Abstract

A Compton polarimeter has been installed in Hall A at Jefferson Laboratory. This letter reports on the first electron beam polarization measurements performed during the HAPPEX experiment at an electron energy of 3.3 GeV and an average current of 40 $\mu$A. The heart of this device is a Fabry-Perot cavity which increased the luminosity for Compton scattering in the interaction region so much that a 1.4% statistical accuracy could be obtained within one hour, with a 3.3% total error.

Abstract

The ratio of the electric and magnetic form factors of the proton G(E(p))/G(M(p)), which is an image of its charge and magnetization distributions, was measured at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) using the recoil polarization technique. The ratio of the form factors is directly proportional to the ratio of the transverse to longitudinal components of the polarization of the recoil proton in the elastic e(--)p---e(--)p reaction. The new data presented span the range 3.5Q(2)5.6 GeV(2) and are well described by a linear Q(2) fit. Also, the ratio sqrt[Q(2)] F(2(p))/F(1(p)) reaches a constant value above Q(2) = 2 GeV(2).

Abstract

The first $(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{e}{,e}^{\ensuremath{'}}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p})$ polarization transfer measurements on a nucleus heavier than deuterium have been carried out at Jefferson Laboratory. Transverse and longitudinal components of the polarization of protons ejected in the reaction ${}^{16}\mathrm{O}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{e}{,e}^{\ensuremath{'}}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p})$ were measured in quasielastic perpendicular kinematics at a ${Q}^{2}$ of 0.8 $(\mathrm{GeV}{/c)}^{2}.$ The data are in good agreement with state of the art calculations.

Abstract

We measured the cross section and response functions for the quasielastic 16O(e,e'p) reaction for missing energies 25or =E(m)or =120 MeV at missing momenta P(m)or =340 MeV/c. For 25E(m)50 MeV and P(m) approximately 60 MeV/c, the reaction is dominated by a single 1s(1/2) proton knockout. At larger P(m), the single-particle aspects are increasingly masked by more complicated processes. Calculations which include pion exchange currents, isobar currents, and short-range correlations account for the shape and the transversity, but for only half of the magnitude of the measured cross section.

Abstract

We present a next-to-leading order QCD analysis of the presently available data on the spin structure function [Formula Presented] including the final data from the Spin Muon Collaboration. We present results for the first moments of the proton, deuteron, and neutron structure functions, and determine singlet and nonsinglet parton distributions in two factorization schemes. We also test the Bjorken sum rule and find agreement with the theoretical prediction at the level of 10%. © 1998 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We report a large enhancement of 1.7 in deuteron polarization up to values of 0.6 due to frequency modulation of the polarizing microwaves in a two liters polarized target using the method of dynamic nuclear polarization. This target was used during a deep inelastic polarized muon-deuteron scattering experiment at CERN. Measurements of the electron paramagnetic resonance absorption spectra show that frequency modulation gives rise to additional microwave absorption in the spectral wings. Abstract

Designed of the CEBAF Compton Polarimeter which will be used in the CEBAF Hall A is described. Some of the Hall A experimetns will use the 4 GeV polarized electron beam. Beam polarization and monitoring with an accuracy close to ΔP/P≥4% for beam currents ranging from 100 nA to 100 μA. The Compton Polarimeter is designed to meet these requirements. (AIP)

Abstract

The results of intranuclear cascade calculations (ideal gas with two-body collisions and no mean field), complemented by a simple percolation procedure, are compared with experimental data on protons and light nuclear fragments ([ital d], [ital t], [sup 3]He, and [sup 4]He) measured in 400 and 800 MeV/nucleon Ne+Nb collisions using a large solid angle detector. The model reproduces quite well global experimental observables like nuclear fragment multiplicity distributions or production cross sections, and nuclear fragment to proton ratios. For rapidity distributions the best agreement occurs for peripheral reactions. Transverse momentum analysis confirms once again that the cascade, although being a microscopic approach, gives too small a collective flow, the best agreement being reached for [ital Z]=2 nuclear fragments. Nevertheless these comparisons are encouraging for further improvements of the model. Moreover, such an approach is easy to extend to any other models that could calculate the nucleon phase space distribution after the compression stage of the reaction, when light nuclear fragments emitted at large angles are constructed from percolation.

