The present investigation was carried out to study the efficacy of different novel insecticides and bio-pesticides against stem borer Scirpophaga incertulus (Walker) during kharif 2015-16 at Crop Research Centre of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel University of Agriculture and Technology, Meerut. Efficacy of newer insecticides (fipronil 5 SC, cartap hydrochloride 50SP,chlorpyriphos 20 EC, imidacloprid), one biopesticide (Neemarin 1500 ppm) and one bio-control agent (Trichogramma japonicum) were evaluated against yellow stem borer Scirpophaga incertulas (Walk.) in Basmati rice. The stem borer recorded as dead heart ear heads ranged from 4.85 to 10.55 per cent and white ear head showed that it was recorded on 38th standard weak. All the treatments were found significantly effective in reducing the infestation of stem borer and increasing the yield compared with control. Application of fipronil 5 SC was the most effective treatment in reducing the stem borer infestation at all observational interval resulting highest grain yield The results of paddy yield depicted in table 3, showed that the plots treated with fipronil 0.3 GR @ 25 kg/ha gave the highest yield (45.56 q/ha).

The study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of different management practices to control tomato fruit borer (TFB) under field condition. The field experiment was carried out with eight treatments, namely Neem oil, Mahogany oil, Fish and Fermented Gur (brown sugar), Netting, Chlorpyriphos, Emamectin Benzoate and Cartap along with untreated control in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) and each treatment was replicated thrice. The study was under taken during the period from 25 October, 2017 to 06 April 2018. Data were collected on number and weight of total fruits plot-1, number and weight of total healthy fruits plot-1, number and weight of total infested fruits plot-1, fruits infestation (%) in number and weight, infestation reduction over control for number and weight, number of holes, and larvae plot-1, total yield plot-1 and marketable yield plot-1. Among the different management practices, netting provided the highest infestation reduction over control. The percent fruit infestation reduction over control (number basis) was the highest in Netting treated plot resulting 61.87%, 73.27%, 84.68% and 92.70% at four different harvests, respectively. The percent fruit infestation reduction over control (weight basis) was the highest with the same treatment resulting 61.38%, 74.26%, 88.41% and 91.71% at four different harvests, respectively. The number of holes plot-1 was also the lowest in Netting treated plot resulting 5.00, 8.00, 15.33 and 8.67 at four different harvests, respectively. The number of larvae plot-1 was the lowest with the same treatment resulting 2.00, 2.33, 3.67 and 3.00 at four different harvests, respectively. The maximum marketable yield (33.95 t ha-1) was achieved in the Emamectin Benzoate treated plot with the highest (1.46) benefit cost ratio. Bangladesh J. Agril. Res. 44(2): 339-353, June 2019

Insecticide cartap hydrochloride (C) was fabricated as nanospheres by a two-step method of ionic gelification and polyelectrolyte complexation of alginate (ALG) and chitosan (CS) to undermine its adverse effects on environment. Nanospheres were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectra and x-ray diffraction. The size of cartap hydrochloride entrapped chitosan alginate nanospheres (C-CS-ALG nps) was in range of 107.58–173.07 nm. Cartap hydrochloride nanospheres showed encapsulation efficiency of 76.19% and were stable for 30 d at ambient temperature. Release of cartap from nanospheres fitted best with first order linear kinetics followed by Hixson and Higuchi model suggesting super case II transport release. With the application of such control release nanoformulations, it is possible to reduce the frequency of field application of insecticide due to its slow release to the target organism, which is economical as well as environmentally safe.

A method was developed for the simultaneous determination of four nereistoxin-related pesticides, viz. cartap, thiocyclam, thiosultap-monosodium, and thiosultap-disodium, in 20 plant foods. The samples were extracted using a hydrochloric acid solution containing cysteine hydrochloride, derivatized to nereistoxin under alkaline conditions, and analyzed by gas chromatography with electron capture detector. The average recoveries of the method were 72-108%, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 0.3-14.7% (n = 1200, p 0.05). The intermediate precision and reproducibility experiments using established methods were also carried out. All the results passed the Cochrane and Grubbs tests (n = 2400, p 0.05). The RSDs of intermediate precision and RSDs of reproducibility among laboratories were in the ranges 1.7-10.9% and 2.4-15.3% (n = 2400, p 0.05), respectively, indicating that the accuracy and precision of the method are satisfactory. This method can be used to detect nereistoxin-related pesticides in plant foods.

