Abstract

This work is based on microstructural characteristics of Ti-B4C-C laser alloying composite coatings on Ti-6Al-4V alloy in nitrogen protective atmosphere. Test results indicated that laser alloying of Ti-B4C-C pre-placed powders on titanium alloys substrate can form ceramics reinforced hard alloying coatings, which increased the micro-hardness of the substrate. Test results also indicated that the Ti(CN) phase that was formed in situ in the upper coating was undeveloped dendritic, and thus reduced the possibility of crack formation in alloying coating. Moreover, the TiB and TiC phases were produced in alloying coating, which corresponded to its (210) and (220) crystal planes, respectively.

Abstract

Titanium and its alloys are widely used in high-end manufacturing fields. However, their low high-temperature oxidation resistance has limited their further application. Recently, laser alloying processing has attracted researchers to improve the surface properties of Ti, for which Ni coated graphite system is an excellent prospect due to its outstanding properties and metallurgical bonding between coating and substrate. In this paper, nanoscaled rare earth oxide Nd2O3 addition was added to Ni coated graphite laser alloying materials to research its influence on the microstructure and high-temperature oxidation resistance of the coating. The results proved that nano-Nd2O3 has an outstanding effect on refining coating microstructures, thus the high-temperature oxidation resistance was improved. Furthermore, with the addition of 1. 5 wt.% nano-Nd2O3, more NiO formed in the oxide film, which effectively strengthened the protective effect of the film. After 100 h of 800 °C oxidation, the oxidation weight gain per unit area of the normal coating was 14.571 mg/cm2, while that of the coating with nano-Nd2O3 addition was 6.244 mg/cm2, further proving that the addition of nano-Nd2O3 substantially improved the high-temperature oxidation properties of the coating. Abstract

MAO/CS composite coatings were generated on Mg-1.75Zn-0.56Ca alloy surface for protection and improving biocompatibility of Mg-Zn-Ca alloy in the physiological environment. The microstructure, surface analysis and corrosion resistance of samples were evaluated by scanning electronic microcopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in SBF solution. In addition, in vitro cell cytotoxicity test was performed by MTT tests. The findings of this work indicated that MAO/CS composite coatings were smooth and defect-free. The MAO/CS coatings retained a low degradation rate and the solution pH value at a moderate level (≤7.5) during immersion test. The corrosion resistance and cell proliferation were greatly enhanced by the composite coating. Furthermore, the different cell cytotoxicity on Mg alloy, MAO and MAO/CS coating was discussed.
