Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are widespread environmental pollutants of biological origin that pose a significant threat to human, animal, and plant health, as well as to ecosystems. ARGs are found in soil, water, air, and waste, and several pathways for global dissemination in the environment have been described. However, studies on airborne ARG transport through atmospheric particles are limited. The ARGs in microorganisms inhabiting an environment are referred to as the “resistome”. A global search was conducted of air-resistome studies by retrieving bioaerosol ARG-related papers published in the last 30 years from PubMed. We found that there is no dedicated methodology for isolating ARGs in bioaerosols; instead, conventional methods for microbial culture and metagenomic analysis are used in combination with standard aerosol sampling techniques. There is a dearth of information on the bioaerosol resistomes of freshwater environments and their impact on freshwater sources used for drinking and recreational activities. More studies of aerobiome freshwater environments are needed to ensure the safe use of water and sanitation. In this review we outline and synthesize the few studies that address the freshwater air microbiome (from tap water, bathroom showers, rivers, lakes, and swimming pools) and their resistomes, as well as the likely impacts on drinking and recreational waters. We also discuss current knowledge gaps for the freshwater airborne resistome. This review will stimulate new investigations of the atmospheric microbiome, particularly in areas where both air and water quality are of public health concern.

Objectives: Air pollutants in dentistry offices may cause problems for the health of staff and patients. Accordingly, the present study was performed to the assessment of bacterial bioaerosols and particulate matter (PM) characteristics in the indoor air of dentistry clinics.Methods: The sampling points were restoration, endodontics, and prosthesis wards. The PM specimens were taken using Grimm Dust Monitor and the microbial specimens were taken using QuickTake 30.Results: The maximum and minimum PM10 concentration across the different measure wards occurred as 70.31 and 30.32 μg/m3 in the Ketabchi Clinic restoration and its endodontics ward, respectively. The total number of bioaerosols was 2079. Gram‑positive Staphylococcus spp.(872), Gram‑positive Micrococcus spp.(706), and Gram‑negative Bacillus spp.(501) were present in the indoor air. The results showed a significant relationship for PM1 and PM2.5 in each sampling site.Conclusions: The low PM and bacterial bioaerosols contamination can be due to the coincidence with coronavirus pandemic, as during this period, health and hygienic protocols have been strictly observed.

The outbreak of COVID-19 and the spread of infectious pathogens through bioaerosols have once again aroused widespread concern worldwide. Isolation ward is an important place to prevent the spread of infectious bioaerosols. However, infection of health care workers (HCWs) in the isolation ward often occurs, so it is urgent to carry out relevant research to reduce the cross-infection between HCWs and patients. In this paper, the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of bioaerosols under three mixed ventilation modes in a single ward were studied, namely, upper supply side return air of Case 1 and side supply and side return ventilation are Case 2 and Case 3 respectively. The results show that the removal efficiency of bioaerosol in the ventilation mode of Case 3, in which directional airflow is formed from the air supply inlet to the release source and then to the exhaust outlet, is 46.6% and 67.7% higher than that of Case 1 and Case 2, respectively. In addition, ventilation methods based on mixed theory do not guarantee good air quality in the breathing zone (1.3 m to 1.7 m) of HCWs, which may increase the inhalation risk for HCWs. It is hoped that our results can provide some useful suggestions for optimizing the airflow layout of the isolation ward, reducing the risk of cross-infection, and virus elimination.

Fungi are ubiquitous and metabolically versatile. Their dispersion has important scientific, environmental, health, and economic implications. They can be dispersed through the air by the aerosolization of near surfaces or transported from distant sources. Here, we tested the contribution of local (scale of meters) versus regional (kilometers) sources by analyzing an airborne fungal community by ITS sequencing around a copper mine in the North of Chile. The mine was the regional source, whereas the soil and vegetal detritus were the local sources at each point. The airborne community was highly homogeneous at ca. 2000 km2, impeding the detection of regional or local contributions. Ascomycota was the dominant phylum in the three communities. Soil and vegetal detritus communities had lower alpha diversity, but some taxa had abundance patterns related to the distance from the mine and altitude. On the contrary, the air was compositionally even and unrelated to environmental or spatial factors, except for altitude. The presence of plant pathogens in the air suggests that other distant sources contribute to this region’s airborne fungal community and reinforces the complexity of tracking the sources of air microbial communities in a real world where several natural and human activities coexist.

Studies on bioaerosol bacterial biodiversity have relevance in both ecological and health contexts, and molecular methods, such as 16S rRNA gene-based barcoded sequencing, provide efficient tools for the analysis of airborne bacterial communities. Standardized methods for sampling and analysis of bioaerosol DNA are lacking, thus hampering the comparison of results from studies implementing different devices and procedures. Three samplers that use gelatin filtration, swirling aerosol collection, and condensation growth tubes for collecting bioaerosol at an aeration tank of a wastewater treatment plant in Trieste (Italy) were used to determine the bacterial biodiversity. Wastewater samples were collected directly from the untreated sewage to obtain a true representation of the microbiological community present in the plant. Different samplers and collection media provide an indication of the different grades of biodiversity, with condensation growth tubes and DNA/RNA shieldTM capturing the richer bacterial genera. Overall, in terms of relative abundance, the air samples have a lower number of bacterial genera (64 OTUs) than the wastewater ones (75 OTUs). Using the metabarcoding approach to aerosol samples, we provide the first preliminary step toward the understanding of a significant diversity between different air sampling systems, enabling the scientific community to orient research towards the most informative sampling strategy.

