Abstract: Abstract The critical point of strongly interacting matter is searched for at the CERN SPS by the NA61/SHINE experiment in central $$^{40}$$ 40 Ar + $$^{45}$$ 45 Sc collisions at 13 A, 19 A, 30 A, 40 A, and 75 A GeV/c. The dependence of the second-order scaled factorial moments of proton multiplicity distributions on the number of subdivisions in transverse momentum space is measured. The intermittency analysis uses statistically independent data sets for every subdivision in transverse and cumulative-transverse momentum variables. The results obtained do not indicate the searched intermittent pattern. An upper limit on the fraction of correlated protons and the intermittency index is obtained based on a comparison with the Power-law Model.

52. Development and validation of a lifting‐line code associated with the vortex particle method software Dorothy

Abstract: Abstract This paper presents a lifting‐line implementation in the framework of a Lagrangian vortex particle method (LL‐VP). The novelty of the present implementation lies in the fluid particles properties definition and in the particles shedding process. In spite of mimicking a panel method, the LL‐VP needs some peculiar treatments described in the paper. The present implementation converges rapidly and efficiently during the shedding sub‐iteration process. This LL‐VP method shows good accuracy, even with moderate numbers of sections. Compared to its panel or vortex filaments counterparts, more frequently encountered in the literature, the present implementation inherently accounts for the diffusion term of the Navier‐Stokes equations, possibly with a turbulent viscosity model. Additionally, the present implementation can also account for more complex onset flows: upstream ambient turbulence and upstream turbine wakes. After validation on an analytical elliptic wing configuration, the model is tested on the Mexnext‐III wind turbine application, for three reduced velocities. Accurate results are obtained both on the analytical elliptic wing and on the New MEXICO rotor cases in comparison with other similar numerical models. A focus is made on the Mexnext‐III wake analysis. The numerical wake obtained with the present LL‐VP is close to other numerical and experimental results. Finally, a last configuration with three tidal turbines in interaction is considered based on an experimental campaign carried out at the IFREMER wave and current flume tank. Enhanced turbine‐wake interactions are highlighted, with favourable comparisons with the experiment. Hence, such turbine interactions in a farm are accessible with this LL‐VP implementation, be it wind or tidal energy field.

Abstract: Scedosporium spp. and Lomentospora prolificans are emerging non-Aspergillus filamentous fungi. The Scedosporiosis/lomentosporiosis Observational Study we previously conducted reported frequent fungal vascular involvement, including aortitis and peripheral arteritis. For this article, we reviewed 7 cases of Scedosporium spp. and L. prolificans arteritis from the Scedosporiosis/lomentosporiosis Observational Study and 13 cases from published literature. Underlying immunosuppression was reported in 70% (14/20) of case-patients, mainly those who had solid organ transplants (10/14). Osteoarticular localization of infection was observed in 50% (10/20) of cases; infections were frequently (7/10) contiguous with vascular infection sites. Scedosporium spp./Lomentospora prolificans infections were diagnosed in 9 of 20 patients ≈3 months after completing treatment for nonvascular scedosporiosis/lomentosporiosis. Aneurysms were found in 8/11 aortitis and 6/10 peripheral arteritis cases. Invasive fungal disease–related deaths were high (12/18 [67%]). The vascular tropism of Scedosporium spp. and L. prolificans indicates vascular imaging, such as computed tomography angiography, is needed to manage infections, especially for osteoarticular locations.

56. Global Sensitivity Analysis of a coupled multiphysics model to predict surface evolution in fusion plasma-surface interactions

Abstract: We construct a global sensitivity analysis framework for a coupled multiphysics model used to predict the changes in material properties and surface morphology of helium plasma-facing components in future fusion reactors. The model combines the particle dynamics simulator F-TRIDYN, that predicts the helium implantation profile, with the cluster dynamics simulator Xolotl, that predicts the growth and evolution of subsurface helium gas bubbles. In order to keep the sensitivity analysis tractable, we first construct a sparse, high-dimensional polynomial chaos expansion surrogate model for each output quantity of interest, which allows the efficient extraction of sensitivity information. The sensitivity analysis is performed for two problem settings: one for ITER-like conditions, and one that resembles conditions inside the PISCES-A linear plasma device. We present a systematic comparison of important parameters, for both F-TRIDYN and Xolotl in isolation as well as for the coupled model, and discuss the physical interpretation of these results.

Abstract: This paper reports measurements of two-pion Bose-Einstein (HBT) correlations in Be+Be collisions at a beam momentum of 150$A\,\mbox{GeV}/\textit{c}$ by the $\mbox{NA61/SHINE}$ experiment at the CERN SPS accelerator. The obtained momentum space correlation functions can be well described by a L\'evy distributed source model. The transverse mass dependence of the L\'evy source parameters is presented, and their possible theoretical interpretations are discussed. The results show that the L\'evy exponent $\alpha$ is approximately constant as a function of $m_{\rm{T}}$ , and far from both the Gaussian case of $\alpha = 2$ or the conjectured value at the critical endpoint, $\alpha = 0.5$. The radius scale parameter $R$ shows a slight decrease in $m_{\rm{T}}$, which can be explained as a signature of transverse flow. Finally, an approximately constant trend of the intercept parameter $\lambda$ as a function of $m_{\rm{T}}$ was observed, different from measurement results at RHIC.

