- Abstract
In the past decade, one of the major challenges of particle physics has been to gain an in-depth understanding of the role of quark flavor. In this time frame, measurements and the theoretical interpretation of their results have advanced tremendously. A much broader understanding of flavor particles has been achieved; apart from their masses and quantum numbers, there now exist detailed measurements of the characteristics of their interactions allowing stringent tests of Standard Model predictions. Among the most interesting phenomena of flavor physics is the violation of the CP symmetry that has been subtle and difficult to explore. In the past, observations of CP violation were confined to neutral K mesons, but since the early 1990s, a large number of CP-violating processes have been studied in detail in neutral B mesons. In parallel, measurements of the couplings of the heavy quarks and the dynamics for their decays in large samples of K, D, and B mesons have been greatly improved in accuracy and the results are being used as probes in the search for deviations from the Standard Model. In the near future, there will be a transition from the current to a new generation of experiments; thus a review of the status of quark flavor physics is timely. This report is the result of the work of physicists attending the 5th CKM workshop, hosted by the University of Rome "La Sapienza", September 9-13, 2008. It summarizes the results of the current generation of experiments that are about to be completed and it confronts these results with the theoretical understanding of the field which has greatly improved in the past decade. 1 The effect of an intravenous bolus of labetalol (0.6-1.6 mg/kg body weight) on central and peripheral haemodynamics was studied in nine subjects with essential hypertension and in eleven subjects with chronic renal disease and hypertension. 2 The BP reduction amounting to 20/13 mmHg was entirely due to the lowering of the total peripheral vascular resistance. This also included the vascular resistance in the muscles. 3 This peripheral vasodilatation was not counteracted by a reflex increase of the cardiac output. 4 The reflex tachycardia and overshoot of BP in Valsalva's manoeuvre were largely abolished. 5 Central and peripheral venous BPs, vascular volume of the forearm and venous distensibility did not show any significant change after treatment with labetalol. 6 In spite of the lowering of the vascular resistance of the forearm by labetalol, forearm blood flow was not significantly affected due to the parallel decrease in the perfusion pressure. 7 Plasma renin activity fell after labetalol in all instances. - Abstract
1. Central and peripheral haemodynamics, circulating blood volume and plasma renin activity (PRA) were investigated under resting conditions in 97 patients with chronic nonuraemic renal parenchymatous disease and without anaemia. For comparison a group of 17 healthy subjects was used. 2. An initial abnormality appeared in 12 out of 32 normotensive renal patients. It consisted of a markedly increased circulating blood volume, raised cardiac output, low total peripheral and forearm vascular resistance, hyperfusion of the forearm and increased venous distensibility. PRA was slightly (but insignificantly) higher in these hyperkinetic subjects with relaxed peripheral vessels than in the other 20 normotensive renal patients who did not differ haemodynamically from the control subjects. 3. Fifteen out of 47 renal patients with a mild or moderate hypertension (stage I–II WHO) were hyperkinetic. However, in these there was no compensatory vasodilatation in response to the high cardiac output: forearm blood flow was normal and venous distensibility below that of the control subjects. Blood volume was normal. Plasma renin activity (PRA) was the same as in the normotensive renal patients. 4. The difference between stage I–II and stage III was due entirely to a rise in total peripheral vascular resistance. 5. A re-examination of these patients 2-8 years after they had been first studied revealed that 11 out of the 12 originally hyperkinetic normotensive renal patients were now hypertensive compared with only one-half of the originally normokinetic normotensive renal subjects. 6. It is concluded that an inability of the diseased kidney to control volume homoeostasis leads to hypervolaemia, which raises cardiac output in the renal patients whilst still normotensive. As long as the arterioles adjust to the high output and the capacitance system to the high volume, blood pressure remains normal. When this adaptation of the periphery ceases, blood pressure rises, normalizing (possibly through a pressure diuresis) blood volume. PRA does not correlate with any of these changes and only in advanced renal hypertension may its rise partly contribute to the maintenance of high blood pressure without being its cause.

1. The ouabain-sensitive 42K+ flux from an artificial medium into erythrocytes was measured in 29 control subjects, 66 patients with chronic parenchymatous renal disease and in 32 subjects with primary hypertension. 2. The ouabain-sensitive 42K+ influx was reduced in subjects with chronic renal disease by about 20%, even when they were normotensive. The reduction in these patients was greater than that in patients with essential hypertension. 3. The changes in 42K+ influx and Na+ content with a decrease in the 42K+ influx/Na+ content ratio suggest an inhibition of the Na+ pump in the patients with chronic renal disease. 4. The inhibition of the Na+ pump may be secondary to the hypervolaemia which we suggest is the initial event leading to renal hypertension.

