Abstract

A two-step investigation of polypropylene-controlled degradation was performed. First the controlled degradation of polypropylene was investigated by assessing the effects of using dicumyl peroxide (DCP) and 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(t-butylperoxy) hexane (DHBP) in different suspensions (neat, calcium carbonate, and organically modified montmorillonite). The second part of this research was performed according to a factorial design at two levels (22 experimental design) with center point, in which peroxide concentration and reaction time were studied. Polypropylene degradation was assessed by melt flow rate (MFR) and parallel plate rheometry. Results showed that DCP presented higher molar efficiency in polypropylene degradation reactions in relation to DHBP; likely due to radical recombination reactions. Abstract

The authors list all data reporting the presence and density of Phlebotomus papatasi(Diptera: Psychodidae) in Italy. The general conclusion is that P. papatasiis widespread and at times abundant in urban areas. Exceptional collections were made in Apulia (in old stables) and Latium (in bedrooms). In localities near Rome (Rocca Priora and Collevecchlo Sabino) and in the city of Rome as well, P. papatasimay be a nuisance, with many people suffering severe irritation from multiple bites. Two laboratory colonies of P. papatasihave been established from naturally-engorged females collected in Latium (Rocca Priora and Rome) with the aim of studying the ability of laboratory-bred females to incubate and transmit Leishmaniaand phleboviruses.

Abstract

The article presents a study which examined the grafting of maleic anhydride (MA) onto polypropylene (PP) in the presence of the electron-donating monomer styrene (ST). It determined the amount of reacted MA and the extent of degradation in PP using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and melt flow index (MFI). It concluded that an increase in the initial MA concentration presented distinct behavior that depended on the ST content.

Abstract

. Soil analysis was carried out on samples obtained from a breeding-site of the sandflies Phlebotomus perniciosus Newstead, P. perfiliewi perfiliewi Parrot and Sergentomyia minuta (Rondani) in Sardinia. Soil texture, pH, CaCo3, organic matter and water content showed no correlation with the number of sandflies that emerged from the places where soil samples were taken. It appears that pre-imaginal stages of these phlebotomine sandflies are associated with a relatively stable, cool and humid environment protected from sunshine and rain, rich in clay and in organic nitrogen. Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the clinical, radiographic and patient-related outcomes of a novel technique for digitalisation and customisation of reinforced polytetrafluoroethylene meshes in vertical ridge augmentation surgery. Materials and methods: A total of 10 patients (five men and five women, mean age 54 years) with vertical defects were included in the study. Prior to surgery, digital planning of bone augmentation, manufacturing of 3D printed models and replicas of the meshes and modelling of a customised reinforced polytetrafluoroethylene mesh were carried out. All patients were treated using a 50:50 mixture of xenogeneic and autogenous bone, customised reinforced polytetrafluoroethylene mesh and collagen membrane. After 6 to 9 months, computer-guided surgery was planned, the reinforced polytetrafluoroethylene mesh was removed and implants were placed in augmented sites using a fully guided surgical template. Patient-related outcomes, intraoperative timing, surgical and healing complications, vertical bone gain, bone density, pseudoperiosteum type and number and stability of implants were recorded. Results: All 10 patients were treated without surgical complications. Healing was largely uneventful, with the exception of one case of abscess formation without mesh exposure (exposure rate 0%). The mean duration of digital planning was 17.0 minutes, reinforced polytetrafluoroethylene mesh customisation took 9.0 minutes, and the total intraoperative time was 91.3 minutes. The mean planned bone volume was 1.52 cc, vertical bone defect depth was 6.0 ± 1.7 mm and vertical bone gain was 5.5 ± 1.9 mm; most sites showed medium bone density and a Type 1 pseudoperiosteum. All patient-related outcomes were favourable. Conclusions: The preliminary results of this pilot study demonstrated the feasibility and reliability of a fully digital workflow for the customisation of reinforced polytetrafluoroethylene mesh in vertical ridge augmentation.
