The epoxy foam material filled with an absorbing agent effectively absorbs electromagnetic waves. In this study, epoxy resin was used as the matrix, and acetylene carbon black was used as the magnetic absorbing agent to prepare an absorbing foam material (epoxy/CB). The microstructure of acetylene carbon black (CB) and its distribution in epoxy resin, as well as the effects of pre-polymerization time and CB content on the foam structure, were systematically characterized. Additionally, two dispersion methods, the hot-melt in situ stirring dispersion method and the three-roll milling dispersion method, were studied for their effects on the foaming process and absorbing properties of epoxy/CB. The results showed that with the prolongation of pre-polymerization time, the pore size decreased from 1.02 mm to 0.4 mm, leading to a more uniform pore distribution. Compared to the hot-melt in situ stirring dispersion method, the three-roll milling dispersion method effectively improved the dispersion of CB in epoxy resin, reducing the aggregate size from 300–400 nm to 70–80 nm. The pore diameter also decreased from 0.453 mm to 0.311 mm, improving the uniformity of particle size distribution. However, the absorbing material prepared with the three-roll milling dispersion method exhibited unsatisfactory absorption performance, with values close to 0 dB at mid-low frequencies and around −1 dB at high frequencies. In contrast, the absorbing material prepared with the hot-melt in situ stirring dispersion method showed better absorption performance at high frequencies, reaching around −9 dB. This study investigated the synergistic effect of carbon black/multi-wall carbon nanotube (CB/MWCNT) hybrid fillers on the physical and mechanical properties of Ethylene propylene diene rubber (EPDM) composites after exposure to high-pressure hydrogen gas. The EPDM/CB/CNT hybrid composites were prepared by using the EPDM/MWCNT master batch (MB) with 10 phr CNTs to enhance the dispersion of CNTs in hybrid composites. The investigation included a detailed analysis of cure characteristics, crosslink density, Payne effect, mechanical properties, and hydrogen permeation properties. After exposure to 96.3 MPa hydrogen gas, the hydrogen uptake and the change in volume and mechanical properties of the composites were assessed. We found that as the MWCNT volume fraction in fillers increased, the crosslink density, filler–filler interaction, and modulus of hybrid composites increased. The hydrogen uptake and the solubility of the composites decreased with an increasing MWCNT volume fraction in fillers. Moreover, after exposure to hydrogen gas, the change in volume and mechanical properties exhibited a diminishing trend with a higher MWCNT volume fraction. We conclude that the hybridization of CB and CNTs formed strong filler–filler networks in hybrid composites, consequently reinforcing the EPDM composites and enhancing the barrier properties of hydrogen gas. In this study, Ba-CuO (barium-doped copper oxide) were synthesized by a hydrothermal method, then incorporated with CB (carbon black), and utilized as a superior composite Ba-CuO@CB to modify a GCE (glassy carbon electrode) for the detection of Metol (MTL). The prolonged consumption of Metol in industry and its discharge into river water and environmental water causes high impact, and it is very harmful for human health and biosphere. Therefore, it is crucial to determine Metol and methods to do so are in great demand. The constructed composite was further examined by physical characterization methods, including X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photon spectroscopy (XPS), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDS). Moreover, the electrochemical detection process for MTL was scrutinized by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Due to the outstanding electrocatalytic activity and extraordinary conductivity of Ba-CuO, the large surface area of CB, and the synergistic effect between Ba-CuO and CB, absorption- and diffusion-controlled layers play very important roles in the determination of MTL. The electrocatalytic activity of Ba-CuO@CB/GCE exhibits a remarkably low detection limit (0.3 μM), with a broad linear range of 0.01 to 1000 μM and good sensitivity (0.281 μA μM-1 cm-2) towards the detection of MTL. Moreover, the outstanding recovery range of environmental samples further confirms the reliability and feasibility of Ba-CuO@CB/GCE for detecting the non-biodegradable organic pollutant Metol. The detection of ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA), and uric acid (UA) is not only of great significance in the areas of biomedicine and neurochemistry but also helpful in disease diagnosis and pathology research. Due to their diverse structures, designability, and large specific surface areas, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently caught considerable attention in the electrochemical field. Herein, a family of heterometallic MOFs with amino modification, MIL-125(Ti-Al)-xNH2 (x = 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%), were synthesized and employed as electrochemical sensors for the detection of AA, DA, and UA. Among them, MIL-125(Ti-Al)-75%NH2 exhibited the most promising electrochemical behavior with 40% doping of carbon black in 0.1 M PBS (pH = 7.10), which displayed individual detection performance with wide linear detection ranges (1.0-6.5 mM for AA, 5-100 μM for DA and 5-120 μM for UA) and low limits of detection (0.215 mM for AA, 0.086 μM for DA, and 0.876 μM for UA, S/N = 3). Furthermore, the as-prepared MIL-125(Ti-Al)-75%NH2/GCE provided a promising platform for future application in real sample analysis, owing to its excellent anti-interference performance and good stability. Currently, emissions from internal combustion vehicles are not properly monitored throughout their life cycle. In particular, a small share of vehicles (< 20 %) with malfunctioning after-treatment systems and old vehicles with outdated engine technology are responsible for the majority (60 %–90 %) of traffic-related emissions. Remote emission sensing (RES) is a method used for screening emissions from a large number of in-use vehicles. Commercial open-path RES systems are capable of providing emission factors for many gaseous compounds, but they are less accurate and reliable for particulate matter (PM). Point sampling (PS) is an extractive RES method where a portion of the exhaust is sampled and then analyzed. So far, PS studies have been predominantly conducted on a rather small scale and have mainly analyzed heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs), which have high exhaust flow rates. In this work, we present a comprehensive PS system that can be used for large-scale screening of PM and gas emissions, largely independent of the vehicle type. The data analysis framework developed here is capable of processing data from thousands of vehicles. The core of the data analysis is our peak detection algorithm (TUG-PDA), which determines and separates emissions down to a spacing of just a few seconds between vehicles. We present a detailed evaluation of the main influencing factors on PS measurements by using about 100 000 vehicle records collected from several measurement locations, mainly in urban areas. We show the capability of the emission screening by providing real-world black carbon (BC), particle number (PN) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission trends for various vehicle categories such as diesel and petrol passenger cars or HDVs. Comparisons with open-path RES and PS studies show overall good agreement and demonstrate the applicability even for the latest Euro emission standards, where current open-path RES systems reach their limits. It has attracted tremendous attention for replacing petroleum‐based carbon black or mineral fillers with renewable, biology‐based and low‐cost cellulose. However, the reinforcing effect of cellulose, especially at the microscale, is still