Work carried out under this grant led to fundamental discoveries and over one hundred publications in the scientific literature. Fundamental developments in instrumentation were made including all the instrumentation on the EUVE satellite, the invention of a whole new type of grazing instrument spectrometer and the development of fundamentally new photon counting detectors including the Wedge and Strip used on EUVE and many other missions and the Time Delay detector used on OREFUS and FUSE. The Wedge and Strip and Time Delay detectors were developed under this grant for less than two million dollars and have been used in numerous missions most recently for the FUSE mission. In addition, a fundamentally new type of diffuse spectrometer has been developed under this grant which has been used in instrumentation on the MMSAT spacecraft and the Lewis spacecraft. Plans are underway to use this instrumentation on several other missions as well.

We present new far-ultraviolet (1400-1800 A) data concerning a Galactic cirrus cloud G251.2+73.3 near the north Galactic pole obtained with the space-borne imaging telescope FAUST (Far Ultraviolet Space Telescope). We obtain a good correlation between the far-ultraviolet (FUV) and IRAS 100 micrometers surface brightnesses, their relation being I(sub FUV) = (128 +/- 3) I(sub 100 micrometers) - (264 +/- 9), where the I(sub FUV) flux is given in units of photon/s/sq cm/A/sr and I(sub 100 micrometers) in MJy/sr. Using uvbyH-beta photometry, we get a distance of 120 pc and a visual extinction in the center of the cloud of 0.39 mag corresponding to an extinction of 1.0 mag at 1565 A. We have performed a multiple scattering calculation for the scattered light using the Monte Carlo method. These calculations provide restrictions on the FUV scattering properties of the interstellar dust.

The Orbiting and Retrievable Far and Extreme UV Spectrometer (ORFEUS) telescope has observed AM Her in its high optical state at high spectral resolution in the 912-1176 A band. Spectra at two phases show O VI emission lines with a broad and narrow component structure similar to that of the optical emission lines. We find that the O VI lines are optically thick, and that the densities in the broad- and narrow-component regions differ by a factor of 100. The most puzzling aspect of the observations is the continuum, which is softer than expected, but does not show definite Lyman absorption lines. We discuss the implications for the 'soft X-ray excess' of AM Her stars.

We list the photometric measurements of point sources made by the Far Ultraviolet Space Telescope (FAUST) when it flew on the ATLAS-1 space shuttle mission. The list contains 4698 Galactic and extragalactic objects detected in 22 wide-field images of the sky. At the locations surveyed, this catalog reaches a limiting magnitude approximately a factor of 10 fainter than the previous UV all-sky survey, TDl. The catalog limit is approximately 1 x 10(exp -14) ergs A sq cm/s, although it is not complete to this level. We list for each object the position, FUV flux, the error in flux, and where possible an identification from catalogs of nearby stars and galaxies. These catalogs include the Michigan HD (MHD) and HD, SAO, the HIPPARCOS Input Catalog, the Position and Proper Motion Catalog, the TD1 Catalog, the McCook and Sion Catalog of white dwarfs, and the RC3 Catalog of Galaxies. We identify 2239 FAUST sources with objects in the stellar catalogs and 172 with galaxies in the RC3 catalog. We estimate the number of sources with incorrect identifications to be less than 2%.

We test the model of the Galactic point source sky recently extended to the far-ultraviolet by Cohen (1994) against the set of Galactic far-ultraviolet point sources detected by the Far Ultraviolet Space Telescope (FAUST) experiment. We find excellent agreement between the predicted (log N, log S) and the observed source counts for a range of Galactic directions observed by Faust. At low galactic latitudes, we can directly infer the amount of interstellar extinction in a given direction associated with local molecular complexes, based on comparison of model calculations and FAUST star counts. The model can also be used to predict the statistical stellar content of any field. We compare the model predcitions with the observations of Brosch et al. (1994), who have spectroscopically studied an optically identified complete sample of FAUST objects in a region near the north Galactic pole. We have used the model to determine that the contribution of far-ultraviolet stars fainter than 6 x 10(exp -14) ergs/s/sq cm/A (the FAUST detection limit) is less than 1% of the diffuse sky brightness, and less than about 4% of the total point source flux.

We provide a new estimate of the effective absorption cross section of the interstellar medium at extreme ultraviolet wavelengths. The cross section for neutral helium is discussed in detail. Two spectral features of interstellar neutral helium, the 504 A ionization edge and the autoionization resonance feature at 206 A, are detectable with existing instrumentation. Measurements of the autoionization feature in continuum sources will provide a direct estimate of the intervening neutral helium column; in many cases this will be the only method to obtain this parameter. Although continuum metal opacities are negligible at wavelengths greater than 50 A we find that metal line features should be detectable in continuum sources with high signal to noise observations. A selection of some of the most prominent lines expected is provided.

During its all-sky survey, the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) satellite observed the Moon several times at first and last quarters, and once immediately following the Dec. 10 1992 lunar eclipse. We present here a portion of this data, in the form of extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) images of the Moon and derived geometric albedos. From the EUVE photometer data we obtain average geometric albedos of 0.15% (+/- 0.03%), 3.1% (+/- 0.3%), and 3.5% (+/- 0.3%), over wavelength intervals of 150-240 A, 400-580 A, and 550-650 A, respectively. An upper limit geometric albedo of 0.13% is obtained for the wavelength interval 75-180 A. Also, using previously published ROSAT data, we estimate a lunar geometric albedo of 0.014% (+/- 0.002%) over the wavelength interval 50-80 A. These EUV albedos (and previously published far-ultraviolet albedos) are well fit by the scaled reflectivities of SiO2 and Al2O3. Over the wavelength ranges of the EUVE photometers, the observed brightness of the Moon seems to be largely consistent with reflected sunlight rather than X-ray fluorescence. Since the L- and M-shell fluorescence signal is expected to be carried by only small number of emission lines, however, it will require EUV observations of higher spectral resolution (approximately less than 5 A) to determine their exact contribution, if any, to the lunar EUV spectrum.

