74. A Self-Tuning Inductive Powering System for Biomedical Implants.

Abstract

Abstract: This paper describes the design and implementation of a self-tuning inductive powering system conceived for biomedical applications. The circuit operates at 1MHz and delivers 380 mW to the implant with an efficiency of 50%, at a distance of 1cm. Absorption modulation is used to monitor the circuit parameters allowing the system to deal with distance increases up to 5cm as well as small coil misalignments. The automatic-tuning system adjusts the configuration of the coil driver depending on the self-monitored coupling, acting on a bank of switchable capacitors with a pattern defined by the received data. It is demonstrated that the implemented tuning strategy boosts the transmitted power by a factor two. In addition, the combination of tuning and smart power regulation was proven to sensibly increase the system efficiency by maintaining a constant energy level at the secondary. 77. Effect of Microwave Radiation on the Acetate-Catalyzed Hydrolysis of Phenyl Acetate at 25 °C

Abstract

In this paper we present the experimental results obtained from phenyl acetate hydrolysis in a microwave-irradiated environment and in water solutions containing catalytic acetate ions. The kinetics of the reaction were studied in an irradiated environment where radiation, at a frequency of 2.45 GHz, was given to the reacting system at a power of 0.500 ± 0.025 W. The energy absorbed by the reacting system was measured using a directional coupler, which can separate the radiation directed to the reactor from any reflected one. The system was irradiated with a power greater than that required to run the reaction; however, any energy in excess of that absorbed by the reaction was quite easily taken up by a thermostatic system. In this way the reaction system could run without any thermal effect due to radiation. The temperature was set at 25 °C and was kept constant during the reaction by using carbon tetrachloride as the thermostating fluid. The results obtained show that the kinetics of the reaction studied were greatly enhanced with respect to those of the reaction running in a nonirradiated environment. The kinetic constant at zero concentration of the catalytic species rises from 1.92 × 10-4 h-1 in a nonirradiated environment to the value 27.58 × 10-4 h-1 found here. The observed kinetic constant retains the same value for all of the studied catalytic acetate ion concentrations. This fact suggests that microwave radiation produces something like a catalytic effect which can replace that given by acetate ions in nonirradiated environments.

79. Solubilities of <SCP>l</SCP>-Cystine, <SCP>l</SCP>-Tyrosine, <SCP>l</SCP>-Leucine, and Glycine in Their Water Solutions

Abstract

The solubilities of four amino acids, l-cystine, l-tyrosine, l-leucine, and glycine, in aqueous solutions containing another amino acid have been measured at 298.15 K, 308.15 K, and 318.15 K. In aqueous solutions containing l-cystine and l-tyrosine, which have a low solubility, the solubility of the other amino acids is similar to that in pure water except for l-cystine in water + l-tyrosine. On the other hand, compared to their solubilities in pure water, in aqueous solutions containing glycine, which is quite soluble, a large variation in the solubilities of all the amino acids can be seen. Considerable variations in the solubility of l-cystine or l-tyrosine are observed in aqueous solutions containing l-leucine.

Abstract

Solubilities at 25 °C of four amino acids (l-cystine, l-tyrosine, l-leucine, and glycine) in aqueous solutions at various pHs and NaCl concentrations (0, 1, 3 mol dm-3) are reported. The pH was varied from 0 to 13 using HCl or NaOH. The NaCl concentration strongly affects the solubilities of l-cystine, l-tyrosine, and l-leucine. In particular, the addition of NaCl increases the l-cystine solubility but reduces the solubility of l-tyrosine and l-leucine. The NaCl concentration has only a slight effect on the solubility of glycine. Experimental solubilities are correlated with the use of a chemical equilibrium model, good agreement in the pH range 1−12 was found. The analysis confirms the dependence reported in the literature between the solubility of amino acids and the salt concentration. For the amino acids examined, the parameters to calculate their solubilities in solutions with NaCl are also given.
