Southern Ocean zooplankton provide globally significant ecosystem services through their role in carbon sequestration, nutrient cycling and food webs. However, the remote and extreme nature of the Southern Ocean creates significant logistical difficulties for studying zooplankton all year round. Here, for the first time in the Southern Ocean, we present the seasonal occurrence of the zooplankton assemblage in the Northeast Scotia Sea using a sediment trap deployed throughout 2018 (P3 observation site, 52.80˚ S, 40.14˚ W). Results show that copepods and pteropods dominated trap abundance, representing 25.0–68.3% and 13.4–72.5% respectively, followed by amphipods (1.0–7.2%) and hydrozoa (0.2–15.6%). The dominant signal in copepods was consistent with previous observations using traditional (net) sampling methods while the relative contribution of pteropods, amphipods and hydrozoa was increased in our trap. Further, zooplankton showed taxon-specific seasonal signals, with a relatively high number of individuals throughout winter, including an increase in hydrozoa occurrences. This observation highlights the importance of zooplankton as source of nutrition for the benthic community in the winter. Due to the demand for carbon neutrality, concrete carbonation has been reconsidered as an interesting topic because of its potential for capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. Concrete carbonation can significantly modify the chemical and microstructure properties of concrete and thus will have important effects on chloride diffusion. This paper presents a chloride diffusion model in which the concrete cover is divided into three different zones, each with their own defined porosity and chloride binding isotherm. The first is the fully carbonated concrete near the surface, where the porosity and chloride binding isotherm can be obtained from the experimental data of fully carbonated concrete. The second is the uncarbonated concrete near the reinforcement, where the porosity and chloride binding isotherm can be obtained from the experimental data of normal concrete. The third is the transition zone between the fully carbonated and uncarbonated concretes, where the porosity and chloride binding isotherm can be assumed to vary continuously from the carbonated concrete to uncarbonated concrete. To validate the present model, a comparison of the present model with published experimental results is provided, which demonstrates the importance of considering different zones in the chloride diffusion model when the concrete has a carbonated layer near the surface. Biochar is recognized for its potential in mitigating climate change, especially through carbon sequestration and soil improvement. To this end, it is important to use all co-products from pyrolysis in a sustainable and economically viable way. In this study, the conversion of sugarcane bagasse at varying pyrolysis temperatures was investigated using 1H NMR spectroscopy and Chenomx for liquid fraction analysis. The yield of biochar decreased significantly from 45.3 to 3.5% with a temperature increase of 300 to 1000 °C. The morphological analysis revealed that biochar produced at lower temperatures (300 °C and 400 °C) showed tubular and spongy structures, whereas at higher temperatures (600 °C and 800 °C), the structures morphed into holes and thinned further, ultimately degrading further at 1000 °C. All samples of biochar showed characteristics promising for soil improvement and carbon sequestration (O/C < 0.4). The analysis of liquid fractions revealed that biomethanol reached its highest concentration of 19.28 mM at 800 °C, which coincided with the highest production of acetic and lactic acids. Additionally, the highest concentration of acetone was observed at 600 °C. These findings highlight the importance of optimizing pyrolysis conditions for enhanced yields of biochar and platform compounds, as well as the potential of the NMR and Chenomx in bioenergy research. Biomass feedstocks are growing in importance due to their ability to serve as a renewable alternative to fossil fuels for large scale energy generation, with bioenergy projected to be a growing part of the UK's energy mix. Combined with technologies such as carbon capture and storage, sustainable bioenergy has the potential to produce negative emissions with including counterbalancing residual emissions. This paper presents a systematic review of the sustainability impacts of wood biomass (forestry/SRC) and Miscanthus, which are grown as energy fuels, comparing the three key indicators of sustainability: soil organic carbon sequestration rates, biodiversity, and water use efficiency (WUE). Analysis has shown significant influence from primary soil composition (p < 0.001) and previous land use (p < 0.001) on soil organic carbon sequestration rates following conversion to biomass feedstock production. Conversion from arable to forestry can have positive rates of sequestration of 1.4 ± 0.3 Mg C ha−1 year−1 on mineral soils, while similar conversions on a highly organic soils can lead to losses of −25 Mg C ha−1 year−1. This indicates a strong need for careful site selection for future forestry plantations. Miscanthus showed no preference under mineral or organic soils for carbon sequestration rate. Biodiversity at different trophic scales is impacted differently by biomass feedstock production. No significant impact on invertebrates was demonstrated between feedstocks but there is a significant difference between crops (p < 0.001) for vertebrates at higher trophic levels. A limited dataset was collected for WUE from the review, but analysis showed comparable WUE rates for Miscanthus and short rotation coppice, while forestry had significantly lower (p < 0.001) WUE. With global temperatures increasing and changes to climate, water stress is likely to increase. Carbon Dioxide Removals (CDR) and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) have received a lot of attention as a tool to mitigate climate change and reach climate neutrality. Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) is seen as one of the more promising CDRs, and from 2026, the Danish utility Ørsted is establishing the first BECCS plants in Denmark. We present a case study of BECCS by installing CCS at a biomass‐fired CHP plant and the aim is to quantify the CDR potential and carbon dynamics of the BECCS system. Moreover, the study aims to quantify the emissions related to capturing and store CO2. The GHG emissions from CCS including heat, electricity, transport and storage are approximately 100 kgCO2/t stored CO2 and the carbon payback time of the BECCS system is 3–4 years relative to leaving the wood in the forest or at processing industries. The main driver of the payback time is the additional use of biomass to operate CCS which shifts the timing of CO2 emissions more towards the present. The additional biomass use also increases supply chain emissions, and on top of that, only 90% of the direct CO2 emissions from the CHP plant are captured. The study illustrates the importance of temporal scope in assessing the CDR potential of BECCS. With continuous use of biomass, GHG emissions are 207 kgCO2/t stored CO2 in year 1 and −742 kgCO2/t stored CO2 in year 99. This study reveals inconsistencies in the assessment of the CDR potential of BECCS in the literature. There is a considerable need for further research within this field to assess how BECCS can contribute to mitigating climate change and on the appropriate scale of BECCS deployment. Industrial exhaust gases