We report a case of a bilateral Krukenberg tumour of the ovaries arising from a primary adenocarcinoma of the duodenojejunal flexure. Adenocarcinoma of the small bowel is uncommon, representing 1% of all primary malignant tumours of the gastrointestinal tract [1]. Krukenberg tumours arising from a primary duodenojejunal adenocarcinoma are even more unusual. To our knowledge there are less than five reported cases in the English literature [2,3]. Mazur et al. reviewing 325 cases of metastases to the female genital tract over 31 years, found only one case of ovarian metastasis from a primary small bowel carcinoma [2]. Most small bowel adenocarcinomas tend to metastasize to regional lymph nodes and the liver.

We present data on 3652 analyzed events of the reaction π - p → φφn at 22 GeV/ c . A partial wave analysis has been performed on the φφ system. The results are well represented by three resonances all with quantum numbers I G J PC = 0 + 2 ++ . The absence of the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka suppression observed in this reaction, the selection of only three J PC =2 ++ states ( g T , g T′ , and g T ″ ) which comprise virtually all of the cross section, and the large φφn signal over a very different φK + K - n background are all well explained if these states are produced by 1–3 glueballs (i.e. multigluon resonances).

In a new experiment we have obtained 3006 new events in the reaction π − p → φφ n, approximately doubling the statistics which now total 6658. A refined partial wave analysis of the φφ system again reveals three resonances (g T , g T′ , g T′' ) with I G J PC =0 + 2 ++ . The absence of the OZI suppression, and the observation of only three J PC =2 ++ states (g T , g T′ , g T′' ) which comprise virtually all the cross section are unusual characteristics of the data. The large φφn signal occurs over a mostly structureless and incoherent φK + K − n background. All these unusual characteristics are well explained if these states are produced by 1–3 glueballs (multigluon resonances).

The collision of 15 GeV/nucleon sulfur and carbon or oxygen ions with various fixed targets such as carbon, sulfur, and gold is to be observed in the MPS magnetic spectrometer with a time projection chamber (TPC) module. This TPC will be placed just downstream of the target and be able to track approximately 50% of all charged particles. The design and construction of the TPC is proceeding, and prototypes of the TPC readout system have been tested and production devices are to be delivered. A TPC track reconstruction program has been developed. Monte Carlo events have been generated and tracked. The track reconstruction program consists of three parts: a local pattern recognition which associates contiguous readouts on adjacent readout wires to form a single hit; a subroutine which positions the hits into slices in the vertical plane; and the track reconstruction section. A theory has been developed to predict the fracture stress of single edge notched poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) tensile specimens from crack propagation data. Good agreement has been found between measured values of fracture stress and the fracture stresses predicted using the theory. It appears therefore that in notched PMMA specimens, the fracture stress is controlled principally by propagation.

A description is given of a TPC system that operates in a relativistic heavy-ion beam and yields good track reconstruction efficiency in very-high-multiplicity events. The mechanical construction of the chamber is discussed. A set of custom hybrid circuits are used to build a very compact, cost-effective electronics system mounted directly on the chamber. Results from running in test beams and from preliminary experimental runs are given.

A description of the software for a FASTBUS based data-acquisition system in use at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Multiparticle Spectrometer is presented. Data reading and formatting is done by the SLAC scanner processors (SSP's) resident in the FASTBUS system. A multiprocess software system on VAX computers is used to communicate with the SSP's, record the data, and monitor on-line the progress of high energy and heavy ion experiments. The structure and the performance of this system are discussed.

Racial discrimination in the housing market has been a topic of research for at least three decades. The present study extends this line of research by exploring how a newly considered factor, anticipated discrimination in the home lending market, differs by race and affects the probability of owning a home. Using data from a sample of households in Memphis, Tennessee, we show that significant differences in anticipated discrimination by race exist and that, certeris paribus, these expectations help to explain racial differences in home ownership. Combining our results with the findings of two homeownership preference studies, the implication is that anticipated discrimination reduces the demand for homes by creating a situation where blacks are less likely to apply for home loans because they feel that credit will be denied.

An effective plasma temperature model appropriate to sunspot maximum conditions has been constructed for low latitudes taking into consideration previously reported incoherent backscatter and satellite probe measurements of electron and ion temperatures. Using this temperature model and electron density latitude profiles, obtained from an analysis of ISIS A topside ionograms (see Walker and Chan , 1976), the variations of mean ion mass at heights of 800, 900 and 1000 km over a range of dip latitude 30°S to 20°N have been estimated during the daytime (1100–1600 LST, long. 105°E) for the period November 1969–January 1970. The results show 1. (1) that there has been a general increase in mean ion mass with increase in solar activity, 2. (2) a latitude crest of ion mass peaking near the magnetic equator to a value ~16 a.m.u., indicating a predominance of O+ ions at a height of 800 km and 3. (3) that the mean ion mass estimates (and consequently O+ ion concentrations) were consistently higher in the summer hemisphere compared with those of similar dip locations in the winter hemisphere. The predominance of O+ ions over the magnetic equator is clearly related to the (E × B) upthrust mechanism at this location giving rise to the ‘equatorial anomaly’ in the ionosphere while the predominance of O+ ions in the summer hemisphere can be explained by a meridional wind blowing from the summer to the winter hemisphere.

