We present a numerical framework bringing together a structural and a surface-energy minimization model to compute nano- and microorigami self-folding processes, that are three-dimensional in nature. A liquid drop, initially at rest on the template, triggers the spontaneous folding and deforms dynamically with the template. As application, the self-folding of thin two-dimensional templates into pyramidal microstructures is simulated. Each template is composed of a fixed regular base connected to rigid triangular side panels by two elastic hinges. We presently determine the condition, at which the transition from partial to full drop encapsulation occurs. The present model makes use of phase fields to numerically represent the drop and the template. This allows to: (i) develop an efficient computational method, which incorporates time-derivative terms and (ii) study three-dimensional complex self-folding processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The physics of the moving contact line of an impacting droplet is widely applied in a variety of domains in rapidly advancing healthcare technology and medicine. The behavior of the dynamic contact line after impact of a biologically active droplet on a complex material surface involves complicated solid–liquid and liquid–gas interfacial interactions. Therefore, a deep understanding of such complex droplet contact line dynamics by applying the current physical models and state-of-the-art nanotechnology and artificial neural networks can be one of the ongoing promising interests in the field of interfacial physics. This review provides an overview of several scientific aspects of contact line dynamics of an impacting droplet and its influence on the current developed healthcare technology and medicine. Firstly, the potential applications in modern healthcare and personalized medicine are listed and discussed. Secondly, the theory of the moving contact line and the fundamental physical parameters related to the motion of impacting droplets are introduced. Afterwards, the current physical models of moving contact line dynamics are critically explained by emphasizing their limitations. Finally, current concerns and obstacles are summarized, and future perspectives and research directions are outlined to address poorly understood and conflicting issues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Straight cracks are observed in thin coatings under residual tensile stress, resulting into the classical network pattern observed in china crockery, old paintings, or dry mud. Here, we present a novel fracture mechanism where delamination and propagation occur simultaneously, leading to the spontaneous self-replication of an initial template. Surprisingly, this mechanism is active below the standard critical tensile load for channel cracks and selects a robust interaction length scale on the order of 30 times the film thickness. Depending on triggering mechanisms, crescent alleys, spirals, or long bands are generated over a wide range of experimental parameters. We describe with a simple physical model, the selection of the fracture path and provide a configuration diagram displaying the different failure modes.

We report how cell rheology measurements can be performed by monitoring the deformation of a cell in a microfluidic constriction, provided that friction and fluid leaks effects between the cell and the walls of the microchannels are correctly taken into account. Indeed, the mismatch between the rounded shapes of cells and the angular cross-section of standard microfluidic channels hampers efficient obstruction of the channel by an incoming cell. Moreover, friction forces between a cell and channels walls have never been characterized. Both effects impede a quantitative determination of forces experienced by cells in a constriction. Our study is based on a new microfluidic device composed of two successive constrictions, combined with optical interference microscopy measurements to characterize the contact zone between the cell and the walls of the channel. A cell squeezed in a first constriction obstructs most of the channel cross-section, which strongly limits leaks around cells. The rheological properties of the cell are subsequently probed during its entry in a second narrower constriction. The pressure force is determined from the pressure drop across the device, the cell velocity, and the width of the gutters formed between the cell and the corners of the channel. The additional friction force, which has never been analyzed for moving and constrained cells before, is found to involve both hydrodynamic lubrication and surface forces. This friction results in the existence of a threshold for moving the cells and leads to a non-linear behavior at low velocity. The friction force can nevertheless be assessed in the linear regime. Finally, an apparent viscosity of single cells can be estimated from a numerical prediction of the viscous dissipation induced by a small step in the channel. A preliminary application of our method yields an apparent loss modulus on the order of 100 Pa s for leukocytes THP-1 cells, in agreement with the literature data.

It is often postulated that quasistatic cracks propagate along the direction allowing fracture for the lowest load. Nevertheless, this statement is debated, in particular for anisotropic materials. We performed tearing experiments in anisotropic brittle thin sheets that validate this principle in the case of weak anisotropy. We also predict the existence of forbidden directions and facets in strongly anisotropic materials, through an analogy with the description of equilibrium shapes in crystals. However, we observe cracks that do not necessarily follow the easiest direction but can select a harder direction, which is only locally more advantageous than neighboring paths. These results challenge the traditional description of fracture propagation, and we suggest a modified, less restrictive criterion compatible with our experimental observations.

We show that thin sheets under boundary confinement spontaneously generate a universal self-similar hierarchy of wrinkles. From simple geometry arguments and energy scalings, we develop a formalism based on wrinklons, the localized transition zone in the merging of two wrinkles, as building blocks of the global pattern. Contrary to the case of crumpled paper where elastic energy is focused, this transition is described as smooth in agreement with a recent numerical work [R. D. Schroll, E. Katifori, and B. Davidovitch, Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 074301 (2011)]. This formalism is validated from hundreds of nanometers for graphene sheets to meters for ordinary curtains, which shows the universality of our description. We finally describe the effect of an external tension to the distribution of the wrinkles.

