マルチクラウド環境でのワークロードの実行におけるコストと複雑さに幻滅した企業が、リソースをオンプレミスのデータセンターに戻すという、「クラウド回帰（cloud repatriation）」と呼ばれるトレンドについて、話題になったことを覚えているだろうか。 しかし、クラウドは健在であり、AIの波に乗り、絶好調である。 IDCの予測によると、世界全体のパブリッククラウドサービスへの支出は2024年には8050億ドルに達し、2028年には2倍になると見込まれている。5年間の年平均成長率は19.4%である。 IDCのデータおよびアナリティクス担当リサーチマネージャーであるアンドレア・ミノネ氏は、「人工知能の急速な進歩が、クラウド支出の急増を大きく後押ししている」と述べている。企業がAIプラットフォームの構築、テスト、展開をますます進める中、AIのイノベーションとクラウドインフラの相互依存関係が深まり、クラウドサービスがAIの開発と展開の基幹を担うようになっている。 ガートナーの数字は若干異なるかもしれないが、要点は同じである。ガートナーによると、世界中のエンドユーザーによるパブリッククラウドサービスへの支出は、2023年の5610億ドルから2024年には20.4%増の6754億ドルに成長すると予測されている。 「パブリッククラウドへの支出の継続的な成長は、汎用基盤モデルの継続的な作成と、ジェネリックAI対応アプリケーションの規模での提供拡大により、ジェネリックAIに大きく起因するものと考えられる」とガートナーのアナリスト、シド・ナグ氏は言う。「この継続的な成長により、パブリッククラウドのエンドユーザー支出は、今世紀末までに1兆ドルの大台を超えると予想される」 クラウドで展開される主要な市場トレンドから、企業ITがどのような恩恵を受けられるかを見てみよう。 クラウドでAI中心の代替案が登場 パブリッククラウドの市場シェアはほぼ変わらず、AWSが断トツの首位（32%）を維持し、Microsoft Azureが堅実に2位（23%）、Google Cloud Platformが大きく離された3位（12%）となっている。 これらビッグ3の合計は市場全体の67%を占め、アリババ、IBM、セールスフォース・ドットコムなどの中小企業はそれぞれ2～4%の範囲となっている。 唯一、大きな動きを見せているクラウドサービスプロバイダーはオラクルで、最新の市場調査によると、IBMを追い抜き、セールスフォース・ドットコムと並んでいる。それでも、オラクルの市場シェアはわずか3%にとどまっている。 このほぼ一定の状態にもかかわらず、ジェネレーティブAIの出現により、新興企業にとって市場機会がもたらされた。ビッグ3がレガシーデータセンターにAI能力を追加しようと躍起になっている一方で、新興企業はGPUベースの高性能データセンターを一から構築し、開発者がAIトレーニングや推論のためのGPUクラスタを立ち上げ、拡張できる機会を提供している。 これらの新興企業には、CoreWeave、Vultr、Nebius、Ori、Lambda Labsなどがある。 つまり、IT組織はベンダーロックインを回避し、選択したハイパースケーラーとの戦略的関係を維持しながら、既存の企業よりもはるかに高速で低コストの専用プラットフォームを謳う新興企業と提携し、ターゲットを絞ったAIプロジェクトを展開することができる。 AIがデータセンターへの投資を加速させる ハイパースケーラーが運営する大規模データセンターの数は、2024年初頭には1,000を超え、わずか4年前の2倍となった。シナジー・リサーチ・グループは、ハイパースケールデータセンターの総容量は今後4年間で再び倍増すると予測している。 「容量の増加は、新たに開設されたデータセンターの規模がさらに拡大することによってますます加速し、その規模拡大の主な理由として、生成型AI技術が挙げられる」とシナジー・リサーチは述べている。 当然のことながら、最も広大なデータセンターを展開しているのはAmazon、Microsoft、Googleの3社であり、ハイパースケールデータセンターの容量の60%を占めている。そして、ビッグ3の発表は次々と行われている。 マイクロソフトは、今後数年間でデータセンターの容量を倍増させる計画であると伝えられている。最近発表された、日本でのデータセンターインフラへの29億ドルの投資、英国での31.6億ドルの投資、インディアナ州での10億ドルのデータセンター建設、ウィスコンシン州での33億ドルの投資などである。 2024年の上半期だけでも、AWSはデータセンターへの投資として500億ドルを発表しており、その中にはバージニア州の複数の施設への350億ドル、インディアナ州への110億ドル、ミシシッピ州への100億ドルが含まれている。 また、Googleはカンザスシティ、アイオワ州シーダーラピッズ、バージニア州北部、さらにメキシコ、ギリシャ、マレーシア、ニュージーランド、ノルウェー、オーストリア、スウェーデンに新たなデータセンターを建設する計画を発表している。 さらに、ビッグ3がAIデータセンター需要を促進するために原子力発電に興味を持っているという最近の発表は言うまでもない。 企業ITにとってのメリットは、AIプロジェクトが計画から実装段階に移行するにつれ、ハイパースケーラーが大規模言語モデル（LLM）のワークロードに関連する膨大なデータセットを処理する能力を持つようになることだ。さらに、新しいパブリッククラウドデータセンターは、より多くのアベイラビリティゾーンを意味し、ユーザーがクラウドベースのアプリケーションやデータのソースに物理的に近接していないことによるレイテンシやパフォーマンスの問題が少なくなる。 業界クラウドは増加の一途をたどっている 業界クラウドは、特定の業界の独自の要件を満たすようカスタマイズされた特殊なクラウド環境であり、事前設定済みのソリューションを提供する。 [...]