We present the extreme ultraviolet (75-110 A) spectrum of the BL Lac object PKS 2155-304, the first spectrum of an extragalactic source obtained with the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE). The spectrum shows a generally smooth continuum, which can be modeled by a single power law plus interstellar absorption, and possibly an absorption feature at approximately 80 A. The best fit to the data suggests that the EUV spectrum can be interpreted as a simple extrapolation of the X-ray continuum, with an energy index alpha is approximately = 1.6; however, shallower or steeper power laws with indices between -0.4 and 2.7 cannot be ruled out by the existing EUV data alone. The data provide strong constraints on the interstellar neutral H and He along the line of sight. Using a column density of 1.36 x 10(exp 20)/sq cm for the Galactic neutral hydrogen along the PKS 2155-304 line of sight, the neutral helium column density is constrained to be 9%-10% of the hydrogen amount.

The RS CVn binary V711 Tauri was observed by the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer satellite (EUVE) twice during the latter half of 1992, for periods lasting several days. Light curves for the waveband 60-180 A derived from the all-sky survey scanning in August and from a pointed calibration observation made in October both exhibit a modulation of about 40%. The modulation in both data sets is very similar, with minimum flux occurring near orbital phase phi = 0.5. Analysis using a two-temperature optically thin plasma emission model reveals that most of the detected extreme ultraviolet (EUV) flux emanates from hot (approximately 10(exp 7) K) coronal plasma. The modulation is probably mostly due to either flare-like activity or to rotational occultation of a long-lived, compact, and especially bright coronal structure on the more active star of the system. The phased data support the latter hypothesis. This coronal structure is then likely to be associated with the presistent spot patterns seen on V711 Tau when using Doppler and photometric surface imaging techniques. Comparison with contemporaneous Stroemgren b-band photometry indicates that the optical minimum light leads the EUV maximum light by 90 deg in phase.

The first comprehensive sky survey of the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectral range performed by the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) has uncovered a handful of very bright sources at wavelengths longer than the He I 504 A photoionization edge. Among these objects are four white dwarfs with exceptionally low interstellar medium (ISM) column densities along the line of sight. Analysis of EUV photometry of the He-rich DO white dwarf MCT 0501-2858 and the H-rich DA white dwarf MCT 0455-2812 along one line of sight and of the DA white dwarfs HZ 43 and GD 153 near the north Galactic pole indicates that the overall minimum column density of the neutral material centered on the Sun is N(H I) = 0.5-1.0 x 10(exp 18)/sq cm. In the case of MCT 0501-2858, EUV photometric measurements provide a clear constraint to the effective temperature (60,000-70,000 K). Given these neutral hydrogen columns, the actual contribution to the density of neutral species from the immediate solar environment (the 'local fluff') would only cover a distance of approximately equals 2-3 pc (assuming an average density n(H I) = 0.1/cu cm) leaving these lines of sight almost entirely within the hot phase of the ISM. A preliminary examination of the complete EUVE long-wavelength survey indicates that these lines of sight are exceptional and set a minimum column density in the solar environment.

We report observations of the extreme ultraviolet spectrum of the hot degenerate star GD 246 obtained with the EUVE. Our initial attempt at modeling the photospheric emission from the white dwarf reveals a relatively uncontaminated pure H spectrum in the range above 200 A, allowing a study of interstellar continuum absorption features in the line of sight of GD 246. Modeling of the He I autoionization transition discussed by Rumph et al. (1993), and the EUV continuum using the white dwarf as a source of background radiation provides measurements of both neutral and, for the first time, singly ionized He column densities in the local ISM (LISM). We estimate the He ionization fraction He II/(He I + He II) at roughly 25 percent with a total He column of 1.40-1.65 x 10 exp 18/sq cm. We have measured and compared H I column densities from the saturated Ly-alpha ISM absorption in IUE high-dispersion spectroscopy and from EUV continuum absorption: the two measurements are in good agreement with a total H column of 1.2-1.6 x 10 exp 19/sq cm. We discuss some implications for the nature of the LISM, particularly in the context of current models of the EUV radiation field.

The Far Ultraviolet Space Telescope ('FAUST') furnishes precise photometry for extended astronomical objects in the 1400-1800 A wavelength interval, and constitutes a part of the Atlas-1 mission. On several occasions during this flight, FAUST was turned toward the earth in order to obtain terrestrial nightglow, auroral and Shuttleglow emissions. It is found that auroral precipitation activity dominates in the high magnetic latitude; outside it, diffuse emission is seen to slowly vary over the nightside.

FAUST is a far ultraviolet (1400-1800 A) photon-counting imaging telescope featuring a wide field of view (7.6 deg) and a high sensitivity to extended emission features. During its flight as part of the ATLAS-1 payload aboard the STS-45 mission in March 1992, 19 deep-space nighttime viewing opportunities were utilized by FAUST. Here we report the observed fluxes and their time and space variations, and identify the signatures of postsunset airglow phenomena and Orbiter Vernier attitude control thruster firing events. We find that the Space Shuttle nighttime environment at 296 km altitude is often sufficiently dark to permit geophysical and astronomical UV observations down to levels on the order of 1000 photons/sq cm sr A sec, or 0.01 Rayleighs/A. We also find evidence for occasional geophysical fluxes of some tens or hundreds of Rayleighs in the upward-looking direction.