The wrinkling and delamination of stiff thin films adhered to a polymer substrate have important applications in "flexible electronics." The resulting periodic structures, when used for circuitry, have remarkable mechanical properties because stretching or twisting of the substrate is mostly accommodated through bending of the film, which minimizes fatigue or fracture. To date, applications in this context have used substrate patterning to create an anisotropic substrate-film adhesion energy, thereby producing a controlled array of delamination "blisters." However, even in the absence of such patterning, blisters appear spontaneously, with a characteristic size. Here, we perform well-controlled experiments at macroscopic scales to study what sets the dimensions of these blisters in terms of the material properties and explain our results by using a combination of scaling and analytical methods. Besides pointing to a method for determining the interfacial toughness, our analysis suggests a number of design guidelines for the thin films used in flexible electronic applications. Crucially, we show that, to avoid the possibility that delamination may cause fatigue damage, the thin film thickness must be greater than a critical value, which we determine.

Aggregation processes generally lead to broad distributions of sizes involving exponential tails. Here, experiments on the capillary-driven coalescence of regularly spaced flexible structures yields a self-similar distribution of sizes with no tail. At a given step, the physical process imposes a maximal size for the aggregates, which appears as the relevant scale for the distribution. A simple toy model involving the aggregation of nearest neighbors exhibits the same statistics. A mean-field theory accounting for a maximal size is in agreement with both experiments and numerics. This approach is extended to iterative fragmentation processes where the largest object is broken at each step.

The interaction between elasticity and capillarity is used to produce three-dimensional structures through the wrapping of a liquid droplet by a planar sheet. The final encapsulated 3D shape is controlled by tailoring the initial geometry of the flat membrane. Balancing interfacial energy with elastic bending energy provides a critical length scale below which encapsulation cannot occur, which is verified experimentally. This length is found to depend on the thickness as h3/2, a scaling favorable to miniaturization which suggests a new way of mass production of 3D micro- or nanoscale objects.

Inspired by the starfish's unique ability to achieve flexibility and posture-holding with minimal energy expenditure, we present a novel bioinspired morphing structure. Our two-component design, consisting of a thermoplastic mesh and elastomeric jacket, effectively mimics the functions of the starfish's ossicles, mutable collagenous tissues, and derma. This structure exhibits a remarkable combination of self-healing, time-dependent shape memory, and self-posture-holding properties. Systematic variations in mesh geometry demonstrate precise control over structural stiffness and thermal response, enabling customization for specific applications. The structure's scalability and ease of fabrication further enhance its adaptability. We experimentally demonstrate the potential of our biomimetic morphing structure using several prototypes. This work lays the foundation for developing a new type of versatile morphing structures with applications in diverse fields, including robotics, biomedical devices, and adaptive structures. The main aim of the current study is to explore direction-dependent fracture initiation and propagation within an arbitrary anisotropic solid. In particular, the specific objective is to develop an anisotropic cohesive phase-field (PF) fracture model. In this model, weak and strong anisotropy is considered both in the strain energy and fracture energy. This is achieved by considering contributions to strain energy of fiber and matrix as in the case of fiber-reinforced composites (FRC) together with introducing anisotropy in fracture energy through higher-order structural tensors. Motivated from earlier works of Van den Bosch et al. (Eng Fract Mech 73:1220–1234, 2006), the PF fracture model is integrated with a coupled exponential cohesive zone law which considers both normal and tangential components of separation. Such a cohesive PF description has a strong micromechanical basis for fracture, requiring interface fracture toughness and ultimate traction in normal and tangential directions. C 0 and C 1 approximations are used for modeling the weak and strong anisotropy. Several numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the usefulness of the model developed herein. The obtained numerical results are validated with the experimental results from the literature. The anisotropic fracture resulting in either intergranular or transgranular failure of polycrystalline material is analyzed by adopting a coupled anisotropic phase field and cohesive zone approach. The power line insulators are permanently exposed to various environmental pollutants such as dust and fine particles. This may lead to flashovers and therefore widespread power blackouts and heavy economic damage. One way to overcome this problem is to make the insulator surface superhydrophobic. In this research, the superhydrophobic properties of the insulators were improved by applying room-temperature cured composite coatings consisting of epoxy and hydrophobic nano-silica particles. Either octadecyl trichlorosilane (ODTS) or hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) was used to coat the silica nanoparticles and make them hydrophobic. Then, the hydrophobic silica was added to a mixture of epoxy resin and hardener. The suspension was applied on the surfaces of a commercial porcelain insulator and cold-cured at ambient temperature. The coating increased the water contact angle from 50° to 149°. The samples preserved their hydrophobic properties even after 244 h exposure to the UV light. The coating adhesion was rated as 4B according to the ASTM D3359 standard. The coating decreased the leakage current by 40% and increased the breakdown voltage by 86% compared to the uncoated sample, and it showed promise for making power line insulators self-clean. Inspired by the natural shape-morphing abilities of biological organisms, we