and gas fields are two significant sources of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions that contribute to the rising levels of CO2 in the atmosphere. Among the various emission reduction systems, the CCSU (Carbon Capture, Storage, and Utilization) system has garnered extensive attention and research. This research aims to obtain the superstructure network sequentially in the CCSU system using GAMS (General Algebraic Modeling System). A mathematical approach was developed to optimize the amount of CO2 stored and utilized by varying the time difference (dt) between the source and sink from 0 to 10 years. After calculating the economic potential (EP), it was found that the Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) system for both sources has a negative impact. In contrast, the CCSU system enhances the economic potential (EP) by generating a positive value. This is possible as the captured CO2 can be sold to the utilization sink, thereby creating a revenue stream. The EP for CO2 reduction from gas fields is greater than that from the industry, 21.68 × 106 USD compared to 12.50 × 106 USD at dt min10 years. Siliceous diatoms are one of the most prominent actors in the oceans, and they account for approximately 40% of the primary production and particulate organic carbon export flux. It is believed that changes in carbon flux caused by variations in diatom distribution can lead to significant climate shifts. Although the fundamental pathways of diatom-driven carbon sequestration have long been established, there are no reports of CaCO3 precipitation induced by marine diatom species. This manuscript introduces novel details regarding the enhancement of aragonite precipitation during photosynthesis in Skeletonema costatum in both artificial and natural seawater. Through direct measurements of cell surfaces via a pH microelectrode and zeta potential analyzer, it was determined that the diatom-mediated promotion of CaCO3 precipitation is achieved through the creation of specific microenvironments with concentrated [CO32−] and [Ca2+] and/or the dehydrating effect of adsorbed Ca2+. Based on this mechanism, it is highly plausible that diatom-mediated calcification could occur in the oceans, an assertion that was supported by the significant deviation of total alkalinity (TA) from the conservative TA-salinity mixing line during a Skeletonema costatum bloom in the East China Sea and other similar occurrences. The newly discovered calcification pathway establishes a link between particulate inorganic and organic carbon flux and thus helps in the reassessment of marine carbon export fluxes and CO2 sequestration efficiency. Economic development and industrialization are usually associated with severe environmental pollution. Differently, China's poverty alleviation programs did not compromise its environment for the sake of economic development. China has lifted hundreds of poverty-stricken counties out of absolute poverty following the implementation of various poverty alleviation policies. We take a staggered difference-in-difference approach within a quasi-experiment to examine the effects of "poverty hat" removal on air pollution. Using panel data of poverty-stricken counties in China for the period 2013–2018, we identify the causal effects on PM2.5, PM10, and SO2 concentration reduction. Our results suggest that removing the poverty hat prompted the counties to reduce their air pollution. In the last few decades of industrial growth, the amount of carbon dioxide has augmented rapidly in to the environment. CO2 rising level in the environment is enormously contributing to increase in surface temperature of earth. The paramount domineering issue is the worrying speed at which the CO2 amount is increasing in the atmosphere. The available CO2-reducing technologies have the potential to reduce emission cost of carbon dioxide. Numerous recommended techniques can be amended to existing plants based on nonrenewable type fuel source. To date, considerable work has been done for CO2 capturing using a variety of adsorbent either commercially available or synthesized by suitable activation technique. In this review paper, CO2 capture by adsorption using a variety of adsorbents such as carbonaceous, non-carbonaceous and modified adsorbents has been studied. Various methods of physical and chemical activation to produce activated carbon for enhanced CO2 capture from different class of biomass have been investigated. All the information in CO2 capture and related issues have been described, summarized and thoroughly presented in the review article with emphasis on date pits-derived activated carbons. Carbon is a key element in industrial production, but CO2 is also a greenhouse gas whose release into the atmosphere must be avoided. If its generation cannot be avoided for process‐related reasons, then a comprehensive carbon management is required to enable climate‐neutral production in industry. Keeping carbon in the loop within the technosphere is a promising idea from a technical perspective when striving for climate‐neutral production. Reporting obligations for greenhouse gases have been focused on release into the atmosphere, often under the tacit assumption that any greenhouse gas (GHG) formed will eventually be emitted. Technologies that build on carbon capture face a situation where regulations are lacking terms to describe processes that produce or use carbon dioxide but do not release it. The carbon footprint of methanol from cradle‐to‐grave is evaluated using three process concepts to capture CO2, i.e., one using CO2 from direct air capture (DAC) and the other two utilizing CO2 from a steel mill's blast furnace gas (BFG). Hydrogen is supplied by onsite electrolysis, or from a German offshore wind park, or an Australian solar park with ammonia as hydrogen carrier. The study is of interest to life cycle assessment (LCA) practitioners, policymakers, and industries' management who are involved in regulating, planning, implementing, and operating projects which aim to produce fuels using hydrogen from electrolysis (so‐called 'e‐fuels'). The influence of assumptions in the RED‐II delegated act regarding recycled carbon fuels and renewable liquid and gaseous fuels of non‐biological origin on the carbon footprint results is examined. The RED‐II assumption regarding the credits for captured CO2 after 2041 indicate that DAC‐based concepts are advantageous with respect to BFG, although the LCA results indicate the opposite. Carbon capture and utilization (CCU) is part of the European Union (EU)'s strategy to become climate‐neutral by 2050. CO2 is needed as a feedstock for the production of climate‐friendly base chemicals and sustainable fuels. Although CO2 capture from industrial point sources is technically feasible and requires less energy than direct air capture, its integration into the circular economy is challenging due to only the temporary recognition of fossil CO2 as a source for the production of climate‐friendly renewable fuels. In this article, CO2 sources such as waste incineration plants, lime production, and steel production are analyzed based on process simulation in terms of their energy demand for CCU and compliance with current EU legislation on renewable fuels over the service life of a CCU plant. The dynamic carbon footprint profile of methanol production from steel mill gases is affected by fluctuations of steel mill gas flow rates and compositions, as well as the composition of electricity mix. The cross‐industrial network of steel mill, gas