Abstract

Correlations of oppositely charged pions produced in interactions of protons and light nuclei with different nuclear targets are investigated. The invariant-mass distributions are analyzed in order to search for new conjectured nuclear effects. Strong and electromagnetic final-state interactions between pions and the Coulomb interaction between pions and the target nucleus are taken into account. An admixture of pion pairs coming from resonance decays is estimated. An enhancement in the low invariant-mass region is observed only for heavy target systems. A shadowing effect due to pion absorption inside the nuclear medium is considered as a possible source of this pattern. Azimuthal π + π − correlations and pion yield dependence on the impact parameter, as well as transport calculations, seem to confirm this assumption.

Abstract

The momentum distributions with respect to the reaction plane for charged pions emitted in Ne-nucleus and Ar-nucleus collisions have been measured with the 4 π detector Diogene at the Saturn synchrotron. The reaction plane is estimated from the baryon momenta, using a standard technique for flow analysis. The pions exhibit a non-zero flow. For asymmetric systems, there is a preferential emission in the direction of the lighter (projectile) nucleus. Such a behaviour contradicts the predictions of INC calculations and is underestimated by QMD calculations which include mean field effects. It can be interpreted with a simple geometrical model in terms of absorption by the spectator nuclear matter.

Abstract

A simple method is proposed for determining the impact parameter in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions. Assuming a monotonous correlation between multiplicity and impact parameter, the multiplicity dependence of the measured cross section is interpreted as an impact-parameter dependence of the geometrical reaction cross section. The reliability of this method is checked to be excellent within the framework of the intranuclear cascade model. Its application to data analysis at lower and higher energies is suggested.

Abstract

In order to study the nuclear collective flow, the triple differential momentum distributions of charged baryons are fitted to a simple anisotropic gaussian distribution, within an acceptance which removes most of the spectator contribution. The adjusted flow angle and aspect ratios are corrected for systematic errors in the determination of the reaction plane. This method has been tested with Monte Carlo simulations and applied to experimental results and intranuclear cascade simulations of argon-nucleus collisions at 400 MeV per nucleon.

Abstract

Multiparticle Electroproduction Modular Upgradable Spectrometer (MEMUS) is a large acceptance detector intended to run on the ELFE machine at a luminosity of 10 36 cm −2 s −1 per nucleon with a hydrogen target. The detector is designed to study reactions with multiparticle final states. We present a brief description of the overall detector design and of the ongoing research program on the determination of the adequate characteristics of the different detector components.

Abstract

The weak nucleon axial-vector form factor for quasielastic interactions is determined using neutrino interaction data from the K2K Scintillating Fiber detector in the neutrino beam at KEK. More than 12 000 events are analyzed, of which half are charged-current quasielastic interactions ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}n\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}p$ occurring primarily in oxygen nuclei. We use a relativistic Fermi gas model for oxygen and assume the form factor is approximately a dipole with one parameter, the axial-vector mass ${M}_{A}$, and fit to the shape of the distribution of the square of the momentum transfer from the nucleon to the nucleus. Our best fit result for ${M}_{A}=1.20\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.12\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{GeV}$. Furthermore, this analysis includes updated vector form factors from recent electron scattering experiments and a discussion of the effects of the nucleon momentum on the shape of the fitted distributions.

The collective flow measurements presented in this lecture have been performed with the DIOGENE electronic 4π-detector1 installed at the Saturne synchrotron in Saclay, which can deliver beams up to mass 40. In order to study the properties of dense (and hot) nuclear matter, it is required to measure nucleus-nucleus collisions involving a large number of nucleons That is the reason why we focused our experiment on asymmetric collisions,, with target nuclei heavier than the beam.

Abstract

We present detailed simulations of the MEMUS detector [1] response to both electromagnetic and hadronic background, as well as to a representative set of proposed experiments at ELFE. The aim of this study is to check the adequation of the detector to the requirements of the experiments involving exclusive channels. This study is far from complete, but preliminary design refinements can be inferred. The technical details for the detector components can be found in the write-up of the detector session[2].

