The Hyades stream has long been thought to be a dispersed vestige of the Hyades cluster. However, recent analyses of the parallax distribution, of the mass function, and of the action-space distribution of stream stars have shown it to be rather composed of orbits trapped at a resonance of a density disturbance. This resonant scenario should leave a clearly different signature in the element abundances of stream stars than the dispersed cluster scenario, since the Hyades cluster is chemically homogeneous. Here, we study the metalllicty as well as the element abundances of Li, Na, Mg, Fe, Zr, Ba, La, Ce, Nd, and Eu for a random sample of stars belonging to the Hyades stream, and compare them with those of stars from the Hyades cluster. From this analysis: (i) we independently confirm that the Hyades stream cannot be solely composed of stars originating in the Hyades cluster; (ii) we show that some stars from the Hyades stream nevertheless have abundances compatible with an origin in the cluster; (iii) we emphasize that the use of Li as a chemical tag of the cluster origin of main-sequence stars is very efficient in the range 5500 - 6200 K, since the Li sequence in the Hyades cluster is very tight; (iv) we show that, while this evaporated population has a metallicity excess of ~0.2 dex w.r.t. the local thin disk population, identical to that of the Hyades cluster, the remainder of the Hyades stream population has still a metallicity excess of ~0.06 to 0.15 dex, consistent with an origin in the inner Galaxy; (v) we show that the Hyades stream can be interpreted as an inner 4:1 resonance of the spiral pattern: this then also reproduces an orbital family compatible with the Sirius stream, and places the origin of the Hyades stream up to 1 kpc inwards from the solar radius, which might explain the observed metallicity excess of the stream population., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS; v2 differs from v1 regarding the method used for tagging stars evaporated from the cluster. Using a sample of 213,713 stars from the Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) survey, limited to a distance of 2 kpc from the Sun and to |z|<1 kpc, we report the detection of a velocity gradient of disc stars in the fourth quadrant, directed radially from the Galactic centre. In the direction of the Galactic centre, we apply a simple method independent of stellar proper motions and of Galactic parameters to assess the existence of this gradient in the RAVE data. This velocity gradient corresponds to |K+C| < 3 km/s/kpc, where K and C are the Oort constants measuring the local divergence and radial shear of the velocity field, respectively. In order to illustrate the effect, assuming a zero radial velocity of the Local Standard of Rest we then reconstruct the two-dimensional Galactocentric velocity maps using two different sets of proper motions and photometric distances based either on isochrone fitting or on K-band magnitudes, and considering two sets of values for the Galactocentric radius of the Sun and local circular speed. Further observational confirmation of our finding with line-of-sight velocities of stars at low latitudes, together with further modelling, should help constrain the non-axisymmetric components of the Galactic potential, including the bar, the spiral arms and possibly the ellipticity of the dark halo., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We analyze a sample of 82850 stars from the RAVE survey, with well-determined velocities and stellar parameters, to isolate a sample of 18026 high-probability thin-disc dwarfs within 600 pc of the Sun. We derive space motions for these stars, and deduce the solar space velocity with respect to the Local Standard of Rest. The peculiar solar motion we derive is in excellent agreement in radial $U_{\odot}$ and vertical $W_{\odot}$ peculiar motions with other recent determinations. Our derived tangential peculiar velocity, $V_{\odot}$ agrees with very recent determinations, which favour values near 13 km s$^{-1}$, in disagreement with earlier studies. The derived values are not significantly dependent on the comparison sample chosen, or on the method of analysis. Very metal-poor stars are of obvious importance for many problems in chemical evolution, star formation, and galaxy evolution. Finding complete samples of such stars which are also bright enough to allow high-precision individual analyses is of considerable interest. We demonstrate here that stars with iron abundances [Fe/H] < -2 dex, and down to below -4 dex, can be efficiently identified within the Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) survey of bright stars, without requiring additional confirmatory observations. We determine a calibration of the equivalent width of the Calcium triplet lines measured from the RAVE spectra onto true [Fe/H], using high spectral resolution data for a subset of the stars. These RAVE iron abundances are accurate enough to obviate the need for confirmatory higher-resolution spectroscopy. Our initial study has identified 631 stars with [Fe/H] <= -2, from a RAVE database containing approximately 200,000 stars. This RAVE-based sample is complete for stars with [Fe/H] < -2.5, allowing statistical sample analysis. We identify three stars with [Fe/H] <= -4. Of these, one was already known to be `ultra metal-poor', one is a known carbon-enhanced metal-poor star, but we obtain [Fe/H]= -4.0, rather than the published [Fe/H]=-3.3, and derive [C/Fe] = +0.9, and [N/Fe] = +3.2, and the third is at the limit of our S/N. We have chosen the name of GYES, one of the mythological giants with one hundred arms, offspring of Gaia and Uranus, for our instrument study of a multifibre spectrograph for the prime focus of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. Such an instrument could provide an excellent ground-based complement for the Gaia mission and a northern complement to the HERMES project on the AAT. The CFHT is well known for providing a stable prime focus environment, with a large field of view, which has hosted several imaging instruments, but has never hosted a multifibre spectrograph. Building upon the experience gained at GEPI with FLAMES-Giraffe and X-Shooter, we are investigating the feasibility of a high multiplex spectrograph (about 500 fibres) over a field of view 1 degree in diameter. We are investigating an instrument with resolution in the range 15000 to 30000, which should provide accurate chemical abundances for stars down to 16th magnitude and radial velocities, accurate to 1 km/s for fainter stars. The study is led by GEPI-Observatoire de Paris with a contribution from Oxford for the study of the positioner. The financing for the study comes from INSU CSAA and Observatoire de Paris. We study the eccentricity distribution of a thick disc sample of stars observed in the Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) and compare it to that expected in four simulations of thick disc formation in the literature (accretion of satellites, heating of a primordial thin disc during a merger, radial migration, and gas-rich mergers), as compiled by Sales et al. (2009). We find that the distribution of our sample is peaked at low eccentricities and falls off smoothly and rather steeply to high eccentricities. This distribution is fairly robust to changes in distances, thin disc contamination, and the particular thick disc sample used. Our results are inconsistent with what is expected for the pure accretion simulation, since we find that the dynamics of local thick disc stars implies that the majority must have formed "in situ". Of the remaining models explored, the eccentricity distribution of our stars appears to be most consistent with the gas-rich merger case., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We report on the discovery of new members of nearby young moving groups, exploiting the full power of combining the RAVE survey with several stellar age diagnostic methods and follow-up high-resolution optical spectroscopy. The results include the identification of one new and five likely members of the beta Pictoris moving group, ranging from spectral types F9 to M4 with the majority being M dwarfs, one K7 likely member of the epsilon Cha group and two stars in the Tuc-Hor association. Based on the positive identifications we foreshadow a great potential of the RAVE database in progressing toward a full census of young moving groups in the solar neighbourhood., Comment: 7 pages, 1 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Theories of thick disk formation can be differentiated by measurements of stellar elemental abundances. We have undertaken a study of metal-poor stars selected from the RAVE spectroscopic survey of bright stars to establish whether or not there is a significant population of metal-poor thick-disk stars ([Fe/H] <~ -1.0) and to measure their elemental abundances. In this paper, we present abundances of four alpha-elements (Mg, Si, Ca, Ti) and iron for a subsample of 212 RGB and 31 RC/HB stars from this study. We find that the [alpha/Fe] ratios are enhanced implying that enrichment proceeded by purely core-collapse supernovae. This requires that star formation in each star forming region had a short duration. The relative lack of scatter in the [alpha/Fe] ratios implies good mixing in the ISM prior to star formation. In addition, the ratios resemble that of the halo, indicating that the halo and thick disk share a similar massive star IMF. We conclude that the alpha enhancement of the metal-poor thick disk implies that direct accretion of stars from dwarf galaxies similar to surviving dwarf galaxies today did not play a major role in the formation of the thick disk., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, accepted by ApJ Letters