introduce a strategy for creating energy-efficient dynamic 3D metasurfaces through spatiotemporal jamming of interleaved assemblies. Our approach, diverging from traditional shape-morphing techniques reliant on continuous energy inputs, utilizes strategically jammed, paper-based interleaved assemblies. By rapidly altering their stiffness at various spatial points and temporal phases during the relaxation of the soft substrate through jamming, we enable the formation of refreshable, intricate 3D shapes with a desirable load-bearing capability. This process, which does not require ongoing energy consumption, ensures energy-efficient and lasting shape displays. Our theoretical model, linking buckling deformation to residual pre-strain, underpins the inverse design process for an array of interleaved assemblies, facilitating the creation of diverse 3D configurations. This metasurface holds notable potential for tactile displays, particularly for the visually impaired, heralding possibilities in visual impaired education, haptic feedback, and virtual/augmented reality applications. This paper introduces a load-bearing 3D dynamic metasurface that alters the stiffness of interleaved assemblies at various spatial points and temporal phases through jamming. The bearing capacity - the ability of a surface to support applied loads - is an important parameter for understanding and predicting the response of a surface. Previous work has inferred the bearing capacity and trafficability of specific regions of the Moon using orbital imagery and measurements of the boulder tracks visible on its surface. Here, we estimate the bearing capacity of the surface of an asteroid for the first time using DART/DRACO images of suspected boulder tracks on the surface of asteroid (65803) Didymos. Given the extremely low surface gravity environment, special attention is paid to the underlying assumptions of the geotechnical approach. The detailed analysis of the boulder tracks indicates that the boulders move from high to low gravitational potential, and provides constraints on whether the boulders may have ended their surface motion by entering a ballistic phase. From the 9 tracks identified with sufficient resolution to estimate their dimensions, we find an average boulder track width and length of 8.9 ± 1.5 m and 51.6 ± 13.3 m, respectively. From the track widths, the mean bearing capacity of Didymos is estimated to be 70 N/m2, implying that every 1 m2 of Didymos' surface at the track location can support only ~70 N of force before experiencing general shear failure. This value is at least 3 orders of magnitude less than the bearing capacity of dry sand on Earth, or lunar regolith. Bearing capacity, the ability of a surface to support applied loads, is a critical property in planetary exploration to understand a surface's response to landing or roving. We investigated why wet hair clumps into bundles by dunking a model brush of parallel elastic lamellae into a perfectly wetting liquid. As the brush is withdrawn, pairs of bundles aggregate successively, forming complex hierarchical patterns that depend on a balance between capillary forces and the elasticity of the lamellae. This capillary-driven self-assembly of flexible structures, which occurs in the tarsi of insects and in biomimetic adhesives but which can also damage micro-electromechanical structures or carbon nanotube 'carpets', represents a new type of coalescence process.

When a fiber is brought into contact with a soft etching liquid, a conical tip is generally shaped. We show here that the use of corrosive liquids which release gases during the etching reaction may lead to original self-similar shapes, because of successive pinning and detachment of the meniscus. The conditions for the formation of this shape and its evolution are described. In particular, we stress the effect of convection due to released bubbles.

We discuss the rise of a liquid inside an angular capillary tube. It is shown that for a wetting liquid, the height of the rise is (as usually) inversely proportional to the length which characterizes the confinement. The exact laws deduced from energetic considerations are found to be in excellent agreement with the data. We then show how such tubes can be used to prevent bubbles from being trapped. The rising velocity of a bubble is finally discussed, in the particular case of a square tube.

This study presents an integrated approach combining surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) with a specialized deep learning algorithm, SFNet, to offer a rapid, accurate, and label‐free alternative for COVID‐19 diagnosis and viral load quantification. The SiO2‐coated silver nanorod arrays are employed as the SERS substrates, fabricated using a reliable and effective glancing angle deposition technique. A dataset of 4800 SERS spectra from 120 positive and 120 negative inactivated clinical human nasopharyngeal swabs are collected directly on the SERS substrates without any labels. A SFNet algorithm is tailored to adapt to the unique spectral features inherent to SERS data, achieving a test accuracy of 98.5% and a blind test accuracy of 99.04%. Moreover, an optimized SFNet algorithm unveils the capability of estimating SARS‐CoV‐2 viral loads, accurately predicting the cycle threshold values (Ct values) of the three vital gene fragments with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.627 (1.3 for blind test). The methodology is substantiated using actual clinical specimens and completed in <15 min, thereby strengthening its real‐world point‐of‐care applicability. This rapid and precise yet label‐free modality competes favorably with classical reverse‐transcription real‐time polymerase chain reaction (RT‐PCR) and marks an advancement in SERS‐based sensor algorithms. The impact of extractives on the appearance and wettability changes of wood surface during artificial weathering was discussed from the aspect of chemical and structural changes. Un-extracted (CK) and extracted samples were subjected to UV irradiation or a combination of UV and water. The structural damage inflicted on the extracted sample by the combination of UV and water was more severe compared to the CK sample, corresponding to high roughness and the presence of visible cracks on the irradiated surface of the extracted sample. Analysis of FTIR spectra and overall color change (ΔE*) confirmed that ΔE* values correlated