Speleotherapy is one of the non-pharmacological methods for the treatment and rehabilitation of patients with chronic respiratory diseases, especially those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. On the one hand, one of the alleged main advantages of speleotherapeutic caves is the low microbial load in the air and the absence of other aeroallergens, but on the other hand, due to the lack of comprehensive air monitoring, there is little information on the pristine and human-influenced aerobiota in such environments. The aim of this study was to assess the anthropogenic effects of speleotherapy on the air microbiota and to investigate its potential impact on human health in Sežana Hospital Cave (Slovenia). From May 2020 to January 2023, air samples were collected in the cave before and after speleotherapeutic activities using two different volumetric air sampling methods—impaction and impingement—to isolate airborne microbiota. Along with sampling, environmental data were measured (CO2, humidity, wind, and temperature) to explore the anthropogenic effects on the aerobiota. While the presence of patients increased microbial concentrations by at least 83.3%, other parameters exhibited a lower impact or were attributed to seasonal changes. The structure and dynamics of the airborne microbiota are similar to those in show caves, indicating anthropization of the cave. Locally, concentrations of culturable microorganisms above 1000 CFU/m3 were detected, which could have negative or unpredictable effects on the autochthonous microbiota and possibly on human health. A mixture of bacteria and fungi typically associated with human microbiota was found in the air and identified by MALDI-TOF MS with a 90.9% identification success rate. Micrococcus luteus, Kocuria rosea, Staphylococcus hominis, and Staphylococcus capitis were identified as reliable indicators of cave anthropization.

A study was carried out in a waste sorting plant (WSP) located in France, treating dry recyclable household waste (DRHW) as well as dry recyclable commercial and industrial waste (DRCIW). Stationary and personal inhalable samples were collected in the WSP in order to investigate bioaerosols (sampling on a filter; 2 L/min and 10 L/min) and airborne dust (CIP; 10 L/min). The aim of the study was to assess the extent to which the measurement of concentration, species composition, and particle size distribution contributes to a better assessment of the biological risks associated with exposure. The results confirmed that waste and waste sorting activities are sources of airborne fungi. Indeed, ambient concentrations ranged from 7.3 × 103 to 8.5 × 105 colony-forming units (CFU)/m3 for culturable fungi and up to 4 mg/m3 for dust. Personal exposure to inhalable dust was found up to 3 mg/m3 for dust and ranged from 8.6 × 103 to 1.5 × 106 CFU/m3 for fungi. Airborne fungal communities were found to be dominated by the Penicillium genera in both bioaerosols and settled dust samples, followed by the Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Wallemia, Mucor, and Rhizopus genera. Fungi were carried by particles of aerodynamic diameters, mainly between around 2.0 and 10.0 µm. The findings dealing with size distribution and biodiversity of bioaerosols suggest that employees are exposed to complex bioaerosols during their work and help to make a finer diagnosis of the risks involved, which is often difficult in the absence of any occupational exposure limit (OEL) value for bioaerosols in general.

The airborne transmission of disease relies on the ability of microbes to survive aerosol transport and, subsequently, cause infection when interacting with a host. The length of time airborne microorganisms remain infectious in aerosol droplets is a function of numerous variables. We present measurements of mass and heat transfer from liquid aerosol droplets combined with airborne survival data for Escherichia coli MRE162, an ACDP category 1 microorganism used as a model system, under a wide range of environmental conditions, droplet compositions and microbiological conditions. In tandem, these companion measurements demonstrate the importance of understanding the complex relationship between aerosol microphysics and microbe survival. Specifically, our data consist of the correlation of a wide range of physicochemical properties (e.g., evaporation rates, equilibrium water content, droplet morphology, compositional changes in droplet solute and gas phase, etc.), with airborne viability decay to infer the impact of aerosol microphysics on airborne bacterial survival. Thus, a mechanistic approach to support prediction of the survival of microorganisms in the aerosol phase as a function of biological, microphysical, environmental, and experimental (aerosol-generation and sampling) processes is presented. Specific findings include the following: surfactants do not increase bacteria stability in aerosol, while both the bacteria growth phase and bacteria concentration may affect the rate at which bacteria decay in aerosol.

The design of ventilation and air conditioning systems in university classrooms is paramount to ensure students’ correct number of air changes per hour and an optimal thermal profile for their comfort. With the spread of the COVID-19 virus, these systems will inevitably need to evolve to cope with the current virus and any new airborne pathogens. The aim of this study is to analyze the quality of the ventilation system and the importance of the use of PPE in Lecture Hall C of the University of Naples Federico II compared to the premises in Piazzale Tecchio. After dimensioning the lecture theatre with the Autodesk software AutoCAD 2021, CFD simulations were carried out with the Computational Fluid Dynamics program Ansys 2021 R2. To study the trajectory of virus droplets released by a potentially infected student in the center of the classroom, the multispecies model was used, with carbon dioxide serving as the tracer gas for the virus cloud. After determining the CO2 contour zones at fifteen-minute intervals for a total duration of two hours, the probability of infection was calculated using the Wells–Riley equation.

Transmission of infectious agents via aerosols is an ever-present concern in animal agriculture production settings, as the aerosol route to disease transmission can lead to difficult-to-control and costly diseases, such as porcine respiratory and reproductive syndrome virus and influenza A virus. It is increasingly necessary to implement control technologies to mitigate aerosol-based disease transmission. Here, we review currently utilized and prospective future aerosol control technologies to collect and potentially inactivate pathogens in aerosols, with an emphasis on technologies that can be incorporated into mechanically driven (forced air) ventilation systems to prevent aerosol-based disease spread from facility to facility. Broadly, we find that control technologies can be grouped into three categories: (1) currently implemented technologies; (2) scaled technologies used in industrial and medical settings; and (3) emerging technologies. Category (1) solely consists of fibrous filter media, which have been demonstrated to reduce the spread of PRRSV between swine production facilities. We review the mechanisms by which filters function and are rated (minimum efficiency reporting values). Category (2) consists of electrostatic precipitators (ESPs), used industrially to collect aerosol particles in higher flow rate systems, and ultraviolet C (UV-C) systems, used in medical settings to inactivate pathogens. Finally, category (3) consists of a variety of technologies, including ionization-based systems, microwaves, and those generating reactive oxygen species, often with the goal of pathogen inactivation in aerosols. As such technologies are typically first tested through varied means at the laboratory scale, we additionally review control technology testing techniques at various stages of development, from laboratory studies to field demonstration, and in doing so, suggest uniform testing and report standards are needed. Testing standards should consider the cost–benefit of implementing the technologies applicable to the livestock species of interest. Finally, we examine economic models for implementing aerosol control technologies, defining the collected infectious particles per unit energy demand.