The RAdial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) is a spectroscopic survey of the Milky Way. We use the subsample of spectra with spectroscopically determined values of stellar parameters to determine the distances to these stars. The list currently contains 235,064 high quality spectra which show no peculiarities and belong to 210,872 different stars. The numbers will grow as the RAVE survey progresses. The public version of the catalog will be made available through the CDS services along with the ongoing RAVE public data releases. The distances are determined with a method based on the work by Breddels et al.~(2010). Here we assume that the star undergoes a standard stellar evolution and that its spectrum shows no peculiarities. The refinements include: the use of either of the three isochrone sets, a better account of the stellar ages and masses, use of more realistic errors of stellar parameter values, and application to a larger dataset. The derived distances of both dwarfs and giants match within ~21% to the astrometric distances of Hipparcos stars and to the distances of observed members of open and globular clusters. Multiple observations of a fraction of RAVE stars show that repeatability of the derived distances is even better, with half of the objects showing a distance scatter of \simlt 11%. RAVE dwarfs are ~300 pc from the Sun, and giants are at distances of 1 to 2 kpc, and up to 10 kpc. This places the RAVE dataset between the more local Geneva-Copenhagen survey and the more distant and fainter SDSS sample. As such it is ideal to address some of the fundamental questions of Galactic structure and evolution in the pre-Gaia era. We devise a new method for the detection of double-lined binary stars in a sample of the Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) survey spectra. The method is both tested against extensive simulations based on synthetic spectra, and compared to direct visual inspection of all RAVE spectra. It is based on the properties and shape of the cross-correlation function, and is able to recover ~80% of all binaries with an orbital period of order 1 day. Systems with periods up to 1 year are still within the detection reach. We have applied the method to 25,850 spectra of the RAVE second data release and found 123 double-lined binary candidates, only eight of which are already marked as binaries in the SIMBAD database. Among the candidates, there are seven that show spectral features consistent with the RS CVn type (solar type with active chromosphere) and seven that might be of W UMa type (over-contact binaries). One star, HD 101167, seems to be a triple system composed of three nearly identical G-type dwarfs. (Abridged) Aims:We develop a method for deriving distances from spectroscopic data and obtaining full 6D phase-space coordinates for the RAVE survey's second data release. Methods: We used stellar models combined with atmospheric properties from RAVE (Teff, logg and [Fe/H]) and (J-Ks) photometry from archival sources to derive absolute magnitudes. We are able to derive the full 6D phase-space coordinates for a large sample of RAVE stars. This method is tested with artificial data, Hipparcos trigonometric parallaxes and observations of the open cluster M67. Results: When we applied our method to a set of 16 146 stars, we found that 25% (4 037) of the stars have relative (statistical) distance errors of < 35%, while 50% (8 073) and 75% (12 110) have relative (statistical) errors smaller than 45% and 50%, respectively. Our various tests show that we can reliably estimate distances for main-sequence stars, but there is an indication of potential systematic problems with giant stars. For the main-sequence star sample (defined as those with log(g) > 4), 25% (1 744) have relative distance errors < 31%, while 50% (3 488) and 75% (5 231) have relative errors smaller than 36% and 42%, respectively. Our full dataset shows the expected decrease in the metallicity of stars as a function of distance from the Galactic plane. The known kinematic substructures in the U and V velocity components of nearby dwarf stars are apparent in our dataset, confirming the accuracy of our data and the reliability of our technique. We provide independent measurements of the orientation of the UV velocity ellipsoid and of the solar motion, and they are in very good agreement with previous work. We find that a steady state bar induces transient features at low velocities in the solar neighborhood velocity distribution due to the initial response of the disc, following the formation of the bar. We associate these velocity streams with two quasi-periodic orbital families, librating around the stable x_1(1) and x_1(2) orbits near the bar's outer Lindblad resonance (OLR). In a reference frame moving with the bar, these otherwise stationary orbits precess on a timescale dependent on the strength of the bar, consistent with predictions from a simple Hamiltonian model for the resonance. This behavior allows the two orbital families to reach the solar neighborhood and manifest themselves as clumps in the u-v plane moving away from (x_1(2)), and toward (x_1(1)) the Galactic center. Depending on the bar parameters and time since its formation, this model is consistent with the Pleiades and Coma Berenices, or Pleiades and Sirius moving groups seen in the Hipparcos stellar velocity distribution, if the Milky Way bar angle is 30

