Extremely low-mass white dwarf (ELM WD; $M_{\star}$ $\lesssim$ $0.18-0.20\ $ $M_{\odot}$) stars are thought to be formed in binary systems via stable or unstable mass transfer. Although stable mass transfer predicts the formation of ELM WDs with thick hydrogen (H) envelopes, and hence characterized by dominant residual nuclear burning along the cooling branch, the formation of ELM WDs with thinner H envelopes from unstable mass loss cannot be discarded. We compute new evolutionary sequences for helium (He) core WD stars with thin H envelope with the main aim of assessing the lowest $T_{\rm eff}$ that could be reached by this type of stars. We generate a new grid of evolutionary sequences of He core WD stars with thin H envelope in the mass range from $0.1554$ to $0.2025 M_{\odot}$, and assess the changes in both the cooling times and surface gravity induced by a reduction of the H envelope. We also determine, taking into account the predictions of progenitor evolution, the lowest $T_{\rm eff}$ reached by the resulting ELM WDs. We find that a slight reduction in the H envelope yields a significant increase in the cooling rate of ELM WDs. Because of this, ELM WDs with thin H envelope could cool down to $\sim 2500\ $K, in contrast with their canonical counterparts that cool down to $\sim 7000\ $K. In addition, we find that a reduction of the thickness of the H envelope increases markedly the surface gravity ($g$) of these stars. If ELM WDs are formed with thin H envelopes, they could be detected at very low $T_{\rm eff}$. The detection of such cool ELM WDs would be indicative that they were formed with thin H envelopes, thus opening the possibility of placing constraints to the possible mechanisms of formation of this type of stars. The thermally pulsing phase on the asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB) is the last nuclear burning phase experienced by most of low and intermediate mass stars. During this phase, the outer chemical stratification above the C/O core of the emerging white dwarf is built up. The chemical structure resulting from progenitor evolution strongly impacts the whole pulsation spectrum exhibited by ZZ Ceti stars, which are pulsating C/O core white dwarfs located on an narrow instability strip at T eff \sim 12000 K. Several physical processes occurring during progenitor evolution strongly affect the chemical structure of these stars, being those found during the TP-AGB phase ones of the most relevant for the pulsational properties of ZZ Ceti stars. We present a study of the impact of the chemical structure built up during the TP-AGB evolution on the stellar parameters inferred from asteroseismological fits of ZZ Ceti stars. Our analysis is based on a set of carbon-oxygen core white dwarf models with masses from 0.534 to 0.6463M_{\odot} derived from full evolutionary computations from the ZAMS to the ZZ Ceti domain. We compute evolutionary sequences that experience different number of thermal pulses. We find that the occurrence or not of thermal pulses during AGB evolution implies an average deviation in the astero- seimological effective temperature of ZZ Ceti stars of at most 8% and of the order of < 5% in the stellar mass. For the mass of the hydrogen envelope, however, we find deviations up to 2 orders of magnitude in the case of cool ZZ Ceti stars. For hot and intermediate temperature ZZ Ceti stars shows no differences in the hydrogen envelope mass in most cases. Our results show that, in general, the impact of the occurrence or not of thermal pulses in the progenitor stars is not negligible and must be taken into account in asteroseismological studies of ZZ Ceti stars., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures. The $\epsilon$ mechanism is a self-excitation mechanism of stellar pulsations which acts in regions inside the star where nuclear burning takes place. It has been shown that the $\epsilon$ mechanism can excite pulsations in models of hot pre-horizontal branch stars, and that the shortest periods of LS IV-14$^{\circ}$116 could be explained that way. We aim to study the $\epsilon$ mechanism in stellar models appropriate for hot pre-horizontal branch stars to predict their pulsational properties and the instability domain in the $\log g-\log T_{\rm eff}$ plane. We perform detailed computations of non-adiabatic non-radial pulsations on stellar models during the helium subflashes just before the helium-core burning phase. We find an instability domain of long-period gravity modes due to the $\epsilon$ mechanism in the $\log g-\log T_{\rm eff}$ plane at roughly $22000\,{\rm K} \lesssim T_{\rm eff}\lesssim 50000\,$K and $4.67 \lesssim \log g \lesssim 6.15$. Consequently, we find instabilities due to the $\epsilon$ mechanism on pre-extreme horizontal branch stellar models ($T_{\rm eff}\gtrsim 22000\,$K), but not on pre-blue horizontal branch stellar models ($T_{\rm eff}\lesssim 21000\,$K). The periods of excited modes range between $\sim 200$ and $\sim2000\,$s. Comparison with the three known pulsating He-rich subdwarfs shows that $\epsilon$ mechanism can excite gravity modes in stars with similar surface properties, but in our models it is only able to excite modes in the range of the shortest observed periods. We predict a new instability strip for hot-subdwarf stars of which LS IV-14$^{\circ}$116 could be the first inhabitant. Based on simple estimates we expect 1 to 10 stars in the current samples of hot-subdwarf stars to be pulsating by the $\epsilon$ mechanism. We present an asteroseismological analysis of four ZZ Ceti stars observed with \emph{Kepler}: GD 1212, SDSS J113655.17+040952.6, KIC 11911480 and KIC 4552982, based on a grid of full evolutionary models of DA white dwarf stars. We employ a grid of carbon-oxygen core white dwarfs models, characterized by a detailed and consistent chemical inner profile for the core and the envelope. In addition to the observed periods, we take into account other information from the observational data, as amplitudes, rotational splittings and period spacing, as well as photometry and spectroscopy. For each star, we present an asteroseismological model that closely reproduce their observed properties. The asteroseismological stellar mass and effective temperature of the target stars are (0.632 +/- 0.027 Msun, 10737 +/- 73 K) for GD 1212, (0.745 +/- 0.007 Msun, 11110 +/- 69 K) for KIC 4552982, (0.5480 +/- 0.01 Msun, 12721 +/- 228 K) for KIC1191480 and (0.570 +/- 0.01 Msun, 12060 +/- 300 K) for SDSS J113655.17+040952.6. In general, the asteroseismological values are in good agreement with the spectroscopy. For KIC 11911480 and SDSS J113655.17+040952.6 we derive a similar seismological mass, but the hydrogen envelope is an order of magnitude thinner for SDSS J113655.17+040952.6, that is part of a binary system and went through a common envelope phase., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Many pulsating low-mass white-dwarf stars have been detected in the last years in the field of our Galaxy. Given that some of them exhibit multiperiodic variation of brightness, it is possible to probe their interiors through asteroseismology. We present a detailed asteroseismological study of all the known low-mass variable white dwarf stars based on a complete set of fully evolutionary models representative of low-mass He-core white dwarf stars. We employed adiabatic radial and nonradial pulsation periods for low-mass white dwarf models with stellar masses ranging from $0.1554$ to $0.4352\ M_{\odot}$, that were derived by simulating the nonconservative evolution of a binary system consisting of an initially $1 M_{\odot}$ ZAMS star and a $1.4 M_{\odot}$ neutron star companion. We estimated the mean period spacing for