The interactions between plants and herbivores are among the most important ecological interactions in nature (Johnson 2011). Plants are sessile organisms and cannot run away from potential attackers, which are range from pathogenic microbes to grazing mammals. Among these attackers, arthropods, and in particular insects, comprise the largest and most diverse group of organisms with approximately 1-3 million species feeding on plants (Schoonhoven et al. 2005, Dicke 2009). Host-finding and acceptance or rejection of plants by herbivorous insects depend on their behavioral responses to physical and chemical plant features (Finch and Collier 2000). In this context, the insect-plant interactions have been metaphorically likened to warfare (Gonzalez and Nebert 1990, Berembaum and Zangerl 2008), and the process of reciprocating defense and counter-defense has been called a coevolutionary arms race (Whittaker and Feeny 1971). The concept of coevolution was first stated by Fraenknel (1953), who speculated that, as the majority of the green plants are essentially nutritionally equivalent, the so-called secondary metabolites are then likely to determine the patterns of host plant utilization. These concepts did not reach major scientific society until 1959 when Fraenkel published the famous article “The raison d’etre of secondary plant substances” in the journal Science. In this paper was cited the “first detailed description of a chemical insect-host plant relationship” 181reported by Verschaffelt (1911) about the ability of sinigrin, a mustard oil glycoside from Brassicaceae, to stimulate feeding by pierid caterpillars. Stegobium paniceum (L.) (Coleoptera: Anobiidae), the drugstore beetle, is one of the major pests for a wide variety of dry and durable stored agricultural products. Females of S. paniceum produce a sex pheromone, (2S,3R,1'R)-Stegobinone, that attracts males. Nevertheless, trapping experiments using the synthetic sex pheromone in many cases showed low levels of captures, perhaps because of isomerization of the pheromone compound in ambient conditions. To date, very few brands of commercially S. paniceum pheromone are available in the market. In this study, we evaluated in electrophysiological (EAG) and behavioral bioassays (two-choice olfactometer), the response of S. paniceum male and female to racemic mixtures of the sexual pheromone and its isomers. In particular were tested: 1) racemate A, (2S,3R,1'R)-Stegobinone plus the form 2R,3S,1'S; 2) racemate B, (2R,3S,1’S)-Stegobinone plus the form 2R,3S,1’R. The racemates were tested alone or in combination. Furthermore, a headspace collection of the colony (insects and substrate) was tested in olfactometer as candidate attractant to improve trap captures. EAG results showed that both racemic mixtures tested elicit dose-dependent responses in males but not in females. Olfactometer bioassays evidenced attraction response of males to racemate A tested alone or in combination with B. However, the racemate B alone elicited repellency in both sexes. Finally, the colony headspace extract elicited attraction in both sexes of S. paniceum.

The antennae of Trissolcus basalis, a solitary endoparasitoid of Nezara viridula (Heteroptera: Pen- tatomidae) eggs, have been investigated by SEM and TEM to map and describe the different types of chemosensilla and glands, some of which are reported for the first time in Parasitic Hymenoptera. A non chemoreceptor, sensillum campaniforme, has also been included since it is associateci with glands. A functional interpretation has been attempted correlating the antennal structures with mating and host recognition behaviours previously reported. SENSILLI CHEMIORECETTORI E GHIANDOLE ANTENNALI E LORO POSSIBILE SIGNIFICATO NEL COMPORTAMENTO RIPRODUTTIVO DI TRISSOLCUS BASALIS (WOLL.) (HYMENOPTERA, SCELIONIDAE) Il Trissolcus basalis è un parassitoide solitario delle uova di Nezara viridula L. Dalle ovature parassitizzate sfarfallano per primi i Trissolcus maschi, i quali, essendo capaci di individuare la presenza delle proprie femmine (per via di un feromone sessuale volatile) all'interno delle uova dell'ospite, si fermano singolarmente davanti all'uovo parassitizzato, in attesa che sfarfalli l'individuata compagna. Alla fuoriuscita di questa seguono speditamente un rapido corteggiamento da parte del maschio, il riconoscimento e la reciproca accettazione del partner e quindi la copula: il tutto in poche decine di secondi. La femmina fecondata va subito in cerca di un'ovatura idonea di Nezara per ovideporre lasciando infine un feromone di marcatura sulle singole uova da essa parassitizzate. Detto comportamento riproduttivo risulta chiaramente e necessariamente mediato dalle antenne di ambo i sessi nella prima parte, e della femmina, ovviamente, nella seconda parte. Attraverso uno studio in stretta collaborazione tra etologi (Bin, Colazza, Vinson) e morfologi (Isidoro, Solinas) vengono identificati sensilli chemiorecettori e ghiandole antennali implicati nei meccanismi comportamentali sopra menzionati. In particolare, sono stati individuati, descritti e più o meno ampiamente interpretati: a) un solo tipo di sensilli olfattivi («sickle-shaped sensilla>>), presente in ambo i sessi, ma assai più rappresentato e potente nei maschi (recettori del feromone sessuale?) e più versatile nelle femmine (recettore di kairomone e sinomoni?); b) quattro tipi di sensilli gustativi, due dei quali sono presenti in ambo i sessi (<>, chiaramente implicati nel reciproco riconoscimento tra i sessi; e <>, di difficile interpretazione), mentre un terzo tipo, del tutto particolare, è presente solo nelle femmine, (<> della femmina e dunque strettamente legato al funzionamento dei medesimi e l'altro, tipico del maschio, era già noto e qui se ne conferma la funzione di ghiandola a feromone sessuale maschile., Entomologica, Vol 24 (1989)

