In this two-part article, the authors take a look at the major factors affecting background contamination in inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), particularly when measuring ultratrace elements in specialty applications such as aerosol matrices from electronic cigarettes and electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). In order to obtain meaningful data, the analyst must understand and address the magnitude and variability of environmental contamination by ubiquitous trace metals during the sample preparation procedure. Abstract

The 2021 particle physics community study, known as "Snowmass 2021", has brought together particle physicists around the world to create a unified vision for the field over the next decade. One of the areas of focus is the Underground Facilities (UF) frontier, which addresses underground infrastructure and the scientific programs and goals of underground-based experiments. To this effect, the UF Supporting Capabilities topical group created two surveys for the community to identify poten-tial gaps between the supporting capabilities of facilities and those needed by current and future experiments. Capabilities surveyed are discussed in this report and include underground cleanroom space size and specifications, radon-reduced space needs and avail-ability, the assay need and other underground space needs as well timeline for future experiments. Results indicate that future, larger experiments will increasingly require underground assembly in larger, cleaner cleanrooms, often with better radon-reduction systems and increased monitoring capability for ambient contaminants. Most assay needs may be met by existing worldwide ca-pabilities with organized cooperation between facilities and experiments. Improved assay sensitivity is needed for assays of bulk and surface radioactivity for some materials for some experiments, and would be highly beneficial for radon emanation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes new combination of material and take on model evaluation in development of membrane anemometric gas flow sensor. We propose study of flow rate dependence for membrane-based thermal flow sensor composed with TaN/FeNi/TaN thermistors based on SiO2/Si3N4/SiO2 membrane. The purpose of this research is to develop a thermal flow rate sensor with advanced range of gas flow velocity measurement with increased accuracy and sensitivity. Currently presented as-is sensor is capable of measuring gas flow in the range from 150 to 300 L/min for low humidity preferably clean not reactive gases such as noble gases or air, supplied for clean room. In calculation the significant influence on the shape of the dependence of resistance on temperature was discovered from the heat capacity of the Si3N4 film on which the sensor is located. Observed dependence can serve as a justification for selecting film materials with lower thermal conductivity to increase the difference in resistance depending on the increase in gas flow, which will lead to a decrease in error and simplify signal detection. The concept of green development has become a consensus throughout society. With the proposal of the "dual-carbon" target, it is urgent to develop renewable, chean energy sources. As the representative of the third-generation solar cells, perovskite solar cells require a ventilated environment for the preparation of their precursor materials, a constant temperature and humidity environment for the preparation of the battery devices, and a vacuum environment for their anhydrous and anaerobic deposition. Within a relatively fixed laboratory space, the design and construction of enclosure structures, air exhaust systems, air supply systems, clean systems, and air conditioning systems have been used to achieve the above functions, effectively solving the problem of high air volume and clean room coexistence. Abstract

Quantum-tunneling metal–insulator-metal (MIM) diodes have emerged as a significant area of study in the field of materials science and electronics. Our previous work demonstrated the successful fabrication of these diodes using atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (AP-CVD), a scalable method that surpasses traditional vacuum-based methods and allows for the fabrication of high-quality Al2O3 films with few pinholes. Here, we show that despite their extremely small size 0.002 µm2, the MIM nanodiodes demonstrate low resistance at zero bias. Moreover, we have observed a significant enhancement in resistance by six orders of magnitude compared to our prior work, Additionally, we have achieved a high responsivity of 9 AW−1, along with a theoretical terahertz cut-off frequency of 0.36 THz. Our approach provides an efficient alternative to cleanroom fabrication, opening up new opportunities for manufacturing terahertz-Band devices. The results of our study highlight the practicality and potential of our method in advancing nanoelectronics. This lays the foundation for the development of advanced quantum devices that operate at terahertz frequencies, with potential applications in telecommunications, medical imaging, and security systems. Abstract

DNA is an incontrovertible biosignature whose sequencing aids in species identification, genome functionality, and evolutionary relationships. To study life within the rocks of Earth and Mars, we demonstrate, in an ISO5 clean room, a procedure based on nanopore technology that correctly identifies organisms at picogram levels of DNA without amplification. Our study with E. coli and S. cerevisiae DNA samples showed that MinION sequencer (Oxford Nanopore Technologies) can unequivocally detect and characterise microbes with as little as 2 pg of input with just 50 active nanopores. This result is an excellent advancement in sensitivity, immediately applicable to investigating low biomass samples. This value is also at the level of possible background contamination associated with the reagents and the environment. Cultivation of natural and heat-treated Martian analogue (MMS-2) regolith samples, exposed to atmospheric water vapour or in increasing water concentrations, led to the extraction of 600–1000 pg of DNA from 500 mg of soil. Applying the low detectability technology enabled through MinION sequencer for a natural low biomass setting, we characterised the dry MMS-2 and found few soil-related organisms and airborne contaminants. The picogram detection level and the procedure presented here, may be of interest for the future Mars sample Return program, and the life research and planetary protection studies that will be implemented through the sample safety assessment.
