Search

Empirical correlations between the masses of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and properties of their host galaxies are well-established. Among these is the correlation with the flat rotation velocity of each galaxy measured either at a large radius in its rotation curve or via a spatially-integrated emission line width. We propose here the use of the de-projected integrated CO emission line width as an alternative tracer of this rotation velocity, that has already been shown useful for the Tully-Fisher (luminosity-rotation velocity) relation. We investigate the correlation between CO line widths and SMBH masses for two samples of galaxies with dynamical SMBH mass measurements, with respectively spatially-resolved and unresolved CO observations. The tightest correlation is found using the resolved sample of 24 galaxies as $\log (M_\mathrm{BH}/\mathrm{M_\odot})=(7.5\pm0.1)+(8.5\pm0.9)[\log(W_\mathrm{50}/\sin i \,\mathrm{km\,s}^{-1})-2.7]$, where $M_\mathrm{BH}$ is the central SMBH mass, $W_{50}$ the full-width at half-maximum of a double-horned emission line profile, and $i$ the inclination of the CO disc. This relation has a total scatter of $0.6\,$dex, comparable to those of other SMBH mass correlations, and dominated by the intrinsic scatter of $0.5\,$dex. A tight correlation is also found between the de-projected CO line widths and the stellar velocity dispersions averaged within one effective radius. In the $(\lambda_{\rm R}, \varepsilon)$ and $(V/\sigma, \varepsilon)$ diagrams for characterizing dynamical states, the fast-rotator galaxies (both early-type and spirals) are distributed within a well-defined leaf-shaped envelope. This was explained as due to an upper limit to the orbital anisotropy increasing with galaxy intrinsic flattening. However, a physical explanation for this empirical trend was missing. Here we construct Jeans Anisotropic Models (JAM), with either cylindrically or spherically aligned velocity ellipsoid (two extreme assumptions), and each with either spatially-constant or -variable anisotropy. We use JAM to build mock samples of axisymmetric galaxies, assuming on average an oblate shape for the velocity ellipsoid (as required to reproduce the rotation of real galaxies), and limiting the radial anisotropy $\beta$ to the range allowed by physical solutions. We find that all four mock samples naturally predict the observed galaxy distribution on the $(\lambda_{\rm R}, \varepsilon)$ and $(V/\sigma, \varepsilon)$ diagrams, without further assumptions. Given the similarity of the results from quite different models, we conclude that the empirical anisotropy upper limit in real galaxies, and the corresponding observed distributions in the $(\lambda_{\rm R}, \varepsilon)$ and $(V/\sigma, \varepsilon)$ diagrams, are due to the lack of physical axisymmetric equilibrium solutions at high $\beta$ anisotropy when the velocity ellipsoid is close to oblate., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication on MNRAS Letters

The morphology of galaxies gives essential constraints on the models of galaxy evolution. The morphology of the features in the low-surface-brightness regions of galaxies has not been fully explored yet because of observational difficulties. Here we present the results of our visual inspections of very deep images of a large volume-limited sample of 177 nearby massive early-type galaxies (ETGs) from the MATLAS survey. The images reach a surface-brightness limit of $28.5-29$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$ in the $g'$ band. Using a dedicated navigation tool and questionnaire, we looked for structures at the outskirts of the galaxies such as tidal shells, streams, tails, disturbed outer isophotes or peripheral star-forming disks, and simultaneously noted the presence of contaminating sources, such as Galactic cirrus. We also inspected internal sub-structures such as bars and dust lanes. We discuss the reliability of this visual classification investigating the variety of answers made by the participants. We present the incidence of these structures and the trends of the incidence with the mass of the host galaxy and the density of its environment. We find an incidence of shells, stream and tails of approximately 15%, about the same for each category. For galaxies with masses over $10^{11}$ M$_\odot$, the incidence of shells and streams increases about 1.7 times. We also note a strong unexpected anticorrelation of the incidence of Galactic cirrus with the environment density of the target galaxy. We estimate the mass of the intermediate-mass black hole at the heart of the dwarf elliptical galaxy NGC 404 using Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the molecular interstellar medium at an unprecedented linear resolution of ~0.5 pc, in combination with existing stellar kinematic information. These ALMA observations reveal a central disc/torus of molecular gas clearly rotating around the black hole. This disc is surrounded by a morphologically and kinematically complex flocculent distribution of molecular clouds, that we resolve in detail. Continuum emission is detected from the central parts of NGC 404, likely arising from the Rayleigh-Jeans tail of emission from dust around the nucleus, and potentially from dusty massive star-forming clumps at discrete locations in the disc. Several dynamical measurements of the black hole mass in this system have been made in the past, but they do not agree. We show here that both the observed molecular gas and stellar kinematics independently require a ~5x10$^5$ Msun black hole once we include the contribution of the molecular gas to the potential. Our best estimate comes from the high-resolution molecular gas kinematics, suggesting the black hole mass of this system is 5.5$^{+4.1}_{-3.8}\times$10$^5$ Msun (at the 99% confidence level), in good agreement with our revised stellar kinematic measurement and broadly consistent with extrapolations from the black hole mass - velocity dispersion and black hole mass - bulge mass relations. Galaxy clusters have long been theorised to quench the star-formation of their members. This study uses integral-field unit observations from the $K$-band Multi-Object Spectrograph (KMOS) - Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH) survey (K-CLASH) to search for evidence of quenching in massive galaxy clusters at redshifts $0.3