A distanza ormai di più di dieci anni dall’arrivo del Punteruolo rosso delle palme Rhynchophorus ferrugineus sul territorio nazionale, molteplici sono stati gli approcci tecnico-scientifici messi in atto per arginare il dilagare delle cruente infestazioni. Ad oggi, tuttavia, nessuna delle strategie di contenimento adottate è risultata funzionale e realmente efficace a contrastare l’azione distruttiva del coleottero nei confronti del patrimonio palmicolo che caratterizza l’arredo urbano e monumentale di molte città italiane. Infatti, la natura criptica del Punteruolo rosso delle palme, da un lato ha reso difficile eseguire una diagnosi precoce poiché nei primi stadi di infestazione la sintomatologia del danno è poco evidente, dall’altro ha spesso ritardato e compromesso lo sviluppo di strategie di controllo efficaci e sostenibili. Di conseguenza, in tale contesto, diventa cruciale una corretta e tempestiva diagnosi delle infestazioni dell’insetto, che attualmente rappresenta l’unica strategia in grado di massimizzare gli interventi di recupero e salvaguardia delle palme infestate. Analogamente, è necessario vagliare nuove e sostenibili strategie di intervento, in quanto in ambiente urbano risulta poco sostenibile l’uso dei trattamenti chimici, a causa delle gravi conseguenze che ne derivano in termini di impatto sull’ambiente e sulla salute e in considerazione delle drastiche restrizioni nell’applicazione di mezzi chimici in aree urbane a seguito delle recenti direttive comunitarie. In questa presentazione si vuole fare il punto delle ricerche sviluppate negli anni mirate a sfruttare le “scie chimiche” che entrano in gioco nelle relazioni trofiche tra insetto fitofago e pianta ospite, in termini di messa a punto di protocolli per la diagnosi precoce e di strategie di controllo basate sulla manipolazione del comportamento del fitofago. Nel primo caso, sono stati interessanti gli sviluppi ottenuti impiegando l’olfatto di cani appositamente addestrati al riconoscimento delle “tracce odorose” provenienti dalle palme colonizzate dall’insetto; nel secondo appaiono promettenti i risultati ottenuti con una combinazione di composti chimici attrattivi e repellenti ottimizzati per la definizione della tecnica del “push and pull”. Il presente contributo mira a tracciare una panoramica sulle suddette attività, riportandone i punti di maggior pregio e i principali aspetti limitativi.

Populations of herbivorous insects are naturally consumed by other predacious or predatory insect species. These entomophagous insects are thus plant-dwelling organisms that use the plant for several vital functions and are affected by plant traits at the evolutionary, organism and population levels. Many entomophagous species are used for the biological control of insect pests worldwide. The aim of this chapter is to provide an exhaustive review of mechanisms underlying the interactions between plants and entomophagous insects, including those governing life history traits at the individual level, as well as those acting on population and community structure and dynamics. We detail how properties of host-infested plants determine parasitism behaviour, development (in the case of parasitoids) and nectar consumption by adult entomophagous insects. We detail how plants respond to and benefit from natural enemies attacking insect herbivores. We also illustrate how plant architecture, the vegetation communities and their climatic correlates can influence predator and parasitoid behaviour and populations. This chapter considers the biology and ecology of the interactions and mentions some implications for the biological control of plant pests.