CONTEXT: The RAVE spectroscopic survey for galactic structure and evolution obtains 8400-8800 Ang spectra at 7500 resolving power at the UK Schmidt Telescope using the 6dF multi-fiber positioner. More than 300,000 925 deg southern stars have been observed to date. AIMS: This paper presents the first intrinsic examination of stellar spectra from the RAVE survey, aimed at evaluating their diagnostic potential for peculiar stars and at contributing to the general understanding of Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs). METHODS: We used the multi-epoch spectra for all seven LBVs observed, between 2005 and 2008, in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) by the RAVE survey. RESULTS: We demonstrate that RAVE spectra possess significant diagnostic potential when applied to peculiar stars and, in particular, LBVs. The behaviour of the radial velocities for both emission and absorption lines, and the spectral changes between outburst and quiescence states are described and found to agree with evidence gathered at more conventional wavelengths. The wind outflow signatures and their variability are investigated, with multi-components detected in S Doradus. Photoionisation modelling of the rich emission line spectrum of R 127 shows evidence of a massive detached ionised shell that was ejected during the 1982-2000 outburst. Surface inhomogeneities in the nuclear-processed material, brought to the surface by heavy mass loss, could have been observed in S Doradus, even if alternative explanations are possible. We also detect the transition from quiescence to outburst state in R 71. We look for observational signatures that could discriminate between Newtonian and modified Newtonian (MOND) dynamics in the Milky Way, in view of the advent of large astrometric and spectroscopic surveys. Indeed, a typical signature of MOND is an apparent disk of "phantom" dark matter, which is uniquely correlated with the visible disk-density distribution. Due to this phantom dark disk, Newtonian models with a spherical halo have different signatures from MOND models close to the Galactic plane. The models can thus be differentiated by measuring dynamically (within Newtonian dynamics) the disk surface density at the solar radius, the radial mass gradient within the disk, or the velocity ellipsoid tilt angle above the Galactic plane. Using the most realistic possible baryonic mass model for the Milky Way, we predict that, if MOND applies, the local surface density measured by a Newtonist will be approximately 78 Msun/pc2 within 1.1 kpc of the Galactic plane, the dynamically measured disk scale-length will be enhanced by a factor of 1.25 with respect to the visible disk scale-length, and the local vertical tilt of the velocity ellipsoid at 1 kpc above the plane will be approximately 6 degrees. None of these tests can be conclusive for the present-day accuracy of Milky Way data, but they will be of prime interest with the advent of large surveys such as GAIA., Comment: 5 pages

