Since 1998, the Italian Antarctic Programme has been funding space geodetic activities based on the use of episodic and permanent global positioning system (GPS) observations. As well as their exploitation in geodynamics, these data can be used to sense the atmosphere and to retrieve and monitor its water vapor content and variations. The surface pressure p and temperature Ts at the GPS tracking sites are necessary to compute the zenith hydrostatic delay (ZHD), and consequently, the precipitable water. At sites where no surface information is recorded, the p and Ts values can be retrieved from, e.g., global numerical weather prediction models. Alternatively, the site-specific ZHD values can be computed by interpolation of the ZHD values provided in a grid model (2.5° × 2.0°). We have processed the data series of the permanent GPS site TNB1 (Mario Zucchelli Station, Antarctica) from 1998 to 2010, with the purpose of comparing the use of grid ZHD values as an alternative to the use of real surface records. With these approaches, we estimate almost 7 × 104 hourly values of precipitable water over 13 years, and we find discrepancies that vary between 1.8 (±0.2) mm in summer and 3.3 (±0.5) mm in winter. In addition, the discrepancies of the two solutions show a clear seasonal dependency. Radiosounding measurements were used to derive an independent series of precipitable water. These agree better with the GPS precipitable water derived from real surface data. However, the GPS precipitable water time series is dry biased, as it is ca. 77% of the total moisture measured by the radiosoundings. Both the GPS and radiosounding observations are processed through the most up-to-date strategies, to reduce known systematic errors.

Diurnal variations in total ozone column were observed to exceed 40 DU during the QAARC campaign of late spring 2009 held at the Ny-Alesund Arctic station in Svalbard. They were correlated to corresponding oscillations of surface UV-B irradiance, assuming that the strong dependence between these two variables ensures the reliability of registered total ozone oscillations. To make the comparison, an approach is proposed that allows the retrieval of diurnal variability in UV-B irradiance due to total ozone column changes, for application to the data collected during the campaign. The UV irradiance features observed with the reference spectroradiometer over a 7-day period were analyzed together with the corresponding ozone column data-sets, simultaneously obtained using two different devices. Power curves were found to provide the best-fit solutions for the retrieved UV-B variations, examined as a function of total ozone variations. Such approximations are characterized by regression coefficients of about − 0.94 and by the exponent named in earlier studies as the radiation amplification factor (RAF), which was found to vary between 0.79 and 2.49. These RAF evaluations are in good agreement with previous estimates derived from both field measurements and model evaluations, which confirm the complete dependability of the short-term variations in the ozone column measured at Ny-Alesund.

The features of solar UV irradiance measured at the Italian-French Antarctic Plateau station, Concordia, during the springs of 2008 and 2009 are presented and discussed. In order to study the impact of the large springtime variations in total ozone column on the fraction of ultraviolet B (UV-B) irradiance (fromc.290–315 nm) reaching the Earth surface, irradiance datasets corresponding to fixed solar zenith angles (SZAs = 65°, 75° and 85°) are correlated to the daily ozone column provided by different instruments. For these SZAs the radiation amplification factor varied from 1.58–1.94 at 306 nm and from 0.68–0.88 at 314 nm. The ultraviolet index reached a maximum level of 8 in the summer, corresponding to the typical average summer value for mid latitude sites. The solar irradiance pertaining to the ultraviolet A (UV-A, 315–400 nm) spectral band was found to depend closely on variations of atmospheric transmittance characteristics as reported by previous studies. Model simulations of UV-B irradiance showed a good agreement with field measurements at 65° and 75° SZAs. For SZA = 85° the ozone vertical distribution significantly impacted model estimations. Sensitivity analysis performed by hypothetically varying the ozone distribution revealed some features of the ozone profiles that occurred in the period studied here.

An approach is proposed to assess the periods of human skin exposure to solar ultraviolet-A (UV-A, 315–400 nm) irradiance in natural conditions that are able to yield doses found to trigger carcinogenesis in laboratory experiments. Weighting functions, adopted to perform such estimate are constructed, allowing for a comparison between environmental and laboratory doses. Furthermore, the impact of stratum corneum (SC) thickness on the studied environmental doses was investigated. Based on laboratory studies, it was found that exposure periods of less than a month, at mid-latitudes, could provide irradiance doses capable of causing tumor formation. The duration of these exposure periods closely depends on the exposure regime, atmospheric conditions and SC thickness. It is believed that the presented evaluations could provide a useful preliminary estimation of the risk associated with environmental UV-A exposure prior to the formulation of the corresponding action spectra and determination of the threshold doses.