well with lignin decay and the generation of carbonyl groups. Furthermore, the wettability of samples aligned closely with changes in the hydrophilic hydroxyl groups determined by FTIR spectra. The presence of extractives in the CK sample retarded the rate of lignin degradation, and the additional carbonyl groups generated by extractives contributed to color changes. Overall, the extracted samples exhibited more pronounced structural deterioration, color changes, increased wettability, and composition degradation compared to the CK sample, underscoring the photo-stabilizing effect of extractives during UV irradiation. Additionally, the erosion of water exacerbated the degradation of chemical composition and structural deterioration, resulting in significant visible alterations and high wettability. We present a theoretical and computational model for the behavior of a porous solid undergoing two interdependent processes, the finite deformation of a solid and species migration through the solid, which are distinct in bulk and on surface. Nonlinear theories allow us to systematically study porous solids in a wide range of applications, such as drug delivery, biomaterial design, fundamental study of biomechanics and mechanobiology, and the design of sensors and actuators. As we aim to understand the physical phenomena at a smaller length scale, towards comprehending fundamental biological processes and miniaturization of devices, surface effect becomes more pertinent. Although existing methodologies provide the necessary tools to study coupled bulk effects for deformation and diffusion; however, very little is known about fully coupled bulk and surface poroelasticity at finite strain. Here we develop a thermodynamically consistent formulation for surface and bulk poroelasticity, specialized for soft hydrated solids, along with a corresponding finite element implementation that includes a three-field weak form. Our approach captures the interplay between competing multiphysical processes of finite deformation and species diffusion, accounting for surface kinematics and surface transport, and provides invaluable insight when surface effects are important. In insects vulnerable to dehydration, the mechanistic reaction of blood after wounding is rapid. It allows insects to minimize blood loss by sealing the wound and forming primary clots that provide scaffolding for the formation of new tissue. Using nano-rheological magnetic rotational spectroscopy with nickel nanorods and extensional rheology, we studied the properties of blood dripping from the wound of caterpillars of the Carolina sphinx moth (Manduca sexta) with a high concentration of blood cells. We discovered that wound sealing followed a two-step scenario. First, in a few seconds, the Newtonian lowviscosity blood turns into a non-Newtonian viscoelastic fluid that minimizes blood loss by retracting the dripping blood back into the wound. Next, blood cells aggregate, starting from the interfaces and propagating inward. We studied these processes using optical phase-contrast and polarized microscopy, X-ray imaging, and modeling. Comparative analyses of the cell-rich and cell-poor blood of different insects revealed common features of blood behavior. Surfactants are widely used in the fracturing fluid to enhance the imbibition and thus the oil recovery rate. However, current numerical models cannot capture the physics behind capillary imbibition during the wettability alteration by surfactants. Although the interacting capillary bundle (ICB) model shows potential in characterizing imbibition rates in different pores during wettability alteration, the existing ICB models neglect the influence of wettability and viscosity ratio on the imbibition behavior, making it difficult to accurately describe the oilewater imbibition behavior within the porous media. In this work, a new ICB mathematical model is established by introducing pressure balance without assuming the position of the leading front to comprehensively describe the imbibition behavior in a porous medium under different conditions, including gaseliquid spontaneous imbibition and oilewater imbibition. When the pore size distribution of a tight rock is known, this new model can predict the changes of water saturation during the displacement process in the tight rock, and also determine the imbibition rate in pores of different sizes. The water saturation profiles obtained from the new model are validated against the waterflooding simulation results from the CMG, while the imbibition rates calculated by the model are validated against the experimental observations of gaseliquid spontaneous imbibition. The good match above indicates the newly proposed model can show the water saturation profile at a macroscopic scale while capture the underlying physics of the multiphase flow in a porous medium at a microscopic scale. Simulation results obtained from this model indicate that both wettability and viscosity ratio can affect the sequence of fluid imbibition into pores of different sizes during the multiphase flow, where less-viscous wetting fluid is preferentially imbibed into larger pores while more-viscous wetting fluid tends to be imbibed into smaller pores. Furthermore, this model provides an avenue to calculate the imbibition rate in pores of different sizes during wettability alteration and capture the non-Darcy effect in micro- and nano-scale pores. When microdroplets with quasi‐spherical contact angles coalesce together on a low‐adhesion substrate, the capillary‐inertial expansion of the liquid bridge induces a dramatic out‐of‐plane jumping event due to symmetry breaking. From the onset of merging, droplet jumping initiates after a capillary‐inertial time scale of tci∼1–100 ${t}_{\text{ci}}\sim 1\mbox{--}\,100$ μs with characteristic jumping speeds of order vj∼0.1 ${v}_{{\rm{j}}}\sim 0.1$ m/s. This coalescence‐induced jumping‐droplet effect is most commonly observed among a population of growing dew droplets on a superhydrophobic condenser, but can also occur by colliding deposited droplets together or during droplet sliding on fog harvesters. In this review, we cover the historical development of capillary‐inertial jumping droplets, summarize the decade‐long effort to rationalize the ultra‐low energy conversion efficiency and critical droplet size of the phenomenon, and then present 15 variations on a theme of jumping. Capillary‐inertial