Passively collected behavioral health data from ubiquitous sensors holds significant promise to provide mental health professionals insights from patient's daily lives; however, developing analysis tools to use this data in clinical practice requires addressing challenges of generalization across devices and weak or ambiguous correlations between the measured signals and an individual's mental health. To address these challenges, we take a novel approach that leverages large language models (LLMs) to synthesize clinically useful insights from multi-sensor data. We develop chain of thought prompting methods that use LLMs to generate reasoning about how trends in data such as step count and sleep relate to conditions like depression and anxiety. We first demonstrate binary depression classification with LLMs achieving accuracies of 61.1% which exceed the state of the art. While it is not robust for clinical use, this leads us to our key finding: even more impactful and valued than classification is a new human-AI collaboration approach in which clinician experts interactively query these tools and combine their domain expertise and context about the patient with AI generated reasoning to support clinical decision-making. We find models like GPT-4 correctly reference numerical data 75% of the time, and clinician participants express strong interest in using this approach to interpret self-tracking data.

Device-independent quantum key distribution (DIQKD) is a key distribution scheme whose security is based on the laws of quantum physics but does not require any assumptions about the devices used in the protocol. The security of the existing entanglement-based DIQKD protocol relies on the Bell test. Here, we propose an efficient device-independent quantum key distribution (EDIQKD) protocol in which one participant prepares states and transmits them to another participant through a quantum channel to measure. In this prepare-and-measure protocol, the transmission process between participants is characterized according to the process tomography for security, ruling out any mimicry using the classical initial, transmission, and final state. Comparing the minimal number of bits of the raw key to guarantee security against collective attacks, the efficiency of the EDIQKD protocol is two orders of magnitude more than that of the DIQKD protocol for the reliable key of which quantum bit error rate is allowed up to 6.5\%. This advantage will enable participants to substantially conserve the entangled pair's demanded resources and the measurement. According to the highest detection efficiency in the recent most advanced photonic experiment, our protocol can be realized with a non-zero key rate and remains more efficient than usual DIQKD. Our protocol and its security analysis may offer helpful insight into identifying the typical prepare-and-measure quantum information tasks with the device-independent scenario.

The application of pressure as well as the successive substitution of Ru with Fe in the hidden order (HO) compound URu$_2$Si$_2$ leads to the formation of the large moment antiferromagnetic phase (LMAFM). Here we have investigated the substitution series URu$_{2-x}$Fe$_x$Si$_2$ from $x$\,=\,0.0 to 2.0 by U\,4$f$ core-level photoelectron spectroscopy and have observed non-monotonic changes in the spectra. The initial increase and subsequent decrease of the spectral weight of the 4$f$ core level satellite with increasing $x$ stands for a non-monotonic 5$f$ filling across the substitution series. The competition of chemical pressure and increase of the density of states at the Fermi energy, both due to substitution of Ru with Fe, can explain such a behavior. An extended Doniach phase diagram including the $x$ dependence of the density of states is proposed. Also in URu$_{2-x}$Fe$_x$Si$_2$ the ground state is a singlet or quasi-doublet state consisting of two singlets. Hence, the formation of magnetic order in the URu$_{2-x}$Fe$_x$Si$_2$ substitution series must be explained within a singlet magnetism model., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

Using high resolution tender-x-ray resonant inelastic scattering and hard-x-ray non-resonant inelastic scattering beyond the dipole limit we were able to detect electronic excitations in intermetallic UGa$_2$ that are highly atomic in nature. Analysis of the spectral lineshape reveals that the local $5f^2$ configuration characterizes the correlated nature of this ferromagnet. The orientation and directional dependence of the spectra indicate that the ground state is made of the $\Gamma_1$ singlet and/or $\Gamma_6$ doublet symmetry. With the ordered moment in the $ab$ plane, we infer that the magnetism originates from the higher lying $\Gamma_6$ doublet being mixed with the $\Gamma_1$ singlet due to inter-site exchange, qualifying UGa$_2$ to be a true quantum magnet. The ability to observe atomic excitations is crucial to resolve the on-going debate about the degree of localization versus itineracy in U intermetallics., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