We present the first asymmetric drift (AD) measurements for unresolved stellar populations of different characteristic ages above and below 1.5 Gyr. These measurements sample the age-velocity relation (AVR) in galaxy disks. In this first paper we develop two efficient algorithms to extract AD on a spaxel-by-spaxel basis from optical integral-field spectroscopic (IFS) data-cubes. The algorithms apply different spectral templates, one using simple stellar populations and the other a stellar library; their comparison allows us to assess systematic errors in derived multi-component velocities, such as template-mismatch. We test algorithm reliability using mock spectra and Monte Carlo Markov Chains on real data from the MaNGA survey in SDSS-IV. We quantify random and systematic errors in AD as a function of signal-to-noise and stellar population properties with the aim of applying this technique to large subsets of the MaNGA galaxy sample. As a demonstration of our methods, we apply them to an initial sample of seven galaxies with comparable stellar mass and color to the Milky Way. We present the KMOS-CLASH (K-CLASH) survey, a K-band Multi-Object Spectrograph (KMOS) survey of the spatially-resolved gas properties and kinematics of 191 (predominantly blue) H$\alpha$-detected galaxies at $0.2 \lesssim z \lesssim 0.6$ in field and cluster environments. K-CLASH targets galaxies in four Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH) fields in the KMOS $IZ$-band, over $7'$ radius ($\approx2$-$3$ Mpc) fields-of-view. K-CLASH aims to study the transition of star-forming galaxies from turbulent, highly star-forming disc-like and peculiar systems at $z\approx1$-$3$, to the comparatively quiescent, ordered late-type galaxies at $z\approx0$, and to examine the role of clusters in the build-up of the red sequence since $z\approx1$. In this paper, we describe the K-CLASH survey, present the sample, and provide an overview of the K-CLASH galaxy properties. We demonstrate that our sample comprises star-forming galaxies typical of their stellar masses and epochs, residing both in field and cluster environments. We conclude K-CLASH provides an ideal sample to bridge the gap between existing large integral-field spectroscopy surveys at higher and lower redshifts. We find that star-forming K-CLASH cluster galaxies at intermediate redshifts have systematically lower stellar masses than their star-forming counterparts in the field, hinting at possible "downsizing" scenarios of galaxy growth in clusters at these epochs. We measure no difference between the star-formation rates of H$\alpha$-detected, star-forming galaxies in either environment after accounting for stellar mass, suggesting that cluster quenching occurs very rapidly during the epochs probed by K-CLASH, or that star-forming K-CLASH galaxies in clusters have only recently arrived there, with insufficient time elapsed for quenching to have occured., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 31 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables; updated to correct typos in Section 5.2

We study a sample of 148 early-type galaxies in the Coma cluster using SDSS photometry and spectra, and calibrate our results using detailed dynamical models for a subset of these galaxies, to create a precise benchmark for dynamical scaling relations in high-density environments. For these galaxies, we successfully measured global galaxy properties, modeled stellar populations, and created dynamical models, and support the results using detailed dynamical models of 16 galaxies, including the two most massive cluster galaxies, using data taken with the SAURON IFU. By design, the study provides minimal scatter in derived scaling relations due to the small uncertainty in the relative distances of galaxies compared to the cluster distance. Our results demonstrate low ($\leq$55% for 90$^{th}$ percentile) dark matter fractions in the inner 1$R_{\rm e}$ ~of galaxies. Owing to the study design, we produce the tightest, to our knowledge, IMF-$\sigma_e$ relation of galaxies, with a slope consistent with that seen in local galaxies. Leveraging our dynamical models, we transform the classical Fundamental Plane of the galaxies to the Mass Plane. We find that the coefficients of the mass plane are close to predictions from the virial theorem, and have significantly lower scatter compared to the Fundamental plane. We show that Coma galaxies occupy similar locations in the (M$_*$ - $R_{\rm e}$) and (M$_*$ - $\sigma_e$) relations as local field galaxies but are older. This, and the fact we find only three slow rotators in the cluster, is consistent with the scenario of hierarchical galaxy formation and expectations of the kinematic morphology-density relation., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Galaxy properties are known to correlate most tightly with the galaxy effective stellar velocity dispersion $\sigma_{\rm e}$. Here we look for {\em additional} trends at fixed $\sigma_{\rm e}$ using 1339 galaxies ($M_\ast \gtrsim 6\times10^9$ M$_\odot$) with different morphologies in the MaNGA (DR14) sample with integral-field spectroscopy data. We focus on the gradients ($\gamma_{\rm rms} \equiv \sigma(R_{\rm e}/4)/\sigma_{\rm e}$) of the stellar root-mean-square velocity ($V_{\rm rms} \equiv \sqrt{V^2 + \sigma^2}$), which we show traces the total mass density gradient $\gamma_{\rm tot}$ derived from dynamical models and, more weakly, the bulge fraction. We confirm that $\gamma_{\rm rms}$ increases with $\sigma_{\rm e}$, age and metallicity. We additionally find that these correlations still exist at fixed $\sigma_{\rm e}$, where galaxies with larger $\gamma_{\rm rms}$ are found to be older and more metal-rich. It means that mass density gradients contain information of the stellar population which is not fully accounted for by $\sigma_{\rm e}$. This result puts an extra constraint on our understanding of galaxy quenching. We compare our results with galaxies in the IllustrisTNG hydrodynamical simulations and find that, at fixed $\sigma_{\rm e}$, similar trends exist with age, the bulge fraction, and the total mass density slope but, unlike observations, no correlation with metallicity can be detected in the simulations., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures; Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We study the link between the kinematic-morphology of galaxies, as inferred from integral-field stellar kinematics, and their relation between mass and star formation rate (SFR). Our sample consists of $\sim 3200$ galaxies with integral-field spectroscopic data from the MaNGA survey with available determinations of their effective stellar angular momentum within the half-light radius $\lambda_{R_e}$. We find that for star-forming galaxies, namely along the star formation main sequence (SFMS), the $\lambda_{R_e}$ values remain large and almost unchanged over about two orders of magnitude in stellar mass, with the exception of the lowest masses $\mathcal{M}_{\star}\lesssim2\times10^{9} \mathcal{M}_{\odot}$, where $\lambda_{R_e}$ slightly decreases. The SFMS is dominated by spiral galaxies with small bulges. Below the SFMS, but above the characteristic stellar mass $\mathcal{M}_{\rm crit}\approx2\times10^{11} \mathcal{M}_{\odot}$, there is a sharp decrease in $\lambda_{R_e}$ with decreasing star formation rate: massive galaxies well below the SFMS are mainly slow-rotator early-type galaxies, namely genuinely spheroidal galaxies without disks. Below the SFMS and below $\mathcal{M}_{\rm crit}$ the decrease of $\lambda_{R_e}$ with decreasing SFR becomes modest or nearly absent: low-mass galaxies well below the SFMS, are fast-rotator early-type galaxies, and contain fast-rotating stellar disks like their star-forming counterparts. We also find a small but clear environmental dependence for the massive galaxies: in the mass range $10^{10.9}-10^{11.5} \mathcal{M}_{\odot}$, galaxies in rich groups or denser regions or classified as central galaxies have lower values of $\lambda_{R_e}$. While no environmental dependence is found for galaxies of lower mass. We study the evidence for a diversity of formation processes in early-type galaxies by presenting the first complete volume-limited sample of slow rotators with both integral-field kinematics from the ATLAS3D Project and high spatial resolution photometry from the Hubble Space Telescope. Analysing the nuclear surface brightness profiles of 12 newly imaged slow rotators, we classify their light profiles as core-less, and place an upper limit