La ricerca si inserisce in un progetto triennale, nell'ambito del laboratorio di ricerca e trasferimento tecnologico LAV (Laboratorio Acustica Vibrazioni), che riguarda la identificazione di parametri sensibili per la caratterizzazione psicoacustica degli abitacoli di mezzi mobili, ai fini del miglioramento della qualità sonora del campo acustico presente in essi. In questa fase verranno presentati i risultati di una serie di registrazioni binaurali effettuate, al posto guida di tre diverse pale caricatrici compatte, mentre ciascuna macchina ripeteva, per cinque volte, lo stesso ciclo di lavoro, prima a vuoto, poi con due diverse tipologie di materiale. In base ai risultati delle analisi condotte su tutti gli stimoli sonori, in termini sia di parametri acustici classici che di grandezze psicoacustiche, verrà evidenziato come e in quale entità i diversi materiali influenzino le caratteristiche del campo acustico generato da questo tipo di macchina. Inoltre, la conduzione di specifici test di ascolto sull'insieme di tutti gli stimoli acquisiti per ciascuna macchina fornirà indicazione riguardo la ripetibilità, dal punto di vista percettivo, del rumore emesso durante ciascun ciclo di lavoro. Tali risultati saranno sfruttati per definire il protocollo sperimentale per le successive prove di ascolto volte alla individuazione del descrittore meglio correlato alla sensazione soggettiva.

Relazione illustrativa del progetto che mira a migliorare il clima acustico nella postazione dell'operatore di macchine movimento terra

Nel 2002 è stata pubblicata la terza parte della serie ISO 9614 "Determinazione dei livelli di potenza sonora delle sorgenti di rumore mediante il metodo intensimetrico" che riguarda specificamente un metodo di precisione (grado 1) per la misurazione per scansione. Nell'articolo si intendono mostrare i risultati della campagna di misure finalizzata al confronto dei tre metodi prova standardizzati. Le misure sono state effettuate su una pompa a ingranaggi installata su uno specifico circuito idraulico che permetteva il costante monitoraggio delle condizioni di funzionamento del componente. Si è scelta una superficie di misura a forma di parallelepipedo sulla quale sono state identificate diverse configurazioni sperimentali (densità dei punti e densità delle linee di scansione). I tre metodi di prova sono stati valutati qualitativamente in base all'accuratezza ottenibile evidenziando le difficoltà operative e il tempo necessario per il soddisfacimento dei criteri di verifica previsti dalle procedure. L'analisi statistica condotta sui risultati ottenuti ha permesso di individuare, inoltre, quali siano le variabili che influiscono significativamente sull'accuratezza raggiungibile con le diverse procedure di prova.

La recente pubblicazione della norma ISO 16902 che autorizza l'impiego della tecnica intensimetrica per la determinazione della potenza sonora di pompe oleodinamiche, ha introdotto un'importante innovazione ai fini della caratterizzazione acustica di questi componenti. Le precedenti procedure, infatti (ISO 4412), basate su misure di pressione sonora, impongono condizioni rigorose sul funzionamento e sull'installazione del componente da esaminare e richiedono l'utilizzo di ambienti acusticamente controllati, con notevoli difficoltà operative e costi di prova altissimi. La ISO 16902 specifica i requisiti per le condizioni di montaggio e di funzionamento della pompa mentre rimanda a una delle tre procedure descritte nelle norme ISO 9614 per la conduzione dei rilievi intensimetrici. Il lavoro, in particolare, mostrerà i risultati delle sperimentazioni effettuate per definire una procedura di prova per le pompe ad ingranaggi, in accordo ai requisiti indicati nella norma ISO 16902-1. Due diverse procedure di prova basate sul campionamento del campo di intensità normale alla superficie di misura mediante movimento continuo del trasduttore (rispondenti alle norme ISO 9614-2 e ISO 9614-3) saranno confrontate. Ciascuna di esse verrà valutata in funzione di alcuni parametri fondamentali quali l'accuratezza ottenibile, livello di campionamento richiesto, tempi necessari per il soddisfacimento dei requisiti prescelti e le difficoltà operative.

The determination of airborne noise levels is extremely important for the component selection in hydraulic fluid power systems. In the past, for pumps and motors, the only standardized procedures assuring the highest grade of accuracy were based on sound pressure measurements and required strictly controlled conditions such as hemi-anechoic or reverberant chambers (ISO 4412). In the last years, the publication of the ISO 16902 Standard for the determination of sound power levels based on sound intensity measurements, has fostered a hope of getting the same results in less strict conditions. This paper describes a series of experiments carried out in order to determine the sound power spectrum of a hydraulic fluid power pump, according to the ISO 16902 test code, based on ISO 9614-1 (sound intensity measurements at discrete points). The intent of this investigation is to verify the suitability of this procedure when it is applied to these components and to confirm or reject the expectation, reported in the Introduction of the Standard, saying that for these sources just an "engineering" or "survey" grade of accuracy can be achieved.