a great challenge in the polymer industry. In this work, a feasible surface modification method for microcrystalline cellulose powder (MCC) in all solid states is proposed by using rubber accelerators N‐cyclohexyl benzothiazole‐2‐sulphenamidee (CBS) and 2,2′‐dibenzothiazoledisulfide (DM). These accelerators not only accelerate the sulfur crosslink of nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR), but also graft to rubber molecular chains and form hydrogen bonds with MCC, resulting in good interfacial interaction and good dispersion of MCC in the NBR matrix. As a consequence, the tensile strength and elongation at break of NBR/10MCC reach up to 20.12 MPa and 511%, respectively, which are the highest values of NBR/MCC or cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) composites we can find in the world and are comparable to those of carbon black or mineral fillers. This provides a more effective and environmentally friendly way of using MCC or CNCs in the polymer industry. The present research outlines the novel finite element analysis of green tire tread compounds based on solution styrene‐butadiene rubber/butadiene rubber (SSBR/BR) reinforced with a hybrid silica/carbon black filler system. For this purpose, a series of micromodels using representative volume elements (RVEs) were developed. The silica/carbon black ratio with a constant value of the reinforcement and considering periodic boundary conditions (PBCs) were established. The distribution of the reinforcing fillers in the matrix was inspired by transmission electron microscope (TEM) micrographs. A nonlinear hyperviscoelastic model was considered for the matrix and interphase zones and a linear elastic model for the reinforcement phase to predict the dissipation behavior at a moderate to high strain regime. To confirm the accuracy of the proposed model, the RVEs of hybrid systems were simulated and then compared with experimental data. The results showed that the proposed model is capable to predict the mechanical properties of rubber compounds. The presence of agglomerated fillers resulted in an increase in the dissipation behavior. This was confirmed by rubber process analyzer (RPA) and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) results. The partial or total replacement of carbon black by silica fillers is initiated through various techniques for environment-friendly, smart, and fuel-efficient NR composites for high-end dynamic applications like tyre tread. The smart properties such as low rolling resistance, better wet skid resistance, and abrasion resistance as well as noise reduction, create tyre tread compounds with superior performance. The endeavour to maximise the incorporation of eco-friendly ingredients like silica filler in rubber compound associates to produce a green tyre product indeed. The present review encompasses those approaches with a substantial contribution in the area along with critical insights in the respective efforts. Initially, the various types of commercially available silica fillers are discussed in brief, followed by the various approaches for surface modification in detail. Finally, the miscellaneous initiatives along with their achievements and drawbacks are included under five strategic verticals for better understanding along with vital remarks. Herein, a novel electrochemical sensor was designed for the sensitive determination of methyl parathion (MP) using the Super P Li carbon black@β-cyclodextrin (SPLCB@β-CD) decorated glassy carbon electrode (GCE). SPLCB with high electroactive area exhibited exceptional conductivity and good dispersive property, which is beneficial for forming the interlinked conductive network structure. β-CD could not only promote the uniform dispersion of SPLCB but also effectively realise the enrichment of MP molecules. Moreover, the existence of SPLCB could make up for the defect of poor conductivity of β-CD. Under the optimal experimental condition (pH = 7.0, enrichment time: 60 s). The collaborative cooperation of SPLCB and β-CD achieved the excellent MP detection property (LOD: 8.6 nM; concentration range: 0.01–10 μM). The SPLCB@β-CD/GCE sensor exhibited acceptable repeatability and reproducibility. A set of (Ti 0.2 Zr 0.2 Hf 0.2 Ta 0.2 Nb 0.2)C high-entropy carbide (HEC) ceramic samples were produced via spark plasma sintering (SPS) at a temperature of 1900 °C utilizing synthesized carbide powders. The carbide powders were synthesized via carbothermal reduction and derived from various carbon sources including carbon black, carbon microspheres, flake graphite, and graphitic carbon spheres. The impact of the different carbon sources was evaluated, for the first time, on the HEC's phase composition, microstructure, mechanical properties, and oxidation behavior. Results show that the HEC prepared using graphitic carbon spheres had a single-phase rock salt structure, with an average grain size of approximately 770 nm, which was smaller than that of HEC samples derived from the other carbon sources, due to its lower oxygen content, better dispersion, and higher chemical reactivity. Additionally, these HEC samples manufactured using graphitic carbon spheres exhibited 98.9% relative density, 20.39 GPa hardness, 4.5 ± 0.6 MPa·m1/2 fracture toughness, and excellent oxidation resistance. Liquid silicone rubber (LSR) garners attention across a diverse range of industries owing to its commendable fluidity and heat resistance. Nonetheless, its mechanical strength and oil resistance fall short compared to other rubbers, necessitating enhancement through the incorporation of a suitable filler. This research focuses on reinforcing LSR using carbon black (CB) particles as a filler, evaluating the mechanical properties and oil resistance of neat LSR, and LSR containing up to 3 wt% of CB filler. CB was added in powder form to investigate its effect on LSR. When LSR was impregnated with oil, the deterioration of rubber was noticeably observed under high-temperature conditions compared to room-temperature conditions. Consequently, the mechanical properties and oil resistance, excluding the permanent compression reduction rate, tended to increase as the filling content of CB increased compared to the unfilled state. Notably, in the specimen with 2 wt% CB filler, the tensile modulus increased significantly by 48% and the deterioration rate was reduced by about 50% under accelerated deterioration conditions. Additionally, the swelling rate in oil decreased by around 14%. This validates a notable improvement in both mechanical properties and oil resistance. Based on the identified mechanism for properties enhancement in this study, CB/LSR composite is expected to have a wide range of applications in fields such as gaskets, oil seals, and flexible sensors. The 3D photoelectrochemical cell was developed with epoxy resin and a working composite electrode produced with a blend of 3D printer commercial conductive filament of polylactic acid biopolymer and carbon black (PLA/CB) mixed with silica/tungsten (VI) oxide (SiO2/WO3) synthesized was used for the determination of imidacloprid in water samples. Imidacloprid is a neonicotinoid pesticide considered potentially neurotoxic, and investigating its presence in aquatic environments is of great importance. The PLA/CB/SiO2/WO3 sensor was morphologically characterized by scanning electron microscopy. Photoelectrochemical performance of the composite sensor was evaluated by chronoamperometry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. In the presence of light (on) using differential pulse voltammetry in borate buffer solution (0.1 mol L−1, pH 7.0), the modified sensor exhibited a linear range of 0.15–93.70 μmol L−1 and with a limit of detection of 0.04 μmol L−1 to determine imidacloprid. The modified sensor did not present interferences for K+ and Fe3+ ions, carbendazim, glyphosate and thiamethoxam pesticides. Furthermore, the recovery in spiked samples successfully determined the presence of imidacloprid pesticide in tap water and natural river surface water. