Search

The axion-nucleon coupling enables the production of axions through the decay of excited ${}^{57}\textrm{Fe}$ isotopes, and axions produced in the Sun through this process are often a target of helioscope searches. We show for the first time that hot, highly magnetic white dwarfs such as ZTF J1901+1458 are a viable target to search for the X-ray signature of axions that were produced by the ${}^{57}\textrm{Fe}$ transition in the core and then converted to photons in the magnetosphere. We calculate that a 100 ks observation of ZTF J1901+1458 with NuSTAR would constrain the coupling of axions to nucleons and photons at a level below the bounds of both current and future planned helioscopes., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

Using observations of X-ray pulsar Her X-1 by the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer, we report on a highly significant ($>17\sigma$) detection of the polarization signal from an accreting neutron star. The observed degree of the linear polarization of $\sim$10\% is found to be far below theoretical expectations for this object, and stays low throughout the spin cycle of the pulsar. Both the polarization degree and the angle exhibit variability with pulse phase, which allowed us to measure the pulsar spin position angle 57(2) deg and the magnetic obliquity 12(4) deg, which is an essential step towards detailed modelling of the intrinsic emission of X-ray pulsars. Combining our results with the optical polarimetric data, we find that the spin axis of the neutron star and the angular momentum of the binary orbit are misaligned by at least $\sim$20 deg, which is a strong argument in support of the models explaining stability of the observed super-orbital variability with the precession of the neutron star., Comment: 31 pages 7 figures, published

Magnetic CVs are luminous Galactic X-ray sources but have been difficult to find in purely optical surveys due to their lack of outburst behavior. The eROSITA telescope aboard the Spektr-RG (SRG) mission is conducting an all-sky X-ray survey and recently released the public eROSITA Final Equatorial Depth Survey (eFEDS) catalog. We crossmatched the eFEDS catalog with photometry from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) and discovered two new magnetic cataclysmic variables (CVs). We obtained high-cadence optical photometry and phase-resolved spectroscopy for each magnetic CV candidate and found them both to be polars. Among the newly discovered magnetic CVs is ZTFJ0850+0443, an eclipsing polar with orbital period $P_\textrm{orb} = 1.72$ hr, white dwarf mass $M_\textrm{WD} = 0.81 \pm 0.08 M_\odot$ and accretion rate $\dot{M} \sim 10^{-11} M_\odot$/yr. We suggest that ZTFJ0850+0443 is a low magnetic field strength polar, with $B_\textrm{WD} \lesssim 10$ MG. We also discovered a non-eclipsing polar, ZTFJ0926+0105, with orbital period $P_\textrm{orb} = 1.48$ hr, magnetic field strength $B_\textrm{WD} \gtrsim 26$ MG, and accretion rate $\dot{M} \sim 10^{-12} M_\odot$/yr., Comment: Submitted to ApJ

We report on the first detection of linearly polarized x-ray emission from an ultra-magnetized neutron star with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). The IXPE 35 observations of the anomalous x-ray pulsar 4U 0142+61 reveal a linear polarization degree of $(12\pm 1)\%$ throughout the IXPE 2--8 keV band. We detect a substantial variation of the polarization with energy: the degree is $(14\pm 1)\%$ at 2--4 keV and $(41\pm 7)\%$ at 5.5--8 keV, while it drops below the instrumental sensitivity around 4--5 keV, where the polarization angle swings by $\sim 90^\circ$. The IXPE observations give us completely new information about the properties of the neutron star surface and magnetosphere and lend further support to the presence of the quantum mechanical effect of vacuum birefringence., Comment: 32 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables

Over a dozen millisecond pulsars are ablating low-mass companions in close binary systems. In the original "black widow", the 8-hour orbital period eclipsing pulsar PSR J1959+2048 (PSR B1957+20), high energy emission originating from the pulsar is irradiating and may eventually destroy a low-mass companion. These systems are not only physical laboratories that reveal the dramatic result of exposing a close companion star to the relativistic energy output of a pulsar, but are also believed to harbour some of the most massive neutron stars, allowing for robust tests of the neutron star equation of state. Here, we report observations of ZTF J1406+1222, a wide hierarchical triple hosting a 62-minute orbital period black widow candidate whose optical flux varies by a factor of more than 10. ZTF J1406+1222 pushes the boundaries of evolutionary models, falling below the 80 minute minimum orbital period of hydrogen-rich systems. The wide tertiary companion is a rare low metallicity cool subdwarf star, and the system has a Galactic halo orbit consistent with passing near the Galactic center, making it a probe of formation channels, neutron star kick physics, and binary evolution., Comment: 63 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables, published in Nature on May 4, 2022