Aloe vera has been the most useful medicinal herb in the world since ancient times due to its vast biological effects. The presence of high content of bioactive compounds make Aloe vera a promising complementary and alternative agent in disease prevention. The effectiveness of A. vera-based medicines against pesticide toxicity has never been evaluated. It was therefore envisaged to develop an A. vera-based strategy to protect the non-target animals from adverse effects of the pesticides. This article illustrates the ameliorating effect of aqueous extract (AE) of A. vera leaves against the cartap and malathion toxicity. To evaluate the protective impact of A. vera against cartap (Ctp), malathion (Mtn) and a mixture of both pesticides, the animals were divided in eight groups, each containing six rats: Group 1- C (control), Group 2- AE + C, Group 3- Ctp, Group 4- Mtn, Group 5- Ctp + Mtn, Group 6- AE + Ctp, Group 7- AE + Mtn, Group 8- AE + Ctp + Mtn. Wistar rats exposed to Ctp, Mtn and Ctp + Mtn, displayed significant change in body weight. It was observed that the WBC level increased significantly in Mtn and Ctp + Mtn challenged groups. The contents of TNF-&alpha, and IL-6 in serum increased expressively in the Ctp, Mtn and Ctp + Mtn challenged groups. Rats treated with Ctp, Mtn and Ctp + Mtn displayed significant alterations in the levels of antioxidative indices (MDA, GSH, GST, GPx, SOD and CAT). Significant alterations were recorded in the activities of AST, ALT, ACP and ALP in Ctp, Mtn and Ctp + Mtn challenged groups. The histopathological results of liver supported the biochemical data. The pre-treatment of rats with the aqueous extract of A. vera leaves significantly protected them from the toxicity of pesticides. These results suggested that A. vera extract may be used as a promising natural agent for the management of pesticide induced toxicity.

A high photoluminescence sensor based on functionalized room temperature ionic liquid-strengthened sulfur-doped carbon nanodots (IL-strengthened S-Cdots) is developed by a one-pot strategy. It facilitates real-time monitoring of cartap (CP) by a turn-off photoluminescence signal. The introduction of the ionic liquid 1-vinyl-3-butylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (VBimBF4B) is beneficial to improve the photoluminescence quantum yield and stability of the photoluminescence sensor. VBimBF4B also uses methacrylic acid as the selected receptor to recognize cartap by the specific interaction of hydrogen bonding. The fluorescent response for cartap detection has a linear range between 1 μg L−1 and 100 μg L−1, and the detection limit is 0.86 μg L−1. The photoluminescence sensor shows better selectivity for cartap compared with other interference components. The developed method has been used for optosensing of cartap in complex food matrices, such as Chinese cabbage, cabbage, rapeseed, apple and pear, with a recovery of 78–99% and an observed RSD of 0.7–2.1% for three replicate measurements. These findings indicate the excellent ability of the prepared IL-strengthened S-Cdots to recognize cartap in complex food matrices and the potential of this method for application in cartap detection.

Cartap is a carbamate insecticide intended to protect crops such as rice, tea, and sugarcane. Cartap in the environment presents a serious threat to non-target organisms through direct exposure or via biomagnification. Electro-assisted Fenton technology taps the potential of Fenton reagents to degrade cartap. Electrochemical reduction of iron accelerates catalyst regeneration. Cartap degradation was first investigated by varying reaction pH, as well as the initial H2O2 and Fe2+ dosage, followed by optimization studies using central composite design. Parametric results indicate the highest cartap removal of 98.10% was achieved at 1.6 pH, 3.0 mM Fe2+, and 40 mM H2O2 at I = 1.0 A and t = 30 min. These results notoriously surpass conventional Fenton that only achieved 53.8% cartap removal under similar conditions. The hybridization of Fenton process through electrochemical regeneration enhances removal and increases degradation kinetic up to a pseudo-first-order rate constant value of 21.30 × 10–4 s−1. Effects of coexisting inorganic salts PO43–, NO3–, and Cl– at 1 mM and 10 mM concentrations were investigated. These results demonstrate that Fenton electrification as process intensification alternative can enhance the performance and competitiveness of conventional Fenton by ensuring higher availability of iron catalyst while minimizing sludge production.

In this study, we explore ligand exchange reactions on citrate-gold nanoparticles (citrate-Au NPs) for facile and rapid parallel colorimetric identification of six pesticides including three organophosphorus pesticides (acephate, phenthoate, and profenofos), neonicotinoid (acetamiprid), chloronitrile (chlorothalonil) and thiocarbamate (cartap) in water and vegetable samples. The citrate-Au NPs acted as probes for a parallel colorimetric assay of six pesticides based on the significant red-shifts in their surface plasmon resonance (SPR) bands, which was due to the aggregation of Au NPs via ligand exchange reactions. Under optical conditions, the probe exhibited good linearity in the micromolar concentration range for the six pesticides. Importantly, the sensing system showed lower detection limits at nanomolar range for the six pesticides and exhibited good selectivity in the presence of commonly found inorganic species. The potential of the method was assessed by analyzing six pesticides in spiked water and food samples, which suggested that this simple method exhibited good recoveries and can be practically applied in on-site and real-time parallel colorimetric sensing of the six pesticides.