to the core size of ~10 pc. Considering the full magnitude and volume-limited ATLAS3D sample, we correlate the presence or lack of cores with stellar kinematics, including the proxy for the stellar angular momentum and the velocity dispersion within one half-light radius, stellar mass, stellar age, $\alpha$-element abundance, and age and metallicity gradients. More than half of the slow rotators have core-less light profiles, and they are all less massive than $10^{11}$ Msun. Core-less slow rotators show evidence for counter-rotating flattened structures, have steeper metallicity gradients, and a larger dispersion of gradient values than core slow rotators. Our results suggest that core and core-less slow rotators have different assembly processes, where the former are the relics of massive dissipation-less merging in the presence of central supermassive black holes. Formation processes of core-less slow rotators are consistent with accretion of counter-rotating gas or gas-rich mergers of special orbital configurations, which lower the final net angular momentum of stars, but support star formation. We also highlight core fast rotators as galaxies that share properties of core slow rotators and core-less slow rotators. This paper documents the sixteenth data release (DR16) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fourth and penultimate from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). This is the first release of data from the southern hemisphere survey of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2); new data from APOGEE-2 North are also included. DR16 is also notable as the final data release for the main cosmological program of the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), and all raw and reduced spectra from that project are released here. DR16 also includes all the data from the Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS) and new data from the SPectroscopic IDentification of ERosita Survey (SPIDERS) programs, both of which were co-observed on eBOSS plates. DR16 has no new data from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey (or the MaNGA Stellar Library "MaStar"). Galaxy interactions leave imprints in the motions of their stars, and so observing the two-dimensional stellar kinematics allows us to uncover their formation process. Slow rotators, which have stellar orbits dominated by random motions, are thought to be the fossil relics of a sequence of multiple gas-poor mergers, in an environment where the cold gas required to form new stars is nearly absent. Indeed, observations of a handful of nearby galaxy clusters have indicated that slow rotators are preferentially found in the gas-poor, dense cores of clusters, which themselves must form by merging of smaller groups. However, the generality of this result and connection between kinematics and environment is currently unclear, as recent studies have suggested that, at given stellar mass, the environment does not influence the formation of slow rotators. Here we address this issue by combining a careful quality-assessed sample selection with two-dimensional stellar kinematics from a large galaxy survey and a novel photometric classification approach where kinematics are unavailable. We obtain the first complete census of the location of massive slow rotators in ten large clusters: in all cases, slow rotators are extremely rare and generally trace the clusters density peaks. We present near-infrared observations of 42 gravitationally lensed galaxies obtained in the framework of the KMOS Lensed Emission Lines and VElocity Review (KLEVER) Survey, a program aimed at investigating the spatially resolved properties of the ionised gas in 1.2 3$\sigma$) "inverted" gradients are also found, showing an anti-correlation between metallicity and star formation rate density on local scales, possibly suggesting recent episodes of pristine gas accretion or strong radial flows in place. Nevertheless, the individual metallicity maps are characterised by a variety of different morphologies, with flat radial gradients sometimes hiding non-axisymmetric variations on kpc scales which are washed out by azimuthal averages, especially in interacting systems or in those undergoing local episodes of recent star formation., Comment: Main text: 23 pages, 11 figures. It has been observed that low redshift early-type galaxies can be separated into slow and fast rotators according to a proxy of specific stellar angular momentum, $\lambda_{R_e}$. Detailed studies of a handful of nearby clusters have shown that slow rotators are generally found at the centres of clusters where the number density is highest, whereas the fast rotators trace the trend followed by early-type galaxies of increasing in number with local density. In this paper, we study the environmental distribution of slow and fast rotators using the stellar kinematics of about 3900 galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey's Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory survey. For galaxies in groups closer than $z=0.08$ that are not observed with MaNGA but satisfy the necessary conditions for slow rotators, we visually assign slow/fast rotator classifications to obtain a complete sample. Our final catalogue contains about 900 groups of five or more members. We observe the kinematic morphology-density (kT-$\Sigma$) relation for each group and find an increasing fraction of massive slow rotators with increasing number density. We provide evidence suggesting that the observed lack of trends in angular momentum with environment at fixed stellar mass is partly because the maximum density varies between clusters, and that the locations of massive slow rotators are strongly correlated with peak densities in galaxy groups and clusters. We conclude that the (projected) number density relative to the cluster peak is more fundamental than the absolute number density in influencing the abundance of slow rotators. We find that the kT-$\Sigma$ relation does exist at fixed stellar mass, and we rule out the hypothesis that the kT-$\Sigma$ relation is a result of dynamical friction alone, instead arguing that massive slow rotators grow hierarchically in tandem with their host clusters., Comment: Submitted to Astronomy & Astrophysics on October 6th 2019. Galaxy morphology is inextricably linked to environment. The morphology-density relation quantifies this relationship. However, optical morphology is only loosely related to the kinematic structure of galaxies, and about two thirds of elliptical ("spheroidal") galaxies are actually misclassified face-on disks, and would appear flattened if view edge on. A more robust classification is the slow/fast rotator classification which describes the kinematic structure. Slow and fast rotators form a bimodality in galaxy properties and are thought to follow distinct evolutionary paths, and so a kinematic morphology-density (kT-$\Sigma$) relation is more meaningful. To date the kT-$\Sigma$ relation has only been studied for a handful of nearby clusters,or across large numbers of clusters but with incomplete coverage. Here, we combine stellar kinematics obtained with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey's (SDSS) Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory survey with classifications using a novel visual method to obtain the largest complete census of slow and fast rotators in nearby galaxy groups and clusters. To account for incompleteness