the stars under study and then we used the comparison between the observed period spacing with the average of the computed period spacings for our grid of models to constrain the stellar mass. We also employed the individual observed periods of every known pulsating low-mass white dwarf star, to search for a representative seismological model. We found that even though the stars under analysis exhibit few periods and the period fits show multiplicity of solutions, it is possible to find seismological models whose mass and effective temperature are in agreement with the values given by spectroscopy, for most of the cases. In the two cases where we could extract the period spacing from the set of observed periods, this method led to values of the stellar masses substantially larger than expected for this type of stars. The results presented in this work show in the one hand, the need for further photometric searches, and on the other hand, some improvements of the theoretical models, in order to place the asteroseismological results on a firmer ground., Comment: 16 pages, 16 figures, 30 tables. We present a set of full evolutionary sequences for white dwarfs with hydrogen-deficient atmospheres. We take into account the evolutionary history of the progenitor stars, all the relevant energy sources involved in the cooling, element diffusion in the very outer layers, and outer boundary conditions provided by new and detailed non-gray white dwarf model atmospheres for pure helium composition. These model atmospheres are based on the most up-to-date physical inputs. Our calculations extend down to very low effective temperatures, of $\sim 2\,500$~K, provide a homogeneous set of evolutionary cooling tracks that are appropriate for mass and age determinations of old hydrogen-deficient white dwarfs, and represent a clear improvement over previous efforts, which were computed using gray atmospheres., Comment: 40 pages, 13 figures. At present, a large number of pulsating white dwarf (WD) stars is being discovered either from Earth-based surveys such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, or through observations from space (e.g., the Kepler mission). The asteroseismological techniques allow us to infer details of internal chemical stratification, the total mass, and even the stellar rotation profile. In this paper, we first describe the basic properties of WD stars and their pulsations, as well as the different sub-types of these variables known so far. We present a theoretical assessment of the expected temporal rates of change of periods ($\dot{\Pi}$) for low-mass ($M_{\star}/M_{\sun} \lesssim 0.45$) and extremely low-mass (ELM, $M_{\star}/M_{\sun} \lesssim 0.18-0.20$) white-dwarf stars, based on fully evolutionary low-mass He-core white dwarf and pre-white dwarf models. Our analysis is based on a large set of adiabatic periods of radial and nonradial pulsation modes computed on a suite of low-mass He-core white dwarf and pre-white dwarf models with masses ranging from $0.1554$ to $0.4352 M_{\sun}$. We compute the secular rates of period change of radial ($\ell= 0$) and nonradial ($\ell= 1, 2$) $g$ and $p$ modes for stellar models representative of ELMV and pre-ELMV stars, as well as for stellar objects that are evolving just before the occurrence of CNO flashes at the early cooling branches. We found that the theoretically expected magnitude of $\dot{\Pi}$ of $g$ modes for pre-ELMVs are by far larger than for ELMVs. In turn, $\dot{\Pi}$ of $g$ modes for models evolving before the occurrence of CNO flashes are larger than the maximum values of the rates of period change predicted for pre-ELMV stars. Regarding $p$ and radial modes, we found that the larger absolute values of $\dot{\Pi}$ correspond to pre-ELMV models. We conclude that any eventual measurement of a rate of period change for a given pulsating low-mass pre-white dwarf or white dwarf star could shed light about its evolutionary status. Also, in view of the systematic difficulties in the spectroscopic classification of stars of the ELM Survey, an eventual measurement of $\dot{\Pi}$ could help to confirm that a given pulsating star is an authentic low-mass white dwarf and not a star from another stellar population., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures, 2 tables. ZZ Ceti stars are pulsating white dwarfs with a carbon-oxygen core build up during the core helium burning and thermally pulsing Asymptotic Giant Branch phases. Through the interpretation of their pulsation periods by means of asteroseismology, details about their origin and evolution can be inferred. The whole pulsation spectrum exhibited by ZZ Ceti stars strongly depends on the inner chemical structure. At present, there are several processes affecting the chemical profiles that are still not accurately determined. We present a study of the impact of the current uncertainties of the white dwarf formation and evolution on the expected pulsation properties of ZZ Ceti stars. Our analysis is based on a set of carbon-oxygen core white dwarf models with masses $0.548$ and $0.837 M_{\sun}$ derived from full evolutionary computations from the ZAMS to the ZZ Ceti domain. We have considered models in which we varied the number of thermal pulses, the amount of overshooting, and the $^{12}$C$(\alpha,\gamma)^{16}$O reaction rate within their uncertainties. We explore the impact of these major uncertainties in prior evolution on the chemical structure and the expected pulsation spectrum. We find that these uncertainties yield significant changes in the $g$-mode pulsation periods. We conclude that the uncertainties in the white dwarf progenitor evolution should be be taken into account in detailed asterseismological analysis of these pulsating stars., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures. Some globular clusters host multiple stellar populations with different chemical abundance patterns. This is particularly true for $\omega$ Centauri, which shows clear evidence of a helium- enriched sub-population characterized by a helium abundance as high as $Y= 0.4$. We present a whole and consistent set of evolutionary tracks from the ZAMS to the white dwarf stage appropriate for the study of the formation and evolution of white dwarfs resulting from the evolution of helium-rich progenitors. Different issues of the white dwarf evolution and their helium-rich progenitors have been explored. In particular, the final mass of the remnants, the role of overshooting during the thermally-pulsing phase, and the cooling of the resulting white dwarfs differ markedly from the evolutionary predictions of progenitor stars with standard initial helium abundance. Finally, the pulsational properties of the resulting white dwarfs are also explored. We find that, for the range of initial masses explored in this paper, the final mass of the helium-rich progenitors is markedly larger than the final mass expected from progenitors with the usual helium abundance. We also find that progenitors with initial mass smaller than $M_\star \simeq 0.65\,M_\odot$ evolve directly into helium-core white dwarfs in less than 14~Gyr, and that for larger progenitor masses the evolution of the resulting low-mass carbon-oxygen white dwarfs is dominated by residual nuclear burning. For helium-core white dwarfs, we find that they evolve markedly faster than their counterparts coming from standard progenitors. Also, in contrast with what occurs for white dwarfs resulting from progenitors with the standard helium abundance, the impact of residual burning on the cooling time of white dwarfs is not affected by the occurrence of overshooting during the thermally-pulsing phase of progenitor stars., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, 