conditioning, hydrogen production, chemical synthesis, and power generation was simulated under dynamic conditions. Dynamic life cycle assessment (LCA) was carried out for computing the dynamic carbon footprint profile in 15‐min resolution for the integrated system of steel and methanol production. The dynamic LCA indicated that the CO2 emissions in a power plant, electrolytic hydrogen demand, and variations in electricity mix were the major drivers of the fluctuations in the total carbon footprint. Dynamic LCA is useful for quantifying temporal uncertainty in environmental impacts. This insight can be used to analyze uncertainty in impacts for downstream products, processes, and use cases. The Carbon2Chem® project utilizes steel production gases to synthesize methanol, urea, and other commodity chemicals. The complex process involves CO2 capture and hydrogen production and synthesis, requiring precise analysis due to the diverse components in steel mill flue gases. As some of these components could harm the employed catalysts, the analytics needs to ensure the quality of the purification unit and enhance the understanding of transportation effects and performance in gas cleaning and methanol synthesis. The production of renewable and sustainable fuels must comply with the EU regulatory framework (Renewable Energy Directive (EU) 2023/2413, Commission Delegated Regulations (EU) 2023/1184, and (EU) 2023/1185) for the use of renewable energy in the transport sector. The utilization of steel mill gases (SMGs) and alternative CO2 sources (waste incineration plants (WIPs), lime industry) to produce renewable fuels of non‐biological origin (RFNBOs) and recycled carbon fuels (RCFs) are attractive options as a high share of RFNBOs can be achieved with a significant reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to fossil fuel use. In the pursuit of mitigating CO2 emissions, this study investigates the optimization of CO2 purification within a negative CO2 emission power plant using a spray ejector condenser (SEC) coupled with a separator. The approach involves direct‐contact condensation of vapor, primarily composed of an inert gas (CO2), facilitated by a subcooled liquid spray. A comprehensive analysis is presented, employing a numerical model to simulate a cyclone separator under various SEC outlet conditions. Methodologically, the simulation, conducted in Fluent, encompasses three‐dimensional, transient, and turbulent characteristics using the Reynolds stress model turbulent model and mixture model to replicate the turbulent two‐phase flow within a gas–liquid separator. Structural considerations are delved into, evaluating the efficacy of single‐ and dual‐inlet separators to enhance CO2 purification efficiency. The study reveals significant insights into the optimization process, highlighting a notable enhancement in separation efficiency within the dual‐inlet cyclone, compared to its single inlet counterpart. Specifically, a 90.7 % separation efficiency is observed in the former, characterized by symmetrical flow patterns devoid of wavering CO2 cores, whereas the latter exhibits less desirable velocity vectors. Furthermore, the investigation explores the influence of key parameters, such as liquid volume fraction (LVF) and water droplet diameter, on separation efficiency. It is ascertained that a 10 % LVF with a water droplet diameter of 10 µm yields the highest separation efficiency at 90.7 %, whereas a 20 % LVF with a water droplet diameter of 1 µm results in a reduced efficiency of 50.79 %. Moreover, the impact of structural modifications, such as the addition of vanes, on separation efficiency and pressure drop is explored. Remarkably, the incorporation of vanes leads to a 9.2 % improvement in separation efficiency and a 16.8 % reduction in pressure drop at a 10 % LVF. The findings underscore the significance of structural considerations and parameter optimization in advancing CO2 capture technologies, with implications for sustainable energy production and environmental conservation. The scale at which New Zealand is currently storing and sequestering blue carbon, and could create additional blue carbon via restoration, has been unclear. Here, we calculate a preliminary estimate for the current extent of three key blue carbon ecosystems (saltmarshes, mangrove forests and seagrass meadows), their carbon stocks and their carbon sequestration rates using the best available data to provide a preliminary estimate of blue carbon in New Zealand. We also use local examples to explore opportunities to create additional blue carbon. Based on the available literature, we estimate the current extent of New Zealand's blue carbon ecosystems to be 76,152 ha, which is 1.0% of the area of terrestrial native forests. Our preliminary estimate of New Zealand's blue carbon stock is 2.66–3.76 Mt of carbon, with a current carbon sequestration rate of 0.12 (0.05–0.26) Mt/CO2/yr, which is equivalent to 0.16% of New Zealand's 2021 gross emissions. Restoration of saltmarshes could enhance their carbon sink capacity, mangrove forests are naturally expanding and seagrass meadow restoration techniques at scale are still in development. Watershed ecosystems play a pivotal role in maintaining the global carbon cycle and reducing global warming by serving as vital carbon reservoirs for sustainable ecosystem management. In this study, we based on the "quantity-mechanism-scenario" frameworks, integrate the MCE-CA-Markov and InVEST models to evaluate the spatiotemporal variations of carbon stocks in mid- to high-latitude alpine watersheds in China under historical and future climate scenarios. Additionally, the study employs the Geographic Detector model to explore the driving mechanisms influencing the carbon storage capacity of watershed ecosystems. The results showed that the carbon stock of the watershed increased by about 15.9 Tg from 1980 to 2020. Fractional Vegetation Cover (FVC), Digital Elevation Model (DEM), and Mean Annual Temperature (MAT) had the strongest explanatory power for carbon stocks. Under different climate scenarios, it was found that the SSP2-4.5 scenario had a significant rise in carbon stock from 2020 to 2050, roughly 24.1 Tg. This increase was primarily observed in the southeastern region of the watersheds, with forest and grassland effectively protected. Conversely, according to the SSP5-8.5 scenario, the carbon stock would decrease by about 50.53 Tg with the expansion of cultivated and construction land in the watershed's southwest part. Therefore, given the vulnerability of mid- to high-latitude mountain watersheds, global warming trends continue to pose a greater threat to carbon sequestration in watersheds. Our findings carry important implications for tackling potential ecological threats in mid- to high-latitude watersheds in the Northern Hemisphere and assisting policymakers in creating carbon sequestration plans, as well as for reducing climate change. Forest development following agricultural abandonment concerns extensive areas including the Massif Central region of France where this study was undertaken. This land-use and land-cover change is expected to have effects on biodiversity and ecosystem services, including an increase of carbon sequestration—a major concern in the face of climate change. Nevertheless, uncertainties about carbon stock changes during successions are remaining, especially as to the total stock and the contribution of the different carbon pools. Our work contributes to this field by studying carbon stocks in multiple plots of