Abstract

Purpose To address the lack of prospective data on the real-life clinical application of trans-arterial radioembolization (TARE) in Europe, the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe (CIRSE) initiated the prospective observational study CIRSE Registry for SIR-Spheres® Therapy (CIRT). Materials and Methods Patients were enrolled from 1 January 2015 till 31 December 2017. Eligible patients were adult patients treated with TARE with Y90 resin microspheres for primary or metastatic liver tumours. Patients were followed up for 24 months after treatment, whereas data on the clinical context of TARE, overall survival (OS) and safety were collected. Results Totally, 1027 patients were analysed. 68.2% of the intention of treatment was palliative. Up to half of the patients received systemic therapy and/or locoregional treatments prior to TARE (53.1%; 38.3%). Median overall survival (OS) was reported per cohort and was 16.5 months (95% confidence interval (CI) 14.2–19.3) for hepatocellular carcinoma, 14.6 months (95% CI 10.9–17.9) for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma. For liver metastases, median OS for colorectal cancer was 9.8 months (95% CI 8.3–12.9), 5.6 months for pancreatic cancer (95% CI 4.1–6.6), 10.6 months (95% CI 7.3–14.4) for breast cancer, 14.6 months (95% CI 7.3–21.4) for melanoma and 33.1 months (95% CI 22.1–nr) for neuroendocrine tumours. Statistically significant prognostic factors in terms of OS include the presence of ascites, cirrhosis, extra-hepatic disease, patient performance status (Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group), number of chemotherapy lines prior to TARE and tumour burden. Thirty-day mortality rate was 1.0%. 2.5% experienced adverse events grade 3 or 4 within 30 days after TARE. Conclusion In the real-life clinical setting, TARE is largely considered to be a part of a palliative treatment strategy across indications and provides an excellent safety profile. Abstract

Indexación: Scopus. Introduction: Some authors argue that empathy in medical students undergoes a declining process from the third year of medical school. On the other hand, some authors have found that such a decline does not occur. A working hypothesis is proposed which consists of several coexisting empathic behavior models. Materials and methods. Exploratory and transversal work was included as part of this study. The Empathy scale for medical students (eejm-s) was applied amongst medical students in three medical faculties of Colombia, El Salvador and Argentina between 2018–2019. The mean values of each year of study were subjected to regression tests with previously standardized data. An analysis of variance (Anova) was first performed to determine if the coefficient of the equation was different from zero and sequential Anova was performed to determine the type of curve and distribution of the data. Results: The distribution of the means, through the years of study, presented different types of regression curves between the different universities used in the study, as well as in each of its components for empathy. Conclusion: Differing types of empathic behaviour existed (different regression curves) in the means of the years of study between the different faculties and the working hypothesis proved to be true. https://revistas.urosario.edu.co/index.php/revsalud/article/view/9258

Abstract

- Although Mathematics is a pillar which many of the subjects of any Engineering degree are based on, and in spite of being used as a tool in almost all of such subjects, it is sometimes difficult for students to assimilate the mathematical concepts. Since this relationship between Engineering and Mathematics is unavoidable, a consortium of universities from different countries is working on a project, EngiMath, to, on the one hand, make it easier for teachers to teach Mathematics in the first years of Engineering degrees; and, on the other hand, to promote study from a “student-centric” point of view. As a previous step to the development of educational material that fulfills these purposes, a study of the students' feelings about Mathematics and their experience in studying them has been carried out.

71. Effect of operating conditions on the drying of fine and ultrafine sand in a fountain confined conical spouted bed

Abstract

A study has been carried out on the influence process conditions and design parameters have on the drying in a conical spouted bed. The study analyses two fractions of silica sand obtained as a by-product in the production of kaolin. Both fractions are made up of fine particles but the average size of one of them is significantly lower and, accordingly, has been named ultrafine sand, whereas the other one has been named fine sand. Optimum parameters have been determined for the draft tube and the fountain confiner. Drying time is reduced when the spout region is enlarged. A distance between the bed surface and the lower end of the confiner in the 0.10–0.15 m range and a confiner of 0.5–0.9 m length minimise the drying time. Longer distances do not avoid entrainment, and shorter distances lead to higher pressure drop and minimum spouting velocity. Longer fountain confiners do not reduce significantly the drying time. Draft tubes with a reduced aperture ratio lead to longer drying times due to their adverse effect on the gas–solid contact. Abstract

The genetic background of childhood body mass index (BMI), and the extent to which the well-known associations of childhood BMI with adult diseases are explained by shared genetic factors, are largely unknown. We performed a genome-wide association study meta-analysis of BMI in 61,111 children aged between 2 and 10 years. Twenty-five independent loci reached genome-wide significance in the combined discovery and replication analyses. Two of these, located near NEDD4L and SLC45A3, have not previously been reported in relation to either childhood or adult BMI. Positive genetic correlations of childhood BMI with birth weight and adult BMI, waist-to-hip ratio, diastolic blood pressure and type 2 diabetes were detected (Rg ranging from 0.11 to 0.76, P-values <0.002). A negative genetic correlation of childhood BMI with age at menarche was observed. Our results suggest that the biological processes underlying childhood BMI largely, but not completely, overlap with those underlying adult BMI. The well-known observational associations of BMI in childhood with cardio-metabolic diseases in adulthood may reflect partial genetic overlap, but in light of previous evidence, it is also likely that they are explained through phenotypic continuity of BMI from childhood into adulthood.

Abstract

Interventional oncology represents a relatively new clinical discipline based upon minimally invasive therapies applicable to almost every human organ and disease. Over the last several decades, rapidly evolving research developments have introduced a newer generation of treatment devices, reagents, and image-guidance systems to expand the armamentarium of interventional oncology across a wide spectrum of disease sites, offering potential cure, control, or palliative care for many types of cancer patients. Due to the widespread use of locoregional procedures, a comprehensive review of the methodologic and technical considerations to optimize patient selection with the aim of performing a safe procedure is mandatory. This article summarizes the expert discussion and report from the Mediterranean Interventional Oncology Live Congress (MIOLive 2020) held in Rome, Italy, integrating evidence-reported literature and experience-based perceptions as a means for providing guidance on prudent ways to reduce complications. The aim of the paper is to provide an updated guiding tool not only to residents and fellows but also to colleagues approaching locoregional treatments.

Abstract

In this paper, a new method for generating test reference year (TRY) from the measured meteorological variables is proposed. Hourly recorded data of air temperature, relative humidity and wind velocity for two stations, Valladolid and Madrid (Spain) were selected to develop the method and a TRY was obtained. Monthly average solar radiation values were calculated taking into account the temperature and solar radiation correlations. Four different methodologies were used to evaluate hourly global solar radiation from hourly weather data of temperature and, as a consequence, four different TRYs with common data sets of temperature, relative humidity and wind velocity were generated for Valladolid and Madrid (Spain) stations. In order to evaluate the four different methodologies, TRYs data were compared with long-term measured data series using statistical estimators such as average, standard deviation, root mean square error (rinse) and mean bias error (robe). Festa and Ratto and the TAG model, from Aguiar and Collares-Pereira, respectively, turned out to be the best methods for generating hourly solar irradiation data. The best performance was shown by the TRY0 year which was based on the solar radiation models mentioned above. The results show that the best reference year for each site varies with the season and the characteristics of the station. Keywords: Meteorological variables; Test reference year; Models