Gli operatori del comparto forestale hanno l'obbligo di indossare dispositivi di protezione individuale durante tutte le lavorazioni che richiedono l'uso di motoseghe. Studi epidemiologici hanno infatti evidenziato una stretta correlazione tra l'utilizzo di queste attrezzature e l'insorgenza, nel medio-lungo periodo, non solo di alterazioni vascolari e osteoarticolari a carico degli arti superiori, ma anche di danni importanti all'apparato uditivo a causa della loro elevata rumorosità (LAeq > 95 dBA). Ai fini della sicurezza degli operatori diventa, quindi, quanto mai importante non solo scegliere oculatamente i dispositivi di protezione, quando essi sono nuovi, ma anche sapere quali siano gli effetti indotti sulle loro prestazioni da invecchiamento, tempi e modalità di utilizzo. In letteratura, purtroppo, si trovano numerose e dettagliate informazioni sulle prestazioni di dispositivi nuovi, in termini di attenuazione valutata con test di laboratorio, mentre c'è un'estrema carenza di dati relativi all'attenuazione ottenibile in condizioni reali e ancor più a come tale valore possa variare nel tempo. Proprio al fine di far luce su quest'ultimo aspetto, fondamentale ai fini della garanzia della sicurezza, sono state effettuate, in laboratorio, misure di "insertion loss" su 26 esemplari di cuffie, tutte dello stesso modello, attualmente in dotazione presso i cantieri forestali della Valle d'Aosta. Il campione considerato include quattro dispositivi nuovi, 11 usati per 2000 ore lavorative e i rimanenti utilizzati per un periodo di tempo doppio.

The 2000/14/EC Directive is the European legislation concerning the limitation of noise emissions in the environment by equipment for use outdoors. It covers a wide range of different machines and lays down the requirements with regard to permissible noise levels, noise test codes, marking and conformity assessment procedures. This paper describes the novelties introduced by this legislation and the problems which are accompanying its application for different kinds of machines. Finally, the case of construction machines has been considered with the purpose to show whether and to what extent the technical progress in this specific field will guarantee the fulfilment of the reduced noise limits starting from 2006 (stage II of the Directive).

The 2000/14/EC Directive is the new European legislation concerning the limitation of noise emissions in the environment by equipment for use outdoors. It was published by the European Parliament on July, 2000, and has been in force all over the European Community since January, 2002. This Directive covers a wide range of different machines and lays down the requirements with regard to permissible noise levels, noise test codes, marking and conformity assessment procedures. Although its extremely flexible frame well suits the innovative concepts related to the New Approach, its practical implementation has been creating serious difficulties to ensure a uniform enforcement among all the Member States. This paper, after a short introduction on the contents and the novelties introduced by this legislation, will just point out the technical problems accompanying its application. In particular, the settling up of suitable procedures for the correct assessment of the experimental data uncertainties and the guaranteed sound power level will be presented. Finally, the case of construction machines will be described with the purpose of showing whether and to what extent the technical progress in this specific field will guarantee the fulfilment of the reduced noise limits starting from 2006 (stage II of the Directive).

The paper describes two experiments aimed at evaluating the feasibility and potential of the "sound quality" approach in improving the design of noise reduction treatments for Earth-Moving Machines (EMMs). In both experiments, binaural noise recordings taken in EMMs operating at stationary idle conditions have been used and subsequent laboratory listening tests have been carried out. In the first experiment, the recordings taken in three EMMs at different engine speeds were considered and presented by headphones to 35 naive subjects using the paired comparison method. In the second experiment, one of the previous recordings has been modified to get six sound stimuli, all having equal overall unweighted Leq levels but with different spectral shapes. The results confirm that subjective preference for a sound stimulus is influenced both by the overall sound energy and by its distribution in the frequency domain. Thus, sound energy-oriented parameters turn out to be not sufficient to characterise the auditory perception in EMMs. To investigate this aspect deeply, a principal component analysis has been performed on the sound stimuli. The results show that the most important factors which explain the subjective preference include the 400-5000 Hz frequency range and low engine order harmonics. In addition, loudness and PSIL appear to be promising for assistance with choosing suitable noise treatments more related to auditory perception.

Nowadays the requirements established by legislation and the demand of customers are forcing the earth moving machine manufacturers to face more efficiently the reduction of noise emitted by their products. In pursuing this objective it is fundamental to have tools enabling to evaluate the effectiveness of noise control actions. To cope with the standards the continuous equivalent A-weighted sound level LAeq is widespread used. Unfortunately this parameter is not satisfactory adequate in describing the perception of sound in terms of its quality. This aspect has become even more important and deeply investigated in automotive industry and its extension to earth moving machines should be considered in order to improve safety and comfort more efficiently. This paper describes a study undertaken to investigate how sounds at the operator's station of a skid steer loader, having the same LAeq but different spectra, are rated in terms of preference and annoyance.
