Interviews with 182 private veterinarian practitioners show that differentiation in mode of practice, small (companion or pet) in contrast to large (farm or food) animal, and its effects upon both clientele and work setting markedly affect the manner in which veterinarians perform their roles as professionals. The office-based small animal practice, with its highly supportive and deferential clientele, serves to reinforce the professional mystique of the practitioner, thereby promoting professional autonomy and self-regulation. By contrast, large animal practice, with its numerous farm visits and its often unsupportive and critical clientele, inhibits professional autonomy and self-regulation by the large animal practitioner.