58. Fast, Differentiable and Sparse Top-k: a Convex Analysis Perspective

Abstract: The top-k operator returns a sparse vector, where the non-zero values correspond to the k largest values of the input. Unfortunately, because it is a discontinuous function, it is difficult to incorporate in neural networks trained end-to-end with backpropagation. Recent works have considered differentiable relaxations, based either on regularization or perturbation techniques. However, to date, no approach is fully differentiable and sparse. In this paper, we propose new differentiable and sparse top-k operators. We view the top-k operator as a linear program over the permutahedron, the convex hull of permutations. We then introduce a p-norm regularization term to smooth out the operator, and show that its computation can be reduced to isotonic optimization. Our framework is significantly more general than the existing one and allows for example to express top-k operators that select values in magnitude. On the algorithmic side, in addition to pool adjacent violator (PAV) algorithms, we propose a new GPU/TPU-friendly Dykstra algorithm to solve isotonic optimization problems. 59. Weakly asymmetric facilitated exclusion process

Abstract: We consider the facilitated exclusion process, an interacting particle system on the integer line where particles hop to one of their left or right neighbouring site only when the other neighbouring site is occupied by a particle. A peculiarity of this system is that, starting from the step initial condition, the density profile develops a downward jump discontinuity around the position of the first particle, unlike other exclusion processes such as the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP). In the weakly asymmetric regime, we show that the field of particle positions around the jump discontinuity converges to the solution of the multiplicative noise stochastic heat equation (i.e. the exponential of a solution to the KPZ equation) on a half-line subject to Dirichlet boundary condition, with initial condition given by the derivative of a Dirac delta function. We prove this result by reformulating the problem in terms of ASEP on a half-line with a boundary reservoir, for which we extend known proofs of convergence to deal with Dirichlet boundary condition and the very singular type of initial condition that arises in our case.

Abstract: In this paper we describe the performance of a prototype of the High Angle Time Projection Chambers (HA-TPCs) that are being produced for the Near Detector (ND280) upgrade of the T2K experiment. The two HA-TPCs of ND280 will be instrumented with eight Encapsulated Resistive Anode Micromegas (ERAM) on each endplate, thus constituting in total 32 ERAMs. This innovative technique allows the detection of the charge emitted by ionization electrons over several pads, improving the determination of the track position. The TPC prototype has been equipped with the first ERAM module produced for T2K and with the HA-TPC readout electronics chain and it has been exposed to the DESY Test Beam in order to measure spatial and dE/dx resolution. In this paper we characterize the performances of the ERAM and, for the first time, we compare them with a newly developed simulation of the detector response. Spatial resolution better than 800 ${\mu \rm m}$ and dE/dx resolution better than 10% are observed for all the incident angles and for all the drift distances of interest. All the main features of the data are correctly reproduced by the simulation and these performances fully fulfill the requirements for the HA-TPCs of T2K.

Abstract: IntroductionWell-organized nasal-associated lymphoid tissue (NALT) has been identified in the pharyngeal and tubal tonsils of both adults and children, and diffuse NALT has been identified in the superior, middle and inferior turbinate regions of children. However, it is not clear how to target these NALT sites with aerosolized vaccines. We explored whether head position and/or angle and distance of device insertion could be used to target fluorescein aerosol to NALT sites in three-dimensional printed models of the intranasal airways of an 18- and a 5-year-old (yo).MethodsThree head positions (upright [Up], tilted back 45° [45] and supine [Su]), two angles of insertion (30° and 45°) and two distances of insertion (6 mm and 9 mm) were tested. Fluorescein aerosol was generated by an Aptar Pharma BiVax 200 µL intranasal atomizer. Percent fluorescein deposition was quantified in the anterior nose, the upper horizontal third of the model (superior turbinate region), middle third (middle turbinate), lower third (inferior turbinate and nasopharynx combined) and exit filter.ResultsMean percent deposition in both models was 45 > Su (p = 0.03).DiscussionThese results suggest that, in individuals with similar nasal airway dimensions as our models: 1) supine and upright head positions might be used to target delivery of aerosolized vaccines generated by the BiVax intranasal atomizer to NALT sites in the middle turbinate and the inferior turbinate and nasopharynx combined, respectively; 2) delivery to the middle turbinate may be higher in children ≤5-yo; and 3) deposition in the anterior nose may be higher in adults, for all head positions. Abstract: The Oligocene–Miocene transition witnessed great environmental and faunal changes, spanning from late Oligocene to early Miocene (MP28–MN3). Its drivers and consequences on mammals are, however, poorly understood. Rhinocerotoids are among the most affected taxa, reflected by great taxonomical and morphological changes. However, potential associated changes in ecology have not been explored. Here, we investigated the palaeoecology of 10 rhinocerotid species coming from 15 localities across Western Europe and ranging from MP28 to MN3. We explored evolutionary trends for diet, physiology and habitat via dental wear, hypoplasia, body mass and stable isotopy. All rhinocerotids studied were C3 feeders, whether browsing or mixed-feeding, but clear dietary differences were observed at some localities and between Oligocene and Miocene rhinocerotids. The prevalence of hypoplasia was low (less than 10%) to moderate (less than 20%), but there were great differences by loci, species and localities. Body mass covaried with hypoplasia prevalence, suggesting that larger species might be more susceptible to stresses and environmental changes. We reconstructed similar warm conditions at all localities except Gaimersheim, but found greater variations in precipitation. Indeed, a clear shift in δ13C values was noticed at the end of the Oligocene, consistent with climatic and vegetation changes reported at that time.

