We analyzed the feedback of AGN jets on cooling flow clusters using three-dimensional AMR hydrodynamic simulations. We studied the interaction of the jet with the intracluster medium and creation of low X-ray emission cavities (Bubbles) in cluster plasma. The distribution of energy input by the jet into the system was quantified in its different forms, i.e. internal, kinetic and potential. We find that the energy associated with the bubbles, (pV + gamma pV/(gamma-1)), accounts for less than 10 percent of the jet energy., Comment: "Accepted for publication in Astrophysics & Space Science"

We examine the distribution of injected energy in three-dimensional, adaptive-grid simulations of the heating of cooling flows. We show that less than 10 percent of the injected energy goes into bubbles. Consequently, the energy input from the nucleus is underestimated by a factor of order 6 when it is taken to be given by PVgamma/(gamma-1), where P and V are the pressure and volume of the bubble, and gamma the ratio of principal specific heats., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 5 pages

We report new constraints on the local escape speed of our Galaxy. Our analysis is based on a sample of high velocity stars from the RAVE survey and two previously published datasets. We use cosmological simulations of disk galaxy formation to motivate our assumptions on the shape of the velocity distribution, allowing for a significantly more precise measurement of the escape velocity compared to previous studies. We find that the escape velocity lies within the range $498\kms < \ve < 608 \kms$ (90 per cent confidence), with a median likelihood of $544\kms$. The fact that $\ve^2$ is significantly greater than $2\vc^2$ (where $\vc=220\kms$ is the local circular velocity) implies that there must be a significant amount of mass exterior to the Solar circle, i.e. this convincingly demonstrates the presence of a dark halo in the Galaxy. For a simple isothermal halo, one can calculate that the minimum radial extent is $\sim58$ kpc. We use our constraints on $\ve$ to determine the mass of the Milky Way halo for three halo profiles. For example, an adiabatically contracted NFW halo model results in a virial mass of $1.42^{+1.14}_{-0.54}\times10^{12}M_\odot$ and virial radius of $305^{+66}_{-45}$ kpc (90 per cent confidence). For this model the circular velocity at the virial radius is $142^{+31}_{-21}\kms$. We present the first data release of the Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE), an ambitious spectroscopic survey to measure radial velocities and stellar atmosphere parameters (temperature, metallicity, surface gravity) of up to one million stars using the 6dF multi-object spectrograph on the 1.2-m UK Schmidt Telescope of the Anglo-Australian Observatory (AAO). The RAVE program started in 2003, obtaining medium resolution spectra (median R=7,500) in the Ca-triplet region ($\lambda\lambda$ 8,410--8,795 \AA) for southern hemisphere stars drawn from the Tycho-2 and SuperCOSMOS catalogs, in the magnitude range 9

The study of gas outside the plane of disc galaxies is crucial to understanding the circulation of material within a galaxy and between galaxies and the intergalactic environment. We present new HI observations of the edge-on galaxy NGC891, which show an extended halo component lagging behind the disc in rotation. We compare these results for NGC891 with other detections of gaseous haloes. Both microlensing surveys and radio-frequency observations of gas flow imply that the inner Milky Way is completely dominated by baryons, contrary to the predictions of standard cold dark matter (CDM) cosmology. We investigate the predictions of the Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) formula for the Galaxy given the measured baryon distribution. Satisfactory fits to the observationally determined terminal-velocity curve are obtained for different choices of the MOND's interpolating function mu(x). However, with simple analytical forms of mu(x), the local circular speed v_c(R_0) can be as large as 220 km/s only for values of the parameter a_0 that are excluded by observations of NGC 3198. Only a numerically specified interpolating function can produce v_c(R_0)=220 km/s, which is therefore an upper limit in MOND, while the asymptotic velocity is predicted to be v_c(infty)=170+-5 km/s. The data are probably not consistent with the functional form of mu(x) that has been explored as a toy model in the framework of Bekenstein's covariant theory of gravity., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We have obtained Integral Field Spectroscopy for 23 spiral bulges using INTEGRAL on the William Herschel Telescope and SPIRAL on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. This is the first 2D survey directed solely at the bulges of spiral galaxies. Eleven galaxies of the sample do not have previous measurements of the stellar velocity dispersion (sigma*). These data are designed to complement our Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph program for estimating black hole masses in the range 10^6-10^8M_sun using gas kinematics from nucleated disks. These observations will serve to derive the stellar dynamical bulge properties using the traditional Mgb and CaII triplets. We use both Cross Correlation and Maximum Penalized Likelihood to determine projected sigma* in these systems and present radial velocity fields, major axis rotation curves, curves of growth and sigma* fields. Using the Cross Correlation to extract the low order 2D stellar dynamics we generally see coherent radial rotation and irregular velocity dispersion fields suggesting that sigma* is a non-trivial parameter to estimate., Comment: 11 pages, 30 figures, accepted for publication in ApJS