Gaia Data Release 2 revealed a population of ultramassive white dwarfs on the Q branch that are moving anomalously fast for a local disc population with their young photometric ages. As the velocity dispersion of stars in the local disc increases with age, a proposed explanation of these white dwarfs is that they experience a cooling delay that causes current cooling models to infer photometric ages much younger than their true ages. To explore this explanation, we investigate the kinematics of ultramassive white dwarfs within 200 pc of the Sun using the improved Gaia Early Data Release 3 observations. We analyse the transverse motions of 0.95 - 1.25 $M_\odot$ white dwarfs, subdivided by mass and age, and determine the distributions of the three-dimensional components of the transverse velocities. The results are compared to expectations based on observed kinematics of local main-sequence stars. We find a population of photometrically young ($\sim$ 0.5 - 1.5 Gyr) ultramassive ($\sim$ 1.15 - 1.25 $M_\odot$) white dwarfs for which the transverse velocity component in the direction of Galactic rotation is more dispersed than for local disc stars of any age; thus, it is too dispersed to be explained by any cooling delay in white dwarfs originating from the local disc. Furthermore, the dispersion ratio of the velocity components in the Galactic plane for this population is also inconsistent with a local disc origin. Magnetic resonance elastography is a motion-sensitive image modality that allows to measure in vivo tissue displacement fields in response to mechanical excitations. This paper investigates a data assimilation approach for reconstructing tissue displacement and pressure fields in an in silico brain model from partial elastography data. The data assimilation is based on a parametrized-background data weak methodology, in which the state of the physical system -- tissue displacements and pressure fields -- is reconstructed from the available data assuming an underlying poroelastic biomechanics model. For this purpose, a physics-informed manifold is built by sampling the space of parameters describing the tissue model close to their physiological ranges to simulate the corresponding poroelastic problem, and computing a reduced basis via Proper Orthogonal Decomposition. Displacements and pressure reconstruction is sought in a reduced space after solving a minimization problem that encompasses both the structure of the reduced-order model and the available measurements. The proposed pipeline is validated using synthetic data obtained after simulating the poroelastic mechanics of a physiological brain. The numerical experiments demonstrate that the framework can exhibit accurate joint reconstructions of both displacement and pressure fields. The methodology can be formulated for an arbitrary resolution of available displacement data from pertinent images.

