Cognitive scientists have paid very little attention to magic as a distinctly human activity capable of creating situations that are considered impossible because they violate expectations and conclude with the apparent transgression of well-established cognitive and natural laws. This illusory experience of the "impossible" entails a very particular cognitive dissonance that is followed by a subjective and complex "magical experience". Here, from a perspective inspired by visual neuroscience and ecological cognition, we propose a set of seven fundamental cognitive phenomena (from attention and perception to memory and decision-making) plus a previous pre-sensory stage that magicians interfere with during the presentation of their effects. By doing so, and using as an example the deconstruction of a classic trick, we show how magic offers novel and powerful insights to study human cognition. Furthermore, live magic performances afford to do so in tasks that are more ecological and context-dependent than those usually exploited in artificial laboratory settings. We thus believe that some of the mysteries of how the brain works may be trapped in the split realities present in every magic effect.

The COBATEST Network of Community-Based Voluntary Counselling and STI/HIV Testing (CBVCT) services was created to standardise monitoring and evaluation of CBVCT services across Europe. This study aims to assess the quality of data collected in the network from 2015 to 2016. A survey was completed by 34 COBATEST Network members and an evaluation was performed of data quality based on three dimensions: transcription validity, completeness and consistency. The weakest area that we identified was data management processes. Only 8.8% of services had a written procedure to address data quality errors, 29.4% had procedures in place to resolve discrepancies and 35.3% performed quality control. We found that 41.2% of services utilised the COBATEST data, 11.8% made decisions based on the COBATEST data and 61.8% analysed their data in an independent manner for internal purposes. We conclude that while services have reliable data to support planning and management of services, improvements to quality procedures would ensure data are translated into evidence. This evidence would support further expansion of CBVCT services in the EU/EEA, including the integration of CBVCT-generated data into national surveillance systems.

Context. An unambiguous identification of the carriers of the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) would provide important clues to the life cycle of interstellar matter. The so-called C2-DIBs are a class of very weak bands that fall in the blue part of the optical spectrum and are associated with high column densities of the C2 molecule. DIB profile structures constrain potential molecular carriers, but their measurement requires high signal-to-noise, high-resolution spectra and the use of sightlines without Doppler splitting, as typical for a single-cloud situation.Aims. Spectra from the ESO Diffuse Interstellar Bands Large Exploration Survey (EDIBLES) conducted at the Very Large Telescope (ESO/Paranal) were explored to identify single-cloud and high C2 column sightlines, extract the corresponding C2-DIBs and study their strengths and profiles, and to investigate in detail any sub-structures.Methods. The target selection was made based on profile-fitting of the 3303 and 5895 Å Nai doublets and the detection of C2 lines. The C2 (2-0) (8750–8849 Å) Phillips system was fitted using a physical model of the host cloud. C2 column densities, temperatures as well as gas densities were derived for each sightline.Results. Eighteen known C2-DIBs and eight strong non-C2 DIBs were extracted towards eight targets, comprising seven single-cloud and one multi-cloud line-of-sights. Correlational studies revealed a tight association of the former group with the C2 columns, whereas the non-C2 DIBs are primarily correlated with reddening. We report three new weak diffuse band candidates at 4737.5, 5547.4 and 5769.8 Å. We show for the first time that at least 14 C2-DIBs exhibit spectral sub-structures which are consistent with unresolved rotational branches of molecular carriers. The variability of their peak separations among the bands for a given sightline implies that their carriers are different molecules with quite different sizes. We also illustrate how profiles of the same DIB vary among targets and as a function of physical parameters, and provide tables defining the sub-structures to be compared with future models and experimental results.

The ESO Diffuse Interstellar Band Large Exploration Survey (EDIBLES) is a Large Programme that is collecting high-signal-to-noise (S/N) spectra with UVES of a large sample of O and B-type stars covering a large spectral range. The goal of the programme is to extract a unique sample of high-quality interstellar spectra from these data, representing different physical and chemical environments, and to characterise these environments in great detail. An important component of interstellar spectra is the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs), a set of hundreds of unidentified interstellar absorption lines. With the detailed line-of-sight information and the high-quality spectra, EDIBLES will derive strong constraints on the potential DIB carrier molecules. EDIBLES will thus guide the laboratory experiments necessary to identify these interstellar “mystery molecules”, and turn DIBs into powerful diagnostics of their environments in our Milky Way Galaxy and beyond. The Planck mission has shown that dust properties of the diffuse ISM varies on a large scale and we present variability on a small scales. We present FORS spectro-polarimetry obtained by the Large Interstellar Polarisation Survey along 60 sight-lines. We fit these combined with extinction data by a silicate and carbon dust model with grain sizes ranging from the molecular to the sub-mic. domain. Large silicates of prolate shape account for the observed polarisation. For 37 sight-lines we complement our data set with UVES high-resolution spectra that establish the presence of single or multiple clouds along individual sight-lines. We find correlations between extinction and Serkowski parameters with the dust model and that the presence of multiple clouds depolarises the incoming radiation. However, there is a degeneracy in the dust model between alignment efficiency and the elongation of the grains. This degeneracy can be broken by combining polarization data in the optical-to-submm. This is of wide general interest as it improves the accuracy of deriving dust masses. We show that a flat IR\/submm polarisation spectrum with substantial polarisation is predicted from dust models.