jumping droplets are not only a visceral illustration of the surprising power of surface tension at the microscale but they also have the potential to enhance phase‐change heat transfer, enable self‐cleaning surfaces, combat frost formation, harvest energy, and govern the rate of disease spread for wheat crops. Natural tissues are composed of diverse cells and extracellular materials whose arrangements across several length scales-from subcellular lengths 1 (micrometre) to the organ scale 2 (centimetre)-regulate biological functions. Tissue-fabrication methods have progressed to large constructs, for example, through stereolithography 3 and nozzle-based bioprinting 4,5 , and subcellular resolution through subtractive photoablation 6-8 . However, additive bioprinting struggles with sub-nozzle/voxel features 9 and photoablation is restricted to small volumes by prohibitive heat generation and time 10 . Building across several length scales with temperature-sensitive, water-based soft biological matter has emerged as a critical challenge, leaving large classes of biological motifs-such as multiscalar vascular trees with varying calibres-inaccessible with present technologies 11,12 . Here we use gallium-based engineered sacrificial capillary pumps for evacuation (ESCAPE) during moulding to generate multiscalar structures in soft natural hydrogels, achieving both cellular-scale (<10 µm) and millimetre-scale features. Decoupling the biomaterial of interest from the process of constructing the geometry allows non-biocompatible tools to create the initial geometry. As an exemplar, we fabricated branched, cell-laden vascular trees in collagen, spanning approximately 300-µm arterioles down to the microvasculature (roughly ten times smaller). The same approach can micropattern the inner surface of vascular walls with topographical cues to orient cells in 3D and engineer fine structures such as vascular malformations. Solid surfaces with improved wettability as well as geometric structures can enhance capture and droplet removal, thereby improving fog harvesting. We fabricated Al wires by combining superhydrophilic (SHL), superhydrophobic (SHB), and oil-infused SHB (SHBO) surfaces into a pattern whose fog-harvesting efficiency could be measured. The SHL-SHBO-SHL pattern showed the highest promise of water droplet capture and mobility on a solid surface with 42% efficiency compared to the 34% efficiency of Bare. In order to identify the optimal efficiency features, two boundary conditions (boundary I: from SHL to SHBO and boundary II: from SHBO to SHL) were introduced, and the impact of the hydrophilic area was examined. Boundary I boosts capture efficiency whereas boundary II increases drain efficiency. Understanding the forces operating at the wettability gradient surface, as well as incorporating the area ratio of SHL and SHBO via wettability combinations, are key to designing effective fog harvesting systems. This review will present the latest research related to the production and application of spider silk and silk-based materials in reconstructive and regenerative medicine and tissue engineering, with a focus on musculoskeletal tissues, and including skin regeneration and tissue repair of bone and cartilage, ligaments, muscle tissue, peripheral nerves, and artificial blood vessels. Natural spider silk synthesis is reviewed, and the further recombinant production of spider silk proteins. Research insights into possible spider silk structures, like fibers (1D), coatings (2D), and 3D constructs, including porous structures, hydrogels, and organ-on-chip designs, have been reviewed considering a design of bioactive materials for smart medical implants and drug delivery systems. Silk is one of the toughest natural materials, with high strain at failure and mechanical strength. Novel biomaterials with silk fibroin can mimic the tissue structure and promote regeneration and new tissue growth. Silk proteins are important in designing tissue-on-chip or organ-on-chip technologies and micro devices for the precise engineering of artificial tissues and organs, disease modeling, and the further selection of adequate medical treatments. Recent research indicates that silk (films, hydrogels, capsules, or liposomes coated with silk proteins) has the potential to provide controlled drug release at the target destination. Biological species can walk, swim, fly, jump, and climb with fast response speeds and motion complexity. These remarkable functions are accomplished by means of soft actuation organisms, which are commonly composed of muscle tissue systems. To achieve the creation of their biomimetic artificial counterparts, various biomimetic stimuli-responsive materials have been synthesized and developed in recent decades. They can respond to various external stimuli in the form of structural or morphological transformations by actively or passively converting input energy into mechanical energy. They are the core element of soft actuators for typical smart devices like soft robots, artificial muscles, intelligent sensors and nanogenerators. Significant progress has been made in the development of bioinspired stimuli-responsive materials. However, these materials have not been comprehensively summarized with specific actuation mechanisms in the literature. In this review, we will discuss recent advances in biomimetic stimuli-responsive materials that are instrumental for soft actuators. Firstly, different stimuli-responsive principles for soft actuators are discussed, including fluidic, electrical, thermal, magnetic, light, and chemical stimuli. We further summarize the state-of-the-art stimuli-responsive materials for soft actuators and explore the advantages and disadvantages of using electroactive polymers, magnetic soft composites, photo-thermal responsive polymers, shape memory alloys and other responsive soft materials. Finally, we provide a critical outlook on the field of stimuli-responsive soft actuators and emphasize the challenges in the process of their implementation to various industries. The injection of a fluid into another fluid causes a spatiotemporal pattern along the injection front. Viscous fingering is a well-known example when the replaced material is a viscous fluid. Notably, most fluids are, in reality, viscoelastic, i.e., they behave as an elastic solid over short timescales. For this reason, it is important to study the