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The ability to manipulate rheological and electrical properties of colloidal carbon black gels makes them attractive in composites for energy applications such as batteries and fuel cells, where they conduct electricity and prevent sedimentation of 'granular' active components. While it is commonly assumed that granular fillers have a simple additive effect on the composite properties, new phenomena can emerge unexpectedly, with some composites exhibiting a unique rheological bi-stability between high-yield-stress and low-yield-stress states. Here we report such bi-stability in suspensions of non-Brownian graphite and colloidal carbon black in oil, a model system to mimic composite suspensions for energy applications. Steady shear below a critical stress elicits a transition to a persistent mechanically weak and poorly conducting state, which must be 'rejuvenated' using high-stress shear to recover a stronger, high-conductivity state. Our findings highlight the highly tunable nature of binary granular/gel composite suspensions and present new possibilities for optimising mixing and processing conditions for Li-ion battery slurries. Methodologies across the dispersion preparation, characterization, and cellular dosimetry of hydrophilic nanoparticles (NPs) have been developed and used extensively in the field of nanotoxicology. However, hydrophobic NPs pose a challenge for dispersion in aqueous culture media using conventional methods that include sonication followed by mixing in the culture medium of interest and cellular dosimetry. In this study, a robust methodology for the preparation of stable dispersions of hydrophobic NPs for cellular studies is developed by introducing continuous energy over time via stirring in the culture medium followed by dispersion characterization and cellular dosimetry. The stirring energy and the presence of proteins in the culture medium result in the formation of a protein corona around the NPs, stabilizing their dispersion, which can be used for in vitro cellular studies. The identification of the optimal stirring time is crucial for achieving dispersion and stability. This is assessed through a comprehensive stability testing protocol employing dynamic light scattering to evaluate the particle size distribution stability and polydispersity. Additionally, the effective density of the NPs is obtained for the stable NP dispersions using the volumetric centrifugation method, while cellular dosimetry calculations are done using available cellular computational modeling, mirroring approaches used for hydrophilic NPs. The robustness of the proposed dispersion approach is showcased using a highly hydrophobic NP model (black carbon NPs) and two culture media, RPMI medium and SABM, that are widely used in cellular studies. The proposed approach for the dispersion of hydrophobic NPs results in stable dispersions in both culture media used here. The NP effective density of 1.03–1.07 g/cm3 measured here for black carbon NPs is close to the culture media density, resulting in slow deposition on the cells over time. So, the present methodology for dispersion and dosimetry of hydrophobic NPs is essential for the design of dose–response studies and overcoming the challenges imposed by slow particle deposition. Polymer/conductive filler composites have been widely used for the preparation of self-limiting heating cables with the positive temperature coefficient (PTC) effect. The control of conductive filler distribution and network in polymer matrix is the most critical for performance of PTC materials. In order to compensate for the destruction of the filler network structure caused by strong shearing during processing, an excessive conductive filler content is usually added into the polymer matrix, which in turn sacrifices its processability and mechanical properties. In this work, a facile post-treatment of the as-extruded cable, including thermal and electrical treatment to produce high-density polyethylene (HDPE)/carbon black (CB) cable with excellent PTC effect, is developed. It is found for the as-extruded sample, the strong shearing makes the CB particles disperse uniformly in HDPE matrix, and 25 wt% CB is needed for the formation of conductive paths. For the thermal-treated sample, a gradually aggregated CB filler structure is observed, which leads to the improvement of PTC effect and the notable reduction of CB content to 20 wt%. It is very interesting to see that for the sample with combined thermal and electrical treatment, CB particles are agglomerated and oriented along the electric field direction to create substantial conductive paths, which leads to a further decrease of CB content down to 15 wt%. Given the challenges we face of an ageing infrastructure and insufficient maintenance, there is a critical shift towards preventive and predictive maintenance in construction. Self-sensing cement-based materials have drawn interest in this sector due to their high monitoring performance and durability compared to electronic sensors. While bulk applications have been well-discussed within this field, several challenges exist in their implementation for practical applications, such as poor workability and high manufacturing costs at larger volumes. This paper discusses the development of smart carbon-based cementitious coatings for strain monitoring of concrete substrates under flexural loading. This work presents a physical, electrical, and electromechanical investigation of sensing coatings with varying carbon black (CB) concentrations along with the geometric optimisation of the sensor design. The optimal strain-sensing performance, 55.5 ± 2.7, was obtained for coatings with 2 wt% of conductive filler, 3 mm thickness, and a gauge length of 60 mm. The dramatic changes the world and the expectations of potential users have pushed researchers working in flexible foam pressure sensor (FFPS) fabrication to develop more affordable and high-performance materials. Among various materials, polymer foamed-based nanocomposites are a preferred choice due to their excellent mechanical properties, good chemical properties, and easy control. Moreover, the use of nanofillers such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), carbon black (CB), and graphene in the polymer matrix has greatly improved the properties of the sensors. Therefore, this review focuses on the recent advances in FFPS by using different types of nanofillers in shape and structure. Accordingly, developments in the fabrication of FFPS, including dip coating, spray coating, sputtering, and in situ polymerization are also discussed. Special attention has been paid to identifying the underlying mechanism to maximize pressure sensing and improve the performance of FFPS. The emerging field of direct recycling for spent Li-ion batteries offers significant advantages, such as reduced energy expenses and minimized secondary pollution, when compared to traditional pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical methods. This is due to its direct utilization of the spent cathodes as raw materials. However, efficient harvesting of spent cathode particles remains a challenge. To address this issue, this technical brief is the first to incorporate resonant acoustic vibration technology (RAV) as an efficient method for stripping cathode powders from spent Li-ion batteries. Our findings indicate that RAV-based techniques can achieve a stripping efficiency of up to 92%. A comparative analysis with conventional stripping methods, such as magnetic stirring, sonication, and curling-uncurling, reveals that RAV coupled with heat treatment provides unparalleled scalability and efficiency, eliminating the need for post-processing. Furthermore, the resulting cathode powders retain their original polycrystalline particle structures, with no impurities, such as carbon black or small aluminum fragments detected. Lithium‐ion