Legionella pneumophila are pathogenic bacteria that can be found in high concentrations in artificial water systems like evaporative cooling towers, which have been the source of frequent outbreaks in recent years. Since inhaled L. pneumophila can lead to Legionnaires' disease, the development of suitable sampling and rapid analysis strategies for these bacteria in aerosols is therefore of great relevance. In this work, different concentrations of viable L. pneumophila Sg 1 were nebulized and sampled by the cyclone sampler Coriolis® µ under defined conditions in a bioaerosol chamber. To quantify intact Legionella cells, the collected bioaerosols were subsequently analyzed by immunomagnetic separation coupled with flow cytometry (IMS-FCM) on the platform rqmicro.COUNT. For analytical comparison, measurements with qPCR and cultivation were performed. Limits of detection (LOD) of 2.9 × 103 intact cells m−3 for IMS-FCM and 7.8 × 102 intact cells m−3 for qPCR indicating a comparable sensitivity as in culture (LOD = 1.5 × 103 culturable cells m−3). Over a working range of 103 − 106 cells mL−1, the analysis of nebulized and collected aerosol samples with IMS-FCM and qPCR provides higher recovery rates and more consistent results than by cultivation. Overall, IMS-FCM is a suitable culture-independent method for quantification of L. pneumophila in bioaerosols and is promising for field application due to its simplicity in sample preparation. In a comparative study contrasting new and traditional clustering techniques, the capabilities of K-means, the hierarchal clustering algorithm (HCA), and GenieClust were examined. Both K-means and HCA demonstrated strong consistency in cluster profiles and sizes, emphasizing their effectiveness in differentiating particle types and confirming that the fundamental patterns within the data were captured reliably. An added dimension to the study was the integration of an autoencoder (AE). When coupled with K-means, the AE enhanced outlier detection, particularly in identifying compositional loadings of each cluster. Conversely, whilst the AE's application to all methods revealed a potential for noise reduction by removing infrequent, larger particles, in the case of HCA, this information distortion during the encoding process may have affected the clustering outcomes by reducing the number of observably distinct clusters. The findings from this study indicate that GenieClust, when applied both with and without an AE, was effective in delineating a notable number of distinct clusters. Furthermore, each cluster's compositional loadings exhibited greater internal variability, distinguishing up to 3× more particle types per cluster compared to traditional means, and thus underscoring the algorithms' ability to differentiate subtle data patterns. The work here postulates that the application of GenieClust both with and without an AE may provide important information through initial outlier detection and enriched speciation with an AE applied, evidenced by a greater number of distinct clusters within the main body of the data. This paper focuses on studying the microbiological properties of the Tibetan Palace Museum, which is located on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and contains a vast collection of cultural heritage artifacts. The air quality of the museum is critical to the preservation of these artifacts, and factors such as microbial species, concentration, and particle size distribution are important indicators of air quality. The paper examines the concentration levels, particle size distribution, species diversity, and correlation between environmental factors and microorganisms in the museum. The study found that the concentration of bacteria was 2–3 times higher than normal, while the concentration of fungi was lower than average. The predominant microorganisms in the museum were Bacillus cereus, Bacillus psychrodurans, and Neurospora terricola. The research also discovered that the concentration of microorganisms was positively correlated with PM2.5 concentration and negatively correlated with temperature, relative humidity, and PM10 concentration. The study concludes that the museum's micro-environment is not ideal for the preservation of ancient books and cultural relics, and more research is necessary to identify the general microbiological traits and eradicate hazardous species in plateau museums. Bioaerosol components can endanger the indoor air quality (IAQ) in hospital buildings. The bacteria present in bioaerosols may cause hospital-associated infections and increase the number of occupational diseases, harming healthcare workers and patients with vulnerable immune systems. This study aimed to assess the bacteriological contamination of bioaerosols and the IQA parameters in a tertiary hospital. The study was performed in four specialized critical hospitalization units (Infectious Disease, Clinical Oncology, Burn and Plastic Surgery, and Kidney Transplant) located at a tertiary university hospital before and during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Air samples were collected by impaction; a single-stage sampler was used to quantify, to isolate, and to identify airborne bacteria. The environmental variables particulate matter concentration, carbon dioxide concentration, temperature, and relative humidity were analyzed in each sample, on appropriate equipment. The concentration of airborne bacteria varied from 51.22 ± 8.89 to 264.11 ± 161.36 CFU/m3. Of the thirteen bacterial genera identified in the samples, eleven were potentially pathogenic or opportunistic. The environmental variables temperature and relative humidity were higher than indicated. We concluded that IAQ in this hospital must be improved, and that the new sanitary parameters established during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic influenced positively the concentration of colony-forming units and the total number of bacterial species/strains identified in the two phases of this research. We recommend analyzing other factors that affect bioaerosol composition, so that a complete view of the bioaerosol components can be achieved. A more comprehensive analysis would also allow IAQ control to be adopted in each specialized critical hospitalization unit studied here as well as in other sectors of this hospital and even in other hospitals worldwide. Primary biological aerosol (PBA) is a component of coarse mode aerosol which may affect climate and health. The possible climate impacts arise from interactions between PBA and water vapor, especially since some PBA nucleate ice at warm temperatures. The health impacts span from seasonal allergies to transmission of pathogens. Despite their potential importance, the emissions, transport, and atmospheric distribution of PBA are poorly understood, especially at high latitudes where cloud effects could be pronounced. Here we report summertime measurements of fluorescent aerosol (a proxy for PBA) over the Bering and Chukchi Seas using a Wide‐Band Integrated Bioaerosol Sensor aboard a Twin Otter, alongside a lidar which detected water column productivity. Most observations occurred at 300 m over the ocean with periodic excursions to 60 and 900 m. Loadings were always low in the marine boundary layer, despite the presence of subsurface plankton layers and in contrast to other recent reports, likely indicating low oceanic emissions during our study. Large variability was observed in PBA aloft, with higher concentrations approaching those observed over the Continental US. Back trajectory analysis showed that high loadings were associated with recent transit through the continental boundary layer and we estimate PBA emissions from the Arctic tundra of up to 300 m−2 s−1 at the warmest observed temperatures. On days with strong transport from land (∼50% of our flights), PBA accounts for 12% of supermicron number and 64% of supermicron volume, indicating potentially significant effects on the albedo, glaciation and lifetime of Arctic clouds. This makes the clouds go away faster and reflect less sunlight. In the warming Arctic, ice, and snow (which also reflect sunlight) are melting, exposing water. Water absorbs sunlight, which makes cloud cover even more important. At the same time, Arctic ecosystems are changing, and might emit more biological particles in response. We measured biological particles over the Arctic Ocean. We found more than we were expecting and we think most of them came from land. This could change how Arctic clouds behave in important ways. As the Arctic continues to warm there might be even more of these particles in the future. COVID-19, a pandemic of acute respiratory syndrome diseases, led to significant social, economic, psychological, and public health impacts. It was not only uncontrolled but caused serious problems at the outbreak time. Physical contact and airborne transmission are the main routes of transmission for bioaerosols such as SARS-CoV-2. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO), surfaces should be disinfected with chlorine dioxide, sodium hypochlorite, and quaternary compounds, while wearing masks, maintaining social distance, and ventilating are strongly recommended to protect against viral aerosols. Ozone generators have gained much attention for purifying public places and workplaces' atmosphere, from airborne bioaerosols, with specific reference to the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. Despite the scientific concern, some bioaerosols, such as SARS-CoV-2, are not inactivated by ozone under its standard tolerable concentrations for human. Previous reports did not consider the ratio of surface area to volume, relative humidity, temperature, product of time in concentration, and half-life time simultaneously. Furthermore, the use of high doses of exposure can seriously threaten human health and safety since ozone is shown to have a high half-life at ambient conditions (several hours at 55% of relative humidity). Herein, making use of the reports on ozone physicochemical behavior in multiphase environments alongside the collision theory principles, we demonstrate that ozone is ineffective against a typical bioaerosol, SARS-CoV-2, at nonharmful concentrations for human beings in air. Introduction Recycling of domestic waste and a number of employees in the recycling industry is expected to increase. This study aims to quantify current exposure levels of inhalable dust, endotoxin, and microorganisms and to identify determinants of exposure among recycling workers. Methods This cross-sectional study included 170 full-shift measurements from 88 production workers and 14 administrative workers from 12 recycling companies in Denmark. The companies recycle domestic waste (sorting, shredding, and extracting materials from waste). We collected inhalable dust with personal samplers that were analysed for endotoxin (n = 170) and microorganisms (n = 101). Exposure levels of inhalable dust, endotoxin, and microorganisms and potential determinants of exposure were explored by mixed-effects models. Results The production workers were 7-fold or higher exposed to inhalable dust, endotoxin, bacteria, and fungi than the administrative workers. Among production workers recycling domestic waste, the geometric mean exposure level was 0.6 mg/m3 for inhalable dust, 10.7 endotoxin unit (EU)/m3 for endotoxin, 1.6 × 104 colony forming units (CFU)/m³ of bacteria, 4.4 × 104 CFU/m³ of fungi (25 °C), and 1.0 × 103 CFU/m³ of fungi (37 °C). Workers handling paper or cardboard had higher exposure levels than workers handling other waste fractions. The temperature did not affect exposure levels, although there was a tendency toward increased exposure to bacteria and fungi with higher temperatures. For inhalable dust and endotoxin, exposure levels during outdoor work were low compared to indoor work. For bacteria and fungi, indoor ventilation decreased exposure. The work task, waste fraction, temperature, location, mechanical ventilation, and the company size explained around half of the variance of levels of inhalable dust, endotoxin, bacteria, and fungi. Conclusion The production workers of the Danish recycling industry participating in this study had higher exposure levels of inhalable dust, endotoxin, bacteria, and fungi than the administrative workers. Exposure levels of inhalable dust and endotoxin among recycling workers in Denmark were generally below established or suggested occupational exposure limits (OEL). However, 43% to 58% of the individual measurements of bacteria and fungi were above the suggested OEL. The waste fraction was the most influential determinant for exposure, and the highest exposure levels were seen during handling paper or cardboard. Two poultry Confined Animal Feeding Units (CAFUs), "House A" and "House B", were selected from the TAMU poultry facility for the study, and samples were collected over a five-day period. Bioaerosol sampling was conducted using a Wetted Wall Cyclone (WWC) bioaerosol collector at the two CAFU houses, in which House A housed approximately 720 broiler chickens and roosters, while House B remained unoccupied and served as a reference. Both houses consisted of 24 pens arranged on either side of a central walkway. Bacterial content analysis was conducted using microbial plating, real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), and Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME) analysis, while ambient temperature and relative humidity were also monitored. The concentrations of microorganisms in House A showed a highly dynamic range, ranging from 4000 to 60,000 colony forming units (CFU) per cubic meter of air. Second, the WWC samples contained approximately ten-fold more bacterial DNA than the filter samples, suggesting higher levels of viable cells captured by the WWC. Third, significant concentrations of pathogens, including Salmonella, Staphylococcus, and Campylobacter, were detected in the poultry facility. Lastly, the WWC system demonstrated effective functionality and continuous operation, even in the challenging sampling environment of the CAFU. The goal of this study was to characterize the resident population of microorganisms (pathogenic and non-pathogenic) present in the CAFUs and to evaluate the WWC's performance in such an environment characterized by elevated temperature, high dust content, and feathers. This knowledge could then be used to improve understanding microorganism dynamics in CAFUs including the spread of bacterial infections between animals and from animals to humans that work in these facilities, as well as of the WWC performance in this type of environment (elevated temperature, high content of dust and feathers). Pathogenic microbes with antibiotic resistance can thrive on municipal solid waste as nutrients and be aerosolized and transported to vicinities during waste disposal processes. However, the characterization of pathogenic bioaerosols and assessment of their exposure risks are lacking. Herein, particle size, concentration, activity, antibiotic resistance, and pathogenicity of airborne microorganisms were assessed in different sectors of a typical landfill. Results showed that active sector in downwind direction has the highest bioaerosol level (1234 CFU/m3), while residential area has the highest activity (14.82 mg/L). Botanical deodorizer from mist cannon can effectively remove bioaerosol. Most bioaerosols can be inhaled into respiratory system till bronchi with sizes ranging from 2.1−3.3 and 3.3−4.7 µm. Pathogenic bacteria (Bacilli, Bacillus , and Burkholderia-Paraburkholderia) and allergenic fungi (Aspergillus, Cladosporium , and Curvularia) prevailed in landfill. Although high abundance of microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) producing bioaerosols were detected, these mVOCs contributed little to odor issues in landfill. Notably, surrounding areas have higher levels of antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs) than inner landfill with tetC, acrB, acrF, mdtF, and bacA as dominant ones. Most ARGs were significantly correlated with bacterial community, while environmental parameters mainly influenced fungal prevalence. Devices for the filtration and sterilization of indoor spaces have been widely used owing to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). There is a need for a standard method to test the effectiveness of such devices. In this study, we aimed to identify important factors that must be considered while evaluating the efficiency of air purifiers in a large chamber. Investigation of the distribution characteristics of airborne viruses in the large chamber show that they were evenly distributed. Natural (gravitational) reduction of airborne viruses in the large chamber was also investigated. We found that the airborne-virus removal efficiency of an air purifier in a large chamber should be evaluated after 40 min for better accuracy because the concentration of airborne viruses rapidly decreased within the first 40 min and the settling velocity reduced after 40 min. In addition, the minimum standard deviation of airborne-virus removal efficiency of air purifier was 1.9% with a natural reduction time of 40 min. Moreover, the sampling efficiencies of three types of samplers were compared. The impactor showed the highest sampling efficiency (4.8 × 104–5.1 × 104 PFU/m3-min) and a small standard deviation (0.9 × 104 PFU/m3-min). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bioaerosol contamination in the indoor environment has caused a slew of negative health effects and diseases. Hence, its inactivation and reduction are necessary. In this study, effective synthesis of Ag0_Iron oxide@GO nanocomposite was carried out using clove flower bud extract as a green reducing agent. The aqueous extract with high polyphenols—Tannin content (75.6 TAE, 41.8 TAE), and flavonoids (44,705 mg QE/Kg) group of compound were mainly responsible for reduction of metal salts to nanoparticles. Characterization using UV–VIS spectra, FTIR, and XRD revealed functionalization of graphene oxide, whereas SEM–EDX, HR-TEM imaging, and Scherrer's equation revealed the average size of Ag0NPs (54 nm) and Iron oxide (62 nm) nanoparticle coated on graphene oxide. The synthesized nanocomposite was tested for antifungal activity against most abundantly present yeast isolated from the indoor office environment. The isolated yeast was identified as Candida parapsilosis using fungal ITS rRNA sequencing. Similarly, ITS fungal metagenome sequencing was carried out for verification of the percent abundance of the microbiome in indoor air. Results revealed the predominance of phylum Ascomycota (69.64%). Within this phylum, the most abundant fungal species were found to be Candida parapsilosis (38.1%). This yeast is an opportunistic pathogen linked to nosocomial infections in hospitals. Enhanced inhibition of C. parapsilosis (zone of inhibition of 22 ± 0.8 mm) was observed when the nanocomposite was exposed to light, indicating effective visible photocatalytic activity. Results of growth curve experiments in the presence of nanocomposite were also in-line with that of antifungal studies. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the scientific community has been galvanized to unravel the enigmatic role of bioaerosols in the transmission of infectious agents. This literature review, anchored in the extensive Web of Science Core Collection database covering the period from 1990 to 2023, utilizes a bibliometric approach to chart the dynamic landscape of bioaerosol research. It meticulously documents the paradigm shifts and burgeoning areas of inquiry that have emerged in the aftermath of the pandemic. This review meticulously maps out the sources and detection strategies of pathogens in a variety of ecosystems. It clearly shows that impaction and filtration sampling methods, followed by colony counting and PCR-based detection techniques, were predominantly used in the scientific works within the previous three decades. It synthesizes the progress and limitations inherent in a range of models for predicting aerosol-mediated pathogen spread and provides a comparative analysis of eDNA technology and traditional analytical techniques for bioaerosols. The accuracy of these detection methods and forecasting models is paramount for the early recognition of transmission risks, which, in turn, paves the way for prompt and effective disease mitigation strategies. By providing a thorough analysis of the historical progression and current state of bioaerosol research, this review illuminates the path ahead, identifying the critical research needs that will drive the field’s advancement in the years to come.