Cartap applied widely in agricultural crops and tea plants is readily degraded into nereistoxin, resulting in a longer residual period and higher exposure risk to humans. The photolysis kinetics of cartap and nereistoxin in water and tea beverages was firstly investigated to explore the effect and mechanism of pesticide residue removal. Cartap and nereistoxin could be effectively photolyzed by ultraviolet and their photolysis rate increased with light intensity increasing. The photolysis percentage of cartap and nereistoxin in different solutions under ultraviolet irradiation of 200 W mercury lamp reached 81.8%-100.0% within 6 h. Relative to water solution, the water-soluble components in tea had an inhibition effect on the photodegradation of cartap and nereistoxin. This research provided a reference for the development of effective methods for the removal of cartap and its metabolite in water and tea beverages.

In order to aid the integration of biological and chemical controls for the tomato leaf miner, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), this study evaluated the relative toxicity of five insecticides to the leaf miner predator Macrolophus basicornis (Stal) (Hemiptera: Miridae). The insecticides evaluated were teflubenzuron, abamectin, chlorantraniliprole, chlorfenapyr, and cartap hydrochloride, all of which are recommended for control of T. absoluta in Brazil. Nymphs and adults of M. basicornis were exposed to tomato leaves treated with the insecticides, under laboratory and greenhouse conditions. The overall mortality caused by the products in both situations was recorded, and the survival of congeneric groups was analysed using the Weibull model. The persistence of the insecticides was also evaluated and they were categorised into toxicity classes proposed by the International Organisation for Biological Control (IOBC) based on predator mortality and persistence. Rice is the staple food of over half the world's population and occupies almost one-fifth of the global cropland under cereals. The rice root weevil, Echinocnemus oryzae Marshall, (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) has posed a problem in paddy cultivation areas in India. The damage by this root weevil results in a significant decrease in root and shoot biomass and ultimately the yield of rice plants. Studies were conducted to test the effective management practices of rice root weevil using a seedling treatment with chlorpyriphos alone and in combination with a soil application of chlorpyriphos, fipronil and cartap hydrochloride during 2013 and 2014. The benefit:cost (B:C) ratio was also determined from the marketable yield and cost of treatments incurred in the technology to justify the economic viability of the appropriate technology management against E. oryzae. Reductions in tillers/hill (35.2% and 26.27%) and, in panicles/hill (44.0% and 31.96%) were observed during 2013 and 2014, respectively. The least number of root weevils (3.67 and 3.13) were observed in comparison to no root weevil management practice (23.53 and 32.53) during 2013 and 2014, respectively, from the treatment of seedlings prior to transplanting with chlorpyriphos at 3 mL/L of water followed by soil application with cartap hydrochloride at 20 kg/ha. The highest numbers of tillers/hill (25.00 and 23.60), numbers of panicles/hill (20.00 and 19.40), yield (5.41 t/ha and 4.57 t/ha) and B:C ratio (1.75 and 1.48) were also observed from the same treatment during 2013 and 2014, respectively.

Yellow stem borer Scirpophaga insertulas (Walker) devastated the rice crop in both vegetative and reproductive growth stages during monsoon and summer seasons of West Bengal. A field trial was conducted for evaluating the efficacy of pheromone lure against rice yellow stem borer in farmers’ fields under Gopalpur co-operative society, Burdwan during rainy 2011-2013. The field trials consisted of six treatments including control viz. T1= 50 pheromone traps/ha installed at 10 DAT where lure was not replaced, T2= 50 pheromone traps/ha installed at 10 DAT and lure replaced at 45 DAT, T3= 50 pheromone traps/ha installed at 10 DAT and lure replaced at 45 and 60 DAT, T4= 80 Exosex YSBtab per hectare @ 20 mg installed at 15 DAT, T5= as per farmers practice where cartap hydrochloride @ 750 g a.i/ha used at 45 and 60 DAT and T6= untreated control. Here both the dispenser (lure) and Exosex YSBTab containing (Z)-11 hexadecinal and (Z)-9 hexadecinal at 3:1 ratio was used. This experiment, resulted that the two peaks were found (27th August and 1st October) during rainy season. The Exosex YSBTab @ 20 mg had significantly exhibited minimum oviposition by female as well as significantly managed the yellow stem borer as compared to other pheromone treatments.

There are few studies for risk assessment of cartap and its metabolites, although cartap is easily transformed into metabolites which could induce higher toxicity. This study aimed to investigate the dissipation pattern of cartap and its metabolites during tea planting, manufacturing and brewing for evaluating the safety of cartap pesticide. Cartap metabolites were identified using Q-Exactive Orbitrap mass spectrometry. Half-lives of cartap in fresh tea leaves ranged from 0.49 to 0.59 days. Cartap decreased rapidly with time, and it was degraded into nereistoxin and cartap monothiol during tea production chain. Cartap monothiol residues dissipated rapidly by 98% in three days during tea planting. Nereistoxin had a longer residual period than cartap and it dominated the total residue in made tea after tea manufacturing. Transfer rates of nereistoxin during tea brewing ranged from 78.24% to 121.56%. Therefore, we suggested sum of cartap and nereistoxin residues as maximum residual limits in tea.