capacitors (LICs) are considered a promising next‐generation energy storage system with high energy density and power capability. The conductive additive is a passive and indispensable material in deciding the electrochemical performance of an energy storage device during high current charging and discharging processes. The incorporation of a suitable conductive additive into the layers of an electrode improves electronic conductivity. It reduces the internal resistance and polarization of the electrode resulting in the enhanced performance of the charge‐storage system. Herein, recovered graphite (RG) is reported from dead Li‐ion batteries as an excellent conductive additive that can improve the electronic conductivity of the electrode material. Compared with commercial conductive additive acetylene black (AB), the TiO2 anode material with 5% RG delivered a high discharge capacity of 163 mAh g−1 at a current rate of 0.15 A g−1 with a coulombic efficiency of ≈99% after 500 cycles in half‐cell assembly. The fabricated AC/TiO2@5%RG LIC displays an excellent electrochemical performance with a maximum energy density of ≈50 Wh kg−1 at a current density of 0.15 A g−1. Purpose: Selective laser sintering (SLS) is an essential technology in the field of additive manufacturing. However, SLS technology is limited by the traditional point-laser sintering method and has reached the bottleneck of efficiency improvement. This study aims to develop an image-shaped laser sintering (ISLS) system based on a digital micromirror device (DMD) to address this problem. The ISLS system uses an image-shaped laser light source with a size of 16 mm × 25.6 mm instead of the traditional SLS point-laser light source. Design/methodology/approach: The ISLS system achieves large-area image-shaped sintering of polymer powder materials by moving the laser light source continuously in the x-direction and updating the sintering pattern synchronously, as well as by overlapping the splicing of adjacent sintering areas in the y-direction. A low-cost composite powder suitable for the ISLS system was prepared using polyether sulfone (PES), pinewood and carbon black (CB) powders as raw materials. Large-sized samples were fabricated using composite powder, and the microstructure, dimensional accuracy, geometric deviation, density, mechanical properties and feasible feature sizes were evaluated. Findings: The experimental results demonstrate that the ISLS system is feasible and can print large-sized parts with good dimensional accuracy, acceptable geometric deviations, specific small-scale features and certain density and mechanical properties. Originality/value: This study has achieved the transition from traditional point sintering mode to image-shaped surface sintering mode. Composite materials based on the Ti-Si-C system were obtained by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis with the use of carbon black and graphene as a source of carbon. The comparative investigations of the phase composition and structure of the materials were performed by X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy. It is shown that in the sample obtained with carbon black, ∼ 94 wt.% of MAX-phase Ti3SiC2 is formed. When graphene is used, the content of the MAX phase is heterogeneous throughout the sample volume and is in the range of ∼ 67 – 90 wt.%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The chemical interactions of two types of graphite and two types of carbon black (CB) with acetone, toluene, and phenol were studied in order to evaluate the influence of chemical treatment on the structure and morphology of the carbon phases. The experimental treatment of carbon phases was carried out at room temperature for 1 hour. The chemical and phase composition were studied by x-ray photoelectron (XP) and Raman spectroscopies, while the morphology and structure were determined by powder x-ray diffraction, as well as transmission electron microscopy techniques. To shed light on the most probable explanation of the observed results, we performed simulations and calculations of the binding energies of acetone, toluene, and phenol with model carbon phases: a perfect graphene sheet and a defective graphene sheet containing various structural defects (vacancies as well as zigzag and armchair edges). Simulations show that all non-covalent and most covalent coupling reactions are exothermic, with acetone coupling having the higher calorimetric effect. Based on the results of the simulations and the XP spectroscopy measurements, the probable reactions taking place during the respective treatments are outlined. The conducted studies (both theoretical and experimental) show that the treatment of graphite powders and CB with acetone, toluene, or phenol can be used as a preliminary stage of their modification and/or functionalization, including their conversion into graphene-like (defective graphene, reduced graphene oxide, and/or graphene oxide) phases. Carbon black nanoparticles (CBNPs) are widely distributed in the environment and are increasingly recognized as a contributor in the development of cardiovascular disease. A variety of cardiac injuries and diseases result from structural and functional damage to cardiomyocytes. This study explored the mechanisms of CBNPs-mediated myocardial toxicity. CBNPs were given to mice through intra-tracheal instillation and it was demonstrated that the particles can be taken up into the cardiac tissue. Exposure to CBNPs induced cardiomyocyte inflammation and apoptosis. In combination with in vitro experiments, we showed that CBNPs increased the ROS and induced mitochondria fragmentation. Functionally, CBNPs-exposed cardiomyocyte exhibited depolarization of the mitochondrial membrane potential, release of cytochrome c , and activation of pro-apoptotic BAX, thereby initiating programmed cell death. On the other hand, CBNPs impaired autophagy, leading to the inadequate removal of dysfunctional mitochondria. The excess accumulation of damaged mitochondria further stimulated NF-κB activation and triggered the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway. Both the antioxidant N -acetylcysteine and the autophagy activator rapamycin were effective to attenuate the damage of CBNPs on cardiomyocytes. Taken together, this study elucidated the potential mechanism underlying CBNPs-induced myocardial injury and provided a scientific reference for the evaluation and prevention of the CBNPs-related heart risk. The most crucial goal is the improvement of Ultra High Temperature Ceramic (UHTC) fracture toughness without negatively impacting the ceramic high-temperature properties. Carbon nanostructures in UHTCs appear to be one of the most promising ways forward. The influence of reduced graphene oxide vs. carbon black on microstructure and properties of TiB 2 -SiC ceramics is studied. The composite ceramic samples with additive contents up to 7.4 wt% were manufactured via the reactive hot pressing of B 4 C-TiC-Si-reduced graphene oxide/carbon black precursors at 1850 °С and 30 MPa for 4 min. The sintered materials composition and structure were analysed with Raman spectroscopy, XRD, SEM, and TEM. Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) survives the hot-pressing procedure and, at lower concentrations, distributes inside the TiB 2 -SiC matrix in the form of separate sheets. However, at 7.4 wt%, the rGO was shown to agglomerate. The rGO improved the hardness, fracture toughness, and thermal conductivity of the TiB 2 -SiC by up to 16%, 20%, and 53%, respectively. The composite characteristics reached the values of H V = 26.1 GPa, K 1 C = 7.4 MPa∙m1/2, and k = 69 W/m∙K. Rubber–metal parts inside the car require rubber compounds capable of ensuring optimal function and maximum service life without interface delamination. From this perspective, the strength of the bond which is created by the chemical interaction of rubber and metal by an adhesive is decisive for ensuring the functionality of the entire compound. It is dependent not only on the choice of the right adhesive but also on the rubber compound ingredients and their amount. Here, the influence of different types of carbon blacks as well as different curing systems in combination with a commonly used adhesive is described. The durability of the metal–adhesive–rubber bond is characterized by a specially designed shear strength analysis under quasi-static loading, whereas a significant influence of the structure of the carbon black has shown. Microwave-assisted carbothermal reduction has been innovatively developed for the low-temperature synthesis of high-purity submicron TiB 2 powders. The thermodynamic research of TiO 2 -B 4 C-C system and relevant reactions showed that suitable excess addition of B 4 C was required to compensate for the boron source evaporation loss. The effect of excess addition of B 4 C (0 −15 wt%) and synthesis temperature (1350 −1550 °C) on the phase composition, purity, and morphology of the products have been investigated. Submicron TiB 2 powders (0.75 µm) with high-purity (0.36% residual C and 0.53% O) were successfully synthesized at 1450 °C for 20 min under microwave assistance with TiO 2 , excess 5 wt% B 4 C, and carbon black. Additionally, the as-synthesized TiB 2 powders after spark plasma sintering at 2000 °C for 15 min showed a relatively higher sinterability, namely increased at 7.7% relative density of sintered ceramic when compared with the commercially available powders owing to the lower O content and submicron-scale size. • Size-resolved Effective density of submicron atmospheric particles in Shenzhen were measured online using DMA-CPMA-CPC combined system. • Bimodal distribution feature of particle effective density was identified, including a main density mode and a sub density mode, by bimodal Gaussian fitting. • Particle effective density exhibited a high occurrence frequency of bimodal distribution, and two density modes exhibited opposite size distribution trends. • Effective density variation was highly correlated with the proportion of OA, sulfates and BC. Effective density (ρ eff) is one of the most important physical properties of atmospheric particles, providing important references in exploring the emissions and aging processes of fresh particles. In this study, a combined system of differential mobility analyzer, centrifugal particle mass analyzer, and condensation particle counter was used to periodically measure the ρ eff of atmospheric particles in Shenzhen from Oct. 2021 to Jan. 2022. Results showed that the ρ eff of particles with various size presented a bimodal distribution, which could be divided into main density (ρ m , main peak, corresponding to relatively dense particles after aging) and sub density (ρ s , sub peak, corresponding to fresh particles). The occurrence frequencies of ρ s of particles with diameters of 50 and 80 nm were less than 20%, but were as high as about 40% of that with diameters from 120 to 350 nm. The ρ m showed increasing trend with the size of particles, while ρ s decreased as the increasing of the size of particles. The ρ eff on pollution day varied significantly with chemical compositions. The increasing of the proportion of sulfate could promote the increasing of ρ eff , while black carbon and organic matter caused opposite effects, which may be related to various factors, including the difference of the material density and morphology of various chemical components. The ρ eff of 50, 80 and 120 nm particles decreased considerably during the new particle formation event, indicating that organic condensation was an important contributor to new particle growth. MoSe2 as one graphene-like 2D transition metal selenide has attracted great attention. However, its application for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is still restricted by the poor electrical conductivity and structural restacking. In this work, an excellent electrocatalyst for hydrogen production is developed based on the in situ synthesis of V-doped MoSe2 confined on carbon black nanoparticles (denoted as V-MoSe2/CB) via a sol–gel process. The characterization results show that the carbon black nanoparticles can protect the V-MoSe2 nanosheets from agglomeration, resulting in ultra-thin thickness and short vertical lattice arrays. Meanwhile, density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that vanadium doping can optimize the electronic structure of MoSe2. Accordingly, compared to the pure MoSe2, V-MoSe2 and MoSe2/CB electrocatalysts, V-MoSe2/CB exhibits improved electrocatalytic activity with a small overpotential of 166 mV at −10 mA cm−2 and a small Tafel slope of 65 mV dec−1. Perylene dianhydride (PDA), a low-cost, readily available, and chemically stable organic cathode material, has received extensive attention in recent years. However, its large π planar structure often results in poor or difficult-to-control micro-nanostructures during conventional electrode processing methods, such as dry mixing. This leads to limited cycling life and rate performance. Here, we present a simple electrospinning strategy for controlling the micro-nanostructures of electrodes based on PDA, carbon black Super P (SP), and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) composites. The spinnable PVDF polymer not only provides the micro-nanofibrous structure but also realizes the function of the binder in the electrodes, offering the hierarchical micro-nanostructures of the electrospun PDA (PDA-es) electrodes. The unique structure enables PDA-es electrodes to possess rapid charge transport properties and ultrafast reaction kinetics. Specifically, the PDA electrode based on high molecular weight electrospun PVDF (PDA-es-H) demonstrates a high initial specific capacity (126.2 mA h g−1), robust cycling stability (∼95% and ∼60% capacity retention after 100 cycles at 50 mA h g−1 and 1000 cycles at 100 mA h g−1, respectively), and excellent rate performance. During wildfires and fossil fuel combustion, biomass is converted to black carbon (BC) via incomplete combustion. BC enters the ocean by rivers and atmospheric deposition contributing to the marine dissolved organic carbon (DOC) pool. The fate of BC is considered to reside in the marine DOC pool, where the oldest BC 14C ages have been measured (>20,000 14C y), implying long-term storage. DOC is the largest exchangeable pool of organic carbon in the oceans, yet most DOC (>80%) remains molecularly uncharacterized. Here, we report C measurements on size-fractionated dissolved BC (DBC) obtained using benzene polycarboxylic acids as molecular tracers to constrain the sources and cycling of DBC and its contributions to refractory DOC (RDOC) in a site in the North Pacific Ocean. Our results reveal that the cycling of DBC is more dynamic and heterogeneous than previously believed though it does not comprise a single, uniformly "old" 14C age. Instead, both semilabile and refractory DBC components are distributed among size fractions of DOC. We report that DBC cycles within DOC as a component of RDOC, exhibiting turnover in the ocean on millennia timescales. DBC within the low-molecular-weight DOC pool is large, environmentally persistent and constitutes the size fraction that is responsible for long-term DBC storage. We speculate that sea surface processes, including bacterial remineralization (via the coupling of photooxidation of surface DBC and bacterial co-metabolism), sorption onto sinking particles and surface photochemical oxidation, modify DBC composition and turnover, ultimately controlling the fate of DBC and RDOC in the ocean. Nanostructured electrode materials have attracted enormous attention because of their kinetic advantages endorsed by nanoscale regime. Densification is required to improve their volumetric densities for practical applications but is challenged by the loss of kinetic features. In this work, a nano‐densification strategy is developed by co‐sintering nanosized titanate with a phosphate agent and acid‐treated carbon