1 table. Systematic photometric and asteroseismological studies in the last decade support the belief that white dwarfs in the solar neighborhood harbor a broad range of hydrogen-layer contents. The reasons behind this spread of hydrogen-layer masses are not understood and usually misunderstood. Hybrid $\delta$ Scuti-$\gamma$ Doradus pulsating stars show acoustic ($p$) oscillation modes typical of $\delta$ Scuti variable stars, and gravity ($g$) pulsation modes characteristic of $\gamma$ Doradus variable stars simultaneously excited. Observations from space missions like MOST, CoRoT, and \emph{Kepler} have revealed a large number of hybrid $\delta$ Scuti-$\gamma$ Doradus pulsators, thus paving the way for a exciting new channel for asteroseismic studies. We perform a detailed asteroseismological modeling of five hybrid $\delta$ Scuti-$\gamma$ Doradus stars. We employ a grid-based modeling approach to sound the internal structure of the target stars by employing a huge grid of stellar models from the zero-age main sequence to the terminal-age main sequence, varying parameters like stellar mass, effective temperature, metallicity and core overshooting. We compute their adiabatic radial ($\ell= 0$) and non-radial ($\ell= 1, 2, 3$) $p$ and $g$ mode periods. We employ two model-fitting procedures to searching for the models that best reproduce the observed pulsation spectra of each target star, that is, the asteroseismological models. We derive the fundamental parameters and the evolutionary status of five hybrid $\delta$ Scuti-$\gamma$ Doradus variable stars recently observed with the CoRoT and \emph{Kepler} space missions: CoRoT 105733033, CoRoT 100866999, KIC 11145123, KIC 9244992, and HD 49434. Many extremely low-mass (ELM) white-dwarf (WD) stars are currently being found in the field of the Milky Way. Some of these stars exhibit long-period nonradial $g$-mode pulsations, and constitute the class of ELMV pulsating WDs. In addition, several low-mass pre-WDs, which could be precursors of ELM WDs, have been observed to show short-period photometric variations likely due to nonradial $p$ modes and radial modes. They could constitute a new class of pulsating low-mass pre-WD stars, the pre-ELMV stars. In the absence of a third dredge-up episode during the asymptotic giant branch phase, white dwarf models evolved from low-metallicity progenitors have a thick hydrogen envelope, which makes hydrogen shell burning be the most important energy source. We investigate the pulsational stability of white dwarf models with thick envelopes to see whether nonradial $g$-mode pulsations are triggered by hydrogen burning, with the aim of placing constraints on hydrogen shell burning in cool white dwarfs and on a third dredge-up during the asymptotic giant branch evolution of their progenitor stars. We construct white-dwarf sequences from low-metallicity progenitors by means of full evolutionary calculations, and analyze their pulsation stability for the models in the range of effective temperatures $T_{\rm eff} \sim 15\,000\,-\, 8\,000$ K. We demonstrate that, for white dwarf models with masses $M_{\star} \lesssim 0.71\,\rm M_{\sun}$ and effective temperatures $8\,500 \lesssim T_{\rm eff} \lesssim 11\,600$ K that evolved from low-metallicity progenitors ($Z= 0.0001$, $0.0005$, and $0.001$) the dipole ($\ell= 1$) and quadrupole ($\ell=2$) $g_1$ modes are excited mostly due to the hydrogen-burning shell through the $\varepsilon$-mechanism, in addition to other $g$ modes driven by either the $\kappa-\gamma$ or the convective driving mechanism. However, the $\varepsilon$ mechanism is insufficient to drive these modes in white dwarfs evolved from solar-metallicity progenitors. We suggest that efforts should be made to observe the dipole $g_1$ mode in white dwarfs associated with low-metallicity environments, such as globular clusters and/or the galactic halo, to place constraints on hydrogen shell burning in cool white dwarfs and the third dredge-up episode during the preceding asymptotic giant branch phase., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. We employ an asteroseismic model of L19-2, a relatively massive ($M_{\star} \sim 0.75 M_{\sun}$) and hot ($T_{\rm eff} \sim 12\,100$ K) pulsating DA (H-rich atmosphere) white dwarf star (DAV or ZZ Ceti variable), and use the observed values of the temporal rates of period change of its dominant pulsation modes ($\Pi \sim 113$ s and $\Pi \sim 192$ s), to derive a new constraint on the mass of the axion, the hypothetical non-barionic particle considered as a possible component of the dark matter of the Universe. If the asteroseismic model employed is an accurate representation of L19-2, then our results indicate hints of extra cooling in this star, compatible with emission of axions of mass $m_{\rm a} \cos^2 \beta \lesssim 25$ meV or an axion-electron coupling constant of $g_{\rm ae} \lesssim 7 \times 10^{-13}$., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables. Because of the large neutron excess of $^{22}$Ne, this isotope rapidly sediments in the interior of the white dwarfs. This process releases an additional amount of energy, thus delaying the cooling times of the white dwarf. This influences the ages of different stellar populations derived using white dwarf cosmochronology. Furthermore, the overabundance of $^{22}$Ne in the inner regions of the star, modifies the Brunt-V\"ais\"al\"a frequency, thus altering the pulsational properties of these stars. In this work, we discuss the impact of $^{22}$Ne sedimentation in white dwarfs resulting from Solar metallicity progenitors ($Z=0.02$). We performed evolutionary calculations of white dwarfs of masses $0.528$, $0.576$, $0.657$ and $0.833$ M$_{\sun}$, derived from full evolutionary computations of their progenitor stars, starting at the Zero Age Main Sequence all the way through central hydrogen and helium burning, thermally-pulsing AGB and post-AGB phases. Our computations show that at low luminosities ($\log(L/L_{\sun})\la -4.25$), $^{22}$Ne sedimentation delays the cooling of white dwarfs with Solar metallicity progenitors by about 1~Gyr. Additionally, we studied the consequences of $^{22}$Ne sedimentation on the pulsational properties of ZZ~Ceti white dwarfs. We find that $^{22}$Ne sedimentation induces differences in the periods of these stars larger than the present observational uncertainties, particularly in more massive white dwarfs., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 8 pages, 6 figures

We present an asteroseismological study of SDSS J0349-0059 and VV 47 aimed mainly at deriving their total mass on the basis of state-of-the-art PG 1159 evolutionary models. We compute adiabatic nonradial $g$-mode pulsation periods for PG 1159 evolutionary models with stellar masses ranging from $0.515$ to $0.741\ M_{\sun}$, that take into account the complete evolution of the progenitor stars. We first estimate a mean period spacing for both SDSS J0349-0059 and VV 47. By comparing the observed period spacing with the asymptotic period spacing we obtain $M_{\star}\sim 0.569\ M_{\sun}$ for SDSS J0349-0059 and $M_{\star}\sim 0.523\ M_{\sun}$ for VV 47. If we compare the observed period spacing with the average of the computed period spacings we found $M_{\star}\sim 0.535\ M_{\sun}$ for SDSS J0349-0059 and $M_{\star}\sim 0.528 M_{\sun}$ for VV 47. Searching for the best period fit we found, in the case of SDSS J0349-0059, an asteroseismological model with $M_{\star}= 0.542\ M_{\sun}$ and $T_{\rm eff}= 91\, 255\ $K. For VV 47, we could not find a unique and unambiguous asteroseismological model. Finally, for SDSS J0349-0059, we determined the rotation period as being $P_{\rm rot}= 1/\Omega \sim 