Sediment-hosted Pb-Zn deposits can be divided into two major subtypes. The first subtype is elastic-dominated lead-zinc (CD Pb-Zn) ores, which are hosted in shale, sandstone, siltstone, or mixed clastic rocks, or occur as cathonate replacement, within a CD sedimentary rock sequence. This subtype includes deposits that have been traditionally referred to as sedimentary exhalative (SEDEX) deposits. The CD Pb-Zn deposits occur in passive margins, back-arcs and continental rifts, and sag basins, which are tectonic settings that, in some cases, are transitional into one another. The second subtype of sediment-hosted Pb-Zn deposits is the Mississippi Valley-type (MVT Pb-Zn) that occurs in platform carbonate sequences, typically in passive-margin tectonic settings. Considering that the redox state of sulfur is one of the major controls on the extraction, transport, and deposition of Pb and Zn at shallow crustal sites, sediment-hosted Pb-Zn ores can be considered a special rock type that recorded the oxygenation of Earth's hydrosphere. The emergence of CD and MVT deposits in the rock record between 2.02 Ga, the age of the earliest known deposit of these ores, and 1.85 to 1.58 Ga, a major period of CD Pb-Zn mineralization in Australia and India, corresponds to a time after the Great Oxygenation Event that occurred at ca 2.4 to 1.8 Ga. Contributing to the abundance of CD deposits at ca 1.85 to 1.58 Ga was the following: (1) enhanced oxidation of sulfides in the crust that provided sulfate to the hydrosphere and Pb and Zn to sediments; (2) development of major redox and compositional gradients in the oceans; (3) first formation of significant sulfate-bearing evaporites: (4) formation of red beds and oxidized aquifers, possibly containing easily extractable Pb and Zn; (5) evolution of sulfate-reducing bacteria; and (6) formation of large and long-lived basins on stable cratons. Although MVT and CD deposits appeared for the first time in Earth history at 2.02 Ga, only CD deposits were important repositories for Pb and Zn in sediments between the Great Oxygenation Event, until after the second oxidation of the atmosphere in the late Neoproterozic. Increased oxygenation of the oceans following the second oxidation event led to an abundance of evaporites, resulting oxidized brines, and a dramatic increase in the volume of coarse-grained and permeable carbonates of the Paleozoic carbonate platforms, which host many of the great MVT deposits. The MVT deposits reached their maximum abundance during the final assembly of Pangea from Devonian into the Carboniferous. This was also a time for important CD mineral deposit formation along passive margins in evaporative belts of Pangea. Following the breakup of Pangea, a new era of MVT ores began with the onset of the assembly of the Neosupercontinent. A significant limitation on interpreting the secular distribution of the deposits is that there is no way to quantitatively evaluate the removal of deposits from the rock record through tectonic recycling. Considering that most of the sedimentary rock record has been recycled, most sediment-hosted Pb-Zn deposits probably have also been destroyed by subduction and erosion, or modified by metamorphism and tectonism, so that they are no longer recognizable. Thus, the uneven secular distribution of sediment-hosted Pb-Zn deposits reflects the genesis of these deposits, linked to Earth's evolving tectonic and geochemical systems, as well as an unknown amount of recycling of the sedimentary rock record. During the interval between continental collision in the Devonian and continental breakup in the Triassic the northern Appalachians became the site of a wide plate boundary zone of dominantly right-lateral strike slip. As is typical of intracontinental transforms, tectonism was both diachronous and rapidly variable along strike through regimes of 'pure' strike slip, transpressional deformation, and rapid subsidence of extensional basins. Up to 9 km of mainly nonmarine, clastic sediments accumulated in these local depocenters, which subsided episodically in two stages: (1) an initial phase of stretching and thinning of the lithosphere, when subsidence was rapid, fault controlled, and often accompanied by volcanism and (2) a subsequent phase of gradual thermal subsidence, during which the depositional basins expanded to bury the earlier border faults and progressively younger sedimentary units onlapped basement. The largest depocenter, the Magdalen Basin, opened as a pull-apart between strike slip faults in Newfoundland and New Brunswick from late Devonian to early Carboniferous. Subsequent thermal subsidence affected