Controlled charge flows are fundamental to many areas of science and technology, serving as carriers of energy and information, as probes of material properties and dynamics, and as a means of revealing or even inducing broken symmetries. Emerging methods for light-based current control offer promising routes beyond the speed and adaptability limitations of conventional voltage-driven systems. However, optical generation and manipulation of currents at nanometer spatial scales remains a basic challenge and a crucial step towards scalable optoelectronic systems for microelectronics and information science. Here, we introduce vectorial optoelectronic metasurfaces in which ultrafast light pulses induce local directional charge flows around symmetry-broken plasmonic nanostructures, with tunable responses and arbitrary patterning down to sub-diffractive nanometer scales. Local symmetries and vectorial current distributions are revealed by polarization- and wavelength-sensitive electrical readout and terahertz (THz) emission, while spatially-tailored global currents are demonstrated in the direct generation of elusive broadband THz vector beams. We show that in graphene, a detailed interplay between electrodynamic, thermodynamic, and hydrodynamic degrees of freedom gives rise to rapidly-evolving nanoscale driving forces and charge flows under extreme temporal and spatial confinement. These results set the stage for versatile patterning and optical control over nanoscale currents in materials diagnostics, THz spectroscopies, nano-magnetism, and ultrafast information processing.

The hexagonal perovskite BaNiO3, prepared via non-ceramic approaches, is known to act as a good catalyst for the oxygen-evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media. Here we report our observation that BaNiO3 synthesized via KOH flux growth and high O2 pressure ceramic synthesis have different magnetic properties. We show that this is because the KOH flux-grown crystals made in open-air are actually a hydroxide-containing form of BaNiO3 that can be dried upon annealing in O2 flow. This work not only unveils a previously unknown aspect of the BaNiO3 OER catalyst and offers some insights into the underlying mechanism, but also suggests that hydroxide ions may be present in other hexagonal perovskite oxides prepared in wet conditions., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

This study examined the effects of a technology-enhanced intervention on the self-regulation of 262 eighth-grade students, employing information and communication technology (ICT) and web-based self-assessment tools set against science learning. The data were analyzed using both maximum likelihood and Bayesian structural equation modeling to unravel the intricate relationships between self-regulation, self-efficacy, perceptions of ICT, and self-assessment tools. Our research findings underscored the direct and indirect impacts of self-efficacy, perceived ease of use, and perceived use of technology on self-regulation. The results revealed the predictive power of self-assessment tools in determining self-regulation outcomes, underlining the potential of technology-enhanced self-regulated learning environments. The study posited the necessity to transcend mere technology incorporation and to emphasize the inclusion of monitoring strategies explicitly designed to augment self-regulation. Interestingly, self-efficacy appeared to indirectly influence self-regulation outcomes through perceived the use of technology rather than direct influence. Analytically, this research indicated that Bayesian estimation could offer a more comprehensive insight into structural equation modeling by more accurately assessing our estimates' uncertainty. This research substantially contributes to comprehending the influence of technology-enhanced environments on students' self-regulated learning, stressing the importance of constructing practical tools explicitly designed to cultivate self-regulation.

Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering and Bell nonlocality illustrate two different kinds of correlations predicted by quantum mechanics. They not only motivate the exploration of the foundation of quantum mechanics, but also serve as important resources for quantum-information processing in the presence of untrusted measurement apparatuses. Herein, we introduce a method for characterizing the creation of EPR steering and Bell nonlocality for dynamical processes in experiments. We show that the capability of an experimental process to create quantum correlations can be quantified and identified simply by preparing separable states as test inputs of the process and then performing local measurements on single qubits of the corresponding outputs. This finding enables the construction of objective benchmarks for the two-qubit controlled operations used to perform universal quantum computation. We demonstrate this utility by examining the experimental capability of creating quantum correlations with the controlled-phase operations on the IBM Quantum Experience and Amazon Braket Rigetti superconducting quantum computers. The results show that our method provides a useful diagnostic tool for evaluating the primitive operations of nonclassical correlation creation in noisy intermediate scale quantum devices., Comment: 5 figures, 3 appendices