Le diverse fasi che caratterizzano l’attacco della pianta da parte del fitofago (contatto, alimentazione ed ovideposizione) inducono l’attivazione di meccanismi di difesa nell’ospite. E’ noto che le piante emettono composti volatili indotti in seguito all’attacco del fitofago e che questi volatili sono in grado di richiamare i parassitoidi. Nel caso specifico degli ooparassitoidi, tali difese indirette si esplicitano mediante rilascio di HIPV (herbivore-induced plant volatiles) ed in particolare di OIPV (oviposition-induced plant volatiles). Ad oggi non ci sono studi inerenti il ruolo giocato dalle tracce rilasciate dal fitofago sulla superficie vegetale nell’induzione di volatili utilizzati dagli ooparassitoidi. In questo lavoro è stata valutata la risposta dell’ooparassitoide Trissolcus basalis ai volatili indotti in Vicia faba dalle tracce lasciate sulla superficie fogliare dall’ospite Nezara viridula. Sono stati condotti biosaggi in olfattometro chiuso ad Y per valutare la risposta di T. basalis a piante contaminate con le tracce lasciate da N. viridula sulla pagina inferiore o superiore della foglia di fava. I risultati hanno evidenziato che le tracce lasciate dalla cimice verde sulla pagina inferiore delle foglie determinano l’induzione di FIPV (footprint-induced plant volatiles) che alterano il comportamento di foraggiamento del parassitoide. L’emissione di FIPV è stata evidenziata anche nel caso di foglie rovesciate indicando un marcato ruolo della localizzazione dello stress. Tale ruolo è stato ulteriormente confermato da altri biosaggi in cui l’ovideposizione, combinata con l’alimentazione e le tracce delle femmine della cimice verde, induce l’emissione di volatili attivi sul parassitoide solo quando è localizzata a livello della superficie inferiore delle foglie. I risultati ottenuti in questo lavoro hanno contribuito a chiarire il ruolo delle tracce nell’emissione volatile da parte della pianta ed hanno evidenziato il ruolo della pagina inferiore delle foglie nel mediare la comunicazione chimica tra T. basalis ed il suo ospite.

BACKGROUND: Populations of red palm weevil (RPW), a severe pest of palms in Mediterranean countries, might be limited by semiochemical-based behaviour-disrupting methods. We evaluated the effects of electroantennogram (EAG)-active plant volatiles on the behaviour of RPWs from Italy and Israel. In field experiments, α-pinene, citronellol, geraniol, citral and 1-octen-3-ol were tested for their ability to disrupt attraction to pheromone-kairomone and molasses baited traps. Those that were found to be disruptive in the field were evaluated in a laboratory choice bioassay in individual cages for their effect on RPW female feeding and oviposition. RESULTS: Field experiments showed reduced captures in traps loaded with geraniol (-57%), 1-octen-3-ol (-50%) or α-pinene (-45% to -60%); captures in citronellol- or citral-loaded traps did not differ from control. In laboratory experiments, 1-octen-3-ol was the most potent behaviour-modifying compound, eliciting a significant/marginally significant reduction in both feeding and oviposition at the lowest dose tested in both populations. Geraniol generally caused a strong reduction in feeding and oviposition at each dose tested (Israel), or at the highest dose (Italy). α-Pinene caused some reduction in feeding activity at the highest dose tested (Italy), but no consistent repellency (Israel). CONCLUSION: Field and laboratory data suggest the potential for the use of 1-octen-3-ol, geraniol and α-pinene for RPW population management.

During the host location process, parasitoids encounter and explore a great variety of volatile and contact semiochemicals from the host-plant complex. In the system Nezara viridula and its egg parasitoid Trissolcus basalis, when wasps land on a plant, they can taste chemical footprints left by walking adult hosts. These cues represent a set of indirect host-related contact kairomones that induce arrestment and motivated searching behavior, as they drive wasps in an area where there is a high probability of finding hosts but are not able to “promise” the presence of the suitable host stage. Patch time allocation is strongly modified by experience gained during foraging on host traces. In fact, when footprint exploitation is not followed by successful oviposition, wasps gradually lose their motivated searching and move back to a more general host searching behaviour. In this work we investigated the effects of exogenous and exogenous factors that can affect the host location behaviour of T. basalis. Trials were recorded and analyzed with the aid of a video tracking and motion analysis system. The potential significance of these results in the host location behavior of T. basalis is discussed.