in the SDSS spectroscopic catalogue, we combine the catalogue with the photometric catalogue, which we clean using empirical criteria. We test our visual classification method and find our false negative rate to be only $\sim$6% (0% for $M \gtrsim 10^{11.7}M_{\odot}$). In contrast, our false positive rate is about 50% implying half of all slow rotator candidates will be confirmed as fast rotators if stellar kinematics become available. Hence, our misclassification is essentially random with only a weak dependence on stellar mass, and as slow rotators are intrinsically rare, the absolute number of misclassifications will be small compared to the sample size. The majority of galaxy group catalogues available in the literature use the popular friends-of-friends algorithm which links galaxies using a linking length. One potential drawback to this approach is that clusters of point can be link with thin bridges which may not be desirable. Furthermore, these algorithms are designed with large-scales galaxy surveys in mind rather than small-scale, local galaxy environments, where attention to detail is important. Here we present a new simple group finder algorithm, TD-ENCLOSER, that finds the group that encloses a target galaxy of interest. TD-ENCLOSER is based on the kernel density estimation method which treats each galaxy, represented by a zero-dimensional particle, as a two-dimensional circular Gaussian. The algorithm assigns galaxies to peaks in the density field in order of density in descending order ("Top Down") so that galaxy groups "grow" around the density peaks. Outliers in under-dense regions are prevented from joining groups by a specified hard threshold, while outliers at the group edges are clipped below a soft (blurred) interior density level. The group assignments are largely insensitive to all free parameters apart from the hard density threshold and the kernel standard deviation, although this is a known feature of density-based group finder algorithms, and operates with a computing speed that increases linearly with the size of the input sample. In preparation for a companion paper, we also present a simple algorithm to select unique representative groups when duplicates occur. TD-ENCLOSER produces results comparable to those from a widely used catalogue, as shown in a companion paper. As part of the mm-Wave Interferometric Survey of Dark Object Masses (WISDOM), we present a measurement of the mass of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) in the nearby early-type galaxy NGC 0383 (radio source 3C 031). This measurement is based on Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-milimeter Array (ALMA) cycle 4 and 5 observations of the 12CO(2-1) emission line with a spatial resolution of 58x32pc2 (0."18x0."1). This resolution, combined with a channel width of 10 km/s, allows us to well resolve the radius of the black hole sphere of influence (measured as R_SOI = 316pc = 0."98), where we detect a clear Keplerian increase of the rotation velocities. NGC 0383 has a kinematically-relaxed, smooth nuclear molecular gas disc with weak ring/spiral features. We forward-model the ALMA data cube with the Kinematic Molecular Simulation (KinMS) tool and a Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to measure a SMBH mass of (4.2+/-0.7)x10^9 Msun, a F160W-band stellar mass-to-light ratio that varies from 2.8+/-0.6 Msun/Lsun in the centre to 2.4+/-0.3 Msun/Lsun at the outer edge of the disc and a molecular gas velocity dispersion of 8.3+/-2.1 km/s (all 3-sigma uncertainties). We also detect unresolved continuum emission across the full bandwidth, consistent with synchrotron emission from an active galactic nucleus. We construct the first comprehensive dynamical model for the high-quality subset of stellar kinematics of the Milky Way disc, with full 6D phase-space coordinates, provided by the Gaia Data Release 2. We adopt an axisymmetric approximation and use an updated Jeans Anisotropic Modelling (JAM) method, which allows for a generic shape and radial orientation of the velocity ellipsoid, as indicated by the Gaia data, to fit the mean velocities and all three components of the intrinsic velocity dispersion tensor. The Milky Way is the first galaxy for which all intrinsic phase space coordinates are available, and the kinematics are superior to the best integral-field kinematics of external galaxies. This situation removes the long-standing dynamical degeneracies and makes this the first dynamical model highly over-constrained by the kinematics. For these reasons, our ability to fit the data provides a fundamental test for both galaxy dynamics and the mass distribution in the Milky Way disc. We tightly constrain the volume average total density logarithmic slope, in the radial range 3.6--12 kpc, to be $\alpha_{\rm tot}=-2.149\pm 0.055$ and find that the dark halo slope must be significantly steeper than $\alpha_{\rm DM}=-1$ (NFW). The dark halo shape is close to spherical and its density is $\rho_{\rm DM}(R_\odot)=0.0115\pm0.0020$ M$_\odot$ pc$^{-3}$ ($0.437\pm0.076$ GeV cm$^{-3}$), in agreement with previous estimates. The circular velocity at the solar position $v_{\rm circ}(R_{\odot}) = 236.5\pm 3.1$ km s$^{-1}$ (including systematics) and its gently declining radial trends are also consistent with recent determinations., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. I present a flexible solution for the axisymmetric Jeans equations of stellar hydrodynamics under the assumption of an anisotropic (three-integral) velocity ellipsoid aligned with the spherical polar coordinate system. I describe and test a robust and efficient algorithm for its numerical computation. I outline the evaluation of the intrinsic velocity moments and the projection of all first and second velocity moments, including both the line-of-sight velocities and the proper motions. This spherically-aligned Jeans Anisotropic Modelling (JAM_sph) method can describe in detail the photometry and kinematics of real galaxies. It allows for a spatially-varying anisotropy, or stellar mass-to-light ratios gradients, as well as for the inclusion of general dark matter distributions and supermassive black holes. The JAM_sph method complements my previously derived cylindrically-aligned JAM_cyl and spherical Jeans solutions, which I also summarize in this paper. Comparisons between results obtained with either JAM_sph or JAM_cyl can be used to asses the robustness of inferred dynamical quantities. As an illustration, I modelled the Atlas3D sample of 260 early-type galaxies with high-quality integral-field spectroscopy, using both methods. I found that they provide statistically indistinguishable total-density logarithmic slopes. This may explain the previously-reported success of the JAM method in recovering density profiles of real or simulated galaxies. We present high angular resolution (0.3" or 37 pc) Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the CO(2-1) line emission from a central disc in the early-type galaxy NGC 524. This disc is shown to be dynamically relaxed, exhibiting ordered rotation about a compact 1.3mm continuum source, which we identify as emission from an active supermassive black hole (SMBH). There is a hole at the centre of the disc slightly larger than the SMBH sphere of influence. An azimuthal distortion of the observed velocity field is found to be due to either a position angle warp or radial gas flow over the inner 2.5". By forward-modelling the