0.407$ days. The results presented in this work constitute a further step in the study of GW Vir stars through asteroseismology in the frame of fully evolutionary models of PG 1159 stars. Two low-mass pre-white dwarfs, which could be precursors of ELM white dwarfs, have been observed to show multiperiodic photometric variations. They could constitute a new class of pulsating low-mass pre-white dwarf stars. We present a detailed nonadiabatic pulsation study of such stars, employing full evolutionary sequences of low-mass He-core pre-white dwarf models. We have considered models in which element diffusion is accounted for and also models in which it is neglected. We confirm and explore in detail a new instability strip in the domain of low gravities and low effective temperatures of the $T_{\rm eff}-\log g$ diagram, where low-mass pre-white dwarfs are currently found. The destabilized modes are radial and nonradial $p$ and $g$ modes excited by the $\kappa-\gamma$ mechanism acting mainly at the zone of the second partial ionization of He, with non-negligible contributions from the region of the first partial ionization of He and the partial ionization of H. The computations with element diffusion are unable to explain the pulsations observed in the two known pulsating pre-white dwarfs, suggesting that element diffusion might be inhibited at these stages of the pre-white dwarf evolution. Our nonadiabatic models without diffusion, on the other hand, naturally explain the existence and range of periods of the pulsating pre-white dwarf star WASP J1628$+$10B, although they fail to explain the pulsations of WASP J0247$-$25B, the other known member of the class, indicating that the He abundance in the driving region of this star might be substantially larger than predicted by our models. Further discoveries of additional members of this new class of pulsating stars and their analysis in the context of the theoretical background presented in this paper will shed new light on the evolutionary history of their progenitor stars., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures, 1 table. In order to locate these stars in the $T_{\rm eff} - \log g$ diagram we fit optical spectra (SDSS) with synthetic non-magnetic spectra derived from model atmospheres. Methods. To carry out this study, we used the photometric data obtained by us for these stars with the 2.15m telescope at CASLEO, Argentina. We analyzed their light curves and we apply the Discrete Fourier Transform to determine the pulsation frequencies. Finally, we compare both stars in the $T_{\rm eff} - \log g$ diagram, with known two pre-white dwarfs, seven pulsating pre-ELM white dwarf stars, $\delta$ Scuti and SX Phe stars. Results. We report the discovery of pulsations in SDSSJ145847.02$+$070754.46 and SDSSJ173001.94$+$070600.25. We determine their effective temperature and surface gravity to be $T_{\rm eff}$ = 7 972 $\pm$ 200 K, $\log g$ = 4.25 $\pm$ 0.5 and $T_{\rm eff}$ = 7 925 $\pm$ 200 K, $\log g$ = 4.25 $\pm$ 0.5, respectively. With these parameters these new pulsating low-mass stars can be identified with either ELM white dwarfs (with ~ 0.17 Mo) or more massive SX Phe stars. We identified pulsation periods of 3 278.7 and 1 633.9 s for SDSSJ145847.02$+$070754.46 and a pulsation period of 3 367.1 s for SDSSJ173001.94$+$070600.25. These two new objects together with those of Maxted et al. (2013, 2014) indicate the possible existence of a new instability domain towards the late stages of evolution of low-mass white dwarf stars, although their identification with SX Phe stars cannot be discarded., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in A&AL

Low-mass ($M_{\star}/M_{\sun} \lesssim 0.45$) white dwarfs, including the so called extremely low-mass white dwarfs (ELM, $M_{\star}/M_{\sun } \lesssim 0.18-0.20$), are being currently discovered in the field of our Galaxy through dedicated photometric surveys. The fact that some of them pulsate opens the unparalleled chance for sounding their interiors. We present a detailed nonadiabatic pulsational analysis of such stars based on a new set of He-core white-dwarf models with masses ranging from $0.1554$ to $0.4352 M_{\sun}$ derived by computing the non-conservative evolution of a binary system consisting of an initially $1 M_{\sun}$ ZAMS star and a $1.4 M_{\sun}$ neutron star. We have computed nonadiabatic radial modes and nonradial g and p modes to assess the dependence of the pulsational stability properties of these objects with stellar parameters such as the stellar mass, the effective temperature, and the convective efficiency. We found that a dense spectrum of unstable radial modes and nonradial g and p modes are driven by the kappa-gamma mechanism due to the partial ionization of H in the stellar envelope, in addition to low-order unstable g modes characterized by short pulsation periods which are significantly excited by H burning via the epsilon mechanism of mode driving. In all the cases, the characteristic times required for the modes to reach amplitudes large enough as to be observable (the $e$-folding times) are always shorter than cooling timescales. We explore the dependence of the ranges of unstable mode periods (the longest and shortest excited periods) with the effective temperature, the stellar mass, the convective efficiency, and the harmonic degree of the modes. We also compare our theoretical predictions with the excited modes observed in the seven known variable low-mass white dwarfs (ELMVs), and found an excellent agreement., Comment: 15 pages, 17 figures, 3 tables. We present new white dwarf evolutionary sequences for low-metallicity progenitors. White dwarf sequences have been derived from full evolutionary calculations that take into account the entire history of progenitor stars, including the thermally-pulsing and the post-asymptotic giant branch phases. We show that for progenitor metallicities in the range 0.00003--0.001, and in the absence of carbon enrichment due to the occurrence of a third dredge-up episode, the resulting H envelope of the low-mass white dwarfs is thick enough to make stable H burning the most important energy source even at low luminosities. This has a significant impact on white dwarf cooling times. This result is independent of the adopted mass-loss rate during the thermally-pulsing and post-AGB phases, and the planetary nebulae stage. We conclude that in the absence of third dredge-up episodes, a significant part of the evolution of low-mass white dwarfs resulting from low-metallicity progenitors is dominated by stable H burning. Our study opens the possibility of using the observed white dwarf luminosity function of low-metallicity globular clusters to constrain the efficiency of third dredge up episodes during the thermally-pulsing AGB phase of low-metallicity progenitors., Comment: To be published in Astronomy and Astrophysics. 12 pages, 11 figures