Abstract

We present the final results of the spin asymmetries A(1) and the spin structure functions g(1) of the proton and the deuteron in the kinematic range 0.0008 < x < 0.7 and 0.2 < Q(2) < 100 GeV2. For the determination of A(1), in addition to the usual method which employs inclusive scattering events and includes a large radiative background at low x, we use a new method which minimizes the radiative background by selecting events with at least one hadron as well as a muon in the final state. We find that this hadron method gives smaller errors for x < 0.02, so it is combined with the usual method to provide the optimal set of results. [S0556-2821(98)07017-9].

Abstract

We performed an improved search for nu(mu) --> nu(e) oscillation with the KEK to Kamioka (K2K) long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment, using the full data sample of 9.2 x 10(19) protons on target. No evidence for a nu(e) appearance signal was found, and we set bounds on the nu(mu) --> nu(e) oscillation parameters. At Deltam(2)=2.8 x 10(-3) eV(2), the best-fit value of the K2Knu(mu) disappearance analysis, we set an upper limit of sin(2)2theta(mue) < 0.13 at a 90% confidence level.

Abstract

We report the result from a search for charged-current coherent pion production induced by muon neutrinos with a mean energy of 1.3 GeV. The data are collected with a fully active scintillator detector in the K2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. No evidence for coherent pion production is observed, and an upper limit of is set on the cross section ratio of coherent pion production to the total charged-current interaction at 90% confidence level. This is the first experimental limit for coherent charged pion production in the energy region of a few GeV.

Abstract

We measured angular distributions of recoil-polarization response functions for neutral pion electroproduction for W = 1.23 GeV at Q(2) = 1.0 (GeV/c)(2), obtaining 14 separated response functions plus 2 Rosenbluth combinations; of these, 12 have been observed for the first time. Dynamical models do not describe quantities governed by imaginary parts of interference products well, indicating the need for adjusting magnitudes and phases for nonresonant amplitudes. We performed a nearly model-independent multipole analysis and obtained values for Re (S(1+)/M(1+)) = -(6.84 +/- 0.15)% and Re (E(1+)/M(1+)) = -(2.91 +/- 0.19)% that are distinctly different from those from the traditional Legendre analysis based upon M1+ dominance and ll(pi) < or = 1 truncation.

Abstract

We present results for nu(mu) oscillation in the KEK to Kamioka (K2K) long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. K2K uses an accelerator-produced nu(mu) beam with a mean energy of 1.3 GeV directed at the Super-Kamiokande detector. We observed the energy-dependent disappearance of nu(mu), which we presume have oscillated to nu(tau). The probability that we would observe these results if there is no neutrino oscillation is 0.0050% (4.0 sigma).

Abstract

We report a virtual Compton scattering study of the proton at low c.m. energies. We have determined the structure functions P(LL)-P(TT)/epsilon and P(LT), and the electric and magnetic generalized polarizabilities (GPs) alpha(E)(Q2) and beta(M)(Q2) at momentum transfer Q(2)=0.92 and 1.76 GeV2. The electric GP shows a strong falloff with Q2, and its global behavior does not follow a simple dipole form. The magnetic GP shows a rise and then a falloff; this can be interpreted as the dominance of a long-distance diamagnetic pion cloud at low Q2, compensated at higher Q2 by a paramagnetic contribution from piN intermediate states.

Abstract

The ratio of the electric and magnetic form factors of the proton G(E(p))/G(M(p)), which is an image of its charge and magnetization distributions, was measured at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) using the recoil polarization technique. The ratio of the form factors is directly proportional to the ratio of the transverse to longitudinal components of the polarization of the recoil proton in the elastic e(-->)p---> e(-->)p reaction. The new data presented span the range 3.5< Q(2)< 5.6 GeV(2) and are well described by a linear Q(2) fit. Also, the ratio sqrt[Q(2)] F(2(p))/F(1(p)) reaches a constant value above Q(2) = 2 GeV(2).