We define new potential-density pairs and examine the impact of the potential flattening on the vertical velocity ellipsoid tilt, $\delta$. By means of numerical integrations and analytical calculations, we estimate $\delta$ in a variety of galactic potentials. We show that at 1 kpc above the Galactic plane at the solar radius, $\delta$ can differ by 5 degrees, depending on whether the dark matter halo is flat or spherical. This result excludes the possibility of an extremely flattened Galactic dark halo., Comment: accepted Astron. Astroph

We perform numerical simulations of a stellar galactic disk with initial conditions chosen to represent an unrelaxed population which might have been left following a merger. Stars are unevenly distributed in radial action angle, though the disk is axisymmetric. The velocity distribution in the simulated Solar neighborhood exhibits waves traveling in the direction of positive v, where u,v are the radial and tangential velocity components. As the system relaxes and structure wraps in phase space, the features seen in the uv-plane move closer together. We show that these results can be obtained also by a semi-analytical method. We propose that this model could provide an explanation for the high velocity streams seen in the Solar neighborhood at approximate v in km/s, of -60 (HR 1614), -80 (Arifyanto and Fuchs 2006), -100 (Arcturus), and -160 (Klement et al. 2008). In addition, we predict four new features at v ~ -140, -120, 40 and 60 km/s. By matching the number and positions of the observed streams, we estimate that the Milky Way disk was strongly perturbed ~1.9 Gyr ago. We present a measure of the inclination of the velocity ellipsoid at 1 kpc below the Galactic plane using a sample of red clump giants from the RAVE DR2 release. We find that the velocity ellipsoid is tilted towards the Galactic plane with an inclination of 7.3 +/-1.8 degree. We compare this value to computed inclinations for two mass models of the Milky Way. We find that our measurement is consistent with a short scale length of the stellar disc (Rd ~2 kpc) if the dark halo is oblate or with a long scale length (Rd~3 kpc) if the dark halo is prolate. Once combined with independent constraints on the flattening of the halo, our measurement suggests that the scale length is approximately halfway between these two extreme values, with a preferred range [2.5-2.7] kpc for a nearly spherical halo. Nevertheless, no model can be clearly ruled out. With the continuation of the RAVE survey, it will be possible to provide a strong constraint on the mass distribution of the Milky Way using refined measurements of the orientation of the velocity ellipsoid., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 10 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables

We have used spectra of hot stars from the RAVE Survey in order to investigate the visibility and properties of five diffuse interstellar bands previously reported in the literature. The RAVE spectroscopic survey for Galactic structure and kinematics records CCD spectra covering the 8400-8800 Ang wavelength region at 7500 resolving power. The spectra are obtained with the UK Schmidt at the AAO, equipped with the 6dF multi-fiber positioner. The DIB at 8620.4 Ang is by far the strongest and cleanest of all DIBs occurring within the RAVE wavelength range, with no interference by underlying absorption stellar lines in hot stars. It correlates so tightly with reddening that it turns out to be a reliable tool to measure it, following the relation E(B-V) = 2.72 (+/- 0.03) x E.W.(Ang), valid throughout the general interstellar medium of our Galaxy. The presence of a DIB at 8648 Ang is confirmed. Its intensity appears unrelated to reddening, in agreement with scanty and preliminary reports available in the literature, and its measurability is strongly compromised by severe blending with underlying stellar HeI doublet at 8649 Ang. The two weak DIBS at 8531 and 8572 Ang do not appear real and should actually be blends of underlying stellar lines. The very weak DIB at 8439 Ang cannot be resolved within the profile of the much stronger underlying hydrogen Paschen 18 stellar line., Comment: Accepted in press by A&A

We present the second data release of the Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE), an ambitious spectroscopic survey to measure radial velocities (RVs) and stellar atmosphere parameters of up to one million stars using the 6dF multi-object spectrograph on the 1.2-m UK Schmidt Telescope of the Anglo-Australian Observatory (AAO). It is obtaining medium resolution spectra (median R=7,500) in the Ca-triplet region (8,410--8,795 \AA) for southern hemisphere stars in the magnitude range 9