black. Experimental studies reveal that the formation of Ti─O─P bonds energetically facilitates the dissociation of crystal water in titanate, enabling lower‐temperature consolidation of the nanostructures that avoids grain growth. Simultaneously, phosphorylation improves charge carrier concentration and electron conductivity of the titanate. Together with the incorporation of hydrophilic carbon black, the treated nano‐titanate electrode reaches a bulk‐level compaction density of 2.35 g cm−3. As an anode for Li‐ion batteries, the densified electrode shows improved electrochemical performance with a specific capacity of 88.4 mA h g−1 at 20 A g−1. When pairing with a high‐voltage LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cathode, the hybrid device demonstrates an outstanding combination of energy and power densities. Hansen Solubility Parameters (HSP), viewed in the context of similarity whenever dispersion is focused, offer valuable insights into the surface characteristics of nanoparticles. However, existing methods for determining HSP via the sedimentation of nanoparticles require multiple probe liquids, resulting in time‐consuming, costly experiments with potential health risks. To address this, we developed a two‐step strategy that enables a systematic selection of liquids. The key element of the approach is to first identify the rough location of the Hansen sphere in the three‐dimensional Hansen space using a well‐chosen set of probe liquids of different polarities and chemical structures. Then, depending on the outcome of the first step, a particular choice of liquids is made for the final HSP determination. Taken together, the introduced procedure reduces the amount of required liquids for experiments from currently more than ten to a maximum of seven chosen based on a well‐defined, coherent methodology. Validation was performed on carbon black, non‐pigmentary nano‐scale titania, silicon/carbon composites, and lanthanum cobaltite particles, i. e. relevant materials that are commonly utilized in fuel cells, batteries, cyclohexene oxidation, catalytic combustion, photocatalysis, and heterogeneous Fenton reactions. Wearable glucose biosensors enable noninvasive glucose monitoring, thereby enhancing blood glucose management. In this work, we present a wearable biosensor based on carbon black nanoparticles (CBNPs) for glucose detection in human sweat. The biosensor consists of CBNPs, Prussian blue (PB), glucose oxidase, chitosan, and Nafion. The fabricated biosensor has a linear range of 5 µM to 1250 µM, sensitivity of 14.64 µA mM−1 cm−2, and a low detection potential (−0.05 V, vs. Ag/AgCl). The detection limit for glucose was calculated as 4.83 µM. This reusable biosensor has good selectivity and stability and exhibits a good response to glucose in real sweat. [Display omitted] Solar-driven desalination is an environmentally sustainable method to alleviate the problems of freshwater scarcity and the energy crisis. However, how to improve the synergy between the photothermal material and the evaporator to achieve high photothermal conversion efficiency simultaneously, excellent thermal management system and good salt resistance remains a challenge. Here, a mushroom-shaped solar evaporation device is designed and fabricated with iron diselenide/carbon black (FeSe 2 /CB) coated cellulose acetate (CA) film as mushroom surface and cotton swab as mushroom handle, which presented high solar-driven evaporation and excellent salt resistance. Thanks to the unique photothermal effect and the synergistic effect, the FeSe 2 /CB composites enabled a promising photothermal conversion efficiency of up to 65.8 °C after 180 s. The mushroom-shaped evaporation device effectively overcomes water transport and steam spillage channel blockage caused by salt crystallization through its unique vertical transport water channels and conical air–water interface. When exposed to real sunlight, the solar evaporation rate of the steam generation structure reached as high as 2.03 kg m−2 h−1, which is more than 13 times higher than natural evaporation. This study offered new insights into the higher solar-driven evaporation rate and salt-blocking resistance of the FeSe 2 /CB mushroom-shaped solar evaporation device for solar-powered water production. Biomass renewable fiber has the advantages of low cost and environmental friendliness; however, its application as a reinforcement material is limited owing to its poor reinforcement effect. Thus, expanding its application is still a major challenge. This study investigates the effect of hemp fiber (HF) of different lengths on the mechanical properties and fatigue behavior of styrene-butadiene rubber/carbon black (SBR/CB) compounds using high-pressure low-shear extrusion. The results showed that the length of the HF retained by the extrusion process was approximately 10 times that of the traditional internal mixing process (internal mixing and open mixing). Interface bonding between the long HF coated with butadiene-vinyl pyridine latex (VPL) and the SBR/CB matrix was improved significantly. This inhibited the fatigue-crack propagation and considerably improved the dynamic fatigue life of the notched specimens. The dynamic fatigue life of the notched specimens of the composite prepared by the extrusion process was approximately nine times longer than that of the traditional internal mixing process. The results showed that the long HF length retained after the extrusion process effectively enhanced the strength of the rubber composites and significantly improved the dynamic fatigue life of rubber products under alternating stress. There are several industrial uses for carbon black (CB), an extremely fine powdered form of elemental carbon that is made up of coalesced particle aggregates and almost spherical colloidal particles. Most carbon black is produced from petroleum-derived feedstock, so there is a need to find an alternative method to produce CB, which relies on renewable resources such as algae and agricultural waste. A process involving hydrolysis, carbonization, and pyrolysis of green algae and sugarcane bagasse was developed, as the optimal hydrolysis conditions (16N sulfuric acid, 70 °C, 1 h, 1:30 g/ml GA or SC to sulfuric acid ratio), a hydrolysis ratio of 62% for SC and 85% for GA were achieved. The acidic solution was carbonized using a water bath, and the solid carbon was then further pyrolyzed at 900 °C. The obtained carbon black has a high carbon content of about 90% which is confirmed by EDX, XRD, and XPS analysis. By comparison carbon black from sugar cane bagasse (CBB) and carbon black from green algae Ulva lactuca (CBG) with commercial carbon black (CCB) it showed the same morphology which was confirmed by SEM analysis. The BET data, showed the high specific surface area of prepared CB, which was 605 (m2/g) for CBB and 424 (m2/g) for CBG compared with commercial carbon black (CBB) was 50 (m2/g), also the mean pore diameter of CBB, CBG and CCB indicated that CBB and CBG were rich in micropores, but CCB was rich in mesoporous according to IUPAC classification. Background: Ambient air pollutants have been suggested to affect pubertal development. Nevertheless, current studies indicate inconsistent effects of these pollutants, causing precocious or delayed puberty onset. This study aimed to explore the associations between long-term exposure to particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters ≤ 2.5 μm (PM2.5) along with its components and menarche timing among Chinese girls. Method: Self-reported age at menarche was collected among 855 girls from China Health and Nutrition Survey 2004 to 2015. The pre-menarche annual average concentrations of PM2.5 and its components were calculated on the basis of a long-term (2000–2014) high-resolution PM2.5 components dataset. Generalized linear models (GLM) and logistic regression models were used to analyze the associations of exposure to a single pollutant (PM2.5, sulfate, nitrate, ammonium, black carbon