a large area during medial and late Carboniferous, a phenomenon that is well recorded to the north and west, where no later tectonism occurred. In areas to the south and east of the basin, strike slip on other faults continued into the time of thermal subsidence, introducing complications such as localized transpressional deformation and rapid subsidence in smaller pull-aparts. The field of mineral evolution--a merger of mineralogy and Earth history--coalesced in 2008 with the first of several global syntheses by Robert Hazen and coworkers in the American Mineralogist. They showed that the cumulative abundance of mineral species has a stepwise trend with first appearances tied to various transitions in Earth history such as the end of planetary accretion at ca. 4.55 Ga and the onset of bio-mediated mineralogy at ca. >2.5 Ga. A global age distribution is best established for zircon. Observed abundance of zircon fluctuates through more than an order of magnitude during successive supercontinent cycles. The pulse of the Earth is also recorded, albeit imperfectly, by the 87Sr/86Sr composition of marine biogenic calcite; the Sr-isotopic ratio of this mineral reflects the balance of inputs of primitive strontium at mid-ocean ridges and evolved strontium that drains off the continents. A global mineral evolution database, currently in the works, will greatly facilitate the compilation and analysis of extant data and the expansion of research in mineralogy outside its traditional bounds and into more interdisciplinary realms. New U-Pb and 40Ar/39Ar ages integrated with geologic mapping and observations across the western Alaska Range constrain the distribution and tectonic setting of Cretaceous to Oligocene magmatism along an evolving accretionary plate margin in south-central Alaska. These rocks were emplaced across basement domains that include Neoproterozoic to Jurassic carbonate and siliciclastic strata of the Farewell terrane, Triassic and Jurassic plutonic and volcanic rocks of the Peninsular terrane, and Jurassic and Cretaceous siliciclastic strata of the Kahiltna assemblage. Plutonic rocks of different ages also host economic mineralization including intrusion-related Au, porphyry Cu-Mo-Au, polymetallic veins and skarns, and peralkaline intrusion-related rare-earth elements. The oldest intrusive suites were emplaced ca. 104-80 Ma into the Peninsular terrane only prior to final accretion. Deformation of the northern Kahiltna succession and underlying Farewell terrane occurred at ca. 97 Ma, and more widespread deformation ca. 80 Ma involved south-vergent folding and thrusting of the Kahiltna assemblage that records collisional accretion of the Peninsular-Wrangellia terrane and juxtaposition of sediment wedges formed on the inboard and outboard terranes. More widespread magmatism ca. 75-55 Ma occurred in two general pulses, each having distinct styles of localized deformation. Circa 75-65 Ma plutons were emplaced in a transpressional setting and stitch the accreted Peninsular and Wrangellia terranes to the Farewell terrane. Circa 65-55 Ma magmatism occurred across the entire range and extends for more than 200 km inboard from the inferred position of the continental margin. The Paleocene plutonic suite generally reflects shallower emplacement depths relative to older suites and is associated with more abundant andesitic to rhyolitic volcanic rocks. Deformation ca. 58-56 Ma was concentrated along two high-strain zones, the most prominent of which is 1 km wide, strikes east-northeast, and accommodated dextral oblique motion. Emplacement of widespread intermediate to mafic dikes ca. 59-51 Ma occurred before a notable magmatic lull from ca. 51-44 Ma reflecting a late Paleocene to early Eocene slab window. Magmatism resumed ca. 44 Ma, recording the transition from slab window to renewed subduction that formed the Aleutian-Meshik arc to the southwest. In the western Alaska Range, Eocene magmatism included emplacement of the elongate north-south Merrill Pass pluton and large volumes of ca. 44-37 Ma andesitic flows, tuffs, and lahar deposits. Finally, a latest Eocene to Oligocene magmatic pulse involved emplacement of a compositionally variable but spatially concentrated suite of magmas ranging from gabbro to peralkaline granite ca. 35-26 Ma, followed by waning magmatism that coincided with initiation of Yakutat shallow-slab subduction. Cretaceous to Oligocene magmatism throughout the western Alaska Range collectively records terrane accretion, translation, and integration together with evolving subduction dynamics that have shaped the southern Alaska margin since the middle Mesozoic.