Bioaerosols are small airborne particles composed of microbiological fragments, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, pollens, and/or by-products of cells, which may be viable or non-viable wherever applicable. Exposure to these agents can cause a variety of health issues, such as allergic and infectious diseases, neurological disorders, and cancer. Therefore, detecting and identifying bioaerosols is crucial, and bioaerosol sampling is a key step in any bioaerosol investigation. This review provides an overview of the current bioaerosol sampling methods, both passive and active, as well as their applications and limitations for rapid on-site monitoring. The challenges and trends for detecting airborne microorganisms using molecular and immunological methods are also discussed, along with a summary and outlook for the development of prompt monitoring technologies.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses several issues concerning the management of hospital-acquired infections, leading to increasing morbidity and mortality rates and higher costs of care. Multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria can spread in the healthcare setting by different ways. The most important are direct contact transmission occurring when an individual comes into physical contact with an infected or colonized patient (which can involve healthcare workers, patients, or visitors) and indirect contact transmission occurring when a person touches contaminated objects or surfaces in the hospital environment. Furthermore, in recent years, toilets in hospital settings have been increasingly recognised as a hidden source of MDR bacteria. Different sites in restrooms, from toilets and hoppers to drains and siphons, can become contaminated with MDR bacteria that can persist there for long time periods. Therefore, shared toilets may play an important role in the transmission of nosocomial infections since they could represent a reservoir for MDR bacteria. Such pathogens can be further disseminated by bioaerosol and/or droplets potentially produced during toilet use or flushing and be transmitted by inhalation and contact with contaminated fomites. In this review, we summarize available evidence regarding the molecular features of MDR bacteria contaminating toilets of healthcare environments, with a particular focus on plumbing components and sanitary installation. The presence of bacteria with specific molecular traits in different toilet sites should be considered when adopting effective managing and containing interventions against nosocomial infections potentially due to environmental contamination. Finally, here we provide an overview of traditional and new approaches to reduce the spreading of such infections.