observations, we obtain an estimate of the SMBH mass of $4.0^{+3.5}_{-2.0}\times10^8\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$, where the uncertainties are at the $3\sigma$ level. The uncertainties are dominated by the poorly constrained inclination and the stellar mass-to-light ratio of this galaxy, and our measurement is consistent with the established correlation between SMBH mass and stellar velocity dispersion. Our result is roughly half that of the previous stellar dynamical measurement, but is consistent within the uncertainties of both. Different massive black hole mass - host galaxy scaling relations suggest that the growth of massive black holes is entangled with the evolution of their host galaxies. The number of measured black hole masses is still limited, and additional measurements are necessary to understand the underlying physics of this apparent co-evolution. We add six new black hole mass (MBH) measurements of nearby fast rotating early-type galaxies to the known black hole mass sample, namely NGC 584, NGC 2784, NGC 3640, NGC 4570, NGC 4281 and NGC 7049. Our target galaxies have effective velocity dispersions ({\sigma}e) between 170 and 245 km s^(-1), and thus this work provides additional insight into the black hole properties of intermediate-mass early-type galaxies. We combine high-resolution adaptive-optics SINFONI data with large-scale MUSE, VIMOS and SAURON data from ATLAS3D to derive two-dimensional stellar kinematics maps. We then build both Jeans Anisotropic Models and axisymmetric Schwarzschild models to measure the central black hole masses. Our Schwarzschild models provide black hole masses which are consistent with recent MBH-{\sigma}e scaling relations. NGC 3640 has a velocity dispersion dip and NGC 7049 a constant velocity dispersion in the center, but we can clearly constrain their lower black hole mass limit. We conclude our analysis with a test on NGC 4570 taking into account a variable mass-to-light ratio (M/L) when constructing dynamical models. When considering M/L variations linked mostly to radial changes in the stellar metallicity, we find that the dynamically determined black hole mass from NGC 4570 decreases by 30%. Three basic ingredients are required to generate a simple stellar population (SSP) library, i.e., an initial mass function (IMF), a stellar evolution model/isochrones, and an empirical/theoretical stellar spectral library. However, there are still some uncertainties to the determination and understanding of these ingredients. We perform the spectral fitting to test the relative parameter offsets between these uncertainties using two different stellar population models, two different empirical stellar libraries, two different isochrones, and the Salpeter and Chabrier IMFs. Based on these setups, we select five SSP libraries generated with the Galaxev/STELIB and Vazdekis/MILES models, and apply them to the pPXF full-spectrum fitting of both MaNGA and mock spectra. We find that: 1) Compared to the Galaxev/STELIB model, spectral fitting qualities with the Vazdekis/MILES model have significant improvements for those metal-rich (especially over-solar) spectra, which cause better reduced $\chi^2$ distributions and more precisely fitted absorption lines. This might due to the lack of metal rich stars in the empirical STELIB library, or code improvement of the Vazdekis model. 2) When applying the Vazdekis/MILES model for spectral fitting, the IMF variation will lead to not only a systematic offset in $M_*/L_r$, but also offsets in age and metallicity, and these offsets increase with increasing stellar population ages. However, the IMF-variation caused metallicity offsets disappear in the case of Galaxev/STELIB based libraries. 3) The Padova2000 model provides a better match to the MaNGA galaxy spectra at [M/H]$_L<-1.0$, while the BaSTI model match the local galaxy spectra better at [M/H]$_L>-1.0$. We improve the dynamical black hole (BH) mass estimates in three nearby low-mass early-type galaxies--NGC 205, NGC 5102, and NGC 5206. We use new \hst/STIS spectroscopy to fit the star formation histories of the nuclei in these galaxies, and use these measurements to create local color--mass-to-light ratio (\ml) relations. We then create new mass models from \hst~imaging and combined with adaptive optics kinematics, we use Jeans dynamical models to constrain their BH masses. The masses of the central BHs in NGC 5102 and NGC 5206 are both below one million solar masses and are consistent with our previous estimates, $9.12_{-1.53}^{+1.84}\times10^5$\Msun~and $6.31_{-2.74}^{+1.06}\times10^5$\Msun~(3$\sigma$ errors), respectively. However, for NGC 205, the improved models suggest the presence of a BH for the first time, with a best-fit mass of $6.8_{-6.7}^{+95.6}\times10^3$\Msun~(3$\sigma$ errors). This is the least massive central BH mass in a galaxy detected using any method. We discuss the possible systematic errors of this measurement in detail. Using this BH mass, the existing upper limits of both X-ray, and radio emissions in the nucleus of NGC 205 suggest an accretion rate $\lesssim$$10^{-5}$ of the Eddington rate. We also discuss the color--\mleff~relations in our nuclei and find that the slopes of these vary significantly between nuclei. We investigate the nature of star-forming galaxies with reduced specific star formation rate (sSFR) and high stellar masses, those `green valley' objects that seemingly cause a reported bending, or flattening, of the star-forming main sequence. The fact that such objects host large bulges recently led some to suggest that the internal formation of bulges was a late event that induced the sSFRs of massive galaxies to drop in a slow downfall, and thus the main sequence to bend. We have studied in detail a sample of 10 galaxies at $0.45

Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) is acquiring integral-field spectroscopy for the largest sample of galaxies to date. By 2020, the MaNGA Survey --- one of three core programs in the fourth-generation Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) --- will have observed a statistically representative sample of 10$^4$ galaxies in the local Universe ($z\lesssim0.15$). In addition to a robust data-reduction pipeline (DRP), MaNGA has developed a data-analysis pipeline (DAP) that provides higher-level data products. To accompany the first public release of its code base and data products, we provide an overview of the MaNGA DAP, including its software design, workflow, measurement procedures and algorithms, performance, and output data model. In conjunction with our companion paper Belfiore et al., we also assess the DAP output provided for 4718 observations of 4648 unique galaxies in the recent SDSS Data Release 15 (DR15). These analysis products focus on measurements that are close to the data and require minimal model-based assumptions. Namely, we provide stellar kinematics (velocity and velocity dispersion), emission-line properties (kinematics, fluxes, and equivalent widths), and spectral indices (e.g., D4000 and the Lick indices). We find that the DAP provides robust measurements and errors for the vast majority ($>$99%) of analyzed spectra. We summarize assessments of the precision and accuracy of our measurements as a function of signal-to-noise, and provide specific guidance to users regarding the limitations of the data. SDSS-IV MaNGA (Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory) is the largest integral-field