We present a systematic study of the unbinned, photon-by-photon likelihood technique which can be used as an alternative method to analyse phase-dependent, X-ray spectro-polarimetric observations obtained with IXPE and other photo-electric polarimeters. We apply the unbinned technique to models of the luminous X-ray pulsar Hercules X-1, for which we produce simulated observations using ixpeobssim package. We consider minimal knowledge about the actual physical process responsible for the polarized emission from the accreting pulsar and assume that the observed phase-dependent polarization angle can be described by the rotating vector model. Using the unbinned technique, the detector's modulation factor, and the polarization information alone, we found that both the rotating vector model and the underlying spectro-polarimetry model can reconstruct equally well the geometric configuration angles of the accreting pulsar. However, the measured polarization fraction becomes biased with respect to underlying model unless the energy dispersion and effective area of the detector are also taken into account. To this end, we present an energy-dispersed likelihood estimator that is proved to be unbiased. For different analyses, we obtain posterior distributions from multiple ixpeobssim realizations and show that the unbinned technique yields $\sim 10\%$ smaller error bars than the binned technique. The maximum mass of a star that can produce a white dwarf (WD) is an important astrophysical quantity. One of the best approaches to establishing this limit is to search for WDs in young star clusters in which only massive stars have had time to evolve and where the mass of the progenitor can be established from the cooling time of the WD together with the age of the cluster. Searches in young Milky Way clusters have not thus far yielded WD members more massive than about 1.1$~M_{\odot}$, well below the Chandrasekhar mass of $1.38~M_{\odot}$, nor progenitors with masses in excess of about $6~M_{\odot}$. However, the hunt for potentially massive WDs that escaped their cluster environs is yielding interesting candidates. To expand the cluster sample further, we used HST to survey four young and massive star clusters in the Magellanic Clouds for bright WDs that could have evolved from stars as massive as 10$~M_{\odot}$. We located five potential WD candidates in the oldest of the four clusters examined, the first extragalactic single WDs thus far discovered. We argue that measurements of X-ray polarization using the recently launched Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer will answer many open questions about magnetars in particular the physical state of their surfaces, whether vacuum birefringence exists, and the nature of the hard X-ray emission from these objects. It has been recently suggested that white dwarfs generate magnetic fields in a process analogous to the Earth. The crystallization of the core creates a compositional inversion that drives convection, and combined with rotation, this can sustain a magnetic dynamo. We reanalyse the dynamo mechanism, arising from the slow crystallization of the core, and find convective turnover times $t_{\rm conv}$ of weeks to months - longer by orders of magnitude than previously thought. With white dwarf spin periods $P\ll t_{\rm conv}$, crystallization-driven dynamos are almost always in the fast rotating regime, where the magnetic field $B$ is at least in equipartition with the convective motion and is possibly further enhanced by a factor of $B\propto (t_{\rm conv}/P)^{1/2}$, depending on the assumed dynamo scaling law. We track the growth of the crystallized core using MESA and compute the magnetic field $B(T_{\rm eff})$ as a function of the white dwarf's effective temperature $T_{\rm eff}$. We compare this prediction with observations and show that crystallization-driven dynamos can explain some - but not all - of the $\sim$MG magnetic fields measured for single white dwarfs, as well as the stronger fields measured for white dwarfs in cataclysmic variables, which were spun up by mass accretion to short $P$. Over the next year, a new era of observations of compact objects in X-ray polarization will commence. Among the key targets for the upcoming Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer mission, will be the magnetars 4U 0142+61 and 1RXS J170849.0-400910. Here we present the first detailed predictions of the expected polarization from these sources that incorporate realistic models of emission physics at the surface (gaseous or condensed), the temperature distribution on the surface, general relativity, quantum electrodynamics and scattering in the magnetosphere, and also account for the broadband spectral energy distribution of these sources from below 1 keV to nearly 100 keV. We find that either atmospheres or condensed surfaces can account for the emission at a few keV; in both cases either a small hot polar cap or scattering is required to account for the emission at 5-10 keV, and above 10 keV scattering by a hard population of electrons can account for the rising power in the hard X-rays observed in many magnetars in quiescence. Although these different scenarios result in very similar spectral energy distributions, they generate dramatically different polarization signatures from 2-10 keV, which is the range of sensitivity of the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer. We searched through the entire Gaia EDR3 candidate white dwarf catalogue for stars with proper motions and positions that are consistent with the stars having escaped from the Alpha Persei cluster within the past 81~Myr, the age of the cluster. In this search we found five candidate white dwarf escapees from Alpha Persei and obtained spectra for all five. We confirm that three are massive white dwarfs sufficiently young to have originated in the cluster. All three are more massive than any white dwarf previously associated with a cluster using Gaia astrometry, and possess some of the most massive progenitors. In particular, the white dwarf Gaia~EDR3~4395978097863572, which lies within 25~pc of the cluster centre, has a mass of about 1.20 solar masses and evolved from an 8.5 solar-mass star, pushing the upper limit for white dwarf formation from a single massive star, while still leaving a substantial gap between the resulting white dwarf mass and the Chandrasekhar mass., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures. We searched through a seven-million cubic-parsec volume surrounding each of the four nearest young open clusters with ages from 40 to 80 Myr to identify both the current and past members of the clusters within the Gaia EDR3 dataset. We find over 1,700 current cluster members and over 1,200 candidate escapees. Many of these candidates lie well in front and behind the cluster from our point of view, so formerly they were considered cluster members, but their parallaxes put them more than 10 pc from the centre of the cluster today. We found two candidate high-mass white dwarfs that may have escaped from the alpha Persei cluster and several candidate main-sequence-white-dwarf binaries associated with the younger clusters, NGC 2451A, IC 2391 and IC 2602. All of these objects require spectroscopic confirmation. Using these samples of escapee candidates, we develop and implement a novel technique to determine the ages of these clusters and the Pleiades using kinematics with typical uncertainties of $5-7$ Myr. For all five clusters, this kinematic age is younger than the age estimated with isochrones but within the uncertainties of the isochrone fitting. We find for the clusters that travel far from the Galactic plane (the Pleiades, NGC 2451A and IC 2602), the formation of the cluster coincides with when the cluster was in the Galactic plane within a few Myr, supporting these age determinations., Comment: 14 pages, 16 figures. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:2110.03837

We search through an eight-million cubic-parsec volume surrounding the Pleiades star cluster and the Sun to identify both the current and past members of the Pleiades cluster within the Gaia EDR3 dataset. We find nearly 1,300 current cluster members and 289 former cluster candidates. Many of these candidates lie well in front or behind the cluster from our point of view, so formerly they were considered cluster members, but their parallaxes put them more than 10 pc from the centre of the cluster today. Over the past 100 Myr we estimate that the cluster has lost twenty percent of its mass including two massive white dwarf stars and the $\alpha^2$ Canum Venaticorum-type variable star, 41 Tau. All three white dwarfs associated with the cluster are massive ($1.01-1.06~\textrm{M}_\odot$) and have progenitors with main-sequence masses of about six solar masses. Although we did not associate any giant stars with the cluster, the cooling time of the oldest white dwarf of 60~Myr gives a firm lower limit on the age of the cluster., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures

We determine the distribution of cooling ages of massive Gaia EDR3 white dwarfs identified with over 90% probability within 200 pc and with mass in the range 0.95-1.25 $M_\odot$. Using three sets of publicly available models, we consider sub-samples of these white dwarfs sorted into three equally spaced mass bins. Under the assumption of a constant white dwarf formation rate, we find an excess of white dwarfs both along the Q branch and below it, corresponding respectively to stars that are in the process of freezing and those that are completely frozen. We compare the cooling age distributions for each of these bins to the recently determined time-varying star formation rate of Gaia DR2 main sequence stars. For white dwarfs in the two lightest mass bins, spanning the mass range 0.95-1.15 $M_\odot$, we find that the cumulative cooling age distribution is statistically consistent with the expectation from the star formation rate. For white dwarfs in the heaviest mass bin, 1.15-1.25 $M_\odot$, we find that their cumulative distribution is inconsistent with the star formation rate for all of the models considered; instead, we find that their cooling age distribution is well fitted by a linear combination of the distribution expected for single stellar evolution products and the distribution expected for double white dwarf merger products when approximately 40-50% of the 1.15-1.25 $M_\odot$ white dwarfs that formed over the past 4 Gyr are produced through double white dwarf mergers., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures; published in MNRAS; minor edits to text

White dwarfs represent the last stage of evolution of stars with mass less than about eight times that of the Sun and, like other stars, are often found in binaries. If the orbital period of the binary is short enough, energy losses from gravitational-wave radiation can shrink the orbit until the two white dwarfs come into contact and merge. Depending on the component masses, the merger can lead to a supernova of type Ia or result in a massive white dwarf. In the latter case, the white dwarf remnant is expected to be highly magnetised because of the strong magnetic dynamo that should arise during the merger, and be rapidly spinning from the conservation of the orbital angular momentum. Here we report observations of a white dwarf, ZTF J190132.9+145808.7, that exhibits these properties, but to an extreme: a rotation period of 6.94 minutes, a magnetic field ranging between 600 megagauss and 900 megagauss over its surface, and a stellar radius of about 2,100 km, slightly larger than the radius of the Moon. Such a small radius implies that the star's mass is close to the maximum white-dwarf mass, or Chandrasekhar mass. We use the Relativistic Precession Model (RPM) (Stella et al. 1999a) and quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) observations from the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer to derive constraints on the properties of the black holes that power these sources and to test General Relativity (GR) in the strong field regime. We extend the techniques outlined by Motta et al. (2014a,b) to use pairs of simultaneously measured QPOs, rather than triplets, and extend the underlying spacetime metric to constrain potential deviations from the predictions of GR for astrophysical black holes. To do this, we modify the RPM model to a Kerr-Newman-deSitter spacetime and model changes in the radial, ecliptic, and vertical frequencies. We compare our models with X-ray data of XTE J1550-564 and GRO J1655-40 using robust statistical techniques to constrain the parameters of the black holes and the deviations from GR. AM CVn systems are a rare type of accreting binary that consists of a white dwarf and a helium-rich, degenerate donor star. Using the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), we searched for new AM CVn systems by focusing on blue, outbursting stars. We first selected outbursting stars using the ZTF alerts. We cross-matched the candidates with $Gaia$ and Pan-STARRS catalogs. The initial selection of candidates based on the $Gaia$ $BP$-$RP$ contains 1751 unknown objects. We used the Pan-STARRS $g$-$r$ and $r$-$i$ color in combination with the $Gaia$ color to identify 59 high-priority candidates. We obtained identification spectra of 35 sources, of which 18 are high priority candidates, and discovered 9 new AM CVn systems and one magnetic CV which shows only He-II lines. Using the outburst recurrence time, we estimate the orbital periods which are in the range of 29 to 50 minutes. We conclude that targeted followup of blue, outbursting sources is an efficient method to find new AM CVn systems, and we plan to followup all candidates we identified to systematically study the population of outbursting AM CVn systems., Comment: Submitted, comments and feedback welcome

We have carried out a search for massive white dwarfs (WDs) in the direction of young open star clusters using the Gaia DR2 database. The aim of this survey was to provide robust data for new and previously known high-mass WDs regarding cluster membership, to highlight WDs previously included in the Initial Final Mass Relation (IFMR) that are unlikely members of their respective clusters according to Gaia astrometry and to select an unequivocal WD sample that could then be compared with the host clusters' turnoff masses. All promising WD candidates in each cluster CMD were followed up with spectroscopy from Gemini in order to determine whether they were indeed WDs and derive their masses, temperatures and ages. In order to be considered cluster members, white dwarfs were required to have proper motions and parallaxes within 2, 3, or 4-$\sigma$ of that of their potential parent cluster based on how contaminated the field was in their region of the sky, have a cooling age that was less than the cluster age and a mass that was broadly consistent with the IFMR. A number of WDs included in current versions of the IFMR turned out to be non-members and a number of apparent members, based on Gaia's astrometric data alone, were rejected as their mass and/or cooling times were incompatible with cluster membership.
