64. Spectral observations of active region sources with RATAN-600 and WSRT

Abstract

We present spectral observations of neutral line and sunspot associated sources obtained with the RATAN-600 radio telescope and the WSRT in the wavelength range of 2 to 6 cm. Sources associated with large sunspots have flat spectra, while neutral line sources have very steep spectra. In the case of a large spot we estimated the magnetic field to be at least 2700 G at the base of the transition region and 1800 G in the low corona. We consider possible interpretations of the radio emission above the neutral lines. Gyroresonance emission at the fourth harmonic is inadequate, whereas emission from a small population of nonthermal electrons (total number 10 exp 30 to 10 exp 31) with a delta = 3 power law distribution seems to be sufficient.

Abstract

Unusual spectra with a significant decrease in circularly polarised emissions (Stokes parameter V ) in the middle part of the microwave range (6 - 12 GHz), sometimes with a change of the polarization sign, were revealed by observations with the radio telescope RATAN-600 in the microwave range 2 - 16 GHz. Such features can be explained by the presence of a hot region in the solar corona. The magnetic field strength of the hot region and the product of the relative gradient of the magnetic field on its thickness are defined.

Abstract

We analyzed the structure of the magnetic field in active regions at coronal altitudes, determined using multiwavelength observations of polarized radio emission in the microwave range at the radiotelescope RATAN-600. The observations were compared with the current-free magnetic field extrapolation of the photospheric field. It is shown that the measured magnetic field is always larger than the reconstructed field at the same height. The slopes of the tubes obtained by this method corresponds to the slopes obtained for the reconstructed field, although the degree of the slope differ significantly. The measured magnetic field structure is probably more complicated than the structure obtained by the reconstruction. Comparison of our measurements with previous measurements of radio astronomical heights at fixed frequencies showed good match.

Abstract

We present new observational data on the phenomena of extremely high activity on the Sun and in the heliosphere that took place in October-November 2003. A large variety of solar and heliospheric parameters give evidence that the interval under consideration is unique over the entire observation time. Based on these data, comparing them with similar situations in the past and using available theoretical concepts, we discuss possible cause-and-effect connections between the processes observed. The paper includes the first results and conclusions derived by the collaboration "Solar Extreme Events-2003" organized in Russia for detailed investigations of these events. As a result of our consideration, it is beyond question that the physical causes of solar and heliospheric phenomena in October-November 2003 are not exclusively local and do not belong only to the active regions and solar atmosphere above them. The energy reservoirs and driving forces of these processes have a more global nature. In general, they are hidden from an observer, since ultimately their sources lie in the subphotospheric layers of the Sun, where changes that are fast and difficult to predict can sometimes take place (and indeed they do). Solar flares can serve as sufficiently good tracers of these sudden changes and reconstructions on the Sun, although one can still find other diagnostic indicators among the parameters of magnetic fields, motions of matter, and emission characteristics.