spectroscopy survey to date, aiming to observe a statistically representative sample of 10,000 low-redshift galaxies. In this paper we study the reliability of the emission-line fluxes and kinematic properties derived by the MaNGA Data Analysis Pipeline (DAP). We describe the algorithmic choices made in the DAP with regards to measuring emission-line properties, and the effect of our adopted strategy of simultaneously fitting the continuum and line emission. The effect of random errors are quantified by studying various fit-quality metrics, idealized recovery simulations and repeat observations. This analysis demonstrates that the emission lines are well-fit in the vast majority of the MaNGA dataset and the derived fluxes and errors are statistically robust. The systematic uncertainty on emission-line properties introduced by the choice of continuum templates is also discussed. In particular, we test the effect of using different stellar libraries and simple stellar-population models on the derived emission-line fluxes and the effect of introducing different tying prescriptions for the emission-line kinematics. We show that these effects can generate large ($>$ 0.2 dex) discrepancies at low signal-to-noise and for lines with low equivalent width (EW); however, the combined effect is noticeable even for H$\alpha$ EW $>$ 6~\AA. We provide suggestions for optimal use of the data provided by SDSS data release 15 and propose refinements on the \DAP\ for future MaNGA data releases., Comment: accepted on AJ

Twenty years have passed since first light for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Here, we release data taken by the fourth phase of SDSS (SDSS-IV) across its first three years of operation (July 2014-July 2017). This is the third data release for SDSS-IV, and the fifteenth from SDSS (Data Release Fifteen; DR15). New data come from MaNGA - we release 4824 datacubes, as well as the first stellar spectra in the MaNGA Stellar Library (MaStar), the first set of survey-supported analysis products (e.g. stellar and gas kinematics, emission line, and other maps) from the MaNGA Data Analysis Pipeline (DAP), and a new data visualisation and access tool we call "Marvin". The next data release, DR16, will include new data from both APOGEE-2 and eBOSS; those surveys release no new data here, but we document updates and corrections to their data processing pipelines. The release is cumulative; it also includes the most recent reductions and calibrations of all data taken by SDSS since first light. In this paper we describe the location and format of the data and tools and cite technical references describing how it was obtained and processed. The SDSS website (www.sdss.org) has also been updated, providing links to data downloads, tutorials and examples of data use. While SDSS-IV will continue to collect astronomical data until 2020, and will be followed by SDSS-V (2020-2025), we end this paper by describing plans to ensure the sustainability of the SDSS data archive for many years beyond the collection of data., Comment: Paper to accompany DR15. 25 pages, 6 figures. We present a series of 20 cosmological zoom simulations of the formation of massive galaxies with and without a model for AGN feedback. Differences in stellar population and kinematic properties are evaluated by constructing mock integral field unit (IFU) maps. The impact of the AGN is weak at high redshift when all systems are mostly fast-rotating and disc-like. After $z \sim 1$ the AGN simulations result in lower mass, older, less metal rich and slower rotating systems with less disky isophotes - in general agreement with observations. Two-dimensional kinematic maps of in-situ and accreted stars show that these differences result from reduced in-situ star formation due to AGN feedback. A full analysis of stellar orbits indicates that galaxies simulated with AGN are typically more triaxial and have higher fractions of x-tubes and box orbits and lower fractions of z-tubes. This trend can also be explained by reduced late in-situ star formation. We introduce a global parameter, $\xi_3$ , to characterise the anti-correlation between the third-order kinematic moment $h_3$ and the line-of-sight velocity ($v_{los}/{\sigma}$), and compare to ATLAS$^{3D}$ observations. The kinematic asymmetry parameter $\xi_3$ might be a useful diagnostic for large integral field surveys as it is a kinematic indicator for intrinsic shape and orbital content.

A new class of quiescent galaxies harboring possible AGN-driven winds has been discovered using spatially resolved optical spectroscopy from the ongoing SDSS-IV MaNGA survey. These galaxies, termed "red geysers", constitute $5-10\%$ of the local quiescent population and are characterized by narrow bisymmetric patterns in ionized gas emission features. Cheung et al. argued that these galaxies host large-scale AGN-driven winds that may play a role in suppressing star formation at late times. In this work, we test the hypothesis that AGN activity is ultimately responsible for the red geyser phenomenon. We compare the nuclear radio activity of the red geysers to a matched control sample with similar stellar mass, redshift, rest frame $NUV-r$ color, axis ratio and presence of ionized gas. We have used the 1.4 GHz radio continuum data from VLA FIRST survey to stack the radio flux from the red geyser and control samples. In addition to a 3 times higher FIRST detection rate, we find that red geysers have a 5$\sigma$ higher level of average radio flux than control galaxies. After restricting to rest-frame $NUV-r$ color $>$ 5 and checking mid-IR WISE photometry, we rule out star formation contamination and conclude that red geysers are associated with more active AGN. Red geysers and a possibly-related class with disturbed H$\alpha$ emission account for 40\% of all radio-detected red galaxies with $\rm log~(M_\star/M_\odot) < 11$. Our results support a picture in which episodic AGN activity drives large-scale-relatively weak ionized winds that may provide a feedback mechanism for many early-type galaxies., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical journal

By inverting the distributions of galaxies' apparent ellipticities and misalignment angles (measured around the projected half-light radius $R_{\rm e}$) between their photometric and kinematic axes, we study the intrinsic shape distribution of 189 slow rotator early-type galaxies with stellar masses $2\times 10^{11} M_{\odot}