We analyze the distribution of G and K type stars towards the Galactic poles using RAVE and ELODIE radial velocities, 2MASS photometric star counts, and UCAC2 proper motions. The combination of photometric and 3D kinematic data allows us to disentangle and describe the vertical distribution of dwarfs, sub-giants and giants and their kinematics. We identify discontinuities within the kinematics and magnitude counts that separate the thin disk, thick disk and a hotter component. The respective scale heights of the thin disk and thick disk are 225$\pm$10 pc and 1048$\pm$36 pc. We also constrain the luminosity function and the kinematic distribution function. The existence of a kinematic gap between the thin and thick disks is incompatible with the thick disk having formed from the thin disk by a continuous process, such as scattering of stars by spiral arms or molecular clouds. Other mechanisms of formation of the thick disk such as `created on the spot' or smoothly `accreted' remain compatible with our findings., Comment: 15 pages, 13 EPS figures and 1 table

We present the parameters of 891 stars, mostly clump giants, including atmospheric parameters, distances, absolute magnitudes, spatial velocities, galactic orbits and ages. One part of this sample consists of local giants, within 100 pc, with atmospheric parameters either estimated from our spectroscopic observations at high resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio, or retrieved from the literature. The other part of the sample includes 523 distant stars, which we have estimated atmospheric parameters from high resolution but low signal-to-noise Echelle spectra. This new sample is kinematically unbiased, with well-defined boundaries in magnitude and colours. We revisit the basic properties of the Galactic thin disk as traced by clump giants. We find the metallicity distribution to be different from that of dwarfs, with less metal-rich stars. We find evidence for a vertical metallicity gradient of -0.31 dex/kpc and for a transition at 4-5 Gyr in both the metallicity and velocities. The age - metallicity relation (AMR), which exhibits a very low dispersion, increases smoothly from 10 to 4 Gyr, with a steeper increase for younger stars. The age-velocity relation (AVR) is characterized by the saturation of the V and W dispersions at 5 Gyr, and continuous heating in U., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures, accepted in A&A

We have searched for in-falling stellar streams on to the local Milky Way disc in the CORAVEL and RAVE surveys. The CORAVEL survey consists of local dwarf stars (Nordstrom et al. Geneva-Copenhagen survey) and local Famaey et al. giant stars. We select RAVE stars with radial velocities that are sensitive to the Galactic vertical space velocity (Galactic latitude b < -45 deg). Kuiper statistics have been employed to test the symmetry of the Galactic vertical velocity distribution functions in these samples for evidence of a net vertical flow that could be associated with a (tidal?) stream of stars with vertically coherent kinematics. In contrast to the `Field of Streams' found in the outer halo, we find that the local volumes of the solar neighbourhood sampled by the CORAVEL dwarfs (complete within ~3 x 10^-4 kpc^3), CORAVEL giants (complete within ~5 x 10^-2 kpc^3) and RAVE (5-15% complete within ~8 kpc^3) are devoid of any vertically coherent streams containing hundreds of stars. This is sufficiently sensitive to allow our RAVE sample to rule out the passing of the tidal stream of the disrupting Sagittarius (Sgr) dwarf galaxy through the solar neighbourhood. This agrees with the most recent determination of its orbit and dissociates it from the Helmi et al. halo stream. Our constraints on the absence of the Sgr stream near the Sun could prove a useful tool for discriminating between Galactic potential models. The lack of a net vertical flow through the solar neighbourhood in the CORAVEL giants and RAVE samples argues against the Virgo overdensity crossing the disc near the Sun. There are no vertical streams in the CORAVEL giants and RAVE samples with stellar densities >1.6 x 10^4 and 1.5 x 10^3 stars kpc^-3 respectively and therefore no evidence for locally enhanced dark matter., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 25 pages, 22 figures, 9 tables

We report new constraints on the local escape speed of our Galaxy. Our analysis is based on a sample of high velocity stars from the RAVE survey and two previously published datasets. We use cosmological simulations of disk galaxy formation to motivate our assumptions on the shape of the velocity distribution, allowing for a significantly more precise measurement of the escape velocity compared to previous studies. We find that the escape velocity lies within the range $498\kms < \ve < 608 \kms$ (90 per cent confidence), with a median likelihood of $544\kms$. The fact that $\ve^2$ is significantly greater than $2\vc^2$ (where $\vc=220\kms$ is the local circular velocity) implies that there must be a significant amount of mass exterior to the Solar circle, i.e. this convincingly demonstrates the presence of a dark halo in the Galaxy. For a simple isothermal halo, one can calculate that the minimum radial extent is $\sim58$ kpc. We use our constraints on $\ve$ to determine the mass of the Milky Way halo for three halo profiles. For example, an adiabatically contracted NFW halo model results in a virial mass of $1.42^{+1.14}_{-0.54}\times10^{12}M_\odot$ and virial radius of $305^{+66}_{-45}$ kpc (90 per cent confidence). For this model the circular velocity at the virial radius is $142^{+31}_{-21}\kms$. We present the first data release of the Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE), an ambitious spectroscopic survey to measure radial velocities and stellar atmosphere parameters (temperature, metallicity, surface gravity) of up to one million stars using the 6dF multi-object spectrograph on the 1.2-m UK Schmidt Telescope of the Anglo-Australian Observatory (AAO). The RAVE program started in 2003, obtaining medium resolution spectra (median R=7,500) in the Ca-triplet region ($\lambda\lambda$ 8,410--8,795 \AA) for southern hemisphere stars drawn from the Tycho-2 and SuperCOSMOS catalogs, in the magnitude range 9