different successional stages. We measured and estimated carbon stocks in aboveground and belowground vegetation, deadwood, litter and superficial soil, and surveyed plant communities and plot conditions (slope, aspect, soil characteristics). The average total carbon stock increased along the succession from 70.60 at stage 0 to 314.19 tC ha−1 at stage 5. However, the total carbon stocks at the young forest stage (abandoned for 74 years maximum) and the older forest stage (forested for at least 74 years) were not significantly different, and probably reflected strong local heterogeneity in the older forest stage. An increase of the carbon stock was found in all pools, except the soil pool that did not vary significantly between the successional stages. The aboveground carbon stock was found strongly related to the woody species cover, especially the macrophanerophyte cover. Carbon capture systems and the utilization of renewable energy are key ways to reduce carbon emissions, but their uncertainty seriously affects the stable operation and economic efficiency of power systems. To tackle this challenge, a low-carbon economic scheduling model for microgrid electric-thermal integrated energy systems(IES) considering uncertainties is proposed in this paper. The model suggests an ideal dispatch of the IES system that accounts for the disruption of the carbon capture system's integration into the grid belt and plans for the carbon capture plant's low carbon features. Mechanisms for operating and scheduling systems couple wind energy with carbon capture power plants. These mechanisms also invoke demand response resources on the load side. The system's low carbon performance is increased through cooperative source–load resource optimization. A well-established industrial automation optimal dispatch model is developed using YALMIP and CPLEX. The results show that this method is helpful to solve the problem of system adaptability and seek a balance between low-carbon and economy. Biochar (BC), a carbon‐dense substance created through the pyrolysis of organic biomass, has garnered considerable interest as a promising option for sustainable mitigation methods. A comprehensive examination of the diverse attributes of BC and its implications for addressing contemporary environmental issues while fostering sustainable practices is compiled in this review. The synthesis techniques and structural attributes of BC are scrutinized initially, emphasizing its remarkable features such as broad surface area, porosity, and active sites. These characteristics of BC are conducive to myriad environmental applications, including pollutant remediation, soil health enhancement, and carbon sequestration. Subsequently, this review delves into the mechanisms underlying BC's effectiveness in environmental remediation. BC exhibits augmented adsorption capacities, catalytic functionalities, and interactions with microorganisms, facilitating the removal of contaminants from different matrices of the environment. Recently, BC and their products such as nano‐BC have gained widespread recognition as a feasible option for sustainable carbon material. Fabrication, characterization, modification, and diverse applications of BC were also discussed in detail. Its integration into agriculture holds promise for enhancing soil organic matter, augmenting production, and mitigating gas emissions, thereby contributing to food security and climate change mitigation. In conclusion, BC and nano‐BC emerge as a promising avenue for addressing environmental challenges and advancing sustainable development objectives. However, further research is warranted to optimize synthesis methodologies, elucidate long‐term environmental implications, and facilitate scalable production for widespread adoption. Technologies for capturing and storing carbon dioxide (CO2) and strategies for sequestering carbon dioxide have received a lot of interest in recent years as potential remedies for the curtailment of the growing concerns of emissions of greenhouse gases and global warming. This article provides a comprehensive analysis on the trends in research and development in the area of CO2 carbon capture and sequestration at the moment. The review explores various technological approaches for capturing CO2 from industrial emissions, such as post‐combustion capture systems, pre‐combustion capture systems, and oxy‐fuel combustion system. It also gives a major insight into the post‐combustion capture of carbon by means of a summary, information obtained via a personal interview with a Combustion Based Unit (CBU) plant manager. Additionally, different methods for storing and sequestering the aforementioned gas, including geological and oceanic archiving, and mineralization, are examined. By synthesizing the findings from a wide range of studies and research papers, this literature review provides valuable insights into the current technologies for CO2 capture, storage, and sequestration, contributing to the ongoing efforts in addressing climate change and achieving sustainable development goals. Prairie cropping systems face several challenges, including high input costs and climate change. Research to address these challenges has focused on above-ground agronomic parameters while completely ignoring the role roots play below ground. The objectives of this review study are to (i) synthesize past root studies carried out in the Canadian Prairies, (ii) provide a context for prairie root research, and (iii) identify gaps for future research. This review reports that root architectural traits of major crops have been assessed under field and greenhouse conditions in soil, artificial media, and a mixture of both soil and media, mostly under natural/well-watered and drought conditions. Several root traits have been compared for major crops grown with respect to moisture levels and nutrient uptake. A dearth of research exists on the complex relationship between root traits, soil microbiome, nutrient uptake, carbon sequestration, and photosynthetic efficiency. No studies were found relating root traits, fertilizer placement, and nitrogen and water use efficiencies, carbon sequestration, soil microbiome dynamics, and common root diseases. This review also reports that more research and funding are needed to exploit the benefits that root research will bring to further sustainability goals and ensure food security in the Canadian Prairies. This study contributes to the literature examining public acceptance of carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects in the US. The examination of factors that shape public support for CCS projects provides policymakers with insights to address public concerns, balance CCS development with public sentiments, and make informed decisions about optimal locations and timing. Based on a nationally representative survey on 1850 respondents, the study finds that in the US, there is very low familiarity (6.4%) regarding CCS technology and some limited opposition (11.5%) to increased CCS development. Regression results suggest that support for increased CCS projects in the US is influenced by perceptions of technical and social risks (leakage and community danger, respectively) but not cost of living risks, perceptions of environmental and economic benefits, familiarity with the technology, confidence in government regulations, and a desire for the US to lead in CCS. We fail to find the 'Not-in-My-Backyard' effect, and individuals supporting the development of more CCS in their states also support it at a