opioid medications, especially those acting on the μ-opioid receptor (μOR) and related pathways, have proven to be the most effective, despite some serious side effects including respiration depression, pruritus, dependence, and constipation. It is therefore imperative that both academia and industry develop novel μOR analgesics which retain their opioid analgesic properties but with fewer or no adverse effects. In this review we outline recent progress towards the discovery of safer opioid analgesics.

77. Work fluctuations in a nonlinear micromechanical oscillator driven far from thermal equilibrium

Abstract

We explore fluctuation relations in a periodically driven micromechanical torsional oscillator. In the linear regime where the modulation is weak, we verify that the ratio of the work variance to the mean work is constant, consistent with conventional fluctuation theorems. We then increase the amplitude of the periodic drive so that the response becomes nonlinear and two nonequilibrium oscillation states coexist. Due to interstate transitions, the work variance exhibits a peak at the driving frequency at which the occupation of the two states is equal. Moreover, the work fluctuations depend exponentially on the inverse noise intensity. Our data are consistent with recent theories on systems driven into bistability that predict generic behaviors different from conventional fluctuation theorems., Comment: To appear in Phys.Rev.E

78. Optimising the use and assessing the value of intraoperative shear wave elastography in neurosurgery

Abstract

The clinical outcomes for epilepsy and brain tumour surgery depend on the extent of resection. Neurosurgeons frequently rely on subjective assessment of stiffness and adherence to achieve maximal resection. However, due to similarity in tactile texture and visual appearance of these lesions to normal brain, this can lead to inadequate resection. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has not completely solved this problem for various reasons, including the existence of MRI-negative lesions. Shear wave elastography (SWE) is an ultrasound-based quantitative elasticity imaging technique that provides an objective assessment of stiffness, which has not previously been applied intraoperatively during neurosurgery. This thesis describes the optimisation and assessment of implementing intraoperative SWE in neurosurgery. The aims of the work described in this thesis were to validate SWE measurements; to optimise intraoperative applications by investigating the artefacts of SWE; to evaluate SWE performance in detecting epileptogenic lesions, residual tumour and slippery boundaries; and to determine the histopathological correlation with SWE measurements. Using gelatine phantoms and post-mortem mouse brains, SWE measurements were validated. Through phantom models and ex vivo porcine brains and spinal cords, the factors affecting SWE measurements were established and SWE settings optimised. In addition, novel features of slippery tumour-brain interface were demonstrated in vitro and confirmed intraoperatively. Clinical implementation of SWE in epilepsy (38 patients) and brain tumour surgery (34 patients), demonstrated SWE’s capability in differentiating epileptogenic lesions (p < 0.001) and brain tumours (p=0.003) from normal brain. SWE was shown to be superior to MRI in detecting epileptogenic lesions (p=0.001), in particular MRI-negative cases where SWE managed to demonstrate lesions in 4 cases with positive histology. For detecting residual tumour, SWE was shown to be superior to surgeons’ opinion (p=0.001), and similar to MRI (p=1.000) and intraoperative B-mode ultrasound (p=0.727). Histopathologically, there was no correlation with SWE measurements, except for proliferation (p=0.007). In conclusion, this thesis demonstrated potential patient benefit of integrating intraoperative SWE into neurosurgical practice, and therefore, a compelling reason to continue development and optimisation of this technology.

Abstract

Human purinergic G protein-coupled receptor P2Y1 (P2Y1 R) is activated by adenosine 5-diphosphate (ADP) to induce platelet activation and thereby serves as an important antithrombotic drug target. Crystal structures of P2Y1 R revealed that one ligand (MRS2500) binds to the extracellular vestibule of this GPCR, whereas another (BPTU) occupies the surface between transmembrane (TM) helices TM2 and TM3. We introduced a total of 20 μs all-atom long-timescale molecular dynamic (MD) simulations to inquire why two molecules in completely different locations both serve as antagonists while ADP activates the receptor. Our results indicate that BPTU acts as an antagonist by stabilizing extracellular helix bundles leading to an increase of the lipid order, whereas MRS2500 blocks signaling by occupying the ligand binding site. Both antagonists stabilize an ionic lock within the receptor. However, binding of ADP breaks this ionic lock, forming a continuous water channel that leads to P2Y1 R activation.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all domains of human life, including the economic and social fabric of societies. One of the central strategies for managing public health throughout the pandemic has been through persuasive messaging and collective behaviour change. To help scholars better understand the social and moral psychology behind public health behaviour, we present a dataset comprising of 51,404 individuals from 69 countries. This dataset was collected for the International Collaboration on Social & Moral Psychology of COVID-19 project (ICSMP COVID-19). This social science survey invited participants around the world to complete a series of moral and psychological measures and public health attitudes about COVID-19 during an early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic (between April and June 2020). The survey included seven broad categories of questions: COVID-19 beliefs and compliance behaviours; identity and social attitudes; ideology; health and well-being; moral beliefs and motivation; personality traits; and demographic variables. We report both raw and cleaned data, along with all survey materials, data visualisations, and psychometric evaluations of key variables.

Abstract

Epitaxial Mn-doped BiFeO3 (MBFO) thin films were grown on GaAs (001) substrate with SrTiO3 (STO) buffer layer by pulsed laser deposition. X-ray diffraction results demonstrate that the films show pure (00l) orientation, and MBFO(100)//STO(100), whereas STO (100)//GaAs (110). Piezoresponse force microscopy images and polarization versus electric field loops indicate that the MBFO films grown on GaAs have an effective ferroelectric switching. The MBFO films exhibit good ferroelectric behavior (2Pr ~ 92 {\mu}C/cm2 and 2EC ~ 372 kV/cm). Ferromagnetic property with saturated magnetization of 6.5 emu/cm3 and coercive field of about 123 Oe is also found in the heterostructure at room temperature., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Silicon-based micro and nanoparticles have gained popularity in a wide range of biomedical applications due to their biocompatibility and biodegradability in-vivo, as well as a flexible surface chemistry, which allows drug loading, functionalization and targeting. Here we report direct in-vivo imaging of hyperpolarized 29Si nuclei in silicon microparticles by MRI. Natural physical properties of silicon provide surface electronic states for dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP), extremely long depolarization times, insensitivity to the in-vivo environment or particle tumbling, and surfaces favorable for functionalization. Potential applications to gastrointestinal, intravascular, and tumor perfusion imaging at sub-picomolar concentrations are presented.
