This annotated bibliography dealing with Canadian children's books aims to show the historical development of the literature. Included within the bibliography are: (1) notable Canadian books from the eighteenth century to the modern period, (2) lists of books which were awarded a bronze medal for the years 1947-1975, and (3) a list of fiction for the young French Canadian. Although historically Canadian children's literature has been sparse, the notable improvement of late in the quality of writing, illustration, and overall design and production is encouraging. Introductory materials are in both French and English; parts 1 and 2 of the bibliography are in English, and part 3 is in French. (AP)

The guide contains over 250 source materials about Canada in the reference department of McLennan Library at McGill University. Many of the sources mentioned are basic to all Canadian studies; therefore, the guide replaces an earlier one (ED 130 965) on "Canadiana" published by McLennan Library in 1974. The first six sections list encyclopedias, handbooks, chronologies, almanacs, annual reviews, and statistical sources about Canada. Section seven, which comprises the main body of the guide, presents bibliographies. These are grouped into six categories: general and historical bibliographies about Canada; regional bibliographies about specific provinces; topical bibliographies including foreign affairs, industry, and ethnic groups; theses and research; newspaper bibliographies; and bibliographies of periodicals. Section eight briefly lists periodical titles on Canadian history, regional history, and related subjects. Each entry gives information on title, publisher and date, McLennan Library catalog and shelf numbers, and a short description of each book's content. This bibliography provides a list of sources for students, scholars, and librarians who want information about theses completed or in preparation at Canadian universities. The sources are presented under three headings: general bibliographies, theses lists by university, and specialized bibliographies. For monographic items, the author, title, and publishing information are recorded; for serial literature, the listing provides the title of the article, the periodical title, and the volume, number, and date. This bibiography of reference sources for French-Canadian children's books includes bibliographies, indexes, a publishers' trade annual, recommended lists, and features in professional journals. The citations are presented alphabetically by title--in English, in French and English, or in French, depending on their source--and an address where it may be obtained is provided for each; cost is indicated for serials. French and English annotations for each of the 41 Canadian children's books that involve animals are provided in this bibliography; books listed are in English or French, with some bilingual items, including one in English and Ojibwa. Bibliographic information for each title includes author's name, illustrator's name (if illustrated), photographer's name (if includes photographs), imprint, and pagination. An index to the books is also given, containing the names of authors, illustrators, photographers, titles in both languages, and awards received. The approximately 250 entries in this bibliography deal with the topic of women and literature and were drawn from a search of current periodicals and of recent books catalogued by the Library of Congress. The cited materials deal with women authors, with topics of interest to feminist scholars of literature, or with problems and issues in feminist criticism. Not all of the cited materials reflect a feminist perspective. A list of recent audiovisual materials catalogued by the Library of Congress is also included. (TJ)

Grade levels, particular suitability, and prices are indicated for each item, and some audiovisual items are listed in the appropriate subject categories as well as books. An annotated bibliography of fiction about Canada or written by Canadian authors is presented. The list is intended as a guide for Canadian young adult readers in search of a literature they can identify as their own. Evaluative annotations of recent additions to the National Library of Canada's selection of notable Canadian children's literature are presented in two separate supplements, one English, the other French, with translations of the principal text in each version to the language of the other. The English supplement adds seven titles for 1976 and 13 for 1977; while the French supplement adds 15 titles for 1976 and seven for 1977. The annotations provide an evaluative review of each book's contents and describe awards won by the work. Content of the books includes history, poetry, adventure, pictorial essay, nature study, sports, legend, and short stories. The index provides access to the names of all individuals associated with the creation of each work, to the titles, to awards, and to the principal subjects and themes identified in the titles and annotations. An English committee read and evaluated 85 children's books and chose ten of them for the 1975 list of notable English-Canadian children's books. All forms of fiction and non-fiction were considered, and selection criteria included evaluation of the theme, setting, plot, characters, style, illustrations, and factual information. Entries are arranged in order by author, followed by title, illustrator, pagination, imprint, date of publication, and abstract. An index provides access to all names of individuals with a creative responsibility for each work listed, to the title of each work, and to any awards which the work may have received. (Author/JPF)

This revised and updated bibliography of multicultural publications supported by the Canadian government includes annotations in both French and English. Historical, literary, ethnographic, linguistic, and research documents and teaching guides representing or targeted to a variety of different ethnic groups are presented. Each entry contains bibliographic information, a Dewey Decimal call number, indications of intended educational level and purchase priority, a price (in Canadian dollars), and a brief review of the work with the source of the review given. A study was conducted to identify the major areas of investigation in recent Canadian adult education literature. During the study, questionnaires were distributed to 216 adult educators located at 32 postsecondary educational institutions throughout Canada. Materials including 556 articles, books, reports, and proceedings papers were identified. The adult learner was the focus of most of the papers, as evidenced by their titles; other approaches that received frequent attention in the literature examined were teaching methods and conditions for learning. Examination of the relative percentages of publications on various topics revealed that 32 percent of books and proceedings published dealt with adult education in general, 23 percent were concerned with continuing and extension education, 14 percent dealt with education, and 6 percent dealt with counseling and psychology. Other topics included higher education, vocational education, community development, distance education, and literacy and adult basic education. (Appended to this study are a brief thesaurus of adult education synonyms, a list of Canadian adult education authors, and a list of postsecondary sponsors of adult education. Compiled to help teachers and teacher-librarians select children's books for kindergarten through eighth grade, this bibliography consists of fiction books of good literary quality published since 1976, of which half are Canadian. The bibliography's content is organized so as to identify each of the 89 books in five different ways: author, organizational pattern, literary elements, theme, and title. The first and major section is an annotated list of books in alphabetical order by author's surname. This is followed by a brief descriptive annotation under which is listed the book's organizational pattern, main literary element, theme, and intended age range. The second section, which lists the books according to the organizational pattern dominant in each book, has six headings or pattern classifications, arranged in alphabetical order by author/title. The third section, also arrranged alphabetically, identifies six literary elements: setting, character development, plot, mood, figure of speech, and point of view, while the fourth section, using the same format, categorizes the book according to the following thematic elements: anxiety/depression, attitude, change, cooperation, curiosity, death, determination/resourcefulness, disabilities, family relations, friendships, imagination/fantasy formation, maturation, responsibility, rhymes/nonsense stories, survival, and values/valuing.
