Abstract

BACKGROUND: Nowadays, olive oil extraction is basically achieved by means of two-phase decanters, which allow a reduction of water consumption and the leaching of phenolic compounds. Despite this, most of the working settings derive from studies carried out on three-phase decanters. Hence, the aim of the present study was to assess the influence of two-phase decanter feed pipe position (FP) on the extraction efficiency and chemical-sensory characteristics of virgin olive oil. Three different positions were considered: at 825 mm (FP1), 610 mm (FP2) and 520 mm (FP3) from the outlet of the oily phase. RESULTS: Position FP3 allowed the highest oil recovery (up to 10%), the lowest percentage of oil in the olive pomace and, in general, a regular trend in terms of oil extraction efficiency. However, the oily must that came out of the decanter was not completely clean in terms of residual content of solid sediment and water. The feeding position partially affected the profile of antioxidant compounds. CONCLUSION: In two-phase decanters, loading the olive paste close to the outlet of the oily phase is recommended to increase the extraction efficiency without jeopardizing the chemical-sensory characteristics of virgin olive oil. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract

Portal vein thrombosis may occur in cirrhosis; nevertheless, its prevalence, and predictors are still elusive. To investigate this issue, the Italian Society of Internal Medicine undertook the “Portal vein thrombosis Relevance On Liver cirrhosis: Italian Venous thrombotic Events Registry” (PRO-LIVER). This prospective multicenter study includes consecutive cirrhotic patients undergoing Doppler ultrasound examination of the portal area to evaluate the prevalence and incidence of portal vein thrombosis over a 2-year scheduled follow-up. Seven hundred and fifty-three (68 % men; 64 ± 12 years) patients were included in the present analysis. Fifty percent of the cases were cirrhotic outpatients. Viral (44 %) etiology was predominant. Around half of the patients had a mild-severity disease according to the Child–Pugh score; hepatocellular carcinoma was present in 20 %. The prevalence of ultrasound-detected portal vein thrombosis was 17 % (n = 126); it was asymptomatic in 43 % of the cases. Notably, more than half of the portal vein thrombosis patients (n = 81) were not treated with anticoagulant therapy. Logistic step-forward multivariate analysis demonstrated that previous portal vein thrombosis (p < 0.001), Child–Pugh Class B + C (p < 0.001), hepatocellular carcinoma (p = 0.01), previous upper gastrointestinal bleeding (p = 0.030) and older age (p = 0.012) were independently associated with portal vein thrombosis. Portal vein thrombosis is a frequent complication of cirrhosis, particularly in patients with moderate–severe liver failure. The apparent undertreatment of patients with portal vein thrombosis is a matter of concern and debate, which should be addressed by planning interventional trials especially with newer oral anticoagulants. Nessa esteira, a pesquisa em questão objetiva promover o debate em torno de algumas implicações éticas potencializadas nas obras Diário da queda (2011), de Michel Laub, e Liquidação (2003), de Imre Kertész, considerando a articulação que se estabelece em ambas as narrativas entre ficcionalidade, incorporação de elementos autobiográficos e memória do Holocausto. Levando em conta a morte paulatina dos últimos sobreviventes do Holocausto e da constatação do aproveitamento de dados históricos na ficção contemporânea, serão investigadas as maneiras como a escrita de si, longe de relativizar a barbárie em proveito de uma celebração narcísica da figura autoral, pode contribuir com a manutenção da memória das catástrofes, se aliando, simultaneamente, ao gesto de rememoração de eventos traumáticos da história coletiva sob a ótica dos vencidos, preconizado por Walter Benjamin nas teses Sobre o conceito da história (1940), e à tarefa derridiana de repensar a política, considerando a abertura ao inteiramente outro e o imperativo de assumir uma máxima responsabilidade com a sobrevida. Os diálogos serão construídos a partir de subsídios teóricos de alguns pensadores como Giorgio Agamben, Walter Benjamin, Jacques Derrida, Maurice Blanchot, dentre outros.

Abstract

Portal vein thrombosis may occur in cirrhosis; nevertheless, its prevalence, and predictors are still elusive. To investigate this issue, the Italian Society of Internal Medicine undertook the “Portal vein thrombosis Relevance On Liver cirrhosis: Italian Venous thrombotic Events Registry” (PRO-LIVER). This prospective multicenter study includes consecutive cirrhotic patients undergoing Doppler ultrasound examination of the portal area to evaluate the prevalence and incidence of portal vein thrombosis over a 2-year scheduled follow-up. Seven hundred and fifty-three (68% men; 64±12years) patients were included in the present analysis. Fifty percent of the cases were cirrhotic outpatients. Viral (44%) etiology was predominant. Around half of the patients had a mild-severity disease according to the Child–Pugh score; hepatocellular carcinoma was present in 20%. The prevalence of ultrasound-detected portal vein thrombosis was 17% (n=126); it was asymptomatic in 43% of the cases. Notably, more than half of the portal vein thrombosis patients (n=81) were not treated with anticoagulant therapy. Abstract