We used red clump stars to measure the surface mass density of the Galactic disk in the solar neighbourhood. High resolution spectra of red clump stars towards the NGP have been obtained with the ELODIE spectrograph at OHP for Tycho-2 selected stars, and nearby Hipparcos counterparts were also observed. We determined their distances, velocities, and metallicities to measure the gravitational force law perpendicular to the Galactic plane. As in most previous studies, we applied one-parameter models of the vertical gravitational potential. We obtained a disk surface mass density within 1.1kpc of the Galactic plane, Sigma_{1.1kpc}=64+/-5 Msun_pc^{-2}, with an excellent formal accuracy, however we found that such one-parameter models can underestimate the real uncertainties. Applying two-parameter models, we derived more realistic estimates of the total surface mass density within 800pc from the Galactic plane, Sigma_{0.8kpc}=57-66 Msun pc^{-2}, and within 1.1kpc, Sigma{1.1kpc}=57-79 Msun pc^{-2}. This can be compared to literature estimates of \sim40 Msun pc^{-2} in stars and to 13 Msun pc^{-2} in the less accurately measured ISM contribution. We conclude that there is no evidence of large amounts of dark matter in the disk and, furthermore, that the dark matter halo is round or not vey much flattened. A by-product of this study is the determination of the half period of oscillation by the Sun through the Galactic plane, 42+/-2Myr, which cannot be related to the possible period of large terrestrial impact craters \sim 33-37Myr., Comment: accepted

Low-mass and brown dwarfs have recently been found as wide companions to many nearby stars, formerly believed to be single. Wide binaries are usually found as common proper motion pairs. Sometimes, more than two objects share the same large proper motion, identifying them as nearby systems. We have found a third, low-mass component to a known wide binary at a distance of about 21pc, consisting of a red and a white dwarf (LHS4039 and LHS4040; about 150AU separation). The new companion, APMPMJ2354-3316C separated by about 2200AU, was classified as M8.5 dwarf. In recent spectroscopic observations it shows a very strong $H_{\alpha}$ emission line and blue continuum. Comparing this event to flares in late-type M dwarfs, we find some similarity with LHS2397a, a nearby M8 dwarf which is so far the only known example of a low-mass star with a tight brown dwarf companion (separation of less than 4AU). The level of the activity as measured by $L_{H_{\alpha}}/L_{bol}$ is comparable to that of the M9.5 dwarf 2MASSWJ0149+29 both during the flare and in quiescence., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS, Figures 1 and 2 available as finding_chart.jpg and 2mass_k.jpg

High resolution spectra data of red clump stars towards the NGP have been obtained with the high resolution spectrograph Elodie at OHP for Tycho-2 selected stars. Combined with Hipparcos local analogues, we determine both the gravitational force law perpendicaular to the Galactic plane, and the total surface mass density and thickness of the Galactic disk. The surface mass density of the Galactic disk within 800 pc derived from this analysis is Sigma(|z|<800pc)=76 Msol.pc-2 and, removing the dark halo contribution, the total disk mass density is Sigma0=67 Msol.pc-2 at solar radius. The thickness of the total disk mass distribution is dynamicaly measured for the first time and is found to be 390pc in relative agreement with the old stellar disk scale height. All dynamical evidences concerning the structure of the disk (its local volume density -i.e. the Oort limit-, its surface density and its thickness) are compatible with our knowledge of the corresponding stellar disk properties., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A