The majority of spiral and elliptical galaxies in the Universe host very dense and compact stellar systems at their centres known as nuclear star clusters (NSCs). In this work we study the stellar populations and star formation histories (SFH) of the NSCs of six nearby galaxies with stellar masses ranging between $2$ and $8\times10^9~{\rm M_{\odot}}$ (four late-type spirals and two early-types) with high resolution spectroscopy. Our observations are taken with the X-Shooter spectrograph at the VLT. We make use of an empirical simple stellar population (SSP) model grid to fit composite stellar populations to the data and recover the SFHs of the nuclei. We find that the nuclei of all late-type galaxies experienced a prolonged SFH, while the NSCs of the two early-types are consistent with SSPs. The NSCs in the late-type galaxies sample appear to have formed a significant fraction of their stellar mass already more than $10$ Gyr ago, while the NSCs in the two early-type galaxies are surprisingly younger. Stars younger than $100$ Myr are present in at least two nuclei: NGC 247 and NGC 7793, with some evidence for young star formation in NGC 300's NSC. The NSCs of the spirals NGC 247 and NGC 300 are consistent with prolonged \in situ star formation with a gradual metallicity enrichment from $\sim-1.5$ dex more than $10$ Gyr ago, reaching super-Solar values few hundred Myr ago. NGC 3621 appears to be very metal rich already in the early Universe and NGC 7793 presents us with a very complex SFH, likely dominated by merging of various massive star clusters coming from different environments., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Using mock spectra based on Vazdekis/MILES library fitted within the wavelength region 3600-7350\AA, we analyze the bias and scatter on the resulting physical parameters induced by the choice of fitting algorithms and observational uncertainties, but avoid effects of those model uncertainties. We consider two full-spectrum fitting codes: pPXF and STARLIGHT, in fitting for stellar population age, metallicity, mass-to-light ratio, and dust extinction. With pPXF we find that both the bias in the population parameters and the scatter in the recovered logarithmic values follows the expected trend. The bias increases for younger ages and systematically makes recovered ages older, $M_*/L_r$ larger and metallicities lower than the true values. For reference, at S/N=30, and for the worst case ($t=10^8$yr), the bias is 0.06 dex in $M_*/L_r$, 0.03 dex in both age and [M/H]. There is no significant dependence on either E(B-V) or the shape of the error spectrum. Moreover, the results are consistent for both our 1-SSP and 2-SSP tests. With the STARLIGHT algorithm, we find trends similar to pPXF, when the input E(B-V)<0.2 mag. However, with larger input E(B-V), the biases of the output parameter do not converge to zero even at the highest S/N and are strongly affected by the shape of the error spectra. This effect is particularly dramatic for youngest age, for which all population parameters can be strongly different from the input values, with significantly underestimated dust extinction and [M/H], and larger ages and $M_*/L_r$. Results degrade when moving from our 1-SSP to the 2-SSP tests. The STARLIGHT convergence to the true values can be improved by increasing Markov Chains and annealing loops to the "slow mode". For the same input spectrum, pPXF is about two order of magnitudes faster than STARLIGHT's "default mode" and about three order of magnitude faster than STARLIGHT's "slow mode"., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 17 pages, 17 figures

We examine the internal properties of the most massive ultracompact dwarf galaxy (UCD), M59-UCD3, by combining adaptive optics assisted near-IR integral field spectroscopy from Gemini/NIFS, and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging. We use the multi-band HST imaging to create a mass model that suggests and accounts for the presence of multiple stellar populations and structural components. We combine these mass models with kinematics measurements from Gemini/NIFS to find a best-fit stellar mass-to-light ratio ($M/L$) and black hole (BH) mass using Jeans Anisotropic Models (JAM), axisymmetric Schwarzschild models, and triaxial Schwarzschild models. The best fit parameters in the JAM and axisymmetric Schwarzschild models have black holes between 2.5 and 5.9 million solar masses. The triaxial Schwarzschild models point toward a similar BH mass, but show a minimum $\chi^2$ at a BH mass of $\sim 0$. Models with a BH in all three techniques provide better fits to the central $V_{rms}$ profiles, and thus we estimate the BH mass to be $4.2^{+2.1}_{-1.7} \times 10^{6}$ M$_\odot$ (estimated 1$\sigma$ uncertainties). We also present deep radio imaging of M59-UCD3 and two other UCDs in Virgo with dynamical BH mass measurements, and compare these to X-ray measurements to check for consistency with the fundamental plane of BH accretion. We detect faint radio emission in M59cO, but find only upper limits for M60-UCD1 and M59-UCD3 despite X-ray detections in both these sources. The BH mass and nuclear light profile of M59-UCD3 suggests it is the tidally stripped remnant of a $\sim$10$^{9-10}$ M$_\odot$ galaxy., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, 5 tables

We present mass estimates of supermassive black holes in six nearby fast rotating early-type galaxies (NGC4339, NGC4434, NGC4474, NGC4551, NGC4578 and NGC4762) with effective stellar velocity dispersion around 100 km/s. We use near-infrared laser-guide adaptive optics observations with the GEMINI/NIFS to derive stellar kinematics in the galactic nuclei, and SAURON observations from the ATLAS3D Survey for large-scale kinematics. We build axisymmetric Jeans anisotropic models and axisymmetric Schwarzschild dynamical models. Both modelling approaches recover consistent orbital anisotropies and black hole masses within 1-2sigma confidence level, except for one galaxy for which the difference is just above the 3sigma level. Two black holes (NGC4339 and NGC4434) are amongst the largest outliers from the current black hole mass - velocity dispersion relation, with masses of $(4.3^{+4.8}_{-2.3})\times10^7$ and $(7.0^{+2.0}_{-2.8})\times10^7$ M$_\odot$, respectively ($3\sigma$ confidence level). The black holes in NGC4578 and NGC4762 lie on the scaling relation with masses of $(1.9^{+0.6}_{-1.4})\times10^7$ and $(2.3^{+0.9}_{-0.6})\times10^7$ M$_\odot$, respectively (3sigma confidence level). For two galaxies (NGC4474 and NGC4551) we are able to place upper limits on their black holes masses ($<7\times10^6$ and $<5\times10^6$ M$_\odot$, respectively, $3\sigma$ confidence level). The kinematics for these galaxies clearly indicate central velocity dispersion drops within a radius of 35 pc and 80 pc, respectively. These drops cannot be associated with cold stellar structures and our data do not have the resolution to exclude black holes with masses an order of magnitude smaller than the predictions. We measure $\lambda_{R_e}$, a proxy for galaxy specific stellar angular momentum within one effective radius, and the ellipticity, $\epsilon$, for about 2300 galaxies of all morphological types observed with integral field spectroscopy as part of the MaNGA survey, the largest such sample to date. We use the $(\lambda_{R_e}, \epsilon)$ diagram to separate early-type galaxies into fast and slow rotators. We also visually classify each galaxy according to its optical morphology and two-dimensional stellar velocity field. Comparing these classifications to quantitative $\lambda_{R_e}$ measurements reveals tight relationships between angular momentum and galaxy structure. In order to account for atmospheric seeing, we use realistic models of galaxy kinematics to derive a general approximate analytic correction for $\lambda_{R_e}$. Thanks to the size of the sample and the large number of massive galaxies, we unambiguously detect a clear bimodality in the $(\lambda_{R_e}, \epsilon)$ diagram which may result from fundamental differences in galaxy assembly history. There is a sharp secondary density peak inside the region of the diagram with low $\lambda_{R_e}$ and $\epsilon < 0.4$, previously suggested as the definition for slow rotators. Most of these galaxies are visually classified as non-regular rotators and have high velocity dispersion. The intrinsic bimodality must be stronger, as it tends to be smoothed by noise and