Abstract: The infectious pseudoaneurysm of the common carotid artery is a rare observation in children. We present a case of ruptured infectious common carotid aneurysm in a 14-year-old girl managed in the Democratic Republic of Congo. We performed an arterial reconstruction with a saphenous vein patch. Post-operative course was simple. The patient was discharged from the hospital at post-operative day 15. She was doing well and had returned to school. Rupture of an infectious pseudoaneurysm of the common carotid artery constitutes a serious, life-threatening accident. As we have shown in this case report, its management with successful results is indeed possible, even in a resource-limited environment.

Abstract: This paper presents multiplicity measurements of $K^0_{\textrm{S}}$, $\Lambda$, and $\bar{\Lambda}$ produced in 120 GeV/$c$ proton-carbon interactions. The measurements were made using data collected at the NA61/SHINE experiment during two different periods. Decays of these neutral hadrons impact the measured $\pi^+$, $\pi^-$, $p$ and $\bar{p}$ multiplicities in the 120 GeV/$c$ proton-carbon reaction, which are crucial inputs for long-baseline neutrino experiment predictions of neutrino beam flux. The double-differential multiplicities presented here will be used to more precisely measure charged-hadron multiplicities in this reaction, and to re-weight neutral hadron production in neutrino beam Monte Carlo simulations.

69. A note on the antisymmetry in the speed of a random walk in reversible dynamic random environment

Abstract: In this short note, we prove that $v(-\epsilon)=-v(\epsilon)$. Here, $v(\epsilon)$ is the speed of a one-dimensional random walk in a dynamic \emph{reversible} random environment, that jumps to the right (resp. to the left) with probability $1/2+\epsilon$ (resp. $1/2-\epsilon$) if it stands on an occupied site, and vice-versa on an empty site. We work in any setting where $v(\epsilon), v(-\epsilon)$ are well-defined, i.e. a weak LLN holds. The proof relies on a simple coupling argument that holds only in the discrete setting.

70. Sparsity-Constrained Optimal Transport

Abstract: Regularized optimal transport (OT) is now increasingly used as a loss or as a matching layer in neural networks. Entropy-regularized OT can be computed using the Sinkhorn algorithm but it leads to fully-dense transportation plans, meaning that all sources are (fractionally) matched with all targets. To address this issue, several works have investigated quadratic regularization instead. This regularization preserves sparsity and leads to unconstrained and smooth (semi) dual objectives, that can be solved with off-the-shelf gradient methods. Unfortunately, quadratic regularization does not give direct control over the cardinality (number of nonzeros) of the transportation plan. We propose in this paper a new approach for OT with explicit cardinality constraints on the transportation plan. Our work is motivated by an application to sparse mixture of experts, where OT can be used to match input tokens such as image patches with expert models such as neural networks. Cardinality constraints ensure that at most $k$ tokens are matched with an expert, which is crucial for computational performance reasons. Despite the nonconvexity of cardinality constraints, we show that the corresponding (semi) dual problems are tractable and can be solved with first-order gradient methods. Our method can be thought as a middle ground between unregularized OT (recovered in the limit case $k=1$) and quadratically-regularized OT (recovered when $k$ is large enough). The smoothness of the objectives increases as $k$ increases, giving rise to a trade-off between convergence speed and sparsity of the optimal plan., Comment: Camera-ready ICLR 2023

Abstract: We present a measurement of the momentum spectra of $\pi^\pm$, K$^\pm$, p$^\pm$, $\Lambda$, $\bar{\Lambda}$ and K$^{0}_{S}$ produced in interactions of negatively charged pions with carbon nuclei at beam momenta of 158 and 350 GeV/c. The total production cross sections are measured as well. The data were collected with the large-acceptance spectrometer of the fixed target experiment NA61/SHINE at the CERN SPS. The obtained double-differential $p$-$p_T$ spectra provide a unique reference data set with unprecedented precision and large phase-space coverage to tune models used for the simulation of particle production in extensive air showers in which pions are the most numerous projectiles.