and organic matter) with age at menarche and early menarche (< 12 years), respectively. Weighted quantile sum methods were applied to examine the impacts of joint exposure on menarche timing. Results: In the adjusted GLM, per 1 µg/m3 increase of annual average concentrations of nitrate and ammonium decreased age at menarche by 0.098 years and 0.127 years, respectively (all P < 0.05). Every 1 µg/m3 increase of annual average concentrations of PM2.5 (OR: 1.04, 95% CI: 1.00-1.08), sulfate (OR: 1.23, 95% CI: 1.01–1.50), nitrate (OR: 1.23, 95% CI: 1.06–1.43) and ammonium (OR: 1.32, 95% CI: 1.06–1.66) were significantly positively associated with early menarche. Higher level of joint exposure to PM2.5 and its components was associated with 11% higher odds of early menarche (P = 0.04). Additionally, the estimated weight of sulfate was the largest among the mixed pollutants. Conclusions: Long-term exposure to PM2.5 and its components could increase the risk of early menarche among Chinese girls. Waxgels are known for their unique ability to generate sacrificial wax layers during anti-icing. To address the severe slow regrowth of the wax layer, here, carbon black is incorporated in the waxgel network to endow photothermal function. The rate of the regrowth of the wax layer is raised by >6 times under natural light conditions. The German Bight in the southern North Sea receives nutrients, dissolved organic matter (DOM), and trace metals from rivers, porewater reflux, and porewater outwelling. We studied the marine, riverine, and porewater sources analyzing molecular transformations of solid-phase extracted (SPE) DOM in the German Bight. We applied a combination of ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) with quantitative data of dissolved organic sulfur (DOS), dissolved black carbon (DBC), dissolved trace metals (Ba, Co, Gd, Mo, Mn, W), and nutrients (nitrite, nitrate, phosphate, silicate). While aromatic DOM and DBC mainly originated from the rivers, nitrogen-containing, more saturated DOM was enriched offshore suggesting greater contributions of marine (algal) sources. Except for dissolved Mo, rivers were the primary source of trace metals and nutrients. However, tidal flats contributed to dissolved nutrient (e.g., dissolved phosphate), trace metal and DOS inventories of the southern North Sea. The input of DOS from intertidal flats was identified by the molecular index derived from sulfidic porewaters (ISuP), non-conservative behavior of elemental sulfur-to-carbon ratio and sulfur content of molecular formulae (from FT-ICR-MS). Dissolved Mn and Si were removed in the German Bight, likely due to precipitation as Mn(hydr)oxides and biological uptake, respectively. Preliminary estimates suggest that DOS from porewater outwelling is approximately four times higher than DOS discharged by the three main rivers in the region. Our study therefore highlights the need to consider porewater discharge in addition to riverine sources to comprehensively assess elemental budgets within the complex interplay and transformations of DOM, nutrients, and trace metals in coastal ecosystems. The (W,Mo,Ta,Nb,Ti)(C,N) high-entropy carbonitride powders were synthesized by the carbothermal reduction nitridation method, utilizing equimolar proportions of either graphite or carbon black. The subsequent utilization of these pre-synthesized powders yielded carbonitride ceramics after spark plasma sintering. The choice of carbon source played an important role in the microstructure, phase compositions and mechanical properties. By employing carbon black with its fine particle size and high reactivity, the synthesized powder maintained finer size, narrow powder size distribution (350 ± 12 nm) and have less free-carbon (∼0.032 wt%), which contributed to the high hardness (26.8 ± 1.4 GPa) of the sintered ceramic. Conversely, utilizing graphite with its larger particle size and lower reactivity would increase the fraction of free-carbon, leading to the deterioration of the ceramic's performance. SiBCN ceramics were prepared by a novel inorganic method: the in situ reaction of amorphous SiBON and C. Differences in the mechanical and ablation properties of composites prepared from flake graphite and carbon black (denoted as C f /CGZ and C f /CBZ, respectively) were compared to find a suitable carbon source. The results showed that flake graphite is the optimal carbon source. The fracture toughness of the C f /CGZ composite was 9.1 ± 0.4 MPa·m1/2, which is 23.0% higher than that of the C f /CBZ composite. This is because the flake graphite promoted crack deflection. Furthermore, after exposure to a plasma flame with a heat flux of 6.68 MW/m2 for 300 s, the mass and linear ablation rates of the C f /CGZ composite are 0.39 mg/s and − 0.19 µm/s, respectively, which is a decrease of 22.00% and 64.81%, respectively, as compared to those of the C f /CBZ composite. This is because of the directional distribution of flake graphite, which improved the thermal conductivity, reduced the ablation surface temperature, and facilitated the formation of a dense ZrO 2 /SiO 2 layer as an anti-ablation barrier. Records of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration, sea-surface temperature, and global vegetation show that Earth's climate and environment changed significantly during the late Miocene-early Pliocene. Understanding the environmental response to insolation forcing during this transitional period may provide insights into future environmental variations resulting from the perturbation of the global carbon cycle caused by fossil fuel combustion. However, terrestrial paleoclimate records capable of resolving orbital time-scale environmental variations are mostly from Europe, especially from the region around the Mediterranean Sea. Here, we present high-resolution records of grain size, black carbon, and geochemistry from a sedimentary sequence from the northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau, where precipitation is mainly via the East Asian summer monsoon. We observed increases in sediment accumulation rate and black carbon mass accumulation rate at ca. 5.3 Ma, which we interpret as the result of intensified seasonal precipitation associated with the strengthening of the East Asian summer monsoon; concurrently, precessional and obliquity cycles became more prominent during the early Pliocene. Our results suggest that, in response to current and future high atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations, changes in the East Asian summer monsoon are likely to result in increased precipitation and seasonality within its region of influence. The authors explore the development of paper-based electronics using carbon-based composites with a biodegradable matrix based on ethyl cellulose and dibasic ester solvent. The main focus is on screen-printing techniques for creating flexible, eco-friendly electronic devices. This research evaluates the printability with the rheological measurements, electrical properties, flexibility, and adhesion of these composites, considering various compositions, including graphene, graphite, and carbon black. Three types of composites were tested for electromagnetic interference (EMI) absorption shielding effectiveness, the curing process, and their physical–mechanical properties. For the first type of composites, nickel–zinc ferrite, manganese–zinc ferrite, and both fillers in their mutual combinations were incorporated into acrylonitrile–butadiene rubber. The overall content of the filler, or fillers, was kept at 200 phr. Then, carbon black or carbon fibers were incorporated into each rubber formulation at a constant loading of—25 phr, while the content of magnetic fillers was unchanged, at —200 phr. This work focused on the understanding of correlations between the electromagnetic shielding parameters and electrical conductivity of composites in relation to their EMI absorption shielding effectiveness. The absorption shielding abilities of materials were evaluated