Abstract

Designing adsorption materials with high adsorption capacities and selectivities is highly desirable for precious metal recovery. Desorption performance is also particularly crucial for subsequent precious metal recovery and adsorbent regeneration. Herein, a metal–organic framework (MOF) material (NH2‐UiO‐66) with an asymmetric electronic structure of the central zirconium oxygen cluster has an exceptional gold extraction capacity of 2.04 g g−1 under light irradiation. The selectivity of NH2‐UiO‐66 for gold ions is up to 98.8 % in the presence of interfering ions. Interestingly, the gold ions adsorbed on the surface of NH2‐UiO‐66 spontaneously reduce in situ, undergo nucleation and growth and finally achieve the phase separation of high‐purity gold particles from NH2‐UiO‐66. The desorption and separation efficiency of gold particles from the adsorbent surface reaches 89 %. Theoretical calculations indicate that ‐NH2 functions as a dual donor of electrons and protons, and the asymmetric structure of NH2‐UiO‐66 leads to energetically advantageous multinuclear gold capture and desorption. This adsorption material can greatly facilitate the recovery of gold from wastewater and can easily realize the recycling of the adsorbent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Exploring the pathways for photocatalytic dissolution of precious metals (PMs) is crucial for optimizing recovery. In this work, we systematically investigated the selectivity and solvation effects observed for dissolution by focusing on photocatalysis, precious metals and solvents. By combining transient characterization, reaction kinetics, and density functional theory, we determined that the radicals generated in photocatalysis were the key active species in the entire reaction. The cyano functional group in the solvent was the driving factor for dissolution of gold, and the importance of chlorine radicals for dissolution of platinum group precious metals was further confirmed. In addition, the catalytic properties of different precious metals can promote different transformations of functional groups, leading to selective dissolution. 84. Enhancing the photocatalytic removal of toluene by modified porous TiO2with internal hydrophobic interface

Abstract

The efficiency and stability of photocatalytic oxidation techniques in the treatment of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the air are affected by the adsorption performance at the reaction interface and the photogenerated electron–hole separation efficiency. Carbon-loaded porous TiO2with an internal hydrophobic interface was prepared by finely controlling the calcination time and temperature of a titanium-based metal–organic framework (MIL-125). The carbon load in the porous TiO2presents a gradient from the pore surface to the interior. The formed hydrophobic interface in the channel avoids competitive adsorption between gas-phase toluene and H2O and effectively improves photogenerated electron transfer. Experiments and comprehensive analysis by using techniques such as thermogravimetric analysis, Raman spectroscopy, and ultraviolet diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy clarified the mechanism of gradient carbon formation in the porous TiO2, in which the organic ligands in MIL-125 are carbonized during calcination because of the low oxygen content of the pores. The sample prepared by pyrolyzing MIL-125 at 400 ​°C for 1 ​h showed the best activity in the photocatalytic degradation of toluene; the activity was twice that achieved with the commercial photocatalyst P25. Surface photovoltage spectroscopy and photoelectrochemical measurements proved that the gradient carbon load enhances photogenerated electron transfer in the porous TiO2. In-situdiffuse-reflectance infrared Fourier-transform spectroscopy was used to investigate the processes of photocatalytic degradation of toluene, in which the generation of C–H-containing intermediates is a crucial step. This research provides a novel concept for the future design and modification of photocatalyst structures for the effective photocatalytic degradation of VOCs.

Abstract

The adsorption-enhancing TiO2-SBA-15 photocatalyst has been synthesized by an in situ etching displacement method, which possesses unique regular hexagonal pores and large specific surface area. The as-prepared TiO2-SBA-15 can effectively adsorb and increase the concentration of pollutants in the photocatalyst and collision likelihood with the photogenerated radicals, thus improving the efficiency of photocatalytic organic degradation. The structure and morphology have been characterized by N2 adsorption isotherms, X-ray diffraction (XRD), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). These characterizations confirm that TiF4 alcohol solution prefers to react with the internal surface of SBA-15 because of the Siphon effect. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra demonstrate that a Ti-O-Si bond formed after the reaction of TiF4 with SBA-15, which reveals a wonderful combination of TiO2 and SiO2 even at low temperatures. Through this function, the nanocomposite TiO2-SBA-15 could obviously improve the efficiency of photocatalytical removal of toluene in the gas phase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) represents the most widely used semiconductor photocatalysts. The performances of TiO2 are highly governed by the physical and chemical properties such as specific surface area, particle size, porous structure, exposed crystal plane, surface chemistry, etc. Synthesis technology plays a key role in determining the structural characteristics by controlling the rates of hydrolysis, condensation, and crystallization and crystal growth. Solvothermal alcoholysis has received increasing interest in synthesizing metal oxides owing to the unique ability in controlling particle size, shape, and crystal structure. This chapter aims to summarize the hierarchical TiO2 synthesized by solvothermal alcoholysis and displays their enhanced activities in energy and environmental photocatalysis.

Abstract

Monodisperse TiO2 nanospheres with tunable,uniform structures have been synthesized using tetrabutyl titanate as the precursor via a hydrothermal method at 130 ℃.The diameter of TiO2 microspheres can be precisely controlled from tens to 1000 nm by adjusting the synthetic parameters,such as reaction time and pH value of the reaction solution..The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM),transmission electron microscopy (TEM),and X-ray diffraction (XRD).The results showed that the sample was amorphous structure.The crystallinity of TiO2 could be improved by further hydrothermal crystallization.The monodisperse TiO2 nanospheres are expected to be applied in the photocatalytic reaction,solar cell,photonic crystals and so on.

Abstract

Designing high‐efficiency photocatalysts with high charge separation and rapid charge transfer still a challenge. Herein, highly effective g‐C3N4/NH2–UIO‐66 (CNU) hybrids are developed using an engineered ZrN bond between the two components. The formation of the ZrN bond provides an electron transfer pathway between the conduction band (CB) of g‐C3N4 (CN) and Zr centers, which shortens the carrier migration distance, greatly enhancing the separation efficiency of photogeneration carriers. The as‐prepared CNU shows an outstanding performance for photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) under visible light irradiation due to the rapid charge carrier interfacial transfer. This work provides a promising strategy for the design of efficient photocatalysts and helps to establish an effective and sustainable method for removing Cr(VI) under ambient conditions.