Indoor air quality (IAQ) in schools has received attention over the past decades but still lacks specific standards and regulations. This study aimed to review the impact of bioaerosol activity in indoor environments on acute respiratory diseases and explore whether carbon dioxide can be used as an indicator of bioaerosol and respiratory diseases in indoor environments in K-12 school systems. Findings suggest a lack of a consensual approach to evaluate bioaerosols impacting IAQ in indoor infrastructures, particularly in school environments; an elevated CO _2 concentration inside the school classrooms was not uncommon, and the evidence of unsatisfactory and degraded IAQ (surpassing ASHRAE standards) at public schools in rural and urban settings in one of the North Central County, Florida. It was found that CO _2 levels can be associated with bioaerosol activity, and sufficient ventilation within the space substantially reduces the airborne time of respiratory droplets and CO _2 levels. CO _2 monitoring can act as an effective, low-cost alternative to surveying or detecting the prevalence of respiratory diseases, which may hold strength through establishing critical CO _2 thresholds and, thereafter associating it with the infectious doses of pathogen activity.

The properties of bioaerosols are complex and diverse, and have a direct impact on the environment, climate, and human health. The effective identification of bioaerosols in the atmosphere is very significant with regard to accurately obtaining the atmospheric chemical characteristics of bioaerosols. To improve the detection of large particle bioaerosol and non-bioaerosol interference in the process of bioaerosol recognition, this study detected a variety of bioaerosols and abiotic aerosols based on a single particle aerosol mass spectrometer (SPAMS). Furthermore, the bioaerosol particle identification and classification algorithm based on Zawadowicz the ratio of phosphate to organic nitrogen is optimized to distinguish bioaerosols from abiotic aerosols. The influence of ionized laser energy on classification methods is thoroughly explored here. The results show that 15 kinds of pure fungal aerosols were detected by SPAMS based on a wide size range sampling system, and that fungal aerosols with a particle size of up to 10 μm can be detected. Through the mass spectra peak ratio method of PO3−/PO2− and CNO−/CN−, when discriminating abiotic aerosols such as disruptive biomass combustion particles, automobile exhaust, and dust from pure bacterial aerosols, the discrimination degree is up to 97.7%. The optimized ratio detection method of phosphate to organic nitrogen has strong specificity, which can serve as the discriminant basis for identifying bioaerosols in SPAMS analytical processes. This study aimed to measure the levels of airborne radon Rn and bioaerosols – culturable airborne bacteria (CAB) and culturable airborne fungi (CAF)—in South Korea's residential environments, considering living conditions such as the number of ventilations, number of windows, floors, temperature, and relative humidity.. The range of Rn levels was 0.43–7.439 pCi/L with a median of 0.70 pCi/L. The CAB levels were 239–488 colony-forming unit (CFU)/m3 with a median of 309 CFU/m3, and CAF levels were 174–366 CFU/m3 with a median of 233 CFU/m3. Thus, this study found that semi-basement residential indoor environments negatively affected Rn and bioaerosol levels, and living in such residences resulted in high health condition scores on the bad side. The atmosphere is an integral component of the Earth's microbiome. Abundance, viability, and diversity of microorganisms circulating in the air are determined by various factors including environmental physical variables and intrinsic and biological properties of microbes, all ranging over large scales. The aeromicrobiome is thus poorly understood and difficult to predict due to the high heterogeneity of the airborne microorganisms and their properties, spatially and temporally. The atmosphere acts as a highly selective dispersion means on large scales for microbial cells, exposing them to a multitude of physical and chemical atmospheric processes. This study aimed to assess the markers of chemical and microbiological contamination of the air at sport centers (e.g., the fitness center in Poland) including the determination of particulate matter, CO2, formaldehyde (DustTrak™ DRX Aerosol Monitor; Multi-functional Air Quality Detector), volatile organic compound (VOC) concentration (headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry), the number of microorganisms in the air (culture methods), and microbial biodiversity (high-throughput sequencing on the Illumina platform). Additionally the number of microorganisms and the presence of SARS-CoV-2 (PCR) on the surfaces was determined. Total particle concentration varied between 0.0445 mg m−3 and 0.0841 mg m−3 with the dominance (99.65–99.99%) of the PM2.5 fraction. The CO2 concentration ranged from 800 ppm to 2198 ppm, while the formaldehyde concentration was from 0.005 mg/m3 to 0.049 mg m−3. A total of 84 VOCs were identified in the air collected from the gym. Phenol, D-limonene, toluene, and 2-ethyl-1-hexanol dominated in the air at the tested facilities. The average daily number of bacteria was 7.17 × 102 CFU m−3–1.68 × 103 CFU m−3, while the number of fungi was 3.03 × 103 CFU m−3–7.34 × 103 CFU m−3. In total, 422 genera of bacteria and 408 genera of fungi representing 21 and 11 phyla, respectively, were detected in the gym. The most abundant bacteria and fungi (>1%) that belonged to the second and third groups of health hazards were: Escherichia-Shigella, Corynebacterium, Bacillus, Staphylococcus, Cladosporium, Aspergillus, and Penicillium. In addition, other species that may be allergenic (Epicoccum) or infectious (Acinetobacter, Sphingomonas, Sporobolomyces) were present in the air. Moreover, the SARS-CoV-2 virus was detected on surfaces in the gym. Air is a medium for dispersal of environmental DNA (eDNA) carried in bioaerosols, yet the atmosphere is mostly unexplored as a source of genetic material encompassing all domains of life. In this study, we designed and deployed a robust, sterilizable hardware system for airborne nucleic acid capture featuring active filtration of a quantifiable, controllable volume of air and a high-integrity chamber to protect the sample from loss or contamination. We used our hardware system on an aircraft across multiple height transects over major aerosolization sources to collect air eDNA, coupled with high-throughput amplicon sequencing using multiple DNA metabarcoding markers targeting bacteria, plants, and vertebrates to test the hypothesis of large-scale genetic presence of these bioaerosols throughout the planetary boundary layer in the lower troposphere. Here, we demonstrate that the multi-taxa DNA assemblages inventoried up to 2,500 m using our airplane-mounted hardware system are reflective of major aerosolization sources in the survey area and show previously unreported airborne species detections (i.e., Allium sativum L). We also pioneer an aerial survey flight grid standardized for atmospheric sampling of genetic material and aeroallergens using a light aircraft and limited resources. Our results show that air eDNA from terrestrial bacteria, plants, and vertebrates is detectable up to high altitude using our airborne air sampler and demonstrate the usefulness of light aircraft in monitoring campaigns. However, our work also underscores the need for improved marker choices and reference databases for species in the air column, particularly eukaryotes. Taken together, our findings reveal strong connectivity or mixing of terrestrial-associated eDNA from ground level aerosolization sources and the atmosphere, and we recommend that parameters and indices considering lifting action, atmospheric instability, and potential for convection be incorporated in future surveys for air eDNA. Overall, this work establishes a foundation for light aircraft campaigns to comprehensively and economically inventory bioaerosol emissions and impacts at scale, enabling transformative future opportunities in airborne DNA technology. Over a 2-year period, drag swabs of orchard soil surface and air, soil, and almond leaf samples were collected in an almond orchard adjacent to (35 m from the first row of trees) and downwind from a poultry operation and in two almond orchards (controls) that were surrounded by other orchards. Samples were evaluated for aerobic plate count, generic Escherichia coli, other coliforms, the presence of Salmonella, bacterial community structure (analyzed through sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene), and amounts of dry solids (dust) on leaf surfaces on trees 0, 60, and 120 m into each orchard. E. coli was isolated from 41 of 206 (20%) and 1 of 207 (0.48%) air samples in the almond-poultry and control orchards, respectively. Salmonella was not isolated from any of the 529 samples evaluated. On average, the amount of dry solids on leaves collected from trees closest to the poultry operation was more than 2-fold greater than from trees 120 m into the orchard or from any of the trees in the control orchards. Introduction: Wastewater contains a large number of pathogenic and non-pathogenic microorganisms that can become bioaerosols during the treatment processes in different units of the treatment plant, and pose a risk to workers and nearby residents. In this study, the release of bioaerosols from a wastewater treatment plant of Morche Khort Industrial Town was investigated. Materials and Methods: Sampling was actively performed according to EPA standard, in two seasons of spring and summer in 2018-2019, by an environmental sampling pump with a flow rate of 15 l/min and a single-stage impactor. The data were analyzed by SPSS software version 2020. Results: The study results showed that the mean number of bacteria in the aeration tank was significantly higher than other points. The mean number of fungi in the aeration pond with 144 CFU/m3 had the highest concentration, and no fungal bioaerosol was observed 500 m downstream. Regarding the emission of H2S, CH4, and VOC gases, the anaerobic tank had the highest emission of these gases. Conclusion: Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) with activated sludge treatment technology and an aeration system can lead to an increase in the concentration of bacterial and fungal aerosols around the units and in surrounding areas.