Most of low- and intermediate-mass stars that populate the Universe will end their lives as white dwarf stars. These ancient stellar remnants have encrypted inside a precious record of the evolutionary history of the progenitor stars, providing a wealth of information about the evolution of stars, star formation, and the age of a variety of stellar populations, such as our Galaxy and open and globular clusters. While some information like surface chemical composition, temperature and gravity of white dwarfs can be inferred from spectroscopy, the internal structure of these compact stars can be unveiled only by means of asteroseismology, an approach based on the comparison between the observed pulsation periods of variable stars and the periods of appropriate theoretical models. In this communication, we first briefly describe the physical properties of white dwarf stars and the various families of pulsating white dwarfs known up to the present day, and then we present two recent analysis carried out by the La Plata Stellar Evolution and Pulsation Group in this active field of research., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, 1 table. The detection of pulsations in white dwarfs with low mass offers the possibility of probing their internal structure through asteroseismology and place constraints on the binary evolutionary processes involved in their formation. In this paper we assess the impact of stable H burning on the pulsational stability properties of low-mass He-core white dwarf models resulting from binary star evolutionary calculations. We found that, apart from a dense spectrum of unstable radial modes and nonradial $g$- and $p$-modes driven by the $\kappa$-mechanism due to the partial ionization of H in the stellar envelope, some unstable $g$-modes with short pulsation periods are powered also by H burning via the $\varepsilon$-mechanism of mode driving. This is the first time that $\varepsilon$-destabilized modes are found in models representative of cool white dwarf stars. The short periods recently detected in the pulsating low-mass white dwarf SDSS J111215.82+111745.0 could constitute the first evidence of the existence of stable H burning in these stars, in particular in the so-called extremely low-mass white dwarfs., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. The discovery of pulsations in some low-mass white dwarfs, including the so-called extremely low-mass white dwarfs, has opened the unprecedented opportunity of probing the internal structure of these ancient stars. We present a detailed adiabatic pulsational study of these stars based on a new set of He-core white-dwarf models with masses ranging from $0.1554$ to $0.4352 M_{\odot}$ derived by computing the non-conservative evolution of a binary system consisting of an initially $1 M_{\odot}$ ZAMS star and a $1.4 M_{\odot}$ neutron star. We computed adiabatic radial ($\ell= 0$) and non-radial ($\ell= 1, 2$) $p$ and $g$ modes to assess the dependence of the pulsational properties of these objects on stellar parameters such as the stellar mass and the effective temperature, as well as the effects of element diffusion. We found that for white dwarf models with masses below $\sim 0.18 M_{\odot}$, $g$ modes mainly probe the core regions and $p$ modes the envelope, therefore pulsations offer the opportunity of constraining both the core and envelope chemical structure of these stars via asteroseismology. For models with $M_* \gtrsim 0.18 M_{\odot}$, on the other hand, $g$ modes are very sensitive to the He/H compositional gradient and therefore can be used as a diagnostic tool for constraining the H envelope thickness. Because both types of objects have not only very distinct evolutionary histories (according to whether the progenitor stars have experienced CNO-flashes or not), but also have strongly different pulsation properties, we propose to define white dwarfs with masses below $\sim 0.18 M_{\odot}$ as ELM (extremely low-mass) white dwarfs, and white dwarfs with $M_* \gtrsim 0.18 M_{\odot}$ as LM (low-mass) white dwarfs., Comment: 22 pages, 32 figures, 1 table. Context: KUV 05134+2605 is one of the 21 pulsating DB white dwarfs (V777 Her or DBV variables) known so far. The detailed investigation of the short-period and low-amplitude pulsations of these relatively faint targets requires considerable observational efforts from the ground, long-term single-site or multisite observations. The observed amplitudes of excited modes undergo short-term variations in many cases, which makes the determination of pulsation modes difficult. Methods: We re-analysed the data already published, and collected new measurements. We compared the frequency content of the different datasets from the different epochs and performed various tests to check the reliability of the frequency determinations. The mean period spacings were investigated with linear fits to the observed periods, Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Inverse Variance significance tests, and Fourier analysis of different period sets, including a Monte Carlo test simulating the effect of alias ambiguities. We employed fully evolutionary DB white dwarf models for the asteroseismic investigations. Results: We identified 22 frequencies between 1280 and 2530 microHz. These form 12 groups, which suggests at least 12 possible frequencies for the asteroseismic investigations. Thanks to the extended observations, KUV 05134+2605 joined the group of rich white dwarf pulsators. We identified one triplet and at least one doublet with a ~9 microHz frequency separation, from which we derived a stellar rotation period of 0.6 d. We determined the mean period spacings of ~31 and ~18 s for the modes we propose as dipole and quadrupole, respectively. We found an excellent agreement between the stellar mass derived from the l=1 period spacing and the period-to-period fits, all providing M_* = 0.84-0.85 M_Sun solutions. Pulsating white dwarf stars can be used as astrophysical laboratories to constrain the properties of weakly interacting particles. Comparing the cooling rates of these stars with the expected values from theoretical models allows us to search for additional sources of cooling due to the emission of axions, neutralinos, or neutrinos with magnetic dipole moment. In this work, we derive an upper bound to the neutrino magnetic dipole moment using an estimate of the rate of period change of the pulsating DB white dwarf star PG 1351+489. By comparing the theoretical rate of change of period expected for this star with the rate of change of period with time of PG 1351+489, we assess the possible existence of additional cooling by neutrinos with magnetic dipole moment. Our models suggest the existence of some additional cooling in this pulsating DB white dwarf, consistent with a non-zero magnetic dipole moment. Our upper limit for the neutrino magnetic dipole moment is somewhat less restrictive than, but still compatible with, other limits inferred from the white dwarf luminosity function or from the color-magnitude diagram of the Globular cluster M5. Further improvements of the measurement of the rate of period change of the dominant pulsation mode of PG 1351+489 will be necessary to confirm our bound., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables. We report the discovery of pulsations in the spectroscopic PG 1159 type pre-white dwarf SDSS J075415.12+085232.18. Analysis of the spectrum by Werner, Rauch and Kepler (2014) indicated Teff=120 000+/-10 000 K, log g=7.0+/-0.3, mass M=0.52+/-0.02 Msun, C/He=0.33 by number. We obtained time-series images with the SOAR 4.1 m telescope and 2.1 m Otto Struve telescope at McDonald Observatory and show the star is also a variable PG 1159 type star, with dominant period of 525 s., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We present the first asteroseismological study for 42 massive ZZ Ceti stars based on a large set of fully evolutionary carbon$-$oxygen core DA white dwarf models characterized by a detailed and consistent chemical inner profile for the core and the envelope. Our sample comprise all the ZZ Ceti stars with spectroscopic stellar masses between 0.72 and $1.05M_{\odot}$ known to date. The asteroseismological analysis of a set of 42 stars gives the possibility to study the ensemble properties of the massive pulsating white dwarf stars with carbon$-$oxygen cores, in particular the thickness of the hydrogen envelope and the stellar mass. A significant fraction of stars in our sample have stellar mass high enough as to crystallize at the effective temperatures of the ZZ Ceti instability strip, which enables us to study the effects of crystallization on the pulsation properties of these stars. Our results show that the phase diagram presented in Horowitz et al. (2010) seems to be a good representation of the crystallization process inside white dwarf stars, in agreement with the results from white dwarf luminosity function in globular clusters., Comment: 58 pages, 11 figures, accepted in ApJ