THE EFFECT of household washing products on the skin is a subject of importance and concern not only to the housewife but to the physician and the manufacturer as well.In recent years there has been in this country a decided trend toward the synthetic detergent products for household use. The amount used has increased from less than 1 lb. (0.5 kg.) per person, in 1942, to almost 10 lb. (4.5 kg.) per person, in 1951.1 Almost two-thirds of the package household washing products sold today are synthetic detergents. This great increase in the use of synthetic detergents since World War II has been due largely to the introduction of all-purpose synthetic detergents. The all-purpose synthetic products are analogous to the all-purpose soaps, in that they contain certain builders, mostly inorganic phosphates, in addition to the active synthetic detergent to make them clean better.Because of

The Belle II Theory Interface Platform (B2TiP) was created as a physics prospects working group of the Belle II collaboration in June 2014. It offered a platform where theorists and experimentalists could work together to elucidate the potential impacts of the Belle II program, which includes a wide scope of physics topics: B physics, charm, τ , quarkonium physics, electroweak precision measurements, and dark sector searches. It is composed of nine working groups (WGs), which are coordinated by teams of theory and experiment conveners: WG1, Semileptonic and leptonic B Decays; WG2, Radiative and Electroweak Penguins; WG3, φ1 and φ2 (Time-Dependent CP Violation) Measurements; WG4, φ3 Measurement; WG5, Charmless Hadronic B Decay; WG6, Charm; WG7, Quarkonium(-like); WG8, τ and Low-Multiplicity Processes; WG9, New Physics. We organized workshops twice a year from 2014 until 2016, which moved from KEK in Japan to Europe and the Americas, gathering experts in the respective fields for discussions with Belle II members. One of the goals for B2TiP was to propose so-called “golden and silver channels”: we asked each working group to choose, among numerous possible measurements, those that would have the highest potential impact and to focus on them for the writeup. Theorists scrutinized the role of those measurements in terms of understanding the theory behind them, and estimated the theoretical uncertainties now achievable as well as prospects for the future. For flavor physics, having tight control of hadronic uncertainties is one of the most crucial aspects in the field, and this is considered an important criterion in determining the golden or silver channels. Experimentalists, on the other hand, investigated the expected improvements with data from Belle II. For the channels where the errors are dominated by statistical uncertainties, or where systematic errors are reducible, the errors can decrease rapidly as more data becomes available. The impact of the upgraded performance from Belle II is a crucial element in reducing the uncertainties: we therefore include the latest available studies of the detector efficiency using Monte Carlo simulated events.We list the golden and silver channel table in the introductory chapter, as a guide for the chapters that follow. This book is not a collection of reports based on talks given at the workshops. The working group conveners endeavored to construct a coherent document that can be used by Belle II collaborators, and others in the field of flavor physics, as a reference. Two books of a similar type have been produced in the past: The BaBar Book [1] and The Physics of the B Factories [2]. In order to avoid too much repetition with respect to those references, we refer to them wherever possible for introductory material. We would like to thank the section editors and contributing authors for the many stimulating discussions and their tremendous efforts in bringing the book together.

Progress of theoretical and experimental physics 2020(2), 029201 (2020). doi:10.1093/ptep/ptaa008, We present the physics program of the Belle II experiment, located on the intensity frontier SuperKEKB e+e- collider. Belle II collected its first collisions in 2018, and is expected to operate for the next decade. It is anticipated to collect 50/ab of collision data over its lifetime. This book is the outcome of a joint effort of Belle II collaborators and theorists through the Belle II theory interface platform (B2TiP), an effort that commenced in 2014. The aim of B2TiP was to elucidate the potential impacts of the Belle II program, which includes a wide scope of physics topics: B physics, charm, tau, quarkonium, electroweak precision measurements and dark sector searches. It is composed of nine working groups (WGs), which are coordinated by teams of theorist and experimentalists conveners: Semileptonic and leptonic B decays, Radiative and Electroweak penguins, phi_1 and phi_2 (time-dependent CP violation) measurements, phi_3 measurements, Charmless hadronic B decay, Charm, Quarkonium(like), tau and low-multiplicity processes, new physics and global fit analyses. This book highlights 'golden- and silver-channels', i.e. those that would have the highest potential impact in the field. Theorists scrutinised the role of those measurements and estimated the respective theoretical uncertainties, achievable now as well as prospects for the future.