Abstract: Multiple Coulomb Scattering (MCS) is a well known phenomenon occurring when charged particles traverse materials. Measurements of muons traversing low $Z$ materials made in the MuScat experiment showed that theoretical models and simulation codes, such as GEANT4 (v7.0), over-estimated the scattering. The Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) measured the cooling of a muon beam traversing a liquid hydrogen or lithium hydride (LiH) energy absorber as part of a programme to develop muon accelerator facilities, such as a Neutrino Factory or a Muon Collider. The energy loss and MCS that occur in the absorber material are competing effects that alter the performance of the cooling channel. Therefore measurements of MCS are required in order to validate the simulations used to predict the cooling performance in future accelerator facilities. We report measurements made in the MICE apparatus of MCS using a LiH absorber and muons within the momentum range 160 to 245 MeV/c. The measured RMS scattering width is about 9% smaller than that predicted by the approximate formula proposed by the Particle Data Group. Data at 172, 200 and 240 MeV/c are compared to the GEANT4 (v9.6) default scattering model. Abstract: The precise measurement of physics observables and the test of their consistency within the standard model (SM) are an invaluable approach, complemented by direct searches for new particles, to determine the existence of physics beyond the standard model (BSM). Studies of massive electroweak gauge bosons (W and Z bosons) are a promising target for indirect BSM searches, since the interactions of photons and gluons are strongly constrained by the unbroken gauge symmetries. They can be divided into two categories: (a) Fermion scattering processes mediated by s- or t-channel W/Z bosons, also known as electroweak precision measurements; and (b) multi-boson processes, which include production of two or more vector bosons in fermion-antifermion annihilation, as well as vector boson scattering (VBS) processes. The latter categories can test modifications of gauge-boson self-interactions, and the sensitivity is typically improved with increased collision energy. This report evaluates the achievable precision of a range of future experiments, which depend on the statistics of the collected data sample, the experimental and theoretical systematic uncertainties, and their correlations. In addition it presents a combined interpretation of these results, together with similar studies in the Higgs and top sector, in the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) framework. 75. Women’s country of birth and failure to catch up an overdue cervical cancer cytological screening participation during pregnancy in France, an observational study based on survey sources

Abstract: Abstract Background Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women worldwide, both for incidence and mortality. Prevention relies on screening with a Pap test to detect precancerous lesions, which can then be treated. Access to this screening is currently both improvable and inequitable. Pregnancy may be an ideal moment for women to catch up on their overdue cervical cancer screening. In the general population, women's risk of not being screened is associated with their place of birth and other social factors; this may be true as well among pregnant women. Our objective was to study the association between women's place of birth and their failure to catch up with this screening during pregnancy. Methods The 2016 French National Perinatal Survey included 13,147 women who gave birth after 21 weeks of gestation. The association between their place of birth and failure to catch up on this screening (defined by the absence of a Pap test during pregnancy for women overdue for it) was adjusted for age, parity, education level, health insurance, and when they began prenatal care with logistic regression models. Results Among the women for whom screening was then recommended, 49% were not up to date at the start of pregnancy, and of these, 53% were not caught up before delivery. After adjustment for other risk factors, maternal place of birth was not associated with a higher risk of failure to catch up with this screening during pregnancy. However, factors identified as associated with this risk included a low education level and late start of prenatal care. Conclusion About half of women overdue for cervical cancer screening did not catch up with it during their pregnancy. Professionals should pay special attention to women with lower education levels and late initiation of prenatal care, who constitute a group at high risk of not catching up on this screening during pregnancy.

Abstract: Abstract The NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron studies the onset of deconfinement in strongly interacting matter through a beam energy scan of particle production in collisions of nuclei of varied sizes. This paper presents results on inclusive double-differential spectra, transverse momentum and rapidity distributions and mean multiplicities of $$\pi ^\pm $$ π ± , $$K^\pm $$ K ± , p and $$\bar{p}$$ p ¯ produced in $$^{40}\hbox {Ar+}^{45}\hbox {Sc}$$ 40 Ar+ 45 Sc collisions at beam momenta of 13A, 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150A $$\text{ Ge }\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text{ V }\!/\!c$$ Ge V / c . The analysis uses the 10% most central collisions, where the observed forward energy defines centrality. The energy dependence of the $$K^\pm $$ K ± / $$\pi ^\pm $$ π ± ratios as well as of inverse slope parameters of the $$K^\pm $$ K ± transverse mass distributions are placed in between those found in inelastic $$p+p$$ p + p and central Pb + Pb collisions. The results obtained here establish a system-size dependence of hadron production properties that so far cannot be explained either within statistical or dynamical models.