within a frequency bandwidth from 1 MHz to 6 GHz. This study revealed good correlation among permittivity, conductivity, and EMI absorption effectiveness. Although the absorption shielding efficiency of composites filled only with ferrites seems to be the highest, the absorption maxima of those composites reached over 6 GHz. The application of carbon-based fillers resulted in the higher electrical conductivity and higher permittivity of composites, which was reflected in their lower absorption shielding performance. However, the composites filled with ferrites and carbon-based fillers absorbed electromagnetic radiation within the desired frequency range. The presence of carbon-based fillers caused improvement in the tensile behavior of composites. This study also demonstrated that the higher the ratio of nickel–zinc ferrite in combined magnetic fillers, the better the absorption shielding efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effects of heavy fuel oil and biodiesel blends on engine combustion and emissions were studied in a marine two-stroke diesel engine. The engine was operated under propeller conditions using five different fuels with biodiesel blends of 10% (B10), 30% (B30), 50% (B50), and sulphur contents of 0.467% low sulphur fuel oil (LSFO) and 2.9% high sulphur fuel oil (HSFO). Tests have shown that using a biodiesel blend increases the engine fuel consumption due to its lower calorific value. Heavy fuel oil has a high Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) content, which leads to higher exhaust temperatures due to severe afterburning in the engine. A comparison of engine soot emissions under different fuel conditions was carried out, and it was found that the oxygen content in biodiesel promoted the oxidation of soot particles during the combustion process, which reduced the soot emissions of biodiesel. Compared to HSFO, B10, B30, B50 and LSFO, the soot emission concentrations were reduced by 50.2%, 56.4%, 61% and 37.4%, respectively. In our experiments, the soot particles in the engine exhaust were sampled with a thermal float probe. Using Raman spectroscopy analysis, it was found that as the biodiesel ratio increased, the degree of carbonisation of the soot particles in the exhaust became less than that in the oxygenation process, resulting in a decrease in the degree of graphitisation. Background: Black carbon (BC) encompasses a range of carbonaceous materials––including soot, char, and charcoal––derived from the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels and biomass. Urban soils can become enriched in BC due to proximity to these combustion sources. We conducted a literature review of BC in urban soils globally and found 26 studies reporting BC and total organic carbon (TOC) content collected to a maximum of 578 cm depth in urban soils across 35 cities and 10 countries. We recorded data on city, climate, and land use/land cover characteristics to examine drivers of BC content and contribution to TOC in soil. Results: All studies were conducted in the northern hemisphere, with 68% of the data points collected in China and the United States. Surface samples (0–20 cm) accounted for 62% of samples in the dataset. Therefore, we focused our analysis on 0–10 cm and 10–20 cm depths. Urban soil BC content ranged from 0–124 mg/g (median = 3 mg/g) at 0–10 cm and from 0–53 mg/g (median = 2.8 mg/g) at 10–20 cm depth. The median proportional contribution of BC to TOC was 23% and 15% at 0–10 cm and 10–20 cm, respectively. Surface soils sampled in industrial land use and near roads had the highest BC contents and proportions, whereas samples from residential sites had among the lowest. Soil BC content decreased with mean annual soil temperature. Conclusions: Our review indicates that BC comprises a major fraction (nearly one quarter) of the TOC in urban surface soils, yet sampling bias towards the surface could hide the potential for BC storage at depth. Land use emerged as an importer driver of soil BC contents and proportions, whereas land cover effects remain uncertain. Warmer and wetter soils were found to have lower soil BC than cooler and drier soils, differences that likely reflect soil BC loss mechanisms. In Chinese paintings, the marriage of rice paper and ink is the soul of this art. Ink possesses a highly distinctive "color" expressiveness. By employing ink, various shades of black and diverse color effects can be portrayed, making the image more rich, vibrant, and three-dimensional on a rice paper. However, when used in traditional ink wash painting, the flow and penetration of conventional ink is difficult to control, and its carbon black particles make it a challenge to achieve multiple transparent gradients. Considering the water solubility and two-dimensional nanostructure of graphene oxide (GO), the authors of this paper has developed and proposed the use of water-based GO ink for Chinese ink wash painting, aiming to endow it with new aesthetic forms and unique expressive potentials. Short-term exposure to ultra-fine Black Carbon (BC) particles produced during incomplete fuel combustion of wood and fossil fuel has been linked to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, hospitalizations and premature deaths. The goal of this research was to assess traffic-related BC in a cold climate along an urban highway and 300 m into an adjacent residential neighborhood. BC was measured with an aethalometer (MA350, Aethlabs) along the main traffic artery in geothermally heated Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland (64.135° N–21.895° W, 230,000 inhabitants). Stationary monitoring confirmed that traffic was the dominant source of roadside BC in winter, averaging 1.0 ± 1.1 µg/m3 (0.6 and 1.1 µg/m3 median and interquartile range; 28,000 vehicles/day). Inter-day variations in BC were primarily correlated to the atmospheric lapse rate and wind speed, both during stationary and mobile campaigns. During winter stills, BC levels surpassed 10 µg/m3 at intersections and built up to 5 µg/m3 during the afternoon in the residential neighborhood (adjacent to the highway with 43,000 vehicles/day). The BC penetrated deeply into the neighborhood, where the lowest concentration was 1.8 µg/m3 within 300 m. The CeO 2 catalyst is commonly utilized in diesel particulate filter (DPF) to promote soot regeneration. It is necessary to give a particular attention to the performance of hydrothermal aging and the effect on DPF regeneration characteristics. Based on the fixed-bed test bench, the gas and particle emission characteristics of carbon black (PU) oxidation following hydrothermal aging and sieving treatment of CeO 2 are investigated under a 3% water concentration condition. CeO 2 is subjected to characterization and analysis combined with X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Electron Spin Resonance Spectroscopy (ESR), X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The results indicate that the addition of fresh CeO 2 proves beneficial in improving the oxidation efficiency (η) of PU, reducing CO emission and the total average particle number (PN). Meanwhile, CO 2 emission rapidly increases. After hydrothermal aging, the average catalyst size and agglomeration degree of CeO 2 increase, resulting in an increase in lattice defects and bulk oxygen vacancies (V O-b). The reduction of surface oxygen vacancies (V O-s) plays a dominant role in the catalytic oxidation process of PU, leading to a decrease in η and CO 2 emission, while CO increase; And the contact mode between CeO 2 and PU, as well as alterations in the microstructure of CeO 2 , consequently contributing to hindering particle movement and reducing total PN. Furthermore, the sieving treatment of catalyst increases particle emission, but significantly promotes the η and reduces harmful gas CO. This research establishes a theoretical and experimental foundation for enhancing the hydrothermal stability of catalysts and controlling particle emission at the DPF outlet.