situation when the replaced fluid is viscoelastic. In this study, we observed a dynamics of fluids when an incompressible organic liquid was injected into an oleophilic Hele-Shaw cell filled with an aqueous viscoelastic fluid made of a wormlike micellar solution. We found extensive tip splitting of the injection front, which led to thin fingers with a characteristic size comparable to four times the cell thickness. We examined the material properties and suggest that the thin fingering pattern observed in our system is due to the delamination of viscoelastic fluid from the bottom substrate surface. Stretchable electronics that prevalently adopt chemically inert metals as sensing layers and interconnect wires have enabled high-fidelity signal acquisition for on-skin applications. However, the weak interfacial interaction between inert metals and elastomers limit the tolerance of the device to external friction interferences. Here, we report an interfacial diffusion-induced cohesion strategy that utilizes hydrophilic polyurethane to wet gold (Au) grains and render them wrapped by strong hydrogen bonding, resulting in a high interfacial binding strength of 1017.6 N/m. By further constructing a nanoscale rough configuration of the polyurethane (RPU), the binding strength of Au-RPU device increases to 1243.4 N/m, which is 100 and 4 times higher than that of conventional polydimethylsiloxane and styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene-based devices, respectively. The stretchable Au-RPU device can remain good electrical conductivity after 1022 frictions at 130 kPa pressure, and reliably record high-fidelity electrophysiological signals. Furthermore, an anti-friction pressure sensor array is constructed based on Au-RPU interconnect wires, demonstrating a superior mechanical durability for concentrated large pressure acquisition. This chemical modification-free approach of interfacial strengthening for chemically inert metal-based stretchable electronics is promising for three-dimensional integration and on-chip interconnection. Stretchable electronics require high interfacial strength between the inert metal and elastomer components for durable interconnection applications. Liquid spontaneously spreads on rough lyophilic surfaces, and this is driven by capillarity and defined as capillary wicking. Extensive studies on microtextured surfaces have been applied to microfluidics and their corresponding manufacturing. However, the imbibition at mesoscale roughness has seldom been studied due to lacking fabrication techniques. Inspired by the South American pitcher plant Heliamphora minor, which wicks water on its pubescent inside wall for lubrication and drainage, we implemented 3D printing to fabricate a mimetic mesoscopic trichomes array and investigated the high-flux capillary wicking process. Unlike a uniformly thick climbing film on a microtextured surface, the interval filling of millimeter-long and submillimeter-pitched trichomes creates a film of non-uniform thickness. Different from the viscous dissipation that dominated the spreading on microtextured surfaces, we unveiled an inertia-dominated transition regime with mesoscopic wicking dynamics and constructed a scaling law such that the height grows to 2/3 the power of time for various conditions. Finally, we examined the mass transportation inside the non-uniformly thick film, mimicking a plant nutrition supply method, and realized an open system siphon in the film, with the flux saturation condition experimentally determined. Recently, there has been an exponential growth in the number of publications focusing on surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), primarily driven by advancements in nanotechnology and the increasing demand for chemical and biological detection. While many of these publications have focused on the development of new substrates and detection-based applications, there is a noticeable lack of attention given to various practical issues related to SERS measurements and detection. This review aims to fill this gap by utilizing silver nanorod (AgNR) SERS substrates fabricated through the oblique angle deposition method as an illustrative example. The review highlights and addresses a range of practical issues associated with SERS measurements and detection. These include the optimization of SERS substrates in terms of morphology and structural design, considerations for measurement configurations such as polarization and the incident angle of the excitation laser, and exploration of enhancement mechanisms encompassing both intrinsic properties induced by the structure and materials, as well as extrinsic factors arising from wetting/dewetting phenomena and analyte size. The manufacturing and storage aspects of SERS substrates, including scalable fabrication techniques, contamination control, cleaning procedures, and appropriate storage methods, are also discussed. Furthermore, the review delves into device design considerations, such as well arrays, flow cells, and fiber probes, and explores various sample preparation methods such as drop-cast and immersion. Measurement issues, including the effect of excitation laser wavelength and power, as well as the influence of buffer, are thoroughly examined. Additionally, the review discusses spectral analysis techniques, encompassing baseline removal, chemometric analysis, and machine learning approaches. The wide range of AgNR-based applications of SERS, across various fields, is also explored. Throughout the comprehensive review, key lessons learned from collective findings are outlined and analyzed, particularly in the context of detailed SERS measurements and standardization. The review also provides insights into future challenges and perspectives in the field of SERS. It is our hope that this comprehensive review will serve as a valuable reference for researchers seeking to embark on in-depth studies and applications involving their own SERS substrates. The development of artificial spider silk with properties similar to native silk has been a challenging task in materials science. In this study, we use a microfluidic device to create continuous fibers based on recombinant MaSp2 spidroin. The strategy incorporates ion-induced liquid-liquid phase separation, pH-driven fibrillation, and shear-dependent induction of β-sheet formation. We find that a threshold shear stress of approximately 72 Pa is