The time-patterns of ground-level solar irradiance during the solar eclipse of 29 March, 2006, were observed at three Italian stations (Lampedusa, Mt. Cimone and Bologna) using different radiometric techniques. The global irradiance measured at the sites was found to reach the minimum at times not coinciding with those predicted by radiative transfer model evaluations, with ahead or lag times depending on the optical characteristics of the surface–atmosphere system in the areas surrounding of the stations. This different behaviour has been mainly attributed to the different influence of the environmental conditions on the diffuse radiance component measured at the observation sites. The present results indicate that the incoming diffuse radiance recorded at the three stations was appreciably affected by contributions arising from extended regions of about 30–100 km range from the stations. Such an explanation agrees very well with the theoretical evaluations obtained in earlier studies. The surrounding environmental areas of impact at ultraviolet wavelengths have been found to be wider than those in the visible and near-infrared spectral ranges.

The first Arctic intercomparison of three solar ultraviolet (UV) spectroradiometers and two multifilter radiometers was held in May and June 2009 at Ny-Alesund, Svalbard, Norway. The transportable reference spectroradiometer QASUME acted as reference instrument for this intercomparison. The measurement period extended over eleven days, comprising clear sky and overcast weather conditions. Due to the high latitude, measurements could be performed throughout the day during this period. The intercomparison demonstrated that the solar UV measurements from all instruments agreed to within +/-15% during the whole measurement period, while the spectroradiometer from the Alfred-Wegener Institute agreed to better than +/-5%. This intercomparison has demonstrated that solar UV measurements can be performed reliably in the high-latitude Arctic environment with uncertainties comparable to mid-latitude sites.

[1] A large set of radiosoundings was analyzed to study the dependence of Rayleigh-scattering optical depth (ROD) on pressure and temperature features of the polar clear-sky atmosphere. This set consists of 1320 radiosoundings, launched throughout the year at six Arctic sites, and of 940 radiosoundings launched at five Antarctic sites. The vertical profiles of pressure, temperature, and relative humidity given by these radiosoundings were corrected for lag errors and dry biases and then completed up to 120 km altitude, using COSPAR International Reference Atmosphere (CIRA) monthly vertical profiles of pressure and temperature, water vapor mixing ratio data derived from various satellite observations, and standard CO2 vertical profile relative to 2007, when the ground-level concentration was 380 ppmv. Calculations of the volume Rayleigh-scattering coefficient were made for all the radiosoundings to study its seasonal variations with height due to pressure and temperature changes occurring in the troposphere and stratosphere. It was found that the surface-level pressure and temperature conditions can account to a large extent for these seasonal effects. Therefore, average spectral evaluations of ROD were made at 88 selected wavelengths from 0.20 to 4.0 μm for all the radiosoundings, subdivided into eight latitude/altitude site classes, representing 70°N, 75°N, 80°N, 70°S, 75°S, 80°S, and 90°S latitudes, for which the average ground values of air pressure pa and air temperature Ta were defined. The dependence of ROD on the daily ground-level values of air pressure po and air temperature To measured at each site can be accounted for by using an algorithm in which the pressure dependence is given with good approximation by ratio (po/pa), and the temperature linear dependence is expressed by the difference (Ta − To) multiplied by a spectral slope coefficient k(λ) which varies by site classification. This algorithm was estimated to provide values of ROD with accuracy within ±0.5% at the six sea-level Arctic sites, ±0.5% at the three Antarctic coastal sites, and ±0.7% at the two Antarctic Plateau sites (Dome C and South Pole). When used to analyze the Sun photometer measurements, the present evaluations of ROD are estimated to provide aerosol optical depth values at visible wavelengths with relative errors of 1%–2% at the Arctic sites, 1%–4% at the coastal Antarctic sites, and 3%–13% at the Antarctic Plateau sites, for background aerosol extinction conditions.

Many investigators have found the 5–7% trend, related with 27-day and 11-year solar activity cycles by means of the analyses of the Total Ozone Content (TOC) data. In this paper we have investigated the possible TOC variations at the time of extremely high solar activity when F10,7 is about 350. Such unobserved values could be reached (in the future or in the past) at the time of supercenturial solar cycle. From the climatic point of view this high activity could influence the climate through the stratospheric ozone. For this purpose we have constructed a model of solar flux in the region 1216–3300 A, based on the ratio of Lα.(max/min) equal to 2 given by Lean, 1982 (ref. in WMO, 1985). Mainly experimental data has been used. The variation of stratospheric ozone has been calculated by means of a stationary photochemical model. The maximal value of F10 7 has been taken as 350. The main results from the modelling are: 1) 5% increase of TOC from minimum to maximum solar activity (F10,7 100–200) is due basically to the photochemistry; 2) At F10,7 equal to 350, the calculated photochemical increase of TOC is about 9%; 3) In all ’diapason of data for F10,7 (from 100 to 350) the increase of TOC follows the law ∆TOC~ (∆ F200)1/2, where ∆ F200 is the flux of wavelength of 2000 A; 4) The existing reverse negative interrelations between the TOC and temperature could only decrease the ozone growth. The main conclusion is that the extremely high solar activity cannot dramatically influence the behavior of stratospheric ozone and is not compatible with anthropogenious factors.
