This article examines David Bomberg's teaching practice during his time at the Borough Polytechnic (now London South Bank University) in the 1940s and 50s. Exploring the innovations, tensions, and contradictions in his pedagogical methods, particularly in relation to The Borough Group, it argues that Bomberg should be accorded an important footnote in the history of post-War British art education.

This study tested the feasibility of promoting 1-800-4-CANCER through partnerships with organizations serving African American and Hispanic communities. Small-media and client reminders about human papillomavirus vaccination were made available through local agents to 28 community organizations. Organizations ordered 79 932 resources and distributed them to young women and parents of girls-;African Americans in St Louis, Missouri, and Hispanics in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Pre- to postintervention calls to 1-800-4-CANCER increased 38% in these communities, while declining 15% in comparison communities of Kansas City, Missouri, and El Paso, Texas (F = 8.6, P = .004) and 1.4% in the United States as a whole.

This study evaluated a questionnaire originally developed for use with health professionals to explore and compare patients' and clinicians' perceptions of elective single embryo transfer and twin births.IVF clinicians and patients attending an independent Fertility clinic were surveyed using the Attitudes to a twin birth scale (ATIPS) comprising two subscales: attitudes to twins (A-Twin) and attitudes to elective single embryo transfer (A-SET). After refinement total sample scores showed both subscales were reliable with Cronbach's alpha0.8 and item-total correlations0.35.Questionnaires were completed by 100 female IVF patients and 17 IVF clinicians. A-Twin subscale scores indicated neither the IVF clinicians nor female IVF patients demonstrated very positive attitudes to a twin birth although the IVF female patients were more in favour (t = 5.29, n = 117, p =0.001). Responses suggest both groups would benefit from increased information about the risks of a twin birth for the baby. First cycle IVF female patients were significantly more positive about eSET (z = 3.94, n = 100, p = 0.001). Clinicians perceive both their colleagues' and female patients' negativity towards eSET; suggesting a role for education.This study found the ATIPS to be a reliable measure which could be useful in evaluating interventions to promote single embryo transfer.

Displays are getting larger, thinner, and are consuming less power. The logical conclusion of this trend is a future in which wall-size displays are common in homes, a concept we have described as "smart wallpaper" for the purposes of evaluating its HCI implications. What new kinds of experience could smart wallpaper provide? This paper describes a case study on one potential smart wallpaper experience: an interactive children's game. Our results suggest that children and their families see substantial value in both the game and the concept of smart wallpaper. They valued the immersion, the physical activity and the shared nature of the experience. On the basis of this study, we conclude that there is substantial potential for wall-size displays to enable valuable experiences for children and their families, and that smartphones can be used as an intuitive means of interacting with them.

When using a mobile device as a navigation aid, we are used to receiving computer-generated routes and directions. Remote guidance, however, remains an underexplored design space in mobile interaction design. In this paper, we introduce Director, a novel, remote guidance mechanism for the positioning of people in outdoor spaces using mobile devices. We conducted a study to test our novel positioning technique, testing its guiding accuracy and effect on Preferred Walking Speed (PWS). Our results suggest that Director offers users a fun and playful experience, and that our novel guidance technique is a very accurate remote mechanism.

This paper discusses the extant empirical literature concerning training and supervision in career counseling and proposes viewing the professional development of students as career counselors via a comprehensive model of clinical supervision, the Integrated Developmental Model (IDM; Stoltenberg & Delworth, 1987; Stoltenberg, McNeill, & Del-worth, 1998). A vignette illustrating the extrapolation of the IDM to the supervision of career counseling is presented and directions for future research in this area are discussed.

The purpose of this study was twofold. First, the study asked if women were significantly more likely to underestimate rather than overestimate their abilities. Second, the study asked if the accuracy of self-estimated abilities was related to the realism of the women's current occupation. The participants included 198 adult, working women. Results suggested women were significantly more likely to underestimate their abilities (based on the General Aptitude Test Battery) on general learning ability, verbal ability, spatial ability, form perception, clerical perception, and motor coordination. Furthermore, results suggested the tendency to underestimate abilities was related to the realism of women's occupational choice; underestimated abilities were underutilized in the occupation.

This article reviews the literature on vocational interests. Ten themes about vocational interests are discussed: development, correlates, measurement, homogeneity and differentiation, career choice, sex differences, stability, structure, career counseling, and cultural influences. These 10 themes are similar to major issues discussed by Strong (1943) in his landmark book on interests Vocational Interests of Men and Women. Directions for future research are presented.

This study explored two aspects of the construct of serendipity. First, it explored the incidence of serendipitous events influencing career development as perceived by a sample of older adults. Second, it developed categories to describe the events that people reported as significant. The sample was comprised of 237 older adults. Participants responded to a brief questionnaire that asked if their careers were influenced by serendipitous events. Those participants who responded yes were asked to describe the serendipitous events. The results indicated that 63% of the men and 57% of the women felt that their careers were influenced by serendipitous events. Eleven serendipity categories were identified, based on the participants' descriptions of these events.

The present investigation was a step toward a more thorough explication of the amount of genetic and environmental variance in vocational interests than has been found in past research. A comprehensive behavioral genetics research design was employed, using previously collected data from twins reared together, twins reared apart, adoptive families, and biological families. The data consisted of item responses from the Strong Vocational Interest Blank/Strong Interest Inventory (SVIB/SII). All of the data were scored using the Hanson Combined Form Scales for the SVIB/SII (Hanson, 1982). Correlations were computed, and model fitting analyses were run to estimate additive genetic, nonadditive genetic, shared environmental, and nonshared environmental effects. The results suggested that, on average, the variance in a wide range of vocational interests can be attributed to 12% additive genetic and 24% nonadditive genetic effects and to 9% shared environmental and 55% nonshared environmental effects and measurement error.