national level. Understanding these factors helps policymakers anticipate challenges in implementing CCS initiatives and allows for the development of strategies to address concerns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Greenhouse gas emissions and climate change concerns have prompted worldwide initiatives to lower carbon dioxide (CO2) levels and prevent them from rising in the atmosphere, thereby controlling global warming. Effective CO2 management through carbon capture and storage is essential for safe and permanent storage, as well as synchronically meeting carbon reduction targets. Lowering CO2 emissions through carbon utilization can develop a wide range of new businesses for energy security, material production, and sustainability. CO2 mineralization is one of the most promising strategies for producing thermodynamically stable solid calcium or magnesium carbonates for long-term sequestration using simple chemical reactions. Current advancements in CO2 mineralization technologies,focusing on pathways and mechanisms using different industrial solid wastes, including natural minerals as feedstocks, are briefly discussed. However, the operating costs, energy consumption, reaction rates, and material management are major barriers to the application of these technologies in CO2 mineralization. The optimization of operating parameters, tailor-made equipment, and smooth supply of waste feedstocks require more attention to make the carbon mineralization process economically and commercially viable. Here, carbonation mechanisms, technological options to expedite mineral carbonation, environmental impacts, and prospects of CO2 mineralization technologies are critically evaluated to suggest a pathway for mitigating climate change in the future. The integration of industrial wastes and brine with the CO2 mineralization process can unlock its potential for the development of novel chemical pathways for the synthesis of calcium or magnesium carbonates, valuable metal recovery, and contribution to sustainability goals while reducing the impact of global warming. For the marine industry biofouling has a negative reputation. On ship hulls, the accumulation of these unwanted plants and animals can lead to increased drag, fuel consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions. Offshore platforms are also subject to biofouling which can result in corrosion and hydrodynamic loading, thus shortening their lifespan. While the harmful impacts of biofouling are commonly reported throughout the literature, biofouling can also benefit both aquatic and human populations. Common biofouling organisms act as natural filtration systems, thus improving water quality. Many of the same flora and fauna serve as a food source, and structures could be designed to lessen the impacts of fouling on hydrodynamic forces. In addition, microfouling species commonly found in biofilms have the potential to be harnessed as biofuel sources and can be a component of the carbon cycle. The following review discusses the benefits of biofouling and why ecological engineering initiatives may aid in ecosystem restoration versus the use of antifouling techniques for preventative growth. This study aimed to determine the quantity and quality of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) released from sewage sludge-derived biochar and digestion-derived biochar under different extraction conditions (deionised water, hot water, 0.1 mol·L-1 NaOH) using TOC analyser, UV-vis spectroscopy. Biochars were produced through the pyrolysis process at temperatures of 400, 500, 600, and 800 ℃. The objective of this article was to examine the influence of diverse extraction solutions on the amount of dissolved organic carbon (BDOC) released from biochars and to delineate alterations in the composition and characteristics of DOC contingent on the extraction parameters. The findings demonstrated that elevated pyrolysis temperatures resulted in a notable reduction in DOC concentration, with fractions extracted using NaOH exhibiting the highest DOC concentrations. SUVA254 analysis and the E2/E3 ratio indicated that biochars produced at higher temperatures contained a greater proportion of aromatic and hydrophobic substances. These results indicate that pyrolysis temperature, feedstock type and extraction conditions are of significant importance for the properties of DOC in biochar. Voluntary carbon market schemes facilitate funding for projects promoting sustainable land management practices to sequester carbon in natural sinks such as biomass and soil, while also supporting agricultural production. The effectiveness of VCM schemes relies on accurate measurement mechanisms that can directly attribute carbon accumulation to project activities. However, measuring carbon sequestration in soils has proven to be difficult and costly, especially in fragmented smallholdings predominant in global agriculture. The cost and accuracy limitations of current methods to monitor soil organic carbon (SOC) limit the participation of smallholder farmers in global carbon markets, where they could potentially be compensated for adopting sustainable farming practices that provide ecosystem benefits. This study evaluates nine different approaches for SOC accounting in smallholder agricultural projects. The approaches involve the use of proximal and remote sensing, along with process models. Our evaluation centres on stakeholder requirements for the Measurement, Reporting, and Verification system, using the criteria of accuracy, level of standardisation, costs, adoptability, and the advancement of community benefits. By analysing these criteria, we highlight opportunities and challenges associated with each approach, presenting suggestions to enhance their applicability for smallholder SOC accounting. The contextual foundation of the research is a case study on the Western Kenya Soil Carbon Project. Remote sensing shows promise in reducing costs for direct and modelling-based carbon measurement. While it is already being used in certain carbon market applications, transparency is vital for broader integration. This demands collaborative work and investment in infrastructure like spectral libraries and user-friendly tools. Balancing community benefits against the detached nature of remote techniques is essential. Enhancing information access aids farmers, boosting income through improved soil and crop productivity, even with remote monitoring. In this study, Chlorella and Scenedesmus were inoculated in biogas slurry medium with initial inoculum (OD680) of 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3, respectively, and 5% CO2 was continuously injected. The study aimed to examine the carbon sequestration capacity of Chlorella and Scenedesmus, as well as the effectiveness of removing pollutants such as TN, TP, and COD in biogas slurry medium. Additionally, an economic efficiency analysis of energy consumption was conducted. The group with an initial inoculum (OD680) of 0.3 for both types of microalgae exhibited better tolerance to pollutants, entered the logarithmic growth stage earlier, promoted nutrient removal, achieved higher energy efficiency, and reduced carbon emissions compared to the other groups. The highest carbon sequestration rates were 18.03% for Chlorella and 11.05% for Scenedesmus. Furthermore, Chlorella demonstrated corresponding nutrient removal efficiencies of 83.03% for TN, 99.84% for TP, and 90.06% for COD, while Scenedesmus exhibited removal efficiencies of 66.35% for TN, 98.74% for TP, and 