Nearly 400 Tycho-2 stars have been observed in a 720 square degree field in the direction of the North Galactic Pole with the high resolution echelle spectrograph ELODIE. Absolute magnitudes, effective temperatures, gravities and metallicities have been estimated, as well as distances and 3D velocities. Most of these stars are clump giants and span typical distances from 200pc to 800pc to the galactic mid-plane. This new sample, free of any kinematical and metallicity bias, is used to investigate the vertical distribution of disk stars. The old thin disk and thick disk populations are deconvolved from the velocity-metallicity distribution of the sample and their parameters are determined. The thick disk is found to have a moderate rotational lag of -51+-5 km/s with respect to the Sun with velocity ellipsoid (sigma_U, sigma_V, sigma_W)=(63+-6, 39+-4, 39+-4) km/s, mean metallicity of [Fe/H]=-0.48+-0.05 and a high local normalization of 15+-7%. Combining this NGP sample with a local sample of giant stars from the Hipparcos catalogue, the orientation of the velocity ellipsoid is investigated as a function of distance to the plane and metallicity. We find no vertex deviation for old stars, consistent with an axisymmetric Galaxy. A photometric and proper motion survey has been obtained in 2 directions at intermediate latitude: ($l=167.5^\circ$, $b=47.4^\circ$; $\alpha_{2000}=9^h41^m26^s$,$\delta_{2000}=+49^\circ53'27''$) and ($l=278^\circ$, $b=47^\circ$; $\alpha_{2000}=11^h42^m56^s$, $\delta_{2000}=-12^\circ31'42''$). The survey covers 7.13 and 20.84 square degrees, respectively. The limiting magnitude is about 18.5 in V for both directions. We have derived the density laws for stars (M$_{V}$ $\ge$ 3.5) as a function of distance from the galactic plane. The density laws for stars follow a sum of two exponentials with scale heights of 240 pc (thin disk) and 790 pc (thick disk), respectively. The local density of thick disk is found to be 6.1$\pm$3 % relative to the thin disk. The kinematical distribution of stars has been probed to distances up to 3.5 kpc above the galactic plane. New estimates of the parameters of velocity ellipsoid have been derived for the thick disk of the Galaxy. The velocity distribution of neighbouring stars is deduced from the Hipparcos proper motions. We have used a classical Schwarzschild decomposition and also developed a dynamical model for quasi-exponential stellar discs. This model is a 3-D derivation of Shu's model in the framework of St\"ackel potentials with three integrals of motion. We determine the solar motion relative to the local standard of rest (LSR), the density and kinematic radial gradients, as well as the local slope of the velocity curve. From the stellar disc dynamical model, we determine explicitly the link between the tangential-vertical velocity (v_\theta, v_z) coupling and the local shape of the potential. Using a restricted sample of 3-D velocity data, we measure $z_o$, the focus of the spheroidal coordinate system defining the best fitted St\"ackel potential. The parameter $z_o$ is related to the tilt of the velocity ellipsoid and more fundamentally to the mass gradient in the galactic disc. This parameter is found to be 5.7\pm1.4 kpc. This implies that the galactic potential is not extremly flat and that the dark matter component is not confined in the galactic plane., Comment: 12 pages, Latex, 8 figures, to be published in A&A Main Journal

This paper presents the detailed results obtained in the search of density- velocity inhomogeneities in a volume limited and absolute magnitude limited sample of A-F type dwarfs within 125 parsecs of the Sun. A 3-D wavelet analysis is used to extract inhomogeneities, both in the density and velocity distributions. Having established a real picture of the phase space without assumption we come back to previously known observational facts regarding clusters and associations, superclusters. In the 3-D position space, well known open clusters (Hyades, Coma Berenices and Ursa Major), associations (parts of the Scorpio-Centaurus association) as well as the Hyades evaporation track are retrieved. Three new probably loose clusters are identified (Bootes, Pegasus 1 and 2). The sample is relatively well mixed in the position space since less than 7 per cent of the stars belong to structures with coherent kinematics, most likely gravitationally bound. In the velocity space, the majority of large scale velocity structures ($\sigma$ ~ 6.3 $km s-1$) are Eggen's superclusters (Pleiades SCl, Hyades SCl and Sirius SCl) with the whole Centaurus association. A new supercluster-like structure is found with a mean velocity between the Sun and Sirius SCl velocities. These structures are all characterized by a large age range which reflects the overall sample age distribution. Moreover, a few old streams of ~ 2 Gyr are also extracted at this scale with high U components. We show that all these large velocity dispersion structures represent 46% of the sample. Smaller scales (\sigma ~ 3.8 and 2.4 $km s-1$) reveal that superclusters are always substructured by 2 or more streams which generally exhibit a coherent age distribution. A volume limited and absolute magnitude limited sample of A-F type dwarfs within 125 parsecs of the Sun is searched for inhomogeneities in the density- velocity space, expecting signatures of the cluster evaporation, phase mixing and possible disc heating mechanisms. A 3-D wavelet analysis is used to extract inhomogeneities, both in the density and velocity distributions. Thus, a real picture of the phase space is produced. Not only are some clusters and streams detected, but the fraction of clumped stars can be measured. By estimating individual stellar ages one can relate the streams and clusters to the state of the interstellar medium at star formation time and provide a quantitative view of cluster evaporation and stream mixing. As a result, we propose a coherent interpretation of superclusters and derive some quantitative evolutionary tracers which we expect to serve in the understanding of the large scale evolution of the galactic disc. The sample is relatively well mixed in the position space since less than 7 per cent of the stars are proper motion confirmed cluster members. We also detect star evaporation out of the Hyades open cluster. In the velocity space, the typical scale of so-called Eggen's superclusters ($\sigma 6.3 km/s$) does not seem to correspond to any physical entity. The picture they form, their frequency and their divisions at smaller scales are well compatible with their creation by chance coincidence of physically homogeneous smaller scale structures ($\sigma 3.8 or 2.4 km/s$). Hipparcos data provide the first, volume limited and absolute magnitude limited homogeneous tracer of stellar density and velocity distributions in the solar neighbourhood. The density of A-type stars more luminous than $M_v=2.5$ can be accurately mapped within a sphere of 125 pc radius, while proper motions in galactic latitude provide the vertical velocity distribution near the galactic plane. The potential well across the galactic plane is traced practically hypothesis-free and model-free. The local dynamical density comes out as $\rho_{0}=0.076 \pm0.015~M_{\sun}~{pc}^{-3}$ a value well below all previous determinations leaving no room for any disk shaped component of dark matter., Comment: 24 pages, 13 figures, latex. In a recent Letter, Cowsik, Ratnam and Bhattacharjee (1996a) have built a dynamically self-consistent spatial distribution of particles of galactic dark matter. They have come up with the rather unorthodox conclusion that the mean velocity dispersion of dark matter particles ``should be $600 kms$ or larger''. Their letter triggered immediate comments (Evans 1996, Gates et al. 1996). Here we find, as did Cowsik et al. (1996a), that models of the dark matter halo can be made consistent with velocity dispersion much larger than that expected from a simple application of the virial theorem in the solar neighbourhood. But in contrast to their conclusions, we show that using their model, we also obtain solutions with smaller velocity dispersion down to $\sim 270 kms$. These more orthodox dispersions arise because of less constraining boundary conditions for the central density but do not rely on indirect or model dependent measurements of the large scale distance behaviour of the rotation curve., Comment: 3 pages, Latex, 1 Figure