A secular variation of $G$ modifies the structure and evolutionary time scales of white dwarfs. Using an state-of-the-art stellar evolutionary code, an up-to-date pulsational code, and a detailed population synthesis code we demonstrate that the effects of a running $G$ are obvious both in the properties of individual white dwarfs, and in those of the white dwarf populations in clusters. Specifically, we show that the white dwarf evolutionary sequences depend on both the value of $\dot G/G$, and on the value of $G$ when the white dwarf was born. We show as well that the pulsational properties of variable white dwarfs can be used to constrain $\dot G/G$. Finally, we also show that the ensemble properties of of white dwarfs in clusters can also be used to set upper bounds to $\dot G/G$. Precisely, the tightest bound --- $\dot G/G \sim -1.8 10^{-12}$ yr$^{-1}$ --- is obtained studying the population of the old, metal-rich, well populated, open cluster NGC 6791. Less stringent upper limits can be obtained comparing the theoretical results obtained taking into account the effects of a running $G$ with the measured rates of change of the periods of two well studied pulsating white dwarfs, G117--B15A and R548. Using these white dwarfs we obtain $\dot G/G\sim -1.8\times 10^{-10}$ yr$^{-1}$, and $\dot G/G\sim -1.3\times 10^{-10}$ yr$^{-1}$, respectively, which although less restrictive than the previous bound, can be improved measuring the rate of change of the period of massive white dwarfs., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. We provide a fine and homogeneous grid of evolutionary sequences for He-core white dwarfs with masses 0.15-0.45 Msun, including the mass range for ELM white dwarfs (<0.20Msun). The grid is appropriate for mass and age determination, and to study their pulsational properties. White dwarf sequences have been computed by performing full evolutionary calculations that consider the main energy sources and processes of chemical abundance changes during white dwarf evolution. Initial models for the evolving white dwarfs have been obtained by computing the non-conservative evolution of a binary system consisting of a Msun ZAMS star and a 1.4 Msun neutron star for various initial orbital periods. To derive cooling ages and masses for He-core white dwarf we perform a least square fitting of the M(Teff, g) and Age(Teff, g) relations provided by our sequences by using a scheme that takes into account the time spent by models in different regions of the Teff-g plane. This is useful when multiple solutions for cooling age and mass determinations are possible in the case of CNO-flashing sequences. We also explore the adiabatic pulsational properties of models near the critical mass for the development of CNO flashes (~0.2 Msun). This is motivated by the discovery of pulsating white dwarfs with stellar masses near this threshold value. We obtain reliable and homogeneous mass and cooling age determinations for 58 very low-mass white dwarfs, including 3 pulsating stars. Also, we find substantial differences in the period spacing distributions of g-modes for models with stellar masses ~ 0.2 Msun, which could be used as a seismic tool to distinguish stars that have undergone CNO flashes in their early cooling phase from those that have not. A secular variation of the gravitational constant modifies the structure and evolutionary time scales of white dwarfs. Using an state-of-the-art stellar evolutionary code and an up-to-date pulsational code we compute the effects of a secularly varying $G$ on the pulsational properties of variable white dwarfs. Comparing the the theoretical results obtained taking into account the effects of a running $G$ with the observed periods and measured rates of change of the periods of two well studied pulsating white dwarfs, G117--B15A and R548, we place constraints on the rate of variation of Newton's constant. We derive an upper bound $\dot G/G\sim -1.8\times 10^{-10}$ yr$^{-1}$ using the variable white dwarf G117--B15A, and $\dot G/G\sim -1.3\times 10^{-10}$ yr$^{-1}$ using R548. Although these upper limits are currently less restrictive than those obtained using other techniques, they can be improved in a future measuring the rate of change of the period of massive white dwarfs., Comment: 13 pages, 4 tables, 3 figures. Recent years have witnessed the discovery of many low-mass ($\lesssim 0.45 M_{\odot}$) white dwarf (WD) stars --- expected to harbor He cores--- in the field of the Milky Way and in several galactic globular and open clusters. Recently, three pulsating objects of this kind have been discovered: SDSS J1840+6423, SDSS J1112+1117, and SDSS J1518+0658. Motivated by these very exciting findings, and in view of the valuable asteroseismological potential of these objects, we present here the main outcomes of a detailed theoretical study on the seismic properties of low-mass He-core WDs based on fully evolutionary models representative of these objects. Pulsating white dwarfs with hydrogen-rich atmospheres, also known as DAV stars, can be used as astrophysical laboratories to constrain the properties of fundamental particles like axions. Comparing the measured cooling rates of these stars with the expected values from theoretical models allows us to search for sources of additional cooling due to the emission of weakly interacting particles. In this paper, we present an independent inference of the mass of the axion using the recent determination of the evolutionary cooling rate of R548, the DAV class prototype. We employ a state-of-the-art code which allows us to perform a detailed asteroseismological fit based on fully evolutionary sequences. Stellar cooling is the solely responsible of the rates of change of period with time ($\dot\Pi$) for the DAV class. Thus, the inclusion of axion emission in these sequences notably influences the evolutionary timescales, and also the expected pulsational properties of the DAV stars. This allows us to compare the theoretical $\dot\Pi$ values to the corresponding empirical rate of change of period with time of R548 to discern the presence of axion cooling. We found that if the dominant period at 213.13 s in R548 is associated with a pulsation mode trapped in the hydrogen envelope, our models indicate the existence of additional cooling in this pulsating white dwarf, consistent with axions of mass $m_{\rm a} \cos^2 \beta \sim 17.1$ meV at a 2$\sigma$ confidence level. This determination is in agreement with the value inferred from another well-studied DAV, G117$-$B15A. We now have two independent and consistent estimates of the mass of the axion obtained from DAVs, although additional studies of other pulsating white dwarfs are needed to confirm this value of the axion mass., Comment: 12 pages, 2 tables, 1 figure. Helium-rich subdwarfs are a rare subclass of hot subdwarf stars which constitute a small and inhomogeneous group showing varying degrees of helium enrichment. Only one star, LS IV $^\circ$14 116 has been found to show multiperiodic luminosity variations. The variability of LS IV $^\circ$14 116 has been explained as the consequence of nonradial g-mode oscillations, whose excitation is difficult to understand within the frame of the