required for fiber formation, and that β-sheet formation is dependent on the presence of polyalanine blocks in the repetitive sequence. The MaSp2 fiber formed has a β-sheet content (29.2%) comparable to that of native dragline with a shear stress requirement of 111 Pa. Interestingly, the polyalanine blocks have limited influence on the occurrence of liquid-liquid phase separation and hierarchical structure. These results offer insights into the shear-induced crystallization and sequence-structure relationship of spider silk and have significant implications for the rational design of artificially spun fibers. Native spider silk has desirable mechanical properties, but these are challenging to replicate in an artificial material. We investigate the dynamics and instabilities of a droplet that floats on a liquid substrate. The substrate is cooled from below. In the framework of the slender droplet approximation and the precursor model, the problem is studied numerically. Oscillatory and stationary regimes of thermocapillary convection have been observed. The influence of a two-dimensional spatial inhomogeneity of temperature on the droplet dynamics is investigated. The two-dimensional spatial temperature inhomogeneity can suppress oscillations, changing the droplet's shape. In a definite region of parameters, the two-dimensional spatial modulation can lead to the excitation of periodic oscillations. Regular surface roughness could be created on the surface of a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) film through Marangoni flow during the drying process. Therefore, tailoring of both surface and bulk characteristics of the PSA and consequently its adhesion strength could be expected by controlling the drying conditions. Herein, surface and bulk properties of a water-based PSA dried at various temperatures and humidities were scrutinized. Increase in the drying temperature improved the adhesion strength of the PSA to poly(ethylene terephthalate) due to enhanced surface nanoroughness of its film. At constant humidity, the higher the Péclet number, the higher the Marangoni number and the rougher the PSA film surface. Drying humidity rise, however, improved the adhesion strength due to more uniform distribution of copolymers constituting the PSA, better interdiffusion of chains through the interface of polymer particles in a prolonged drying process, and increased surface free energy of the film. The adhesion strength of the PSA, similar to the here-defined viscoelastic dissipation ability, demonstrated a power dependence on the film surface nanoroughness. This newly-defined parameter considers taking advantage of the real viscoelastic dissipation of the PSA regarding its potentiality through thorough wetting of the substrate surface with the PSA. Elastomers and composites made thereof have wide applications, e.g., in automobile, aerospace, and civil engineering. Predicting fracture in such materials is crucial for efficient design and optimum utilization. These materials are oftentimes hyperelastic and anisotropic in nature and in general subjected to mixed mode loading rather than merely pure modes. Soft biological tissues can also be considered anisotropic hyperelastic materials. Computational modeling helps in studying the role of different sources influencing mixed-mode fracture. A unifying thermodynamically consistent anisotropic phase field formulation for modeling the mixed-mode fracture of hyperelastic soft materials like elastomers, elastomeric fiber-reinforced composites, and soft biological tissues at finite strains is proposed and formulated. To model the mechanical response of anisotropic hyperelastic materials subjected to mixed-mode loading, a coupled Neo-Hookean model with orthotropic anisotropy is adopted considering volumetric-deviatoric and a tension-compression decomposition. For modeling the complex crack initiation and propagation, a phase field method based on a power law criterion is adopted by considering a single order parameter as the damage variable. This model is suitable for capturing the overall response of soft fiber-reinforced elastomeric composites as well as soft biological tissues. The proposed model is validated by conducting fracture tests on (a) silicone elastomers, (b) unidirectional fiber-reinforced elastomeric composites, (c) natural rubber reinforced with black carbon, and (d) brain tissue reinforced with axons. Interactions between fluid flow and elastic structures are important in many naturally occurring and engineered systems. This review collects and organizes recent theoretical and experimental developments in understanding fluid-structure interactions at low Reynolds numbers. Particular attention is given to the motion of objects moving in close proximity to deformable soft materials and the ensuing interplay between fluid flow and elastic deformation. We discuss how this interplay can be understood in terms of forces and torques, and harnessed in applications such as microrheometry, tribology, and soft robotics. We then discuss the interaction of soft and wet objects close to contact, where intermolecular forces and surface roughness effects become important and are sources of complexity and opportunity. Nowadays, naval propellers are made in Ni-Al or Mn-Al bronzes, which are affected by high cavitation erosion. In this study, the possibility of adopting 6xxx alloy with different superficial treatments obtained through fluidised beds and laser surface texturing was investigated. 