Abstract Aim To explore the health risk of living near permitted composting sites (PCSs) on disease severity in children and adults with cystic fibrosis (CF) across the UK. Methods A semi-individual cross-sectional study was used to examine the risk of disease severity in people with CF (pwCF) within and beyond 4 km of PCSs in the UK in 2016. All pwCF registered in the UK CF Registry were eligible for this study. Linear and Poisson regressions, adjusted for age, gender, genotype, BMI, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and deprivation, were used to quantify associations between distance to a PCS and percent predicted forced expiratory volume in one second (ppFEV1), pulmonary exacerbations (#IVdays), and fungal and bacterial infections. Results The mean age of the 9,361 pwCF (3,931 children and 5,430 adults) studied was 20.1 (SD = 14.1) years; 53.3% were male; and 49.2% were homozygous F508del. Over 10% of pwCF (n = 1,015) lived within 4 km of a PCS. We found no statistically significant difference in ppFEV1 and #IVdays/year in children. However, in adults, ppFEV1 was -1.07% lower (95% confidence interval (CI): -2.29%, 0.16%) and #IVdays/year were 1.02 day higher (95%CI: 1.01, 1.04) within 4 km of a PCS. Furthermore, there were statistically significant differences in mean ppFEV1 in CF adults with Aspergillus fumigatus (58.2.% vs 62.0%, p = 0.005) and Candida spp. (56.9% vs 59.9%, p = 0.029) residing within 4 km of a PCS. No associations were identified for allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, P. aeruginosa or Staphylococcus aureus. Conclusions This novel national study provides evidence that adults with CF living near a PCS may experience small reductions in lung function, an increased risk of pulmonary exacerbations, and more frequent fungal infections. If confirmed by studies using refined exposure assessment methods accounting for bioaerosol dispersion, these results could have important implications for the living environment of pwCF.