We investigate the central regions of 23 spiral galaxies using archival NICMOS imaging and STIS spectroscopy. The sample is taken from our program to determine the masses of central massive black holes (MBH) in 54 nearby spiral galaxies. Stars are likely to contribute significantly to any dynamical central mass concentration that we find in our MBH program and this paper is part of a series to investigate the nuclear properties of these galaxies. We use the Nuker law to fit surface brightness profiles, derived from the NICMOS images, to look for nuclear star clusters and find possible extended sources in 3 of the 23 galaxies studied (13 per cent). The fact that this fraction is lower than that inferred from optical Hubble Space Telescope studies is probably due to the greater spatial resolution of those studies. Using R-H and J-H colors and equivalent widths of H-alpha emission (from the STIS spectra) we investigate the nature of the stellar population with evolutionary models. Under the assumption of hot stars ionizing the gas, as opposed to a weak AGN, we find that there are young stellar populations (~10-20 Myr) however these data do not allow us to determine what percentage of the total nuclear stellar population they form. Also, in an attempt to find any unknown AGN we use [N II] and [S II] line flux ratios (relative to H-alpha) and find tentative evidence for weak AGN in NGC 1300 and NGC 4536., Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures. We present Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph emission-line spectra of the central regions of the spiral galaxies NGC 1300 and NGC 2748. From the derived kinematics of the nuclear gas we have found evidence for central supermassive black holes in both galaxies. The estimated mass of the black hole in NGC 1300 is 6.6 (+6.3, -3.2) x 10^7 solar masses and in NGC 2748 is 4.4 (+3.5, -3.6) x 10^7 solar masses (both at the 95% confidence level). These two black hole mass estimates contribute to the poorly sampled low-mass end of the nuclear black hole mass spectrum., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

[Abridged] We present a novel technique, dubbed FiEstAS, to estimate the underlying density field from a discrete set of sample points in an arbitrary multidimensional space. FiEstAS assigns a volume to each point by means of a binary tree. Density is then computed by integrating over an adaptive kernel. As a first test, we construct several Monte Carlo realizations of a Hernquist profile and recover the particle density in both real and phase space. At a given point, Poisson noise causes the unsmoothed estimates to fluctuate by a factor ~2 regardless of the number of particles. This spread can be reduced to about 1 dex (~26 per cent) by our smoothing procedure. [...] We conclude that our algorithm accurately measure the phase-space density up to the limit where discreteness effects render the simulation itself unreliable. Computationally, FiEstAS is orders of magnitude faster than the method based on Delaunay tessellation that Arad et al. employed, making it practicable to recover smoothed density estimates for sets of 10^9 points in 6 dimensions., Comment: 12 pages, 18 figures, submitted to MNRAS. We present surface photometry for the central regions of a sample of 48 spiral galaxies (mostly unbarred and barred of types Sbc or Sc) observed with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on board the Hubble Space Telescope. Surface brightness profiles were derived and modeled with a Nuker law. We also analyzed archival Wide Field Planetary Camera~2 images with a larger field of view, available for 18 galaxies in our sample. We modeled the extracted bulge surface brightness profiles with an exponential, a de Vaucouleurs or a Sersic profile. In agreement with previous studies, we find that bulges of Sbc galaxies fall into two categories: bulges well described by an exponential profile and those well described by an de Vaucouleurs profile. Only one galaxy requires the use of a more general Sersic profile to properly describe the bulge. Nuclear photometrically distinct components are found in ~55% of the galaxies. For those that we classify as star clusters based on their resolved extent we find absolute magnitudes that are brighter on average than those previously identified in spiral galaxies. This might be due to a bias in our sample toward star forming galaxies, combined with a trend for star forming galaxies to host brighter central clusters., Comment: 33 pages, 7 figures. A naive extension to MOND of the standard computation of the two-body relaxation time Tb implies that Tb is comparable to the crossing time regardless of the number N of stars in the system. This computation is questionable in view of the non-linearity of MOND's field equation. A non-standard approach to the calculation of Tb is developed that can be extended to MOND whenever discreteness noise generates force fluctuations that are small compared to the mean-field force. It is shown that this approach yields standard Newtonian results for systems in which the mean density profile is either plane-parallel or spherical. In the plane-parallel case we find that in the deep-MOND regime Tbb scales with N as in the Newtonian case, but is shorter by the square of the factor by which MOND enhances the gravitational force over its Newtonian value for the same system. Application of these results to dwarf galaxies and groups and clusters of galaxies reveals that in MOND luminosity segregation should be far advanced in groups and clusters of galaxies, two body relaxation should have substantially modified the density profiles of galaxy groups, while objects with masses in excess of ~10M_sun should have spiralled to the centres of dwarf galaxies.(Abridged), Comment: 8 pages, accepted by MNRAS