6xxx alloy series is known for its versatility due to an excellent mix of mechanical and physical properties, combined with ease of processing, welding, and good chemical resistance; however, its main drawback is low resistance to cavitation erosion. In this study, a total of 4 different surface treatments were produced and characterized such as fluidised bed coatings (Al2O3, S280) and laser textured samples (0–30% overlap). Moreover, the effect of a heat-treatment was evaluated for each kind of specimen analysed. The study was divided into two steps: in the first phase, the samples were morphologically and mechanically characterised through roughness measurements, micro-hardness, scratch, wear, and wettability tests. Successively, a modified ASTM-G32-10 standard was adopted to assess the cavitation erosion resistance; in particular, for each sample, mass and volume loss were analysed and compared to the as-built sample. Results showed a drastic reduction of the wear evaluated through pin-on-disk tests with the application of the high hardness coatings (Al2O3, S280) while a reduction of the cavitation erosion volume of about 20% lower was obtained through the best laser texturing treatment. A novel approach for the fracture characterization of soft adhesive materials using spiral cracking patterns is presented in this study. This research particularly focuses on hydrocarbon polymeric materials, such as asphalt binders. Ten different asphalt materials with distinct fracture characteristics were investigated. An innovative integrated experimental–computational framework coupling acoustic emissions (AE) approach in conjunction with a machine learning-based Digital Image Analysis (DIA) method was employed to precisely determine the crack geometry and characterize the material fracture behavior. Cylindrical-shaped samples (25 mm in diameter and 20 mm in height) bonded to a rigid substrate were employed as the testing specimens. A cooling rate of −1 °C/min was applied to produce the spiral cracks. Various image processing techniques and machine learning algorithms such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and regression were utilized in the DIA to automatically analyze the spiral patterns. A new parameter, "Spiral Cracking Energy (ESpiral)", was introduced to assess the fracture performance of soft adhesives. The compact tension (CT) test was conducted at −20 °C with a loading rate of 0.2 mm/min to determine the material's fracture energy (Gf). The embrittlement temperature (TEMB) of the material was measured by performing an AE test. This study explored the relationship between the spiral tightness parameter ("b"), ESpiral, Gf, and TEMB of the material. The findings of this study showed a strong positive correlation between the ESpiral and fracture energies of the asphalt materials. Furthermore, the results indicated that both the spiral tightness parameter ("b") and the embrittlement temperature (TEMB) were negatively correlated with the ESpiral and Gf parameters. Klebsiella pneumoniae is one of the bacterial species with high antibiotic resistance. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of Ceftriaxon and Gentamicin on the antibiotic pattern of multi-drug resistant K. pneumoniae isolated from urinary tract infections. Sixty K. pneumoniae isolates have been isolated from 300 urine specimens collected from patients with urinary tract infections. Vitek 2 Compact System was used for identification and detection of antibiotic resistance patterns of bacterial isoltes. The highest percentage of antibiotic resistance of bacterial isolates to ampicillin (100%), followed by cefazolin (53.3%), while the lowest percentage of resistance was shown to Imipenem and tigecycline, which were 5% and 3.3%, respectively. The effect of MIC of gentamicin and ceftriaxon toward 10 selected isolates were used to select mutated isolates, then the effect of both antibiotic-on-antibiotic resistance of mutated isolates was detected using Vitek 2 Compact System. The results of the mutation experiment using ceftriaxone gave successful results to 7 isolates while 5 isolates gave positive results to gentamicin. The results of antibiotic resistance pattern of mutated isolates showed that all mutated isolates became resistance to most tested antibiotics in comparison with original isolates. We concluded that indiscriminate and wrong use of antibiotics would lead to emergence of MDR isolates not only for antibiotics belonging to the same class but also to other classes. Localised emission from defect states in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides is of great interest for optoelectronic and quantum device applications. Recent progress towards high temperature localised emission relies on the application of strain to induce highly confined excitonic states. Here we propose an alternative paradigm based on curvature, rather than in-plane stretching, achieved through free-standing wrinkles of monolayer tungsten diselenide (WSe2). We probe these nanostructures using tip-enhanced optical spectroscopy to reveal the spatial localisation of out-of-plane polarised emission from the WSe2 wrinkles. Based on the photoluminescence and Raman scattering signatures resolved with nanoscale spatial resolution, we propose the existence of a manifold of spin-forbidden excitonic states that are activated by the local curvature of the WSe2. We are able to access these dark states through the out-of-plane polarised surface plasmon polariton resulting in enhanced strongly localised emission at room temperature, which is of potential interest for quantum technologies and photonic devices. We investigate localised emission from wrinkled monolayer tungsten diselenide. The results lead us to propose a novel mechanism of curvature-enhanced emission from dark states. The rapid evolution of flexible electronic devices promises to revolutionize numerous fields by expanding the applications of smart devices. Nevertheless, despite this vast potential, the reliability of these innovative devices currently falls short, especially in light of demanding operation environment and the intrinsic challenges associated with their fabrication techniques. The heterogeneity in these processes and environments gives rise to unique failure modes throughout the devices' lifespan. To significantly enhance the reliability of these devices and assure long-term performance, it is paramount to comprehend the underpinning failure mechanisms thoroughly, thereby enabling optimal design solutions. A myriad of investigative efforts have been dedicated to unravel these failure mechanisms, utilizing a spectrum of tools from analytical models, numerical methods, to advanced characterization methods. This review delves into the root causes of device failure, scrutinizing both the fabrication process and the operation environment. Next, We subsequently address the failure mechanisms across four commonly observed modes: strength failure, fatigue failure, interfacial failure, and electrical failure, followed by an overview of targeted characterization methods associated with each mechanism. Concluding with an outlook, we spotlight ongoing challenges and promising directions for future research in our pursuit of highly resilient flexible electronic devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