77.71% for COD. The highest energy efficiency for pollutants and CO2 removal rates for Chlorella were 49.51 ± 2.20 and 9.91 ± 0.44 USD−1, respectively. We use a panel smooth transition regression model to investigate the influence of Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) rental rates on land enrollment under different crop price regimes. We employ a flexible estimation technique, allowing the CRP rental rate incentives to vary with crop prices, and construct a Hausman‐type instrumental variable to address endogeneity. Simulations are conducted to assess the impact of varying crop prices on CRP acreage and its associated environmental effects. Results reveal a nonlinear relationship between rental rates and enrollment, with the impact diminishing as crop prices increase. A 10% rise in CRP rental rates corresponds to a 5.1% expansion in enrollment, reducing to 4.2% when crop prices reach a specific threshold. High crop prices lead to fewer acres enrolled, decreased carbon sequestration, increased phosphorus and nitrogen runoff, and increased sediment loss. Our findings highlight the importance of considering price fluctuations in conservation planning as it has significant implications for environmental conservation policies and programs. This paper analyzed farmers' willingness to accept (WTA) payment and uncertainties toward carbon market through a 2021 U.S. Midwest farmer survey. The findings showed that farmer carbon supply was elastic at intermediate prices ($20–50/Mg), but inelastic at low ($10–20/Mg) and high ($50–70/Mg) price levels. While perceived co‐benefits play significant roles in promoting participation at low‐price levels, variables such as age, education, farm size, and soil quality are more likely to influence producers' choices at intermediate‐ and high‐price levels. The second‐law analysis evaluates the irreversibilities of a process. Systematic study of the relationship between thermodynamic efficiency and process modifications enhances process synthesis. The Allam cycle is an oxy‐fuel combustion cycle with nearly complete carbon capture that offers greater efficiency than current electricity generating systems. This study applies lost work analysis to the original Allam cycle and three modifications to obtain the distribution of irreversibilities and the effects of different configurations among potential process improvements for more sustainable power generation. The major inefficiencies are from the combustors and heat exchangers. We also examine the economic profitability of the alternatives. The largest equipment costs are for the turbines, compressors, and recuperators. We find that improving efficiency leads to less economic return; a configuration with partial compression has the highest efficiency, while the original Allam cycle has the highest profitability. Direct air capture (DAC) is a promising technology for decarbonization through the removal of CO2 from the atmosphere. In many DAC processes, the regeneration energy used to restore the capture capacity of sorbents accounts for a significant fraction of the energy required by the whole process. Here we report an effective and scalable sorbent regeneration method for liquid DAC solvents based on magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) heating with AC magnetic fields. MNPs can be directly heated to provide uniform and rapid volumetric heating, as we demonstrate by promoting the release of captured CO2 from an aqueous solution of potassium sarcosinate. Our results showed that 90% of the solvent can be regenerated within 7.5 min of heating through proposed technique. The MNPs and solvent are found to be stable during the regeneration process and the MNPs showed long‐term stability in the CO2‐saturated solvent. Cyclic experiments showed that the nanoparticles can be reused for multiple cycles without performance deterioration. The process is operated in a noncontact mode through electromagnetic waves, making it an adoptable approach for existing carbon capture systems. Direct air capture (DAC) is a negative emission technology for removing CO2 from the atmosphere to maintain the CO2 level within a reasonable range so as to address greenhouse effects. In this study, the operational optimization of lab‐scale DAC has been investigated using a crossflow air‐liquid contactor loaded with a three dimensionally printed Gyroid packing structure and a potassium sarcosinate solvent. The effects of various parameters, including feed air flow rate, liquid solvent flow rate, contactor geometry, and ambient temperature, are examined. The results demonstrate that the Gyroid packing design achieves comparable CO2 capture performance to conventional packed beds but with a significantly lower pressure drop of up to 77.8%, suggesting its potential as an efficient and cost‐effective solution for gas–liquid contactors in DAC. Additionally, the study explores the climate impact on CO2 capture performance and finds that as the air temperature increases from 35 to 95°F at a fixed relative humidity of 80%, the CO2 capture rate increased from 23.2% to 46.8% with better stability. The research highlights the importance of optimizing contactor design and operational conditions to improve the CO2 capture rate and feasibility of DAC systems as a negative emission technology for addressing greenhouse effects. Ionic liquid (IL) can not only serve as solvents to reduce carbon capture energy consumption, but also may activate the CO2 absorption of amine solutions. Here, the absorption mechanism and kinetic modeling of IL‐activated single and mixed amines were studied in wetted wall column. N‐(2‐aminoethyl) ethanolamine (AEEA) and N,N‐diethylethanolamine (DEEA) were used as representatives to evaluate the IL activation effects on primary and tertiary amines. It was found that IL activated the reaction process of primary amine, but had no activation effect on tertiary amine. The activation energy of AEEA‐IL‐CO2 was 22.2 kJ/mol, which was 21.0% lower than AEEA‐CO2. Kinetic modeling of IL‐activated AEEA and mixed amines was established. Besides, the density functional theory calculations showed that IL can form hydrogen bonding and other interactions with AEEA and CO2 to activate the absorption reaction, which can reduce 29.3% activation energy during the zwitterion formation stage. Carbon sequestration in terrestrial vegetation can't be underestimated in terms of offsetting CO2 emissions from energy consumption. However, it is not clear to what extent terrestrial vegetation can offset energy-related CO2 emissions, and how effective it is to achieve regional carbon neutrality through vegetation carbon sinks. To clarify the offsetting effect of vegetation carbon sink on energy carbon emissions and support the promotion of achieving the goal of carbon neutrality, we selected the Yangtze River basin (YRB) as the research area, and explored the spatial distribution and service coverage of vegetation-energy carbon balance (VECB) in the basin at the grid scale. We also analyzed the ability of vegetation to maintain carbon balance within the basin, and estimated spatial distribution of energy carbon emissions by using nighttime light images and panel data model. Spatial distribution of vegetation carbon sequestration was calculated by using net primary productivity (NPP) and the Intelligent Urban Ecosystem Management System (IUEMS). Finally, the ability of vegetation to maintain carbon balance was quantified by introducing gas diffusion coefficient. Results showed that, on the whole, energy carbon