Massive stars disrupt their natal molecular cloud material by dissociating molecules, ionizing atoms and molecules, and heating the gas and dust. These processes drive the evolution of interstellar matter in our Galaxy and throughout the Universe from the era of vigorous star formation at redshifts of 1-3, to the present day. Much of this interaction occurs in Photo-Dissociation Regions (PDRs) where far-ultraviolet photons of these stars create a largely neutral, but warm region of gas and dust. PDR emission dominates the IR spectra of star-forming galaxies and also provides a unique tool to study in detail the physical and chemical processes that are relevant for most of the mass in inter- and circumstellar media including diffuse clouds, protoplanetary disk- and molecular cloud surfaces, globules, planetary nebulae, and starburst galaxies. We propose to provide template datasets designed to identify key PDR characteristics in JWST spectra in order to guide the preparation of Cycle 2 proposals on star-forming regions in our Galaxy and beyond. We plan to obtain the first spatially resolved, high spectral resolution IR observations of a PDR using NIRCam, NIRSpec, and MIRI. These data will test widely used theoretical models and extend them into the JWST era. We have engaged the broader community as exemplified by the supporting large international team of 138 scientists. We will assist the community interested in JWST observations of PDRs through science-enabling products that will guide observational planning and allow fast data analysis. We will train the community through telecons and dedicated workshops.

Introduction Lumbar disk herniation may result in a radiculopathic pattern of symptoms. Consideration for a primary biochemical inducement of pain over a mechanical mechanism is a contemporary topic of spinal research. However, the exact pathomechanism by which a degenerative intervertebral disk leads to neural inflammation and pain has not been determined. Using modern techniques of chemical analysis, biochemical markers can be identified which participate in the degenerative cascade, and possibly with the onset of pain. The purpose of this research is to identify potential biochemical markers through a novel technique of epidural space lavage that may be helpful in understanding the pathogeneses of pain in the presence of intervertebral disk degeneration and herniation. Methods Fifty consecutive patients with acute radiculopathy secondary to a symptomatic herniated lumbar intervertebral disk or spinal stenosis, and who were indicated for epidural steroid injection were identified. Additionally, 3 volunteers with no history of back pain or radiculopathy volunteered to undergo epidural lavage. After needle insertion, a lavage followed by fluid aspiration of the epidural space at the level of the disc herniation, in the case of the symptomatic patients, was performed using normal saline, before the instillation of corticosteroids. The fluid samples were frozen at -20 degrees C until analysis. A biochemical evaluation for a battery of cytokines was undertaken (IL-1beta, IL-1ra, IL-2, IL-2R, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-7, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12p40, IL-13, IL-15, IL-17, TNF-alpha, IFN-alpha, IFN-gamma, GM-CSF, MIP-1alpha, MIP-1beta, IP-10, MIG, Eotaxin, RANTES, and MCP-1, and neuropeptides) using high-resolution multiplex bead immunoassays and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Additionally, polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was carried out to verify the presence of serum proteins. Results Despite the presence of amino acids/serum proteins in the epidural lavage fluid, none of the aforementioned mediators were isolated in a quantifiable concentration using the ELISA techniques with >5 pg/mL resolution. Discussion The current proteomics array technology was not able to detect critical levels of biochemical markers present in the epidural space through the mentioned lavage technique. This lack of detection could be due to the absence of the factors in this environment or the inability of the technique to obtain or detect factors which may be present. Conclusion Although a novel approach, the current study was unable to identify the presence of a series of inflammatory peptides in the epidural lavage of patients with symptomatic radicular pain due to herniated disc disease. We recommend alternative experimental designs than the one we pursued for definitively identifying potential sources of pain generators.

We searched the Spitzer Space Telescope data archive for Galactic planetary nebulae (PNe), that show the characteristic 17.4 and um features due to C60, also known as buckminsterfullerene. Out of 338 objects with Spitzer/IRS data, we found eleven C60-containing PNe, six of which (Hen2-68, IC2501, K3-62, M1-6, M1-9, and SaSt2-3) are new detections. We analyzed the spectra, along with ancillary data, using the photo-ionization code CLOUDY to establish the atomic line fluxes, and determine the properties of the radiation field, as set by the effective temperature of the central star. In addition, we measured the infrared spectral features due to dust grains. We find that the Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) profile over 6-9 um in these C60-bearing carbon-rich PNe is of the more chemically-processed class A. The intensity ratio of 3.3 um to 11.3 um PAH indicates that the number of C-atoms per PAH in C60-containing PNe is small compared to that in non-C60 PNe. The Spitzer spectra also show broad dust features around 11 and 30 um. Analysis of the 30-um feature shows that it is strongly correlated with the continuum, and we propose that a single carbon-based carrier is responsible for both the continuum and the feature. The strength of the 11-um feature is correlated to the temperature of the dust, suggesting that it is at least partially due to a solid-state carrier. The chemical abundances of C60-containing PNe can be explained by AGB nucleosynthesis models for initially 1.5-2.5 Msun stars with Z=0.004. We plotted the locations of C60-containing PNe on a face-on map of the Milky Way and we found that most of these PNe are outside the solar circle, consistent with low metallicity values.