Insecticidal usage in the rice farming system may affect non-target insect species present in the same fields. Musca domestica, a well-known pest of medical and veterinary importance worldwide, is one of the important non-target insect species present in the rice farming system. In this study, five strains of M. domestica were exclusively collected from rice fields in major rice cultivated areas of Punjab, Pakistan, and evaluated for the presence of insecticide resistance against nine commonly used insecticides in the rice farming system. Moreover, the performance of life-history traits was also studied. Compared with a Lab-susceptible reference strain of M. domestica, all the field strains exhibited moderate levels of resistance to carbofuran (RRs = 27.96–46.00 fold) and cartap hydrochloride (RRs = 31.48–48.21 fold), low to moderate levels of resistance to gamma-cyhalothrin (RRs = 19.00–43.00 fold), chlorantraniliprole (RRs = 11.90–27.10 fold), monomehypo (RRs = 14.38–25.84 fold), and fipronil (RRs = 13.23–40.15 fold), low levels of resistance to triazophos (RRs = 11.13–19.83 fold), and very low to low levels of resistance (RRs = 7.83–13.28 fold) to flonicamid. The performance of life-history traits (developmental time, adult eclosion rate, fecundity, egg hatch rate, and longevity of adults) of field strains was weaker as compared with that of the Lab-susceptible strain. These results contribute to the growing knowledge on the effects of insecticidal usage in agriculture on non-target invertebrates, and necessitate the need to explore alternate insecticides that can effectively control insect pests but safe for non-target organisms.