77. Perioperative outcomes of the surgical management of achalasia in two tertiary Cameroonian hospitals: a cohort study

Abstract: Abstract Introduction Achalasia is a rare esophageal disease with potentially lethal complications. Knowledge of the outcomes of the different surgical treatment modalities for achalasia by Heller’s cardiomyotomy (HCM) helps to choose the safest and most effective option. However, data on the management of achalsia using a Heller myotomy is limited in Africa. Thus, our aim was to determine the perioperative morbidity, mortality and short-term functional outcomes of HCM in Cameroon. Methodology We conducted a cohort study throughout a 10-year chart review of patients who underwent HCM for achalasia and were followed up postoperatively for at least three months at two tertiary health centers in Cameroon. We analyzed demographic data, preoperative clinical and imaging data, treatment details, and outcomes at three to twelve months after HCM using the Eckardt score. Results We enrolled 29 patients with achalasia having a mean age of 24 ± 16 years and predominantly females (M/F of 1/3.8). The mean symptom duration was 51 ± 20 months. In 80% of cases, the diagnosis was made through a conventional x-ray contrast imaging or “barium swallow test” (93%) and/or an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (86%). The gold standard diagnostic method via esophageal manometry was unavailable. Preoperatievly, all patients had symptoms suggestive of an active achalasia. HCM was performed via laparotomy in 75% as opposed to 25% laparoscopic HCM procedures. Dor’s anterior partial fundoplication was the main anti-reflux procedure performed (59%). Mucosal perforations were the only intraoperative complications in eight patients (2 during laparoscopy vs. 6 during laparotomy; p > 0.5) and were managed successfully by simple sutures. Postoperative complications were non-severe and occurred in 10% of patients all operated via laparotomy. The mean postoperative length of hospital stay was 7 ± 3 days for laparotomy vs. 5 ± 2 days for laparoscopy; p > 0.5. The perioperative mortality rate was nil. 78. The carbon footprint of proposed $\rm e^+e^-$ Higgs factories

Abstract: The energy consumption of any of the $\rm e^+e^-$ Higgs factory projects that can credibly operate immediately after the end of LHC, namely three linear colliders (CLIC, operating at $\sqrt{s}=380$GeV; and ILC and $\rm C^3$, operating at $\sqrt{s}=250$ GeV) and two circular colliders (CEPC and FCC-ee, operating at $\sqrt{s}=240$ GeV), will be everything but negligible. Future Higgs boson studies may therefore have a significant environmental impact. This note proposes to include the carbon footprint for a given physics performance as a top-level gauge for the design optimization and, eventually, the choice of the future facility. Abstract: The T2K experiment widely uses plastic scintillator as a target for neutrino interactions and an active medium for the measurement of charged particles produced in neutrino interactions at its near detector complex. Over 10 years of operation the measured light yield recorded by the scintillator based subsystems has been observed to degrade by 0.9--2.2\% per year. Extrapolation of the degradation rate through to 2040 indicates the recorded light yield should remain above the lower threshold used by the current reconstruction algorithms for all subsystems. This will allow the near detectors to continue contributing to important physics measurements during the T2K-II and Hyper-Kamiokande eras. Additionally, work to disentangle the degradation of the plastic scintillator and wavelength shifting fibres shows that the reduction in light yield can be attributed to the ageing of the plastic scintillator., Comment: 29 pages, 18 figures. Abstract: The SuperFGD will be a part of the ND280 near detector of the T2K and Hyper Kamiokande projects, that will help to reduce systematic uncertainties related with neutrino flux and cross-section modeling. The upgraded ND280 will be able to perform a full exclusive reconstruction of the final state from neutrino-nucleus interactions, including measurements of low momentum protons, pions and, for the first time, event-by event measurements of neutron kinematics. The time resolution defines the neutron energy resolution. We present the results of time resolution measurements made with the SuperFGD prototype that consists of 9216 plastic scintillator cubes (cube size is 1 cm$^3$) readout with 1728 wavelength-shifting fibers going along three orthogonal directions. We use data from the muon beam exposure at CERN. The time resolution of 0.97 ns was obtained for one readout channel after implementing the time calibration with a correction for the time-walk effect. The time resolution improves with energy deposited in a scintillator cube. Averaging two readout channels for one scintillator cube improves the time resolution to 0.68 ns which means that signals in different channels are not synchronous. Therefore the contribution from the time recording step of 2.5 ns is averaged as well. Averaging time values from N channels improves the time resolution by $\sim 1/\sqrt{N}$. Therefore a very good time resolution should be achievable for neutrons since neutron recoils hit typically several scintillator cubes and in addition produce larger amplitudes than muons. Measurements performed with a laser and a wide-bandwidth oscilloscope demonstrated that the time resolution obtained with the muon beam is not far from its expected limit. Abstract: Summary: Background: In industrialized countries, the incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) appears stabilized. This study examined the incidence and phenotype of IBD in Northern France over a 30-year period. Methods: Including all IBD patients recorded in the EPIMAD population-based registry from 1988 to 2017 in Northern France, we described the incidence and clinical presentation of IBD according to age, sex and time. Findings: A total of 22,879 incident IBD cases were documented (59% (n = 13,445) of Crohn’s disease (CD), 38% (n = 8803) of ulcerative colitis (UC), 3% (n = 631) of IBD unclassified (IBDU)). Over the study period, incidence of IBD, CD and UC was 12.7, 7.2 and 5.1 per 105 person-years, respectively. Abstract: The T2K experiment presents new measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters using 19.7(16.3)×1020 protons on target (POT) in (anti-)neutrino mode at the far detector (FD). Compared to the previous analysis, an additional 4.7×1020 POT neutrino data was collected at the FD. Significant improvements were made to the analysis methodology, with the near-detector analysis introducing new selections and using more than double the data. Additionally, this is the first T2K oscillation analysis to use NA61/SHINE data on a replica of the T2K target to tune the neutrino flux model, and the neutrino interaction model was improved to include new nuclear effects and calculations. Frequentist and Bayesian analyses are presented, including results on sin2θ13 and the impact of priors on the δCP measurement. Both analyses prefer the normal mass ordering and upper octant of sin2θ23 with a nearly maximally CP-violating phase. Assuming the normal ordering and using the constraint on sin2θ13 from reactors, sin2θ23=0.561-0.032+0.021 using Feldman-Cousins corrected intervals, and Δm322=2.494-0.058+0.041×10-3eV2 using constant Δχ2 intervals. The CP-violating phase is constrained to δCP=-1.97-0.70+0.97 using Feldman-Cousins corrected intervals, and δCP=0,π is excluded at more than 90% confidence level. A Jarlskog invariant of zero is excluded at more than 2σ credible level using a flat prior in δCP, and just below 2σ using a flat prior in sinδCP. When the external constraint on sin2θ13 is removed, sin2θ13=28.0-6.5+2.8×10-3, in agreement with measurements from reactor experiments. These results are consistent with previous T2K analyses.

