Abstract

The reach of artificial intelligence continues to grow, particularly with the expansion of machine learning techniques that capitalize on increased computing power. Such systems could have tremendous benefits by providing predictions and suggestions. However, they are limited by the fact that they offer incomplete explanations of their predictions to human decision makers. The objective of this work was to summarize general information that could help users make judgments about whether a system is trustworthy and whether the system’s training “makes sense.” A preliminary study was summarized to show the importance of iterative design and testing for visualizing explanations.

62. Knowledge Elicitation to Understand Resilience: A Method and Findings From a Health Care Case Study

Abstract

Resilience engineering (RE) has ushered new approaches to learning about work in complex sociotechnical systems. In terms of improving safety, RE marks a shift from the traditional approach of retrospectively investigating adverse events, toward learning proactively about patterns in everyday work, including how things go well. This study applied the RE framework to the health care domain, by developing and implementing a new knowledge-elicitation protocol to learn about how frontline care providers achieve safe and effective patient care in their everyday work. Eighteen participants, including physicians, nurses, residents, and clinical leaders from a range of specialties, were interviewed using the new protocol. Qualitative analysis of the data revealed multiple themes and patterns which underlie resilient functioning of individuals, teams, and the organization as a whole. Further, a Resilience Mapping Framework (RMF) was developed based on major thematic categories to systematically represent and map various resilient capabilities—monitoring, anticipating, responding, and learning—across different levels of system scale, from the individual to the organizational. This study demonstrates new methods to identify and represent resilience not just during salient and critical “events,” but across the continuum of situations, from the everyday “normal” functioning to the critical.

63. Modeling and Analysis of a Dynamic Judgment Task Using a Lens Model Approach

Abstract

In this research, we investigated performance in a complex, dynamic decision-making task. Individual judgment performance in a command and control environment was modeled as linear combinations of environmental cue values using a Lens Model approach. Examination of the judgment models indicated that participants had similar judgment policies, while correlational and error analyzes indicated that performance differences were due to participants' abilities to execute judgment strategies rather than their knowledge of the task environment. This research demonstrated how the Lens Model approach can be extended to account for dynamic aspects of decision making in complex environments, through the use of individual, time dependent environmental models for each participant. Additionally, the research showed that a Lens Model approach is useful for characterizing factors in individual performance in complex judgment tasks. Empirically, this research suggests that training on task knowledge should be supplemented by training which focuses on the consistent execution of judgment strategies. Abstract

Interactive computing devices are increasingly being deployed to support individuals in improving and managing health, aging in place, and as assistive devices for those with functional limitations. Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC) aids are devices that help individuals with speech impairments communicate. They are typically prescribed by clinicians (speech-language pathologists) based on a specific individual's physical needs and disease classification. While personas have been used in the design of other consumer technologies, they have not been frequently deployed in the design of clinically oriented technologies, including AAC devices. Instead, a clinical/rehabilitation engineering approach to AAC design is typically used, focusing on the physical and symptomatic needs of a diverse group of individuals, and involving the consumer on the level of making feature recommendations and/or testing the technology near the end of the design and production process. To address this challenge, three personas of individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis were developed, intended for use in AAC device design. This article presents results from two studies which evaluated the personas. In the first study, personas were validated using an online survey of eight speech-language pathologists, and interviews of seven individuals with ALS that were not involved in the development of personas. In the second study, AAC device designers were asked to assess the potential utility of the personas for AAC device design. Results showed that developed personas had validity in representing individuals with ALS and that the personas would be useful for AAC device designers.
