Abstract

Vegetation clearing has been implicated as a major contributor to biodiversity loss. It therefore stands to reason that developers should face a regulatory requirement to assess potential impacts and to avoid, mitigate and compensate for loss of vegetation wherever proposed infrastructure developments impact on vegetation considered to be habitat for threatened species. Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) rely on accurate information to describe the distributions of threatened species within the footprint of proposed infrastructure developments, which is critical to ensuring appropriate mitigation of potentially deleterious impacts on these populations. EIA survey guidelines seek to determine species' presence accurately, while acknowledging the limits imposed by time and budget constraints. As such, the EIA guidelines may recommend: (1) stratifying the landscape based on previous knowledge of habitat variables relevant to a species; and (2) targeting survey effort to strata with high probability of occupancy. Here, we use koala Phascolarctos cinereus surveys as a case study to explore the extent to which application of EIA guidelines result in accurate occupancy estimates. We compared the presence/absence distribution across one landscape survey and three EIA surveys, and found that koala occupancy was not well predicted by koala habitat criteria widely used to inform sampling design. In the context of EIA, we provide an example of how targeting survey effort to strata with high probability of occupancy risks misrepresenting true occurrence patterns. A general issue with survey designs that rely on previous knowledge is that they self‐reinforce erroneous assumptions. Our findings stand as a warning that EIA might neither quantify the impact of proposed infrastructure developments adequately, nor inform the ensuing mitigation measures. Threatened species' protection in the face of infrastructure development will require new approaches to EIAs to ensure that providers are enabled to undertake comprehensive environmental surveys capable of detecting priority species. Abstract

3,4-Dihydroxyphenyl-L-alanine-modified poly(ethylene glycol) (mPEG-DOPA3) is a biologically-inspired material that exhibits unique adhesion properties. In this study, mPEG-DOPA3 thin films were prepared using a novel laser process known as matrix-assisted pulsed-laser evaporation (MAPLE). The films were examined using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, profilometry, antifouling studies and cell adhesion studies. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy data demonstrated that the main functional groups in the MAPLE-deposited mPEGDOPA3 films remained intact. Profilometry and atomic force microscopy studies confirmed that MAPLE provides excellent control over film morphology, as well as film thickness. High resolution patterns of mPEG-DOPA3 thin films were obtained by masking. MAPLE-deposited mPEG-DOPA3 thin films demonstrated an absence of cytotoxicity and acceptable antifouling properties against the marine bacterium Cytophaga lytica. MAPLE-deposited mPEG-DOPA3 thin films potentially have numerous biomedical and marine applications.

Abstract

International audience; Since 1994, there have been nine human Ebola-Zaire virus (EBOV) outbreaks in eastern Gabon and northwestern Congo [1–3]. A majority of them originated from the handling of ape carcasses found by local hunters [4]. The impact of Ebola-Zaire virus on great ape density is suspected to be high [2,5,6], but neither the demographic consequences of outbreaks nor the way the virus spreads within an ape population are well known. The large population of western lowland gorillas, Gorilla gorilla gorilla, monitored since 2001 at the Lokoué clearing, Odzala-Kokoua National Park, Congo, was affected in 2004, providing us with the opportunity to address both questions using an original statistical approach mixing capture–recapture and epidemiological models. The social structure of gorillas strongly influenced the spread of EBOV. Individuals living in groups appeared to be more susceptible than solitary males, with respective death rates of 97% and 77%. The outbreak lasted for around a year, during which gorilla social units (group or solitaries) got infected either directly from a reservoir or from contaminated individuals.

71. On the optimal density for real-time data gathering of spatio-temporal processes in sensor networks

Abstract

We consider sensor networks that measure spatio-temporal correlated processes. An important task in such settings is the reconstruction at a certain node, called the sink, of the data at all points of the field. We consider scenarios where data is time critical, so delay results in distortion, or suboptimal estimation and control. For the reconstruction, the only data available to the sink are the values measured at the nodes of the sensor network, and knowledge of the correlation structure: this results in spatial distortion of reconstruction. Also, for the sake of power efficiency, sensor nodes need to transmit their data by relaying through the other network nodes: this results in delay, and thus temporal distortion of reconstruction if time critical data is concerned. We study data gathering for the case of Gaussian processes in one- and two-dimensional grid scenarios, where we are able to write explicit expressions for the spatial and time distortion, and combine them into a single total distortion measure. We prove that, for various standard correlation structures, there is an optimal finite density of the sensor network for which the total distortion is minimized. Thus, when power efficiency and delay are both considered in data gathering, it is useless from the point of view of accuracy of the reconstruction to increase the number of sensors above a certain threshold that depends on the correlation structure characteristics.

Abstract

Objectives: To investigate the frequency, position, number and morphology of enamel pearls (EPs) using micro-CT (µCT) and to report a case of an EP mimicking an endodontic-periodontic lesion. Methods: Cone beam CT (CBCT) was performed in a patient to evaluate a radio-opaque nodule observed on the left maxillary first molar during the radiographic examination. Additionally, 23 EPs were evaluated regarding frequency, position, number and morphology by means of µCT. The results were statistically compared using the Student's t-test for independent samples. Results: 1 pearl was presented in 13 specimens, while 5 specimens presented 2 pearls. The most frequent location of the EPs was the furcation between the disto-buccal and the palatal roots of the maxillary molars. Overall. the mean major diameter, volume and surface area were 1.98 ± 0.85 mm, 1.76 ± 1.36 mm³ and 11.40 ± 7.59 mm², respectively, with no statistical difference between maxillary second and third molars (p > 0.05). In the case report, CBCT revealed an EP between the disto-buccal and the palatal roots of the maxillary first left molar associated with advanced localized periodontitis. The tooth was referred for extraction. Conclusions: EPs, located generally in the furcation area, were observed in 0.74% of the sample. The majority. was an enamel-dentin pearl type and no difference was found in maxillary second and third molars regarding diameter, volume and surface area of the pearls. In this report, the EP mimicked an endodontic-periodontic lesion and was a secondary aetiological factor in the periodontal breakdown. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We consider the problem of a sensor network tracking a moving target that exhibits a Markov model of mobility. The sensor nodes have adjustable power levels and the precision of the measurement of the target location depends on both the relative distance from the target to the measuring sensor, and on the sensing power level used by that sensor. An important issue in sensor networks is the power effi- ciency, thus we consider the optimization of a family of cost functions that include both the accuracy of a measurement and the power used to do that measurement. We define our problem as a control policy optimization for a partially observed Markov chain. For such scenarios, we derive optimal power control policies based only on partial observations of the target location, and propose hand-off techniques based on this policies.

We are exploring a new application of virtual and augmented reality for a novel direction in human-computer interaction named ‘cultural computing’, which aims to provide a new medium for cultural translation and subconscious metamorphosis. In this application both virtual and robotic agents are employed as an interactive dialogue figure. The main objective of this project is to create an interactive installation named ALICE that encourages people in Western culture to reflect on themselves, based on the narrative of ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ which address issues such as logic, rationality, and self.