Abstract: Therapeutic monoclonal antibodies have been successful in protecting vulnerable populations against SARS-CoV-2. However, their effectiveness has been hampered by the emergence of new variants. To adapt the therapeutic landscape, health authorities have based their recommendations mostly on in vitro neutralization tests. However, these do not provide a reliable understanding of the changes in the dose-effect relationship and how they may translate into clinical efficacy. Taking the example of EvusheldTM (AZD7442), we aimed to investigate how in vivo data can provide critical quantitative results and project clinical effectiveness. We used the Golden Syrian hamster model to estimate 90 % effective concentrations (EC90) of AZD7442 in vivo against SARS-CoV-2 Omicron BA.1, BA.2 and BA.5 variants. While our in vivo results confirmed the partial loss of AZD7442 activity for BA.1 and BA.2, they showed a much greater loss of efficacy against BA.5 than that obtained in vitro. We analyzed in vivo EC90s in perspective with antibody levels measured in a cohort of immunocompromised patients who received 300 mg of AZD7442. We found that a substantial proportion of patients had serum levels of anti-SARS-CoV-2 spike protein IgG above the estimated in vivo EC90 for BA.1 and BA.2 (21 % and 92 % after 1 month, respectively), but not for BA.5. These findings suggest that AZD7442 is likely to retain clinical efficacy against BA.2 and BA.1, but not against BA.5. Overall, the present study illustrates the importance of complementing in vitro investigations by preclinical studies in animal models to help predict the efficacy of monoclonal antibodies in humans.

85. Learning Energy Networks with Generalized Fenchel-Young Losses

Abstract: Energy-based models, a.k.a. energy networks, perform inference by optimizing an energy function, typically parametrized by a neural network. This allows one to capture potentially complex relationships between inputs and outputs. To learn the parameters of the energy function, the solution to that optimization problem is typically fed into a loss function. The key challenge for training energy networks lies in computing loss gradients, as this typically requires argmin/argmax differentiation. In this paper, building upon a generalized notion of conjugate function, which replaces the usual bilinear pairing with a general energy function, we propose generalized Fenchel-Young losses, a natural loss construction for learning energy networks. Our losses enjoy many desirable properties and their gradients can be computed efficiently without argmin/argmax differentiation. We also prove the calibration of their excess risk in the case of linear-concave energies. We demonstrate our losses on multilabel classification and imitation learning tasks.