Dynamical self-consistent constraints deduced from the Boltzmann equation are necessary to analyse and interpret kinematic data in the Galaxy. It has been shown that the standard epicycle theory approach, a first order theory to estimate galactic characteristics, is subject to systematic errors. In some recent work, distribution function solutions of the Boltzmann equation and/or third moments in Jeans equations have been used to obtain a more consistent description of our Galaxy. In this paper, we give a short review of observational constraints and the different values usualy taken for global parameters describing our Galaxy, namely the slope of the circular velocity curve, the density and kinematic scale lengths. Secondly we build a new model of Shu-type distribution functions where scale lengths and the shape of the velocity curve are free parameters. Thirdly we compare and adjust this model to velocity distributions of stars in the solar neighbourhood taken from the Gliese catalogue and other ones. Implicit constraints are related to the asymmetric drift relation and the Lindblad equation that gives the ratio of radial and tangential velocity dispersions. We conclude that extended Shu distribution functions recover most of the fundamental kinematic properties of the galactic disc. We have been doing a photometric and astrometric sample survey programme on Schmidt plates in a few selected directions in the Galaxy with an aim to study galactic stellar populations. In order to calibrate Schmidt plates photometrically, it is necessary to have a number of photometric standards which cover the entire range of magnitudes to be studied on the plates. As Schmidt plates cover a wide area of the sky, the standards should also be spread over the surface of the plate so as to minimise geometrical effects present on the plate. This paper is first in a series of papers aimed at to provide photometric standards in the selected galactic directions to be studied. In this paper we present photometric magnitudes obtained through CCD observation in the galactic direction (l=170deg, b=45deg) centered at alpha(2000) = 9h 41m 20s and delta(2000) = +49deg 54' 20'' and covering an area of 14 sq degs. B and V magnitudes have been obtained for a total of 214 stars out of which for 73 stars U magnitudes also have been obtained. The magnitude range covered is 11

We have derived a new photographic photometry and proper motions for 20000 stars with completeness to V = 18 in the direction of galactic center at the intermediate latitude (l = 3 deg,b = 47 deg; alpha(1950)=15h 18m, delta(1950) = +02deg 16') for a 15.5 sq deg field. The combination of four glass copies of the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey (i.e. POSS 1402 E&O and POSS 1429 E&O) has been used as a first epoch for proper motion determination. The random error of the proper motions is approximately 0.''3/cen to V=17. The photometric accuracy ranges between 0.07 to 0.10 in the V, B and U bands. We stress the importance of the magnitude and color effects in astrometric surveys of field stars. Using color-magnitude diagrams of a few cluster member stars, a new distance of 6.9+-0.5 kpc is derived for M5 and 20.3+-0.8 kpc for Pal 5 globular clusters. This is in good agreement with other determinations. We have analyzed the components of U+W and V galactic space motions resulting from the accurate proper motions survey. No dependence with z distance is found in the asymmetric drift of the thick disk population.