Greenhouse cultivation is one of the most energy intensive activities in agriculture. This is especially true in cold climate zone. Generally heating systems involves boilers fed with fossil fuels. This means low yields of the heat generator and high pollutant emissions. Moreover, the increase of annual crop yield in greenhouses is possible only through a very close control of the internal conditions. Ventilation systems could allow proper control of temperature, relative humidity and CO2 rate. For this purpose a prototype of a mechanical ventilation unit was installed at service of a mini-tunnel greenhouse. The recovery unit is equipped with a heat pump and is able to increase the thermal energy recovered, by the flow of exhaust air, through a high efficiency heat exchanger. A first study was carried out to evaluate the thermophysical and energy performances of the system during the heating season. The experimental apparatus consists of mechanical ventilation system, a perforated duct for air distribution, a fog system to adjust humidity and a supervision system to acquire the field data. Another dedicated supervision system allows to measure and collect all the parameters of the prototype, such as thermophysical parameter of the air flow, thermophysical parameter of the refrigerant circuit of the heat pump, status and alarms of the unit. To characterize the whole system under investigation the main data measured are temperature, relative humidity and carbon dioxide inside the greenhouse and temperature in all section of the prototype. Other two mini-tunnel greenhouses are monitored as references. One is heated with radiant tubes placed on the bench and humidified with a fog system, the other is completely passively heated (without heating system) and humidified with the same fog system. A First test was performed to evaluate the ability of the system to regulate the indoor temperature of the greenhouse with a set point of 27 °C. By using a temperature probe installed on the return side of the machine, the results shown an appropriate temperature regulation.

Abstract

La investigación acerca del sorgo está creciendo y parece estar conectada (entre otros factores) al gran potencial productivo, lo que está ligado a la variedad y disponibilidad de nutrientes del suelo. Los micronutrientes se consideran de gran importancia en los estudios de fertilidad del suelo para conocer su estado nutricional. En esta investigación se determinó el contenido de Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn en muestras de suelos y tejido vegetal, para evaluar la disponibilidad de éstos elementos en un suelo cultivado con Sorghum spp y la concentración de estos en el tejido vegetal. Los resultados indican que los niveles de Fe > Mn > Zn > Cu en el suelo, siguiendo este mismo patrón de acumulación en la planta. Research on sorghum is growing and seems to be connected (among other factors) to the great productive potential, which is linked to the variety and availability of nutrients from the soil. Micronutrients are considered of great importance in the study of soil fertility for their nutritional status. This research determined the content of Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn in soil and plant tissue samples, to evaluate the availability of these elements in a soil cultivated with Sorghum spp. and the concentration in the plant tissue. 91. Hypoxic events during non-obstetric abdominal surgery in pregnant women.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Every year 0.5-2% of women undergo non-obstetric surgery in pregnancy. Hypoxic events with short-term and longterm consequences are one of the most frequent complications in surgery. There is only limited data available regarding the impact of these events. This review aims to analyze the current literature on hypoxic events occurring in non-obstetric abdominal surgery in pregnant women, focused on maternal and fetal outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a non-systematic review of the literature, through a PubMed search using the key words "hypoxemia", "non-obstetric surgery", "surgical procedures", "pregnancy", "pregnant women" and "outcome". RESULTS: There is little data available regarding maternal and fetal outcomes after hypoxic episodes during non-obstetric surgery in pregnancy. In these cases, conservative intrauterine resuscitation maneuvers or immediate delivery should be taken into account. Perimortem cesarean section can be lifesaving for both mother and fetus when maternal collapse is non responsive to resuscitation procedures. Inaccurate information regarding maternal and fetal outcomes is due to the lack of robust data and the heterogeneity of the causes underlying maternal respiratory complications during surgery. CONCLUSIONS: Non-obstetric surgery during pregnancy must be performed when indicated. An expert multidisciplinary team, composed of obstetricians, surgeons, and anesthesiologists need to be included, giving appropriate attention to the physiological changes of respiratory, cardiovascular, and gastrointestinal system that occur during pregnancy. The shortest operative time and peri-operative assistance should be ensured. Complications, such as hypoxic events in pregnant patients need adequate assistance. Multidisciplinary cooperation, continuous training and simulation for anesthesiology and resuscitative procedures can guarantee this. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Se estudiaron variables bioquímicas en un suelo del municipio Pueblo Llano donde se incorporó gallinaza como enmienda orgánica. Para ello,fueron evaluados parámetros químicos (pH, carbono orgánico total, disponibilidad de Ca, Mg, P y K) y biológicos (respiración microbiana a 20,2 y 16,7 ºC; carbono biomásico) antes y después de la aplicación de la enmienda, lo que evidenció un incremento en la mayoría de las variables determinadas, exceptuando P y K que mostraron variabilidad, pero en general, se corroboróque la gallinaza constituye un factor de cambio en el sistema. La experiencia se llevó a cabo a través de un diseño en bloque aleatorizado. Al estudiar la influencia de la temperatura sobre la respiración microbiana se obtuvieron respuestas diferentes, lo que indica que estas variables no siempre aumentan simultáneamente, lo que sugiere que otros factores están interviniendo sobre la actividad biológica del suelo. Biochemical variables were studied in a soil of Pueblo Llano municipality where manure as organic amendment was incorporated. To do this, were evaluated chemical parameters (pH, total organic carbon, availability of Ca, Mg, P and K) and biological (microbial respiration to 20.2 and 16.7 ºC; carbon biomass) before and after application of the amendment, which showed an increase in most of the identified variables except P and K showed variability, but overall, it was confirmed that the manure is a factor of change in the system. The experiment was carried out through a randomized block design.