We present HST/STIS spectra of the Sbc spiral galaxy NGC 4041 which were used to map the velocity field of the gas in its nuclear region. We detect the presence of a compact (r~0.4" ~40 pc), high surface brightness, rotating nuclear disk co-spatial with a nuclear star cluster. The disk is characterized by a rotation curve with a peak to peak amplitude of ~40 km/s and is systematically blueshifted by 10 - 20 km/s with respect to the galaxy systemic velocity. With the standard assumption of constant mass-to-light ratio and with the nuclear disk inclination taken from the outer disk, we find that a dark point mass of 1(-0.7;+0.6) 10^7 Msun is needed to reproduce the observed rotation curve. However the observed blueshift suggests the possibility that the nuclear disk could be dynamically decoupled. Following this line of reasoning we relax the standard assumptions and find that the kinematical data can be accounted for by the stellar mass provided that either the central mass-to-light ratio is increased by a factor of ~2 or that the inclination is allowed to vary. This model results in a 3 sigma upper limit of 6 10^6 Msun on the mass of any nuclear black hole. Overall, our analysis only allows us to set an upper limit of 2 10^7 Msun on the mass of the nuclear black hole. If this upper limit is taken in conjunction with an estimated bulge B magnitude of -17.7 and with a central stellar velocity dispersion of 95 km/s, then these results are not inconsistent with both the MBH-Lsph and the MBH-sigma correlations. Constraints on black hole masses in spiral galaxies of types as late as Sbc are still very scarce and therefore the present result adds an important new datapoint to our understanding of black hole demography., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We show that spiral waves in galaxy discs churn the stars and gas in a manner that largely preserves the overall angular momentum distribution and leads to little increase in random motion. Changes in the angular momenta of individual stars are typically as large as ~50% over the lifetime of the disk. The changes are concentrated around the corotation radius for an individual spiral wave, but since transient waves with a wide range of pattern speeds develop in rapid succession, the entire disk is affected. This behaviour has profound consequences for the metallicity gradients with radius in both stars and gas. The ISM is also stirred by the same mechanism. Cold, dense clouds of gas have been proposed as baryonic candidates for the dark matter in Galactic haloes, and have also been invoked in the Galactic disc as an explanation for the excess faint sub-mm sources detected by SCUBA. Even if their dust-to-gas ratio is only a small percentage of that in conventional gas clouds, these dense systems would be opaque to visible radiation. This presents the possibility of detecting them by looking for occultations of background stars. We examine the possibility that the data sets of microlensing experiments searching for massive compact halo objects can also be used to search for occultation signatures by cold clouds. We compute the rate and timescale distribution of stellar transits by clouds in the Galactic disc and halo. We find that, for cloud parameters typically advocated by theoretical models, thousands of transit events should already exist within microlensing survey data sets. We examine the seasonal modulation in the rate caused by the Earth's orbital motion and find it provides an excellent probe of whether detected clouds are of disc or halo origin., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. The microlensing optical depth to Baade's Window constrains the minimum total mass in baryonic matter within the Solar circle to be greater than 3.9 x 10^{10} solar masses, assuming the inner Galaxy is barred with viewing angle of roughly 20 degrees. From the kinematics of solar neighbourhood stars, the local surface density of dark matter is about 30 +/- 15 solar masses per square parsec. We construct cuspy haloes normalised to the local dark matter density and calculate the circular-speed curve of the halo in the inner Galaxy. This is added in quadrature to the rotation curve provided by the stellar and ISM discs, together with a bar sufficiently massive so that the baryonic matter in the inner Galaxy reproduces the microlensing optical depth. Such models violate the observational constraint provided by the tangent-velocity data in the inner Galaxy (typically at radii 2-4 kpc). The high baryonic contribution required by the microlensing is consistent with implications from hydrodynamical modelling and the pattern speed of the Galactic bar. We conclude that the cuspy haloes favoured by the Cold Dark Matter cosmology (and its variants) are inconsistent with the observational data on the Galaxy., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figures, MNRAS (submitted)