The principal detector for AGS Experiment 810 is a Time Projection Chamber (TPC) in which it is intended to measure momenta and angles of a major fraction of the charged particles from each light ion collision. This report describes the results of a test of a prototype of the TPC in a beam of (14.6 × 16 = 233.6 GeV c ) oxygen ions run in June of this year.

From an analysis of topside ionograms taken during November 1969–January 1970 in the South East Asian sector (long. 105°E) the equatorial anomaly has been observed to appear by 1000 LT, reach maximum development by 1500 LT and the subsequent decay became arrested by 1700 LT. Around 1900 LT an enhancement, particularly of the southern hemisphere crest became apparent. Throughout the day an asymmetry existed of greater electron density (about 8% greater) at the southern crest and the position of this occurred at a greater magnetic dip location (about 8° dip greater) than that of the northern crest. It has been inferred that during the period under investigation there was a south— north wind, originating from a relatively high latitude thermal pressure bulge, blowing with a speed of about 40 ms−1 across the magnetic equator and acting together with a vertical upward wind of speed about 12 ms−1 at the magnetic equator. Corresponding to an increase of solar activity from R z = 30 to R z = 100 it appears that electron densities for all heights at 30°S dip increased by a factor 2.2 while over the magnetic equator the increases were greater, the corresponding factors being 2.6 at a height of 500 km and 3.0 at a height of 1000 km. The main effect of the increase of solar activity from sunspot minimum to maximum has been to produce an increase of the vertical upthrust of ionization above the magnetic equator, with probably little change in the meridional wind speed near the time of maximum development of the equatorial anomaly.

A TPC (time projection chamber) detector system has been developed to function in the very-high-multiplicity environment of relativistic-heavy-ion experiments. A TPC was chosen because it directly gives three-dimensional points on the tracks, which is a very significant help for track-finding. Of prime importance is a combination of high efficiency, low noise, and two track resolution capability. A significant development is a system of hybridized, high-sensitivity, on-chamber digitizing electronics. A description of the TPC modules, the digitizing electronics, and test results is given. >

The authors have detected 1203 events of the reaction ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\phi}\ensuremath{\phi}n$ at 22 GeV/c, and have performed a partial-wave analysis of the $\ensuremath{\phi}\ensuremath{\phi}$ system. The results are well represented by two resonances, both with quantum numbers ${I}^{G}={0}^{+}$, ${J}^{\mathrm{PC}}={2}^{++}$. The breakdown of the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka suppression observed in this reaction is naturally explained in the context of QCD if these states are considered to be glueball candidates.

SUMMARY A 51–year-old female patient reacted in a hypersensitive manner to intravenous iodipamide (Biligrafin), alcuronium and ampicillin, although there was no history of previous exposure to any of these drugs. It appears that some individuals are more prone to development of anaphylactic reactions than others. It is suggested that if a patient gives a history of reaction to a drug, means and drugs for resuscitation must be fully prepared in advance before any future drug therapy is to begin, so that prompt treatment may be possible, thus averting a dangerous outcome.

In this paper we discuss the striking evidence for the gT(2010), gT’(2300) and gT (2340) IGJpC=0+2++ resonance which comprise virtually all of the π−p→φφη. The complete breakdown of the expected OZI suppression, and the striking differences of these states from conventional states and background in other channels has so far only been successfully explained by assuming they are produced by 1‐3 2++ glueballs. The comparison with J/ψ radiative decay results is made. The forthcoming search for an exotic JPC glueball is discussed.

We have developed and successfully tested a TPC Magnetic Spectrometer to search for QGP signals produced by ion beams at AGS. We also developed a cascade and plasma event generator the predictions of which are used to illustrate how our technique can detect possible plasma signals.

Twenty patients with established post-traumatic sympathetic dystrophy were treated with elcctro acupuncture after physical therapy with or without oral medication had failed to produce satisfactory relief of symptoms. Of these patients 14(70%) experienced marked and permanent improvement. No complications were encountered. The possible mechanisms involved arc discussed.

A very high event rate Data Acquisition System is described. This DAS is planned for NA36, an SPS heavy ion experiment at CERN that uses calorimetry, wire chambers and a TPC to look for strangeness production enhancement as a signature of the quark-gluon plasma. Because of the high multiplicity final states and the fact that such states have never been seen, real time event selection is impractical and the DAS must record unusual amounts of data. The purpose is to organize and record 1000 events of 20 K byte average size during the 2 sec beam spill and to archive these events during the 10 seconds between spills. Full scale system testing is scheduled for June 1986, so considerable use of FASTBUS modules, developed at other institutions, is made in this design. The overall system block diagram is shown in Fig. 1.