Abstract: In the framework of the computational determination of highly-accurate vertical excitation energies in small organic compounds, we explore the possibilities offered by the equation-of-motion formalism relying on the approximate fourth-order coupled-cluster (CC) method, CC4. We demonstrate, using an extended set of more than 200 reference values based on CC including up to quadruples excitations (CCSDTQ), that CC4 is an excellent approximation to CCSDTQ for excited states with a dominant contribution from single excitations with an average deviation as small as $0.003$ eV. We next assess the accuracy of several additive basis set correction schemes, in which vertical excitation energies obtained with a compact basis set and a high-order CC method are corrected with lower-order CC calculations performed in larger basis sets. Such strategies are found to be overall very beneficial, though their accuracy depend significantly on the actual scheme. Finally, CC4 is employed to improve several theoretical best estimates of the QUEST database for molecules containing between four and six (non-hydrogen) atoms, for which previous estimates were computed at the CCSDT level., Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure (supporting information available)

Abstract: The worldwide High Energy Physics community widely agrees that the next collider should be a Higgs factory. Acknowledging this priority, in 2021 CERN has launched the international Future Circular Collider (FCC) Feasibility Study (FS). The FCC Integrated Project foresees, in a first stage, a high-luminosity high-energy electron-positron collider, serving as Higgs, top and electroweak factory, and, in a second stage, an energy frontier hadron collider, with a centre-of-mass energy of at least 100 TeV. In this paper, we address a few key elements of the FCC-ee accelerator design, its performance reach, and underlying technologies, as requested by the Snowmass process. Abstract: In this white paper for the 2021 Snowmass process, we give a description of the proposed Future Circular Collider (FCC) project and its physics program. The paper summarizes and updates the discussion submitted to the European Strategy on Particle Physics. After construction of an approximately 90 km tunnel, an electron-positron collider based on established technologies allows world-record instantaneous luminosities at center-of-mass energies from the Z resonance up to tt thresholds, enabling a rich set of fundamental measurements including Higgs couplings determinations at the sub percent level, precision tests of the weak and strong forces, and searches for new particles, including dark matter, both directly and via virtual corrections or mixing. Among other possibilities, the FCC-ee will be able to (i) indirectly discover new particles coupling to the Higgs and/or electroweak bosons up to scales around 7 and 50 TeV, respectively; (ii) perform competitive SUSY tests at the loop level in regions not accessible at the LHC; (iii) study heavy-flavor and tau physics in ultra-rare decays beyond the LHC reach, and (iv) achieve the best potential in direct collider searches for dark matter, sterile neutrinos, and axion-like particles with masses up to around 90 GeV. The tunnel can then be reused for a proton-proton collider, establishing record center-of-mass collision energy, allowing unprecedented reach for direct searches for new particles up to the around 50 TeV scale, and a diverse program of measurements of the Standard Model and Higgs boson, including a precision measurement of the Higgs self-coupling, and conclusively testing weakly-interacting massive particle scenarios of thermal relic dark matter., Comment: 84 pages

Abstract: The electron-positron stage of the Future Circular Collider, FCC-ee, is a frontier factory for Higgs, top, electroweak, and flavour physics. It is designed to operate in a 100 km circular tunnel built at CERN, and will serve as the first step towards $\geq$ 100 TeV proton-proton collisions. In addition to an essential and unique Higgs program, it offers powerful opportunities to discover direct or indirect evidence of physics beyond the Standard Model. Direct searches for long-lived particles at FCC-ee could be particularly fertile in the high-luminosity $Z$ run, where $5\times 10^{12}$ $Z$ bosons are anticipated to be produced for the configuration with two interaction points. The high statistics of Higgs bosons, $W$ bosons and top quarks in very clean experimental conditions could offer additional opportunities at other collision energies. Three physics cases producing long-lived signatures at FCC-ee are highlighted and studied in this paper: heavy neutral leptons (HNLs), axion-like particles (ALPs), and exotic decays of the Higgs boson. Abstract: The NEMO-3 results for the double-$\beta$ decay of $^{150}$Nd to the 0$^+_1$ and 2$^+_1$ excited states of $^{150}$Sm are reported. The data recorded during 5.25 yr with 36.6 g of the isotope $^{150}$Nd are used in the analysis. For the first time, the signal of the $2\nu\beta\beta$ transition to the 0$^+_1$ excited state is detected with a statistical significance exceeding 5$\sigma$. The half-life is measured to be $T_{1/2}^{2\nu\beta\beta}(0^+_1) = \left[ 1.11 ^{+0.19}_{-0.14} \,\left(\mbox{stat}\right) ^{+0.17}_{-0.15}\, \left(\mbox{syst}\right) \right] \times10^{20}\,\mbox{yr}$. The limits are set on the $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay to the 2$^+_1$ level and on the $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay to the 0$^+_1$ and 2$^+_1$ levels of $^{150}$Sm., Comment: Minor corrections

93. Efficacy of a mitral regurgitation severity index to predict long‐term outcome in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease

Abstract: Abstract Background Predicting progression of myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) in dogs can be challenging. Hypothesis/Objectives The mitral regurgitation severity index (MRSI) will predict time to congestive heart failure (CHF) and all‐cause death in dogs with MMVD. Animals Eight hundred sixty‐nine client‐owned dogs. Methods Retrospective study pooling data from 4 previous samples including dogs with MMVD stage B2 or C. MRSI was calculated as: (heart rate [HR]/120) × left atrium‐to‐aorta ratio (LA:Ao) × (age in years/10) × 100. Alternative MRSI formulas substituting radiographic measures of left atrial size were also calculated. Cox proportional hazard modeling and time‐dependent receiver‐operator characteristic curves quantified prognostic performance. Results For Stage B2 pooled samples, MRSI > 156 was predictive of time to CHF (median 407 vs 1404 days; area under the curve [AUC] 0.68; hazard ratio 3.02 [95% CI 1.9‐4.9]; P 173 was predictive of all‐cause death (median survival 868 vs 1843 days; AUC 0.64; hazard ratio 4.26 [95% CI 2.4‐7.5]; P

94. Breakdown of the velocity and turbulence in the wake of a wind turbine – Part 1: Large-eddy-simulation study

Abstract: A new theoretical framework, based on an analysis in the moving and fixed frames of reference (MFOR and FFOR), is proposed to break down the velocity and turbulence fields in the wake of a wind turbine. This approach adds theoretical support to models based on the dynamic wake meandering (DWM) and opens the way for a fully analytical and physically based model of the wake that takes meandering and atmospheric stability into account, which is developed in the companion paper. The mean velocity and turbulence in the FFOR are broken down into different terms, which are functions of the velocity and turbulence in the MFOR. These terms can be regrouped as pure terms and cross terms. In the DWM, the former group is modelled, and the latter is implicitly neglected. The shape and relative importance of the different terms are estimated with the large-eddy-simulation solver Meso-NH coupled with an actuator line method. A single wind turbine wake is simulated on flat terrain, under three cases of stability: neutral, unstable and stable. In the velocity breakdown, the cross term is found to be relatively low. It is not the case for the turbulence breakdown equation where even though the cross terms are overall of lesser magnitude than the pure terms, they redistribute the turbulence and induce a non-negligible asymmetry. These findings underline the limitations of models that assume a steady velocity in the MFOR, such as the DWM or the model developed in the companion paper. It is also found that as atmospheric stability increases, the pure turbulence contribution becomes relatively larger and pure meandering relatively smaller.

95. Breakdown of the velocity and turbulence in the wake of a wind turbine – Part 2: Analytical modelling

Abstract: This work aims to develop an analytical model for the streamwise velocity and turbulence in the wake of a wind turbine where the expansion and the meandering are taken into account independently. The velocity and turbulence breakdown equations presented in the companion paper are simplified and resolved analytically, using shape functions chosen in the moving frame of reference. This methodology allows us to propose a physically based model for the added turbulence and thus to have a better interpretation of the physical phenomena at stake, in particular when it comes to wakes in a non-neutral atmosphere. Five input parameters are used: the widths (in vertical and horizontal directions) of the non-meandering wake, the standard deviation of wake meandering (in both directions) and a modified mixing length. Two calibrations for these parameters are proposed: one if the users have access to velocity time series and the other if they do not. The results are tested on a neutral and an unstable large-eddy simulation (LES) that were both computed with Meso-NH. The model shows good results for the streamwise velocity in both directions and can accurately predict modifications due to atmospheric instability. For the axial turbulence, the model misses the maximum turbulence at the top tip in the neutral case, and the proposed calibrations lead to an overestimation in the unstable case. However, the model shows encouraging behaviour as it can predict a modification of the shape function (from bimodal to unimodal) as instability and thus meandering increases.

Abstract: Tuning the step size of stochastic gradient descent is tedious and error prone. This has motivated the development of methods that automatically adapt the step size using readily available information. In this paper, we consider the family of SPS (Stochastic gradient with a Polyak Stepsize) adaptive methods. These are methods that make use of gradient and loss value at the sampled points to adaptively adjust the step size. We first show that SPS and its recent variants can all be seen as extensions of the Passive-Aggressive methods applied to nonlinear problems. We use this insight to develop new variants of the SPS method that are better suited to nonlinear models. Our new variants are based on introducing a slack variable into the interpolation equations. This single slack variable tracks the loss function across iterations and is used in setting a stable step size. Abstract: The 2020 update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics emphasised the importance of an intensified and well-coordinated programme of accelerator R&D, supporting the design and delivery of future particle accelerators in a timely, affordable and sustainable way. This report sets out a roadmap for European accelerator R&D for the next five to ten years, covering five topical areas identified in the Strategy update. The R&D objectives include: improvement of the performance and cost-performance of magnet and radio-frequency acceleration systems; investigations of the potential of laser / plasma acceleration and energy-recovery linac techniques; and development of new concepts for muon beams and muon colliders.