We describe an on-going HST program aimed at determining the relationship between the nuclear black hole mass and bulge mass in spiral galaxies. We have selected a volume limited sample of 54 nearby spiral galaxies for which we already have ground based emission line rotation curves, CCD surface photometry and radio maps. We are now obtaining HST/STIS longslit observations of each of the galaxies in the sample in order to determine the nuclear Halpha rotation curve at high (~0.1") spatial resolution. We will use these data to measure the unresolved dark mass concentration at the nucleus of each object. In the generic CDM cosmogony, dark-matter halos emerge too lumpy and centrally concentrated to host observed galactic disks. Moreover, disks are predicted to be smaller than those observed. We argue that the resolution of these problems may lie with a combination of the effects of protogalactic disks, which would have had a mass comparable to that of the inner dark halo and be plausibly non-axisymmetric, and of massive galactic winds, which at early times may have carried off as many baryons as a galaxy now contains. A host of observational phenomena, from quasar absorption lines and intracluster gas through the G-dwarf problem point to the existence of such winds. Dynamical interactions will homogenize and smooth the inner halo, and the observed disk will be the relic of a massive outflow. The inner halo expanded after absorbing energy and angular momentum from the ejected material. Observed disks formed at the very end of the galaxy formation process, after the halo had been reduced to a minor contributor to the central mass budget and strong radial streaming of the gas had died down., Comment: 5 pages; submitted to MNRAS

The paper claimed that significant radial migration of stars in a stellar disk like that of the Milky Way could not occur. We now think that while the treatment of the effects of molecular clouds was correct, the paper seriously underestimated the ability of spiral arms to shift the radii of stars that corotate with them. The simplest interpretation of the microlensing events towards the Large Magellanic Cloud detected by the MACHO and EROS collaborations is that about one third of the halo of our own Milky Way galaxy exists in the form of objects of around 0.5 solar mass. There are grave problems with this interpretation. A normal stellar population of 0.5 solar mass stars should be visible. The other obvious candidate for the lenses is a population of white dwarfs. But, the precursor population must have polluted the interstellar medium with metals, in conflict with current population II abundance. Here, we propose a more conventional, but at the moment more speculative, explanation. Some of the lenses are stars in the disk of the Milky Way. They lie along the line of sight to the LMC because of warping and flaring of the Galactic disk. Depending on its scalelength and ellipticity, the disk's optical depth may lie anywhere between $0.2 \times 10^{-7}$ and $0.9 \times 10^{-7}$. Together with contributions from the LMC disk and bar and perhaps even intervening stellar contaminants, the total optical depth may match the data within the uncertainties. Microlensing towards the LMC may be telling us more about the distorted structure and stellar populations of the outer Milky Way disk than the composition of the dark halo., Comment: 16 pages, 3 included figures, in press at The Astrophysical Journal (Letters). We examine the left-right asymmetry in the cleaned COBE/DIRBE near-infrared data of the inner Galaxy and show (i) that the Galactic bar is probably not seen very nearly end-on, and (ii) that even if it is, it is not highly elongated. The assumption of constant mass-to-light ratio is used to derive simulated terminal-velocity plots for the ISM from our model luminosity distributions. By comparing these plots with observed terminal velocities we determine the mass-to-light ratio of the near-IR bulge and disk. Assuming that all this mass contributes to gravitational microlensing we compute optical depths $\tau$ for microlensing in Galactic-centre fields. For three models with bar major axis between $10\deg-25\deg$ from the Sun-Galactic Center line, the resulting optical depths in Baade's window lie in the range $0.83\times10^{-6} \lta \tau \lta 0.89\times10^{-6}$ for main-sequence stars and $1.2\times10^{-6} \lta \tau \lta 1.3\times10^{-6}$ for red-clump giants. We discuss a number of uncertainties including possible variations of the near-infrared mass-to-light ratio. We conclude that, although the values predicted from analyzing the COBE and gas velocity data are inconsistent at the $2-2.5\sigma$ level with recent observational determinations of $\tau$, we believe they should be taken seriously., Comment: 9 pages, TeX. 7 figures (gif). CCD surface photometry and extensive long-slit spectroscopy are used to construct detailed models of the flattened ellipticals NGC 720, 1052, and 4697. The models are combined with the Jeans equations to yield predicted fields of line-of-sight velocity dispersion and streaming velocity. By comparing these fields with observed velocities, it is concluded that none of these systems can have isotropic velocity dispersion tensors, and diminishing the assumed inclination of any given galaxy tends to decrease the line-of-sight velocity dispersion and, counterintuitively, to increase the line-of-sight rotation speeds. The ratio of the line-of-sight velocity dispersion along the minor axis to that along the major axis is found to be a sensitive diagnostic of the importance of a third integral for the galaxy's structure.