The condition of air quality depends on many external (the amount of pollutant emissions, intensity and type of physico-chemical changes taking place in the atmosphere and large-scale movement of air pollutant masses) as well as internal factors (such as finishing materials, room equipment, heating systems, ventilation systems, and the presence of the humans themselves). As a result, there are various risks related to air quality, including the most important ones related to microbial contamination. For this reason, it was decided to analyze the quality of internal air in terms of microbiological contamination that may occur in university lecture halls with mechanical supply and exhaust ventilation. The analysis also took into account the impact of mechanical ventilation on physical parameters such as temperature, relative humidity as well as the concentration of PM10 and PM2.5 particulate matter pollutants, thus determining the impact of the tested parameters on human health and well-being. All the obtained results were compared with the applicable permissible standards and conclusions were drawn regarding the improvement of the quality of the indoor air microclimate.

The article presents the history of the development and the current state of the apparatus for the detection of interferents and biological warfare simulants in the air with the laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) method. The LIF method is the most sensitive spectroscopic method and also enables the measurement of single particles of biological aerosols and their concentration in the air. The overview covers both the on-site measuring instruments and remote methods. The spectral characteristics of the biological agents, steady-state spectra, excitation–emission matrices, and their fluorescence lifetimes are presented. Diurnal variations in the concentrations of culturable fungal and bacterial bioaerosols were measured during winter and spring. Significant variations in concentrations of bacterial bioaerosols were observed during the day in this measurement campaign. The bacterial bioaerosol concentration exhibited two peaks during the morning and evening periods in the winter season. Diurnal variation in bacterial bioaerosols was greater in spring than that in winter. However, fungal bioaerosol concentrations were not affected by diurnal and seasonal changes. Environmental properties such as temperature, relative humidity, and ultraviolet irradiation intensity were measured, and their relationship with bioaerosol concentrations was analyzed. The surrounding temperature was suspected as a significant factor. This diurnal variation in culturable bioaerosols can explain various public health phenomena. Cucumber angular leaf spot (ALS) disease, caused by Pseudomonas amygdali pv. lachrymans (Pal), is an emerging disease with a high incidence that causes severe damage to cucumber worldwide. Bacterial aerosols play a crucial role in the epidemiology of greenhouse ALS disease. However, little is known about the influence of temperature and relative humidity (RH) on the dynamics of Pal in aerosols. A study was conducted to investigate the relationships between the concentration of Pal aerosols and their dependence on temperature and RH in aerosol chambers and greenhouses. The results demonstrated that temperature and RH are both significant factors influencing the release amount, survival time and infectivity of Pal in aerosols, while RH has a greater influence on particle size than temperature across the range of conditions tested. The release amount and survival time of Pal in aerosols under high RH (95%) and low temperature (= 25°C) conditions were significantly higher than those under low RH (35%) and high temperature (35°C) conditions. The highest release amount of Pal aerosol (96 CFU/m3) and highest survival rate (98.41%) were found at 18°C and 95% RH, while the highest disease index (DI = 60.9) caused by Pal aerosol was found at 25°C and 95% RH. In addition, Pal aerosols presented a larger diameter (4.7->7.0 mm) under high RH (95% RH) than under dry conditions (= 65% RH). These findings will play a crucial role in elucidating the influence of environmental parameters on the dynamics and transmission of Pal in aerosols. Based on our findings, preliminary recommendations for controlling airborne Pal spread involve controlling air temperature and RH, which will contribute to the effective alleviation and control of cucumber ALS disease. The characteristics of the bacterial community structure in aerosols of different particle sizes over northern Chinese marginal seas and the northwestern Pacific Ocean in autumn were analyzed using high-throughput sequencing and the quantitative real-time PCR method based on 16S rRNA genes. Combined with environmental factors and air mass sources, the bacterial abundance, community diversity, composition and structural characteristics in aerosols were studied, which might provide a scientific evaluation for a comprehensive understanding of the characteristics, long-distance transmission and ecological effects of aerosols from coastal waters to the distant ocean (northwestern Pacific Ocean). At the junction of the South Yellow Sea and the East China Sea, the bacterial abundance in the aerosols was substantially affected by transmission of continental air masses and was higher than those in other samples, and the bacterial abundance in coarse particle (> 2.1 µm) samples was significantly higher than that in fine particle (< 2.1 µm) samples (P < 0.05). In contrast, aerosols collected at the northwestern Pacific Ocean (NWP5 site) were less affected by transmissions of continental air masses, and their bacterial abundance in coarse particle samples was significantly lower than that in fine particle samples. Significant differences in the richness and diversity of bacterial communities were observed among all samples (P < 0.05). The differences in the bacterial community in different sea areas were greater than those in the same sample with different particle sizes (P > 0.05). Among the environmental factors examined, a significant negative correlation was observed between bacterial community richness and temperature (P < 0.05), and the bacterial community diversity was significantly positively correlated with the concentration of K+ (P < 0.05). Canonical correspondence analysis showed that temperature, NH4+ concentration and SO42− concentration exerted significant effects on bacterial community structures (P < 0.01) in aerosols of different particle sizes over northern Chinese marginal seas and the northwestern Pacific Ocean. The relationship between the concentration of particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter = 10 µm (PM10), meteorological variables (air temperature, relative humidity, UV index, and wind speed), and the concentration of total fungal spores in the outdoor air of Plaza San Martin in Lima was studied. The sampling of fungal spores was performed using a single-stage Andersen-type volumetric impact equipment; PM10 values were provided by the Mobile Station of La Colmena (PROTRANSPORTE - Municipality of Lima). The results show that the concentrations of PM10 were highest in the months of March and April, which coincide with the highest concentrations of total spores, and continuously decreased to a minimum in the months of June and July. PM10 concentration showed a strong positive correlation with total spore concentration. Regarding the influence of meteorological variables on the concentration of PM10, a non-significant positive correlation was found with wind speed (r = 0.727). Air temperature and UV index presented a positive correlation with a significance level p < 0.001. Concerning relative humidity (RH), PM10 presented a negative correlation with a significance level p < 0.05. Further studies are required to evaluate the concentrations of PM10 in relation to the concentrations of fungal spores in the atmosphere of San Martin Square. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