standard $\kappa$-mechanism driving pulsations in sdBV stars. In a recent study, we have proposed that the pulsations of LS IV $^\circ$14 116 might be driven through the $\epsilon$-mechanism acting in unstable He-burning zones in the interior of the star, that appear before the quiescent He-burning phase. One of the few accepted scenarios for the formation of He-rich subdwarfs is the merger of two He-core white dwarfs. We present here a detailed pulsational study applied to low-mass He-core white dwarfs, based on full evolutionary models representative of these objects. The background stellar models on which our pulsational analysis was carried out were derived by taking into account the complete evolutionary history of the progenitor stars, with special emphasis on the diffusion processes acting during the white dwarf cooling phase. We computed nonradial $g$-modes to assess the dependence of the pulsational properties of these objects with stellar parameters such as the stellar mass and the effective temperature, and also with element diffusion processes. We also performed a g- and p-mode pulsational stability analysis on our models and found well-defined blue edges of the instability domain, where these stars should start to exhibit pulsations. We found substantial differences in the seismic properties of white dwarfs with $M_* \gtrsim 0.20 M_{\odot}$ and the extremely low-mass (ELM) white dwarfs ($M_* \lesssim 0.20 M_{\odot}$). Specifically, $g$-mode pulsation modes in ELM white dwarfs mainly probe the core regions and are not dramatically affected by mode-trapping effects by the He/H interface, whereas the opposite is true for more massive He-core white dwarfs. We found that element diffusion processes substantially affects the shape of the He/H chemical transition region, leading to non-negligible changes in the period spectrum of low-mass white dwarfs. Our stability analysis successfully predicts the pulsations of the only known variable low-mass white dwarf (SDSS J184037.78+642312.3), and also predicts both $g$- and $p$-mode pulsational instabilities in a significant number of known low-mass and ELM white dwarfs., Comment: 14 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables. High-field magnetic white dwarfs have been long suspected to be the result of stellar mergers. However, the nature of the coalescing stars and the precise mechanism that produces the magnetic field are still unknown. Here we show that the hot, convective, differentially rotating corona present in the outer layers of the remnant of the merger of two degenerate cores is able to produce magnetic fields of the required strength that do not decay for long timescales. We also show, using an state-of-the-art Monte Carlo simulator, that the expected number of high-field magnetic white dwarfs produced in this way is consistent with that found in the solar neighborhood., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in proceedings "18th European White Dwarf Workshop"

White dwarf evolution is essentially a gravothermal cooling process, which,for cool white dwarfs, sensitively depends on the treatment of the outer boundary conditions. We provide detailed outer boundary conditions appropriate for computing the evolution of cool white dwarfs employing detailed non-gray model atmospheres for pure H composition. We also explore the impact on the white dwarf cooling times of different assumptions for energy transfer in the atmosphere of cool white dwarfs. Detailed non-gray model atmospheres are computed taken into account non-ideal effects in the gas equation of state and chemical equilibrium, collision-induced absorption from molecules, and the Lyman alpha quasi-molecular opacity. Our results show that the use of detailed outer boundary conditions becomes relevant for effective temperatures lower than 5800 and 6100K for sequences with 0.60 and 0.90 M_sun, respectively. Detailed model atmospheres predict ages that are up to approx 10% shorter at log L/L_sun=-4 when compared with the ages derived using Eddington-like approximations at tau_Ross=2/3. We also analyze the effects of various assumptions and physical processes of relevance in the calculation of outer boundary conditions. In particular, we find that the Ly_alpha red wing absorption does not affect substantially the evolution of white dwarfs. White dwarf cooling timescales are sensitive to the surface boundary conditions for T_eff < 6000K. Interestingly enough, non-gray effects have little consequences on these cooling times at observable luminosities. In fact, collision-induced absorption processes, which significantly affect the spectra and colors of old white dwarfs with hydrogen-rich atmospheres, have not noticeable effects in their cooling rates, except throughout the Rosseland mean opacity., Comment: 6 pages, 9 figures, to be published in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We employ a state-of-the-art asteroseismological model of G117-B15A, the archetype of the H-rich atmosphere (DA) white dwarf pulsators (also known as DAV or ZZ Ceti variables), and use the most recently measured value of the rate of period change for the dominant mode of this pulsating star to derive a new constraint on the mass of axion, the still conjectural non-barionic particle considered as candidate for dark matter of the Universe. Assuming that G117-B15A is truly represented by our asteroseismological model, and in particular, that the period of the dominant mode is associated to a pulsation g-mode trapped in the H envelope, we find strong indications of the existence of extra cooling in this star, compatible with emission of axions of mass m_a \cos^2 \beta = 17.4^{+2.3}_{-2.7} meV., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures and 3 tables. We present a large bank of chemical profiles and pulsation periods suited for asteroseismological studies of ZZ Ceti (or DAV) variable stars. Our background equilibrium DA white dwarf models are the result of fully evolutionary computations that take into account the complete history of the progenitor stars from the ZAMS. The models are characterized by self-consistent chemical structures from the centre to the surface, and cover a wide range of stellar masses, effective temperatures, and H envelope thicknesses. We present dipole and quadrupole pulsation $g$-mode periods comfortably covering the interval of periods observed in ZZ Ceti stars. DBV stars are pulsating white dwarfs with atmospheres rich in He. Asteroseismology of DBV stars can provide valuable clues about the origin, structure and evolution of hydrogen-deficient white dwarfs, and may allow to study neutrino and axion physics. Recently, a new DBV star, KIC 8626021, has been discovered in the field of the \emph{Kepler} spacecraft. It is expected that further monitoring of this star in the next years will enable astronomers to determine its detailed asteroseismic profile. We perform an asteroseismological analysis of KIC 8626021 on the basis of fully evolutionary DB white-dwarf models. We employ a complete set of evolutionary DB white-dwarf structures covering a wide range of effective temperatures and stellar masses. They have been obtained on the basis of a complete treatment of the evolutionary history of progenitors stars. We compute g-mode adiabatic pulsation periods for this set of models and compare them with the pulsation properties exhibited by KIC 8626021. On the basis of the mean period spacing of the star, we found that the stellar mass should be substantially larger than spectroscopy indicates. From period-to-period fits we found an asteroseismological model characterized by an effective temperature much higher than the spectroscopic estimate. In agreement with a