The red palm weevil (RPW), Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Olivier (Coleoptera, Curculionidae), is one of the most severe pests of ornamental palm species in urban areas of Mediterranean countries. The cryptic nature of the weevil, and the gaps in our knowledge of its biology and ecology, hamper the development of efficient and sustainable strategies to limit its diffusion. Control strategies based on semiochemicals can be considered a suitable alternative for RPW population management, particularly in urban areas. Nevertheless these strategies might be improved by broadening our knowledge of behavior modifying stimuli suitable for adult manipulation, such as repellent chemical compounds. A first study about the possibility to use repellent compounds for the control of Rhynchophorus species was carried out in Central America using -pinene and other undisclosed compounds. More recently, in Italy, in laboratory and field experiments were tested seventeen non-host volatiles as possible repellents against the RPW, selected for their repellent skills towards other arthropods. These studies showed promising results in term of repellency elicited from a-pinene, methyl salycilate, 1-octen-3-ol and geraniol that elicited: 1) Significant disruption of pheromone trap attraction; 2) reduction of female’s egg deposition activity; 3) antifeedant properties. The possibilities to use candidate repellent compounds in a “Push and Pull” or “stimulo-deterrent diversionary” strategies are discussed.

Studies on semiochemical communication have demonstrated that broad bean plant, Vicia faba, emits volatile synomones induced by feeding and oviposition activities of the southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula, which recruit the egg parasitoid Trissolcus basalis. However plants growing in agro-ecosystems can be attacked by several herbivore species that could affect both above and belowground plant tissues with possible consequences for parasitoid recruitment. For example, broad bean plants can also be attacked by the leaf weevil, Sitona lineatus, and simultaneous attacks by the southern green stink bug and the leaf weevil can occur in agro- ecosystems. The purpose of this work was to investigate the effects of dual biotic stresses, the host N. viridula and the non-host S. lineatus, on V. faba volatile synomones that recruit T. basalis. The response of wasp females to V. faba volatiles was investigated in a Y-tube olfactometer testing the following treatments: (1) plant damaged by N. viridula feeding and oviposition; (2) plant damaged by S. lineatus feeding; (3) plant mechanically damaged to resemble S. lineatus feeding; (4) plants damaged by N. viridula feeding and oviposition and by mechanical damages; (5) plants damaged by N. viridula feeding and oviposition and by S. lineatus feeding; (6); healthy plants. Volatile organic compounds emitted from tested plants were also chemically analyzed by Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). The results showed that dual biotic stresses affect V. faba volatile synomones decreasing their attractiveness towards T. basalis. Chemical analysis indicated qualitative differences between volatiles emitted by V. faba plants in response to N. viridula feeding and oviposition and volatile emitted as consequence of dual insect infestation. The ecological consequences of these results in terms of multi-trophic interactions are discussed.

Tra le specie di afidi che attaccano gli agrumi in Sicilia, Aphis spiraecola Patch, Toxoptera aurantii (B.d.F) e Aphis gossypii Glover rivestono importanza economica, essendo presenti dalla primavera all’autunno con livelli di infestazione molto alti. Oltre ai danni legati all’attività trofica, tutte e tre le specie primarie, sono in grado di trasmettere il virus della Tristeza (CTV); in bibliografia l’efficienza è considerata alta nel caso di A. gossypii e poco rilevante nel caso delle altre due specie. La trasmissibilità del CTV, oltre che dalla specie vettrice, dipende da diversi fattori quali, le specie di Citrus donatrici o recettrici, la virulenza dell'isolato del virus, il comportamento alimentare, riproduttivo e di diffusione del vettore. Nell’ambito del progetto “Lotta al virus della Tristeza sviluppo e innovazioni” finanziato dalla Regione Siciliana si è voluto monitorare la presenza A. gossypii e valutare i livelli di infestazione in un agrumeto a conduzione biologica sito nel territorio di Castelvetrano (TP) da maggio del 2012 fino a settembre 2013. Su 20 piante di arancio varietà Navel, scelte a caso su un appezzamento di circa un ettaro, per i quattro punti cardinali, è stata rilevata la percentuale di germogli infestati su una superficie di chioma di 0,25 mq. Inoltre, campioni di A. gossypii sono stati prelevati e sottoposti ad analisi per appurare la presenza del virus. Le osservazioni hanno mostrato che, in entrambi gli anni, l’infestazione di A. gossypii è iniziata alla fine di aprile, ha raggiunto i massimi livelli tra metà maggio e inizio giugno, scomparendo verso la metà del mese di giugno. Per riprendere nel periodo autunnale. Nel 2013 l’infestazione è ripresa nella seconda decade di luglio in concomitanza alla emissione di nuovi getti vegetativi conseguenti ad una irrigazione, con valori paragonabili a quelli primaverili. Le differenze delle percentuali di infestazione rilevate ai quattro punti cardinali non sono statisticamente significative. I campioni sottoposti ad analisi sono tutti risultati esenti da virus.