This dissertation describes electrochemical oxidation of Padan 95 SP on Boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode mainly by •OH radicals (which was measured by indirect method, i.e: the formation of 2-Hydroxylterephthalic acid (2-HTA)), Electro-Fenton and the combination with adsorption technology for increasing total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency. In this study, the formation of 2-HTA on BDD electrode via the reaction between terephthalic acid (TA) and •OH as a method to quantify hydroxyl radical formation was investigated. The degradation of Cartap in Padan 95SP (95 % Cartap) on BDD was investigated. Operating parameters such as applied current density, types of electrolyte and initial concentration of Padan 95SP were varied in order to determine their effect on the degradation efficiency of Cartap. The concentration of Cartap was determined by UV-Vis spectroscopy according to 5,5-Dithiobis-(2-nitrobenzoic acid) (DTNB) procedure. High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) were used to characterize the commercial Padan 95SP and the formation of by-products. The optimal conditions for Cartap degradation by electrochemical process have been established: concentration of electrolyte: 0.05 M Na2SO4, initial concentration of Padan 95SP: 300 mg·L-1, pH = 3, current density: j = 20 mA·cm-2. At this condition, Cartap decreases to 41 %, TOC decay reaches 8 %. To increase TOC decay at higher Padan 95 SP concentration in aqueous solution, the combination technique of electrochemical process with other techniques was proposed, e.g.: Electro-Fenton technique, pre-oxidizing by NaOCl or the Electro-Adsorption combination. In the Electro-Fenton technique, we investigated the influence of factors such as the presence of NaOCl in pretreatment of process, affects of H2O2 concentration, Fe2+ dosage, co-catalysts metals ion and pH. The efficiency shows approximately 80 % of TOC removed at 700 mg·L-1 Padan 95 SP. The combination of electrochemical with adsorption method shows the efficient removals of TOC and Padan 95SP (95 % Cartap) based on reagents oxidation in electrochemical process and adsorption of granular activated carbon (GAC), respectively. The influence of factors such as supporting electrolytes, flow rate, bed height, recycling number as well as initial concentration were investigated in order to determine their effects on TOC removal. The efficiency of this combination shows approximately 75 % of TOC and more than 90 % of Cartap removed at 700 mg·L-1 Padan 95 SP. Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) and (Brunauer–Emmett–Teller) BET surface analysis were applied to investigate GAC before and after usage. The results have shown that the application of electrochemical technique with other methods can be the potential option for treatment of wastewater containing Padan 95 SP. Diese Dissertation befasst sich mit der Reduktion des gesamten organischen Kohlenstoffs (TOC) aus wässriger Lösung, die Padan 95 SP enthält. Als Methoden zur Minimierung von TOC wurden die elektrochemische Oxidation von Padan 95 SP auf Bor-dotierter Diamant (BDD) Elektroden durch •OH Radikale, Elektro-Fenton und die Kombination mit Adsorptionstechnologien verwendet. Die •OH Radikale wurden dabei durch indirekte Methoden, z. B. die Bildung von 2-HTA gemessen. Zur Quantifizierung der Hydroxylradikalbildung wurde in dieser Studie die Bildung von 2-Hydroxylterephthalsäure (2-HTA) an BDD-Elektroden über die Reaktion zwischen Terephthalsäure (TA) und •OH untersucht. Weiterhin befasst sich die Arbeit mit dem Abbau von Cartap in Padan 95SP (95% Cartap) auf BDD über die Reaktion zwischen Cartap und Hydroxylradikalen. Betriebsparameter wie die angewandte Stromdichte, die Elektrolytarten und die Anfangskonzentration von Padan 95SP wurden variiert, um ihre Wirkung auf die Abbaueffizienz von Cartap zu bestimmen. Die Konzentration von Cartap wurde mittels UV-Vis-Spektroskopie mit dem 5,5-Dithiobis-(2-Nitrobenzoesäure) (DTNB) Verfahren bestimmt. Hochleistungs-Flüssigkeitschromatographie (HPLC) und Gaschromatographie/Massenspektrometrie (GC-MS) wurden verwendet, um das kommerziell erhältliche Padan 95SP und die Bildung von Nebenprodukten beim Abbau von Cartap zu charakterisieren. Die optimalen Bedingungen für die Cartap-Degradation durch den elektrochemischen Prozess wurden festgelegt: Konzentration des Elektrolyten: 0.05 M Na2SO4, Padan 95SP Anfangskonzentration: 300 mg·L-1, pH = 3, Stromdichte: j = 20 mA·cm-2. Unter diesen Bedingungen sinkt Cartap auf 41% und der TOC erreicht 8 % des jeweiligen Ausgangswertes. Um den TOC-Zerfall bei höher Padan 95 SP Konzentration in Wasser zu erhöhen, wurde die Kombination des elektrochemischen Prozesses mit anderen Techniken vorgeschlagen, z.B.: Elektro-Fenton-Technik, Oxidation mit NaOCl, oder die Kombination des elektrochemischen Prozesses mit einem Adsorptionsprozess. Bei der Elektro-Fenton-Technik wurde der Einfluss von Faktoren wieder Anwesenheit von NaOCl in der Prozessvorbehandlung, Auswirkungen der H2O2-Konzentration, Fe2+-Dosierung, Metallionen als Cokatalysatoren und der pH-Wert der Lösung untersucht, um die Wirkung auf die Abbau-Effizienz für Cartap zu bestimmen. Es konnten mit dieser Methode rund 80 % TOC, ausgehend von 700 mg·L-1Padan 95SP, entfernt werden. Die Kombination des elektrochemischen Prozesses mit einer Adsorptionsmethode ermöglicht eine effiziente Entfernung von TOC und Padan 95SP (95% Cartap). Dies basiert auf der Oxidation und anschließender Adsorption auf granularer Aktivkohle (GAC). Der Einfluss von Faktoren wie Leitelektrolyten, Flussrate, Betthöhe, Recyclingzahl sowie die Anfangskonzentration von Padan 95 SP wurde untersucht, um deren Auswirkungen auf die TOC Entfernung zu bestimmen. Durch die Kombination konnten so 75% desTOC und mehr als 90% Cartap bei 700 mg·L-1Padan 95 SP entfernt werden. Fourier-Transformations-Infrarot (FT-IR) und BET-Oberflächenanalyse wurden angewendet, um GAC vor und nach der Verwendung zu untersuchen. Die Ergebnisse haben gezeigt, dass die Kombination des elektrochemischen Prozesses mit anderen Methoden eine potentielle Option für die Behandlung von Abwasser, das Padan 95 SP enthält, sein kann.

Cartap hydrochloride is a mildly perilous insecticide known as "Padan" which is used largely in agricultural farms to control weevil and caterpillars. The over use of cartap causes harmful effects on human health. Since the blood may acts as a target and carrier for insecticides, the effect of these compounds on blood in mammalian toxicology is very important. Hemoglobin is a tetramer protein that play critical role in oxygen transport. The aim of this study was to analyze and compare the function and structural changes of hemoglobin in the presence of different concentrations of cartap by employing different spectroscopic techniques. The obtained results show that cartap has a high hemolytic effect which is increased with cartap concentration and reduces the thermal midpoint of hemoglobin. Fluorescence measurements reveal heme degradation at different concentrations of cartap. In consequence of theoretical and experimental results, cartap has an undesirable effect on hemoglobin structure and function.