recent asteroseismological analysis of this star by other authors, we conclude that KIC 8626021 is located near the blue edge of the DBV instability strip, contrarily to spectroscopic predictions. Asteroseismology of DAV stars (ZZ Ceti variables) can provide valuable clues about the origin, structure and evolution of DA (atmospheres rich in H) white dwarfs. Recently, a new DAV star, WD J191643.83+393849.7, has been discovered in the field of the Kepler spacecraft. It is expected that further monitoring of this star in the next years will enable astronomers to obtain the best lightcurve of a pulsating DA white dwarf ever recorded, and thus to know with unprecedented precision the hidden details of the internal structure of this star. In this paper, we perform a first asteroseismological analysis of WD J191643.83+393849.7 on the basis of fully evolutionary DA white-dwarf models. Specifically, we employ a complete set of evolutionary DA white-dwarf structures covering a wide range of effective temperatures, stellar masses, and H envelope thicknesses. These models have been obtained on the basis of a complete treatment of the evolutionary history of progenitors stars. We compute g-mode adiabatic pulsation periods for this set of models and compare them with the pulsation periods exhibited by WD J191643.83+393849.7. Based on a tentative estimation of the mean period spacing of the star, we find that the stellar mass should be substantially large ($\gtrsim 0.80 M_{\odot}$), in agreement with the spectroscopically derived stellar mass. Also, from period-to-period fits we find an asteroseismological model characterised by a low effective temperature, rather high stellar mass and a thin H envelope. The possibility that this rather massive pulsating white dwarf can be further monitored with Kepler with a high degree of detail turns the star WD J191643.83+393849.7 into a promising and unique object to study the physics of crystallization and carbon/oxygen phase diagrams at high densities. We present results of an ongoing study of the pulsational properties of sdB stellar models aimed at exploring the consequences of detailed chemical transitions for radial, $p-$ and $g-$ modes. In particular, we focus on the effects of diffusion at the H-He transition and of He-burning at the convective cores. We find that diffusion of He and H has a strong impact on the period spectrum of sdBVs stars, leading to less efficient mode trapping. Our results also suggests that asteroseismology of sdBVs stars might offer a very good opportunity to constrain extramixing processes in the He-burning cores of horizontal branch stars., Comment: 6 Figures, 10 pages. Cool white dwarfs are reliable and independent stellar chronometers. The most common white dwarfs have carbon-oxygen dense cores. Consequently, the cooling ages of very cool white dwarfs sensitively depend on the adopted phase diagram of the carbon-oxygen binary mixture. A new phase diagram of dense carbon-oxygen mixtures appropriate for white dwarf interiors has been recently obtained using direct molecular dynamics simulations. In this paper, we explore the consequences of this phase diagram in the evolution of cool white dwarfs. To do this we employ a detailed stellar evolutionary code and accurate initial white dwarf configurations, derived from the full evolution of progenitor stars. We use two different phase diagrams, that of Horowitz et al. (2010), which presents an azeotrope, and the phase diagram of Segretain & Chabrier (1993), which is of the spindle form. We computed the evolution of 0.593 and 0.878M_sun white dwarf models during the crystallization phase, and we found that the energy released by carbon-oxygen phase separation is smaller when the new phase diagram of Horowitz et al. (2010) is used. This translates into time delays that are on average a factor about 2 smaller than those obtained when the phase diagram of Segretain & Chabrier (1993) is employed. Our results have important implications for white dwarf cosmochronology, because the cooling ages of very old white dwarfs are different for the two phase diagrams. This may have a noticeable impact on the age determinations of very old globular clusters, for which the white dwarf color-magnitude diagram provides an independent way of estimating their age., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

ZZ Ceti stars form the most numerous group of degenerate variable stars. They are otherwise normal DA (H-rich atmospheres) white dwarfs that exhibit pulsations. Here, we present an asteroseismological analysis for 44 bright ZZ Ceti stars based on a new set of fully evolutionary DA white dwarf models characterized by detailed chemical profiles from the centre to the surface. One of our targets is the archetypal ZZ Ceti star G117$-$B15A, for which we obtain an asteroseismological model with an effective temperature and a surface gravity in excellent agreement with the spectroscopy. The asteroseismological analysis of a set of 44 ZZ Ceti stars has the potential to characterize the global properties of the class, in particular the thicknesses of the hydrogen envelope and the stellar masses. Our results support the belief that white dwarfs in the solar neighbourhood harbor a broad range of hydrogen-layer thickness., Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures, 6 tables. We investigate the pulsation driving mechanism responsible for the long-period photometric variations observed in LS IV-14{\deg}116, a subdwarf B star showing a He-enriched atmospheric composition. To this end, we perform detailed nonadiabatic pulsation computations over fully evolutionary post He-core-flash stellar structure models, appropriate for hot subdwarf stars at evolutionary phases previous to the He-core burning stage. We found that the variability of LS IV-14{\deg}116 can be attributed to nonradial g-mode pulsations excited by the {\epsilon}-mechanism acting in the He-burning shells that appear before the star settles on the He-core burning stage. Even more interestingly, our results show that LS IV-14{\deg}116 could be the first known pulsating star in which the {\epsilon}-mechanism of mode excitation is operating. Last but not least, we find that the period range of destabilized modes is sensitive to the exact location of the burning shell, something that might help to distinguish between the different evolutionary scenarios proposed for the formation of this star., Comment: 4 figures, 1 table, 4 pages, Accepted for publication in ApJL

We perform an asteroseismological study on the DAV star G117-B15A on the basis of a modern set of fully evolutionary DA white dwarf models that have consistent chemical profiles at the core and the envelope. We found an asteroseismological model for G117-B15A that closely reproduces its observed pulsation periods. We put asteroseismological constraints on the internal rotation profile of the GW Vir (PG1159-type) star PG 0122+200. To this end we employ a state-of-the-art asteroseismological model for this star and we assess the expected frequency splittings induced by rotation adopting a forward approach in which we compare the theoretical frequency separations with the observed ones assuming different types of plausible internal rotation profiles. We also employ two asteroseismological inversion methods for the inversion of the rotation profile of PG 0122+200. We find evidence for differential rotation in this star. We demonstrate that the frequency splittings of the rotational multiplets exhibited by PG 0122+200 are compatible with a rotation profile in which the central regions are spinning about 2.4 times faster than the stellar surface., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables.