emissions in YRB are distributed along the main Yangtze River and its main tributaries. Vegetation carbon sink in YRB mainly circulates around the Sichuan Basin and aggregates in the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. From 2000 to 2019, VECB in 58% of the basin increased. In 85% of the basin, CO2 generated by energy consumption can be completely offset by vegetation carbon sinks alone. In 2000, 2010 and 2019, the average offset ratio of vegetation to energy carbon emissions in the carbon imbalance region was 51.8%, 40.5% and 39.7%, respectively. The ability of vegetation to maintain carbon balance in YRB decreased gradually from 2000 to 2019. Ecosystem‐scale photosynthetic efficiency (EPE) is proposed as an effective indicator to quantify gross primary productivity (GPP), but how the coupling between EPE and GPP varies as vegetation resilience decreases has not been evaluated. Here, we quantified forest resilience with optimized Bayesian models. With the use of multisource satellite and modeling data, our study revealed that forests on the Loess Plateau and in the Qinba Mountains in China are experiencing rapid resilience loss and are already facing mortality warnings after 2010. Reductions in resilience also drove the marked decoupling of GPP from EPE. Notably, the decline in resilience was accompanied by a decrease in EPE in about 74% of the forests while GPP increased. The mechanism underlying this decoupling could be attributed to enhanced atmospheric water demand and soil water constraints. The dynamic relationships found here could help to improve forest mortality models and enhance photosynthesis‐based GPP evaluation. Low‐resilience forests may be unable to absorb changes and achieve system variable stabilization under perturbations in external drivers and may undergo irreversible system shifts. Carbon storage technology is primarily targeted in saline formations, which is a porous rock matrix filled with brine, sealed with a low permeability caprock. There are significant variations of CO2 wetting properties, typically reported in the literature as contact angle of CO2 and brine interacting with a rock material, suggesting that CO2 could become wetting under geostorage conditions and negatively impact containment effectiveness. Here, we performed the first controlled laboratory measurements of CO2‐brine contact angles on shale rocks from low permeability sealing formations with distinctive mineralogic properties—calcite‐rich, quartz‐rich, and dolomite‐rich. We targeted temperatures at 40° and 100°C, pressures at 8.3, 34.5, and 62.1 MPa, and salinity at 35,000 and 260,000 ppm. Results show no significant change in contact angle with mineralogy, temperature, pressure, salinity, and CO2 bubble size. We conclude that caprocks will remain water‐wet at geologic CO2 storage conditions and will not lose their capillary sealing capacity. Seagrasses are considered to be globally important for carbon sequestration and they provide a range of ecosystem services. However, they are also known to be vulnerable to various anthropogenic activities, not least bottom contacting fishing gears such as dredging and potting. We set out to test the effects of dredge fishing, in early spring and potting in late summer, in a historically fished but considered “pristine” seagrass meadow on the west coast of Ireland. We found that despite dredging and potting pressures, growth of seagrasses was driven by seasonal changes in light and temperature and that neither fishing activity had any effect on rhizome weight or shoot or blade densities during the growing season. We hypothesize that it is possible for fishing to co‐occur with seagrass if fishing activities are restricted to winter or early spring, before the main seagrass growing season, and/or if particular types of gear, such as the traditional gears described here are used. High levels of dredging and potting had positive increases in the count of both sessile and mobile epifauna suggesting that for mobile species at least, they may take advantage of post‐fishing scavenging opportunities. Cement industry, due to the decomposition of CaCO 3 and the production of clinker, emits large amounts of CO 2 into the atmosphere. This anthropogenic gas can be captured and through its synthesis with green hydrogen, methanol and finally synthetic fuels are achieved. By using e-fuel, Europe's climate neutrality objectives could be achieved. However, the energy transition still lacks a clear roadmap, and decisions are strongly affected by the geopolitical situation, the energy demand and the economy. Therefore, different scenarios are analysed to assess the influence of key factors on the overall economic viability of the process: 1) A business-as-usual scenario, EU perspectives 2) allowing e-fuels and 3) improving H 2 production processes. The technical feasibility of the production of synthetic fuels is verified. The most optimistic projections indicate future production costs of synthetic fuels will be lower than those of fossil fuels. This is directly related to the cost of green hydrogen production. The urgency of addressing climate change, energy security, and ecological concerns has driven the global shift towards renewable energy systems. In this transformative era, green hydrogen emerges as a pivotal energy resource, promising substantial reductions in global emissions. Methods like water electrolysis, biomass gasification, and methane reforming with carbon capture and storage offer pathways to synthesize hydrogen without greenhouse gas emissions. Limiting global warming to 1.5-2 °C requires a 50-90% reduction in CO2 emissions in 2050, depending on different scenarios, and carbon capture, utilization, and storage is a promising technology that can help reach this objective. Calcium oxide (CaO) carbon capture is an appealing choice because of its affordability, large potential capacity, and ability to withstand the high temperatures of flue gases. However, the structural instability and capacity fading challenge its large-scale industrial applications. Here, we design a reversible reaction shuttle in CaO-based sorbents to improve the structure stability by changing the initial alumina phases. Diverse alumina phases (x-Al2O3) are first synthesized and utilized as the aluminum source for creating CaO@x-Al2O3 composites. As expected, the CaO@δ-Al2O3 composite demonstrates a carbon capture capacity of 0.43 g-CO2/g-sorbent after 50 cycles, with an impressive capacity retention of 82.7%. Combined characterizations and calculations reveal that this stability improvement is attributed to a transition shuttle between Ca3Al2O6 and Ca5Al6O14, which can effectively restrain the complete decompositions of those structure-stabilized intermediate phases. An economic assessment further identifies the significance of heat transfer efficiency improvement upon cycles, and control of capital/operation cost, energy price and carbon tax for a future cost-effective commercialization of current strategy. Distinct alumina phases lead to various intermediate phases in the CaO@x-Al2O3 composites. Energy system optimization is needed for optimal sustainable net-zero electricity (NZE) mix even at regional/local scales because of the energy storage needs for addressing the intermittency of renewable energy supply. This study presents a novel regional/local energy planning model for optimum sustainable NZE mix under spatiotemporal climate/meteorological and electrical load demand constraints. A generic robust non-linear constrained mathematical