Cartap hydrochloride is a moderately hazardous nereistoxin analogue insecticide that is predominantly applied in paddy fields of India, at a recommended dose of 10 μg ml−1 to kill chewing and sucking insect pests of rice crop. Toxicity of cartap hydrochloride was studied on non-target free-living nitrogen fixing cyanobacterium Anabaena variabilis ARM 441 commonly used as algal biofertilizer in rice cultivation. Anabaena sp. could tolerate commercial grade insecticide up to 30 μg ml−1. However, at the recommended dose of 10 μg ml−1, it caused reduction in algal growth, total nitrogen and heterocyst frequency by 47.28, 24.29 and 17.72% respectively, as well as photosynthetic pigments under pure culture conditions. Scanning electron micrographs revealed cell rupture and breakage in filaments due to cartap exposure with the formation of akinetes. Cartap hydrochloride induced stress, since level of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase and catalase were increased by 108.57, 187.5 and 117% respectively. Generation of superoxide radicals and hydrogen peroxide were also increased by 152.48 and 34% respectively. Lipid peroxidation was increased by 31.03%, whereas there was decline in ascorbate content by 48.45%, however the glutathione content was increased by 128.57%. Increase in osmolytes such as proline from 8.6 to 32.8% and sucrose from 61.22 to 90.13% indicates their possible role in overcoming cartap induced oxidative stress and can be helpful in assessing its detrimental effect on Anabaena variabilis ARM 441, since cyanobacterial biofertilizers are purposely used in paddy fields as nitrogen contributors.

Aromatic compounds can be efficiently degraded using boron-doped diamond (BDD) anodes by the anodic oxidation based on the generation of hydroxyl radicals (•OH). In this study, the degradation of Cartap in Padan 95SP (a pesticide) by BDD via the reaction between Cartap and oxidizing species (such as hydroxyl radicals, active chlorine, and persulfate) was investigated. Operating parameters including applied current density, the types of electrolyte, and the initial concentration of Padan 95SP were studied in order to determine their effect on the degradation efficiency of Cartap. The concentration of Cartap was determined by UV–Vis spectroscopy according to a 5,5-Dithiobis-(2-nitrobenzoic acid) procedure. The optimal conditions for Cartap degradation were determined (concentration of electrolyte: 0.05 M Na2SO4, initial concentration of Padan 95SP of 300 mg·L−1, pH = 3, current density: j = 20 mA·cm−2). High Performance Liquid Chromatography and Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry techniques were used to characterize commercially available Padan 95SP, the decomposition of Cartap and the formation of electrochemical by-products.

The soybean looper Chrysodeixis includens (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a pest of the soya bean, and increasing populations have been observed on several crops in Brazil. Control of this pest is accomplished using insecticides, particularly with new products recently launched in the market. The effectiveness of these insecticides against C. includens and their impact on natural enemies need further study. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the toxicity of nine insecticides for C. includens and their effects on the Blaptostethus pallescens. Toxicity was increased via the addition of an insecticide synergist, and behavioural changes in Blaptostethus pallescens, an anthocorid predator of C. includens, were assessed. Except for acephate, all other insecticides showed high toxicity to C. includens (mortality >80%). The estimated lethal time (LT50) for C. includens was shorter for methomyl, cartap and spinosad than others six insecticides tested in this work. Chlorantraniliprole, chlorfenapyr, deltamethrin, flubendiamide, indoxacarb and spinosad showed selectivity for the predator B. pallescens and exhibited a lower toxicity to the predator than to C. includens. The detoxifying enzymes monooxygenase and glutathione S-transferase may be involved in the selectivity mechanisms of these insecticides for the predator based on the results obtained with the synergized insecticides. Only the insecticides cartap, indoxacarb and spinosad changed the behaviour of the predator B. pallescens. These three insecticides are repellent, and the predator avoids them. However, the predator tended to remain on the surface treated with flubendiamide longer. Our results suggest that the insecticides chlorfenapyr, chlorantraniliprole, flubendiamide, spinosad and indoxacarb are the most promising compounds for use against C. includens. These compounds also preserve populations of B. pallescens and allow more sustainable integrated pest management programmes.

Tomato severe rugose virus (ToSRV) is a serious and prevalent begomovirus that causes severe mosaic and yield loss of tomato plants in Brazil. The virus is transmitted by Bemisia tabaci bitotype B (MEAM1) in a persistent circulative manner. This study evaluated the efficacy of cyantraniliprole foliar spray, cyantraniliprole root drenching, spiromesifen, thiamethoxam, and cartap on the mortality of Bemisia tabaci byotipe B and simulated primary and secondary transmission of ToSRV. None of the insecticides were effective in controlling primary transmission of ToSRV by B. tabaci. Cyantraniliprole root drenching, cartap, and cyantraniliprole foliar spray were effective in controlling secondary transmission of the virus, and infections were reduced by 94.5, 89.6, and 81%, respectively, compared to each of their controls. Thiamethoxam and spiromesifen did not provide effective control of secondary infection. Elimination of external sources of inoculum before starting new plantings and rational use of insecticides to reduce secondary infection may contribute to better disease management of tomato crops.