inclination. The large sample of slow rotators allows us for the first time to unveil a secondary peak at +/-90 degrees in their distribution of the misalignments between the photometric and kinematic position angles. We perform full spectrum fitting stellar population analysis and Jeans Anisotropic modelling (JAM) of the stellar kinematics for about 2000 early-type galaxies (ETGs) and spiral galaxies from the MaNGA DR14 sample. Galaxies with different morphologies are found to be located on a remarkably tight mass plane which is close to the prediction of the virial theorem, extending previous results for ETGs. By examining an inclined projection (`the mass-size' plane), we find that spiral and early-type galaxies occupy different regions on the plane, and their stellar population properties (i.e. age, metallicity and stellar mass-to-light ratio) vary systematically along roughly the direction of velocity dispersion, which is a proxy for the bulge fraction. Galaxies with higher velocity dispersions have typically older ages, larger stellar mass-to-light ratios and are more metal rich, which indicates that galaxies increase their bulge fractions as their stellar populations age and become enriched chemically. We present results on the structural properties of massive passive galaxies in three clusters at $1.39

We present a detailed study of the nuclear star clusters (NSCs) and massive black holes (BHs) of four of the nearest low-mass early-type galaxies: M32, NGC205, NGC5012, and NGC5206. We measure dynamical masses of both the BHs and NSCs in these galaxies using Gemini/NIFS or VLT/SINFONI stellar kinematics, Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging, and Jeans Anisotropic Models. We detect massive BHs in M32, NGC5102, and NGC5206, while in NGC205, we find only an upper limit. These BH mass estimates are consistent with previous measurements in M32 and NGC205, while those in NGC5102 and NGC5206 are estimated for the first time, and both found to be $<$$10^6~M_{\odot}$. This adds to just a handful of galaxies with dynamically measured sub-million $M_{\odot}$ central BHs. Combining these BH detections with our recent work on NGC404's BH, we find that 80\% (4/5) of nearby, low-mass ($10^9-10^{10}~M_{\odot}$; $\sigma_{\star}\sim20-70$ km/s) early-type galaxies host BHs. Such a high occupation fraction suggests the BH seeds formed in the early epoch of cosmic assembly likely resulted in abundant seeds, favoring a low-mass seed mechanism of the remnants, most likely from the first generation of massive stars. We find dynamical masses of the NSCs ranging from $2-80\times10^6~M_{\odot}$ and compare these masses to scaling relations for NSCs based primarily on photometric mass estimates. Color gradients suggest younger stellar populations lie at the centers of the NSCs in three of the four galaxies (NGC205, NGC5102, and NGC5206), while the morphology of two are complex and are best-fit with multiple morphological components (NGC5102 and NGC5206). We present data for 16 galaxies in the overdensity JKCS 041 at $z \simeq 1.80$ as part of the K-band Multi-Object Spectrograph (KMOS) Cluster Survey (KCS). With 20-hour integrations, we have obtained deep absorption-line spectra from which we derived velocity dispersions for seven quiescent galaxies. We combined photometric parameters derived from Hubble Space Telescope images with the dispersions to construct a fundamental plane (FP) for quiescent galaxies in JKCS 041. From the zero-point evolution of the FP, we derived a formation redshift for the galaxies of $z_{form} = 3.0\pm0.3$, corresponding to a mean age of $1.4\pm0.2$ Gyrs. We tested the effect of structural and velocity dispersion evolution on our FP zero point and found a negligible contribution when using dynamical mass-normalized parameters ($\sim 3\%$), but a significant contribution from stellar-mass-normalized parameters ($\sim 42 \%$). From the relative velocities of the galaxies, we probed the three-dimensional structure of these 16 confirmed members of JKCS 041, and found that a group of galaxies in the south west of the overdensity had systematically higher velocities. We derived ages for the galaxies in the different groups from the FP. We found the east-extending group had typically older galaxies ($2.1\substack{+0.3\\-0.2}$ Gyrs), than those in the south-west group ($0.3\pm0.2$ Gyrs). Although based on small numbers, the overdensity dynamics, morphology, and age results could indicate that JKCS 041 is in formation and may comprise two merging groups of galaxies. As part of the mm-Wave Interferometric Survey of Dark Object Masses (WISDOM) project we present an estimate of the mass of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) in the nearby fast-rotating early-type galaxy NGC4429, that is barred and has a boxy/peanut-shaped bulge. This estimate is based on Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) cycle-2 observations of the 12CO(3-2) emission line with a linear resolution of ~13 pc (0"18x0"14). NGC4429 has a relaxed, flocculent nuclear disc of molecular gas that is truncated at small radii, likely due to the combined effects of gas stability and tidal shear. The warm/dense 12CO(3-2) emitting gas is confined to the inner parts of this disc, likely again because the gas becomes more stable at larger radii, preventing star formation. The gas disc has a low velocity dispersion of 2.2$^{+0.68}_{-0.65}$ km/s. Despite the inner truncation of the gas disc, we are able to model the kinematics of the gas and estimate a mass of (1.5$\pm0.1^{+0.15}_{-0.35}$)$\times$10$^8$ Msun for the SMBH in NGC4429 (where the quoted uncertainties reflect the random and systematic uncertainties, respectively), consistent with a previous upper limit set using ionised gas kinematics. We confirm that the V-band mass-to-light ratio changes by ~30% within the inner 400 pc of NGC4429, as suggested by other authors. We present dynamical measurements of the central mass-to-light ratio ($M/L$) of a sample of 27 low-mass early-type ATLAS$^{3D}$ galaxies. We consider all ATLAS$^{3D}$ galaxies with 9.7$<$log(M$_\star/$M$_\odot)$$<$10.5 in our analysis, selecting out galaxies with available high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data, and eliminating galaxies with significant central color gradients or obvious dust features. We use the HST images to derive mass models for these galaxies and combine these with the central velocity dispersion values from ATLAS$^{3D}$ data to obtain a central dynamical $M/L$ estimate. These central dynamical $M/L$s are higher than dynamical $M/L$s derived at larger radii and stellar population estimates of the galaxy centers in $\sim$80\% of galaxies, with a median enhancement of $\sim$14\% and a statistical significance of 3.3$\sigma$. We show that the enhancement in the central $M/L$ is best described either by the presence of black holes in these galaxies or by radial IMF variations. Assuming a black hole model, we derive black hole masses for the sample of galaxies. In two galaxies, NGC 4458 and NGC 4660, the data suggests significantly over-massive BHs, while in most others only upper limits are obtained. We also show that the level of $M/L$ enhancements we see in these early-type galaxy nuclei are consistent with the larger enhancements seen in ultracompact dwarf galaxies (UCDs), supporting the scenario where massive UCDs are created by stripping galaxies of these masses., Comment: Accepted to ApJ, 17 pages, 13 figures