programming (NLP) algorithm has been developed for energy system optimization; it minimizes the levelized cost and greenhouse gas emissions while maximizing reliability against stored energy discharge analysis (RADA). Reliability, defined as the ratio of excess stored renewable power discharge to unmet load demand, is a measure of the extent of unmet load demand met by the excess stored renewable power. Coupled with the NLP, the RADA and energy storage evaluations are used to determine the seasonal energy storage (SES) conditions and realistic renewable proportions for NZE. The significance of the proposed framework lies in determining the maximum hours of viable electrical energy storage beyond which the reliability enhancement is infinitesimal. The significant observations of this work include 96 h of maximum viable electrical energy storage beyond which the reliability enhancement is infinitesimal. While this observation is robust based on previous reports for the case of the United States, a realistic NZE mix for Southern United Kingdom is obtained as follows. Direct wind and solar sources can meet 63%, 62%, and 55% of the electricity demands in the southwest, Greater London, and southeast regions of the United Kingdom, respectively; further, battery energy storage systems can increase the renewable proportions by 21%, 22%, and 13% in these three regions. The unmet demands can be met by renewable electricity through SES. Compressed air energy storage (CAES) and pumped hydro storage offer viable SES. Following these, natural gas with carbon capture and storage (CCS), bioenergy, and hydrogen SES are the choices based on increasing cost per lifecycle climate impact potential to meet the electricity demands. Designing low‐cost and stable electrocatalysts with enhanced activity and selectivity for CO2 valorization to useful chemicals and fuels faces enormous challenges to address the pressing climate change concerns. Synergistic interactions between the atoms in double atom catalysts has emerged as a promising tool to tune and boost CO2 activation and reduction. In this work, we systematically designed highly stable transition‐metal‐free homo‐ and hetero‐biatomic catalysts based on Al, Be, B and Si supported on TCNQ monolayer for CO2 reduction to C1 products using dispersion corrected periodic density functional theory calculations. Our findings reveal that transition‐metal‐free homo‐and hetero‐biatomic TCNQ catalysts can effectively capture and activate the CO2 molecule with binding energies ranging from 0.09 to 2.35 eV. Extensive free energy calculations to screen the favourable reaction pathways to different C1 products (CO, HCOOH, CH3OH and CH4) demonstrate that Al2‐TCNQ, AlBe‐TCNQ and BeSi‐TCNQ stand out as potential candidates for catalyzing CO2RR to methanol in a selective manner, suppressing the competitive HER simultaneously. Remarkably, BeSi‐TCNQ shows the best catalytic activity towards CO2 reduction to methanol at record low limiting potential of −0.29 V with spontaneous desorption of the final product. From the in‐depth examination of the electronic structure details, integrated projected density of states and crystal orbital Hamilton populations are used to understand and rationalize the binding interactions between the adsorbed CO2 molecule and the homo‐ or hetero‐biatomic TCNQ catalysts. Moreover, the ΔG*COOH‐ΔG*CO2 and ΔG*HCOOH‐ΔG* OCHO/*COOH values are found to provide reasonable guidance to evaluate the overall CO2RR performance of homo‐ and hetero‐biatomic TCNQ catalysts, respectively. Therefore, our findings provide significant insights for designing transition metal‐free homo‐ and hetero‐biatomic catalysts with intriguing properties for improving CO2 utilization and conversion. Carbon sequestration in agricultural soils is crucial in mitigating the adverse effects of global climate change and enhancing soil fertility. Among various crops, tea plantations show significant promise in adopting carbon sequestration practices. Consequently, the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu was purposefully selected for the study, involving 120 tea growers chosen using the snowball sampling method. A theoretical framework was developed to assess the factors influencing tea grower’s adoption of carbon sequestration practices. Partial least squares-structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) was employed to analyse the gathered data. The results demonstrated that factors such as ‘knowledge’, ‘attitude’, ‘innovativeness’, ‘perceived benefits’ and ‘perceived need’ had a significant and positive influence on tea grower’s adoption of carbon sequestration practices. In contrast, ‘social influence’ had no significant effect, underscoring the importance of increasing awareness, providing financial incentives, establishing pricing structures, and implementing government policies related to soil carbon sequestration. Enhanced weathering of terrestrial rock material is a promising method for the removal of anthropogenic CO2 emissions from the atmosphere. Herein, we demonstrate that an ameliorated mining waste product can be effectively weathered in the soil environment when used as a soil amendment in conjunction with the cultivation of fast-growing willows (Salix matsudana Koidz. χ S. alba L. "Austree") in a pot study environment. Utilizing this locally sourced amendment minimizes emissions associated with grinding and transportation of enhanced weathering materials. Results showed that the willows were able to tolerate the relatively high metal concentrations of this amendment and sequester inorganic carbon (C) through the production of bicarbonate in soil solution. During the period of peak plant growth (10 weeks after planting), alkalinity measurements of soil solution from pots with willows and the addition of 25% by mass mine waste product indicated an additional 10 mg of inorganic C sequestration per liter of leached soil solution compared to unamended soils with willows. This represents 4.5 times the inorganic C sequestration rate of unamended soils. The addition of ameliorated mining waste also increased the pH of the soil solution by up to two units (pH of 6 in control vs. pH of 8 with the addition of 25% by mass mineral amendment). In addition to inorganic C sequestration, weathering of the ameliorated mining waste product may also provide base cations (such as calcium and magnesium) which could improve soil fertility. These results are encouraging for future investigation of ameliorated mine waste rock to sequester carbon and enhance the production of willows grown for ecosystem services and phytotechnologies. A strategy of tuning azole‐based ionic liquids for reversible CO2 capture from ambient air was reported. Through tuning the basicity of anion as well as the type of cation, an ideal azole‐based ionic liquid with both high CO2 capacity and excellent stability was synthesized, which exhibited a highest single‐component isotherm uptake of 2.17 mmol/g at the atmospheric CO2 concentration of 0.4 mbar at 30 °C, even in the presence of water. The bound CO2 can be released by relatively mild heating of the IL‐CO2 at 80 °C, which makes it promising for energy‐efficient CO2 desorption and sorbent regeneration, leading to excellent reversibility. To the best of our knowledge, these azole‐based ionic liquids are superior to other adsorbent materials for direct air capture due to their dual‐tunable properties and high CO2 capture efficiency, offering a new prospect for efficient and reversible direct air capture technologies.