Cultivation of banana in modified high density planting systems with more crop cycles is widely followed in Gujarath, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu states of India due to its higher productivity and lower cost of production. In this system, three suckers were planted in a pit spaced at 1.8 × 3.6 m accommodating 1542 mats or 4626 plants/ha. Nematode pests remain a threat to this modified system of banana cultivation especially in ratoon cycles. Investigations were undertaken in ratoon banana grown under a high density planting system on effect of cartap hydrochloride 4G, carbofuran 3G, Glomus mosseae, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Sunhemp, Coriander, Marigold, and neem cake on control mixed populations of burrowing nematode, Radopholus similis, and spiral nematode, Helicotylenchus multicinctus. Insecticidal resistance studies against third instar larvae of DBM (Plutella xylostella L.) were carried out to know the rate of development of resistance from F1 to F3 generations in Karnataka population. The third instar larvae obtained from field were subjected to bioassay studies with tested against acephate, cypermethrin, spinosad, cartap hydrochloride and Cry2Ab toxin using leaf dip method to calculate LC50 values. The LC50 values of the insecticides were further used to quantify the resistance in P. xylostella of parental generation (F0) from Karnataka field population. The survivals from F0 generation were reared to next generation (F1). Resistance development studies was assessed from F1 to F3 generation with third instar larvae in every generation with a concentration that caused 80.00 % mortality for all the test insecticides and Cry2Ab toxin. Results revealed that ((0.17 folds) no resistance was developed against acephate in F3 generation. In case of cypermethrin 2.33 folds. Resistance studies further revealed that 1.50 folds resistance was developed against spinosad, 2.28 folds against cartap hydrochloride and Cry2Ab toxin 1.49 folds resistance was recorded in F3 generation. The rate of development of resistance from F1 to F3 generations increased in all the test insecticides and Cry toxin, except against acephate in Karnataka population. This data will be useful in the development of insecticide resistance management approach for DBM.

Experiments were conducted at farmer’s cabbage fields to evaluate the bioefficacy of anthranilic insecticide i.e. E2Y45 20 SC (Chlorantraniliprole) having novel mode of action against the diamondback moth Plutella xylostella L. E2Y45 20 SC was applied @ 25.0, 37.5 and 50.0 ml/ha and was compared with Padan 50 SP (cartap hydrochloride) @ 500 g/ha and the untreated control. Lowest mean larval population after two sprays was recorded in higher dose of E2Y 45 20 SC i.e. @ 50.0 ml/ha (0.08 larvae/plant) at 7 days after treatment followed by medium and lower dose of E2Y 45 20 SC i.e. @ 37.5ml/ha (0.10 larvae/plant) and 25.0 ml/ha (0.33 larvae/plant). The larval population in these treatments was significantly lower than standard check, Padan 50 SP (2.56 larvae/plant), and untreated control (9.73 larvae/plant). The highest marketable yield (262.89 q/ha) was recorded in E2Y 45 20 SC @ 50.0 ml/ha which was significantly higher than Padan 50 SP (239.65 q/ha). Lowest yields were recorded in untreated control (106.00 q/ha). Conclusively, medium (37.5 ml/ha) and higher (50.0 ml/ha) dose of E2Y 45 20 SC (chlorantraniliprole) significantly reduced the larval population of P. xylostella and increased the cabbage yield.

The coffee crop requires great spray ability to penetrate into the plant canopy during the application of pesticides. The aim of this study was to evaluate the spray deposition on leaves of coffee plants and the chemical control of the leaf miner provided by the application of different spray nozzles, with and without the use of an auxiliary boom. The deposition on the upper, middle and lower parts of the plants and the losses to the soil were evaluated using a tracer quantified by spectrophotometer. We also evaluated the chemical control of the leaf miner, counting the larvae, after the application of the insecticides cartap and fenpropathrin. The trial was carried out in a randomized block design, with four replications, in a factorial model (2×2+1): with and without the auxiliary boom, three spray nozzles (hollow cone – MAG 02, flat fan – AD 11002 and air induction hollow cone – TVI 8002) and a control. The use of the auxiliary boom increased the deposition in the lower part of the plants but decreased in the middle part, besides the increase in the runoff. The different nozzles do not provided differences in the deposition, showing the technical feasibility in the use of the hollow cone nozzles with coarse droplets and flat fan. All the chemical control decreased the leaf miner population, without differentiation.

The extensive use of cartap, a water soluble carbamate pesticide, raises the possibility of its undesirable toxicity to non-target organisms. Agricultural run-off and vector control sprays are the major sources of exposure to this pesticide for fresh water aquatic organisms. We therefore hypothesized that these sub-lethal yet environmentally significant concentrations of cartap has toxicological implications on fingerlings of Labeo rohita. The rationale of the study was to assess biochemical, histological responses and residue analysis in vital organs of L. rohita exposed to cartap hydrochloride after 24, 48, 72 and 96 h of exposure. An attempt has been made to elucidate the sub-lethal toxicity of cartap exposure on biomarker enzymes related to vital organs of L . rohita . The results clearly exemplify that exposure to sub-lethal concentration of cartap (0.3551 mg/L −1 for 96 h) was reflected in tissue concentrations of pesticide with significant alterations in the biomarker enzymes Acetylcholineesterase activity(AChE), Alanineaminotransferase(ALAT), Asparatateaminotransferase(AAT), alkaline phosphatase(ALP) and superoxide dismutase(SOD). Increased abnormalities in the liver function test coupled with an augmented antioxidant stress response (SOD activity) were noticeably observed in gills, liver and brain respectively. The presence of total cartap pesticide residues in fish tissue were determined by reverse phase high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with UV-detector. The LOD and LOQ of cartap residues in the exposed tissue samples were determined as 0.1(µg/L) and 0.012(µg/L) respectively. However, the tissue injuries were clearly evident from the morphological and nuclear anomalies in the hematoxylin and eosin stained sections of gill, liver and kidney suggested that cartap is moderately toxic to the L . rohita .

In Japan, Hirschmanniella diversa is an important pest in lotus cultivation in paddy fields and only lime nitrogen is registered for its control. Therefore, additional nematicides are required to control the nematode. The objective of this study was to screen for an effective nematicide. Fourth-stage juveniles and adults of H. diversa sampled from a lotus field were tested in in vitro solution experiments against 37 pesticides that are registered for the pest control of crops in Japan. Carbamate-based benfuracarb, organophosphate-based fenthion, nereistoxin-based cartap hydrochloride and cyanamide showed nematicidal effects against H. diversa. Benfuracarb at 1 &mu, g/mL showed a nematostatic effect on H. diversa in an agar plate assay. Further, H. diversa treated with benfuracarb did not resume activity 7 days post nematicide treatment when transferred to distilled water. Benfuracarb was tested in micro-field experiments, in which H. diversa density and lotus tuber damage levels were monitored. Results showed that benfuracarb reduced H. diversa densities in the roots during the cultivation period in 2012 and consistently reduced damage levels during a five year study period. Thus, benfuracarb is recommended as an effective nematicide to be used for H. diversa control in lotus cultivation.

A field study was conducted in coconut at farmer’s field in Halebudanuru village in Mandya district, Karnataka during 2017-2018. The frond injection, a novel method of insecticide application was evaluated against the black headed caterpillar Opisina arenosella Walker. The insecticides evaluated include: imidacloprid 17.8% SL, acetamiprid 20% SP, clothianidin 50% WG, thiacloprid 21.7% SC, emamectin benzoate 5% SG, spinosad 45% SC, cartap hydrochloride 50% SP and standard check monocrotophos 36% SL. Among these, it was observed that cartap hydrochloride 50%SP and monocrotophos 36% SL gave 100% mortality; all other treatments also gave significant mortality over control. The frond injection method advocated now is an easy, quicker and accurate method, without any secondary infection/ damage to the frond tissues.

Carthamus tinctorius L. (safflower) is an important oilseed crop producing seed oil rich in unsaturated fatty acids. Scarcity of identified marker-trait associations is a major limitation toward development of successful marker-assisted breeding programs in safflower. In the present study, a safflower panel (CartAP) comprising 124 accessions derived from two core collections was assayed for its suitability for association mapping. Genotyping of CartAP using microsatellite markers revealed significant genetic diversity indicated by Shannon information index (H = 0.7537) and Nei's expected heterozygosity (I = 0.4432). In Principal Coordinate Analysis, the CartAP accessions were distributed homogeneously in all quadrants indicating their diverse nature. Distance-based Neighbor Joining analysis did not delineate the CartAP accessions in consonance with their geographical origin. Bayesian analysis of population structure of CartAP demonstrated the unstructured nature of the association panel. Kinship analysis at population (Gij) and individual level (Fij) revealed absence of or weak relatedness between the CartAP accessions. The above parameters established the suitability of CartAP for association mapping. We performed association mapping using phenotypic data for eight traits of agronomic value (viz., seed oil content, oleic acid, linoleic acid, plant height, number of primary branches, number of capitula per plant, 100-seed weight and days to 50% flowering) available for two growing seasons (2011–2012 and 2012–2013) through General Linear Model and Mixed Linear Model. Our study identified ninety-six significant marker-trait associations (MTAs; P < 0.05) of which, several MTAs with correlation coefficient (R2) > 10% were consistently represented in both models and in both seasons for traits viz., oil content, oleic acid content, linoleic acid content and number of primary branches. Several MTAs with high R2-values were detected either in a majority or in some environments (models and/or seasons). Many MTAs were also common between traits (viz., oleic/linoleic acid content; plant height/days to 50% flowering; number of primary branches/number of capitula per plant) that showed positive or negative correlation in their phenotypic values. The marker-trait associations identified in this study will facilitate marker-assisted breeding and identification of genetic determinants of trait variability.
